Criterium Day, Saturday, May 26, begins with
delicious food at the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast at the Port. The Criterium races begin at 8:30 am downtown,
with the final Category 1/2/Pro race at 4 pm. Hundreds of athletes from around the country will be competing
for thousands of dollars in prizes. The popular kids’ races and the Cobble Climb take place at noon. Spend
your day cheering on the racers as they make their way up the grueling 12.5 percent grade of Snake Alley,
with spectators literally in the middle of the action. The Des Moines County Heritage Center at Fourth and
Columbia will have a special exhibit commemorating the Criterium. Be sure to visit our downtown shops and
restaurants and check out the food vendors, too.
The 2012 event is again part of the Nature Valley Pro Ride series. The Snake Alley Criterium is called “one of the
most physically challenging races in the Midwest” by the Iowa Bicycle Racing Association. Don’t miss out on
the excitement!

Honoring Small Businesses - May 18
The Small Business Appreciation Breakfast will be held at Comfort Suites Hotel and Conference Center on
Friday, May 18 from 7:30 - 9 am. Small businesses from the Greater Burlington area are invited and will receive
up to four complimentary tickets. Additional tickets may be purchased for $15.
Mike Wagner, CEO of White Rabbit Group, will present a road map for building and growing a market-leading
brand. Wagner’s unique approach to branding starts with the performance of organizations, not logos and
taglines. Mike states, “Branding is not something that can be outsourced to marketers. It starts with everyone
taking ownership of their brand and involving every employee to deliver a remarkable brand experience.”
The breakfast agenda will also include Small Business Survey Report, Recycling Awards, Small Business Awards
and Small Business of the Year and presentation of the Des Moines County Business Plan Competition winner.
We encourage you to take time and join us to honor our area small businesses. Last year we saw a record
number of attendees. Let’s show our support once again.
RSVP by May 14, by contacting Belinda Colwell, Administrative Assistant, at [email protected]
or 319-208-0042. No cancellations or refunds after May 14.

Economic Development Marketing in Full Swing
Spring is typically a busy time for the Economic Development
marketing department, and this year is no exception. During the
months of April, May, and June Partnership staff will participate
in five outbound marketing missions. Most of those will be in
partnership with the Iowa Economic Development Authority
(IEDA).
The schedule includes the following:
• International Plastics Showcase
• Jason Hutcheson, Director of Economic Development
• World Congress on Biotechnology
• Dennis Hinkle, President & CEO
• RECon – The Global Retail Real Estate Convention
• Jason Hutcheson, Director of Economic Development
• Windpower 2012
• Dennis Hinkle, President & CEO
• Institute of Food Technology Food Expo
• Jason Hutcheson, Director of Economic Development
If the IEDA is leading the marketing effort, community
representatives from several Iowa communities are usually paired
in teams to call on a targeted list of companies. The goal is to make
contact with those companies that might consider an expansion
to the Midwest at some point in the future. Typically, a short
presentation on Iowa is given, and a conversation about the future
needs of the company takes place.
An advantage in partnering with the state is that department
personnel usually schedule appointments for the teams and invest
significant resources in pre-show marketing. A disadvantage is that
all leads generated from the trade shows are shared by each of the
communities attending. Overall, however, it is a partnership worthy
of investment.
If your company is attending one of the trade shows listed, please
call 319-752-6365 to connect with the staff member assigned to
the show.

DOT Commission Impressed with Southeast Iowa
Members of the business community were urged to show support for
the expansion of Highway 61 at the Department of Transportation
(DOT) Commission meeting held in Burlington. Southeast Iowa
delivered!
On the morning of April 10, commission members held a public
input session. Although there is typically not much dialogue during
this session, it is an opportunity for communities, organizations,
and individuals to express their concerns and thoughts regarding
transportation improvements.
Jason Hutcheson, Director of Economic Development, delivered
a formal presentation representing the Highway 61 Coalition. The
presentation focused on three items: safety, economic development
and the importance of completing the 61 corridor. Video clips from
Siemens, Winegard Company, Big River Resources, the Des Moines
County Sherriff’s Office and the Southeast Iowa Regional Planning
Commission further enhanced those points.
After several formal presentations, the commission scheduled time
for informal remarks from anyone wishing to speak. More than 15
individuals from businesses and organizations in Southeast Iowa spoke
of the importance of a four-lane expansion. It is one of the largest
contingencies that some DOT staff can remember having.
Attendees from Southeast Iowa stand to show support of the four lane project.

The DOT Commission, as opposed to the legislature, is responsible
for prioritizing transportation projects and authorizing the funding
for those projects as dollars become available. The commission was
impressed with the strong showing of support from Southeast Iowa.
Connecting With Interns
The Greater Burlington Partnership is reaching out to welcome
summer interns into our community. We want their stay in our
area to be a positive and a welcoming experience. One that will
encourage them to return to the area to start their career , as
well as share with their classmates what a great place Greater
Burlington is.
Our Summer Interns Hospitality Program provides the
opportunity for interns to learn about our community and
meet and interact with other interns working in the area. The
program consists of a monthly Lunch & Learn for June, July
and August as well as free summer membership to the Greater
Burlington Partnership YP events.
The program is free to Chamber of Commerce members and
their interns. The cost for non-Chamber members is $150
for each intern. We encourage all employers to sign up their
interns. Sign up at www.greaterburlington.com by clicking on
the Hospitality button and filling out the form.

Greater Burlington to Welcome 2014 Iowa State Bowling Tournament
The Iowa State Bowling Association Annual State Bowling Tournament
will be hosted in Burlington and Mount Pleasant in 2014.
The Burlington Bowling Association, Greater Burlington Convention
& Visitors Bureau, Mount Pleasant Bowling Association, and Mount
Pleasant Chamber Alliance recently bid to host the 2014 Iowa State
Bowling Association Annual State Bowling Tournament. A team went
to Cedar Rapids on Saturday, March 31 and presented to the delegates,
that voted on awarding the tournament. It was a success when we were
awarded the tournament in 2014.
The tournament will take place over 16 weekends from February
through April in 2014. There will be an estimated 250 to 300 bowlers
in the community each weekend. The bowlers will each bowl one
game on Saturday and a second game on Sunday. “This will be an
outstanding event for the community, as it will fill our hotel rooms
during a typically slower time of year,” said Beth Nickel, Executive
Director, Greater Burlington Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We
are always looking to attract events that will bring visitor traffic to
the community during the non-peak season, and the State Bowling
Tournament will fulfill this mission.”
The last time Burlington and Mount Pleasant hosted the tournament
was in 2007 through a non-competitive bid process. Currently, the
Iowa State Bowling Association awards the tournament through a
competitive bid process rather than a rotation basis.
“Golden Ticket To Your Backyard Adventure”

Local residents will be sent out to explore the community armed with their “Golden Ticket” to visit local

downtown tours on Thursday, May 24 from 5 – 8 pm in conjunction with the Downtown Riverfront Farmers Market.
This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the history of downtown Burlington.
“Golden Tickets” are free and can be picked up at any of the partnering
attractions or downloaded from www.greaterburlington.com.
If a participant visits six of the nine attractions during the eleven-day promotion, they are invited to

Advanced Manufacturing Career Exploration Day
On Thursday, April 19, 60 juniors and seniors from Des Moines
County High Schools had the opportunity to explore careers in
Advanced Manufacturing at three manufacturing facilities in Greater
Burlington.
The three hour sessions gave students an overview of the facility and
increased awareness of jobs available in the area as well as the skillsets
and education needed to obtain those jobs.
Participating manufacturers for this Advanced Manufacturing Career
Exploration Day were American Ordnance, CNH and Dresser-Rand.
They offered students a close-up look at 18 careers to explore right
here in our own backyard.
Students had many positive things to say about their experience:
• It gave me insight to many different jobs and career fields.
• I liked finding out the new job careers that are available in our
community and how the factory works.
• I hope to work here one day, it is a cool place.
• Thank you for a chance to see what (hopefully) my future career
will be like.
• I truly enjoyed the visit. It pus Mechanical Engineering into more
perspective as my career choice.
• The employers were really easy to talk to and very fully answered
any questions.
Gloria Warner and Shain Smith from Dresser-Rand talk to students about
career options in Advanced Manufacturing.
