InsouthernFlorida,thelocalshaveaquipforthosetimeswhena25-knotnortherstacksthewavesintheGulfStream
so that the horizon appears like a long stretch of undulating hills: "The elephants are walking." On those days, it's
usuallybesttostayinshoretoavoidbeingtrampled.ButtheMoody64,apowerfulBillDixon-designedcutter,doesn't
shy away from bleak forecasts, as I learned last February. The elephants were walking, but with 66,000 pounds of
displacementtocushiontheride,afewsoggypachydermsweren'tgoingtospoilourday.
The Moody 64 is what Dixon calls "a crossover boat," one that, through the efficient use of power-furling gear and
winches,isdesignedtobemanagedbytwoverycapablesailorsbutisbigenoughtoattractthosewhoexpecttohave
family, friends, or crew aboard for more than just a few days. With a high-aspect masthead cutter rig, a fine bow,
minimalwettedsurface,and22,000poundsofballastconcentratedinabulbatthebottomofitsstandard8-foot-6inchfinkeel,theMoody64doesn'tconcealheraspirationsforfastpassages.Inthe2002AtlanticRallyforCruisers
(ARC),hullnumberonesmokedafleetfulloflong-leggedOystersandSwanstowinClassAandtakefourthoverall.
Shecoveredthe2,680-miletransatlanticcoursefromGranCanariatoSt.Luciainjustunder131/2days--that's200
milesperday.
While the 88-foot mast and deep draft limit your options on, say, the Intracoastal Waterway, the Moody's best
attributeswouldbewastedonTheDitchanyway.Onadaythatcalledfor12-footseasintheGulfStream,westeamed
outMiami'sGovernmentCutatacomfortable8.6knotswiththe230-horsepowerturbochargedYanmarrunningat
2,000rpm,justoverhalfthrottle,whichisprobablyallshe'lleverneed.Below,thewell-insulatedwalk-inengineroom
reducedtherumbletoalowhum.
The Moody's hull is hand-laid fiberglass cored with inch-thick end-grain balsa bedded in a polyester bonding paste.
Solidlaminateisusedwherevertherearethrough-hullpenetrationsandalsoatthestem,keel,andskeg.Acomplex
mix of glassed-in floors and stringers in the keel and main bilge area and in structural bulkheads and chainplate
supports help stiffen the hull. Bonded-in tray moldings also provide support in the forward and after sections. The
deckisbothbondedandmechanicallyfastenedtoaninward-turningflangeonthehull.Monelrivetsdriventhrough
analuminumbackingplateintheflangeserveasthemechanicalfasteners.Thedeck-edgebulwarkisthenfittedwith
alaminatedteakcaprail.Afull-lengthrubrailprotectsthehull,whichcomesinthreegelcoatcolors:blue,white,and
burgundy.Meticulouscomputer-assisteddesign(CAD)engineeringandalongbackgroundinstreamlinedproduction
givethebuilder,PrincessYachts,theabilitytoproduceeightto10oftheseboatseachyear.

UnderWay
TheMoodyhasapartiallyexposedskeg-hungrudderandapropelleroffsetslightlytostarboard(sotheshaftwillclear
the skeg when it's removed for service or inspection). It maneuvers quite handily in tight quarters thanks to the
standard 15-horsepower Sleipner bow thruster. The Whitlock steering system, with a 1/2-horsepower Whitlock
Mambaautopilotdrive,usesrobustdirectrodlinkagestotransfertorquetotheruddershaftandprovidesmoothand
positivecontrolfromthehelm.
Onceweclearedtheseabuoy,webegantackingnorth,carryingwhatwouldbeanexcellentheavy-weathersailplan:
fullstaysailandmainreefedtothesecondspreader.Thewindwasgustingabove25knots,andthoughwecould
clearly carry more canvas, we footed to windward at a dry, relaxing, and extremely comfortable 6.5 knots. Waves
insidethedrop-offwererunningabout5feet,andtheperiodswereshort,buttheMoody'sfinebowslicedthrough
the slop without laboring. Below, in the cavernous main saloon, the motion was slow and easy, although the area
aroundthemastexhibitedafewsqueaksofprotest.
Whenweraisedthemainsailtojustunderthetopspreaderandunrolledtheyankee,theMoodysprangtolife.Ona
beamreach,withthewindgustingover20knots,wesurgedaheadatjustunder10knots,andwecouldhaveheld
thatspeedallday.Hardonthewind,theboatwasverywellbehaved,andwewereabletobringtheapparentwindto
lessthan35degreestruebeforefeelingpinched.
DeckDetails
TheMoodycarriesmostofits17-footbeamfromthemidshipstationallthewaytotheaftsections.Thebeamallows
plentyofroomfortwin42-inchwheels,eachhelmwithitsownbenchseatandpaddedhiprest.Thearrangementnot
onlygivesyouyourpickofleewardorwindwardsteeringbutalsoopensaclearpassagetothebathingplatformaft.
Workingtheautopilotcontrolsandinstrumentsonthebinnaclerequiresreachingthroughthewheelspokes,which
couldbeaproblemshouldyouurgentlyneedtodisengagetheautopilot.
Thecockpitisdividedbyasmallstepbetweenthehighersteeringstationsaftandthelower,ample,main-cockpitarea
that'stuckedbehindafixedwindscreen.Theforwardareaseatssixcomfortablyaroundapermanentdrop-leaftable
that has well-placed stainless-steel grabrails. Though this spot offers better protection from the wind and sea, the
uppersteeringstationprovidesabetterviewaheadandeasieraccesstothemaindeck.Fromeitherperch,youhave
sufficientcommandofthesails.
The rig geometry uses triple aft-swept spreaders with cap shrouds, upper and lower intermediates, and aft lower
shrouds.Thecapandlowersleadtoasingledeckfittinginboardneartheraisedcabintop,allowingeasyfore-and-aft
passageoneitherside.Theloadistransmittedfromthisfittingtoarugged,encapsulatedplywoodweb;theweb,in
turn,istiedtothegridlikefloorstructureandmainbulkheads.
Theforedeckisclearanduncluttered.Stainless-steellineguardsprotectallcowls,providingconvenienthandholdsas
youworkyourwayforward.Ahuge,36-inch-diagonalhatchjustaftoftheinnerforestayleadsdowntotheskipper's
cabinandallowsforquicklaunchingandstowingofspinnakersorstormsails.TheLewmar3000verticalanchorwinch
serves twin stainless-steel rollers and feeds into a large, self-draining, divided chain locker. Additional storage lies
behindthecockpitinawideanddeeplazarettethat'sessentiallyaseagoinggarage.Alsoaftisadedicatedlockerfor
aneight-mancanisterliferaft.Stainless-steeldinghydavitsarestandard.

Belowdecks
Down below, interior designer Roel De Groot uses a combination of chrome, polished stainless steel, curved wood
panels,andfabricstoprojecteleganceaswellasmeetthefundamentalrequirementsofanoceangoingboat.Though
you can't alter the standard layout at the factory, personalization comes through the selection of upholstery and
curtainfabricsandthechoiceofsatin-finishedteakorcherryveneerforfurnishings.Thecabinsoleissimulatedteakand-hollyveneer.Althoughstairsatfivedifferentlocationsdisruptanotherwiseflowingfloorplan,theyfallatnatural
transitionpointsbetweencabinsorstationsandhaveLEDcourtesylighting.Afterawhile,theseupsanddownswill
becomesecondnaturetothosewhospendtimeontheboat.
AbigC-shapeddinettetoportisthecenterpieceofthesaloon,withasmallsofaopposite.Hatches,openingports,
andlargesaloonwindowsprovideplentyofnaturallight.Althoughagrabrailnearthecompanionwayishandyforthe
transition between above decks and below, there's a gap at mid saloon where you wish you had a couple of more
handholds.
IwasmostimpressedbythelargeU-shapedgalleythat'sonestepdownfromthesaloon.Notonlydoesitfeaturethe
idealergonomictriangularlayoutofthestove,sink,andfridge;italsohasthecounterspacemanyhomeslack.The
fore-and-aftUshapeallowshands-freesupportwhileunderway,andthestepdownkeepsthecookateyelevelwith
thoseseatedinthesaloon.Myonlycomplaintwiththegalleywasthatthepush-buttondrawerandcabinetcatches
usedhereandthroughouttheboatwillopenwhenyoubumpagainstthem,spillingthelockercontents--typicallyata
timewhenyouhavemoreimportantthingstoworryabout.
Theforward-facingnavstationisanamplenookwithplentyofstorage.Thepassageafttotheowner'scabinfollows
behindthenavstation.TheMoody'sgenerousbeampaysoffhere,allowingthepassagetodoubleasastudy,withits
owndeskandchair.Oppositethestudy,anengine-roomdoorgivesaccesstomostoftheship'ssystems.
Stretchingthefullwidthoftheboataft,theowner'scabinfeaturesaqueen-sizecenterlineberthflankedbysettees.A
secondary benefit of the twin-wheel arrangement is the high headroom it allows on either side of the berth and
above.
ThecreaturecomfortsontheboatIsailedincludedair-conditioning,acompactwasheranddryer,twobig-screenflatpaneltelevisions,anicemaker,awinelocker,andakillercustomsoundsystem.Fromabuyer'sperspective,oneofthe
mostattractivefeaturesoftheMoody64isthelonglistofstandardequipment.ThisincludesaRaymarineinstrument
package, a Lewmar power windlass with remote control from the helm, and Furuno radar and chart plotters at the
helmandnavstation.
BillDixonandthefolksatMoodyhavecomeupwithagreatcombinationofperformanceandcomfortthat'ssureto
pleaseanyonewhoappreciatesasmoothturnofspeedtogowiththatchilledCaliforniachardonnay.Andshouldfoul
weatherfinallycatchyou,shesurecantamethoseelephants.
