One of my favorite trapping and hunting areas was
in the marsh and swamp areas where Foxwood Manor
Apartments were built. Until recently, they always had
mold issues because you don't just throw dirt over a
swamp and expect it to go away. I always reveled in
hearing of their issues, but a well-devised drainage pit
recently built has finally remedied that problem.

I was born while Levittown was in development so the
early parts of my life were in conflict with the loss of
farmlands and hunting areas where my family trapped,
hunted and generally explored. I was constantly being
chased by local police (I still think they knew it was me
but somehow shared my frustrations).

his amazement he saw a man sleeping on our couch.
My brother shut the door and came home. He told my
dad that he was just at the fort and there was some dude
sleeping on the couch. My dad didn't know what to say.
Later that morning we went back. When we opened the
door there was a note saying, “thank you for letting me
stay, I am just passing through and I will be gone in a
few days.” We never did see him again and not too long
after the fort was torn down. We never knew who did it,
but we always assumed it was the township.
When I was about 14 years old, my brothers and I with
the help of our friends built the best fort ever. We had
just finished helping our dad build a shed in our back
yard in Thornridge. There were a lot of materials left
over, so we figured we'd build a fort in the woods behind Manor Elementary School. The fort was 16ft x 8ft.
It had two windows, an old front door and a shingled
roof. The inside was half carpet and the other half had
wood chips (these were courtesy of the playground.)
We even went trash picking and happened to find a
couch. I'll never forget putting the couch on four skateboards and pushing it down Tanglewood Lane. One of
our friends even brought down one of those batteryoperated black and white TVs. We had everything you
could ever need! All in all, it was the ultimate fort. We had all seen
the movie Goonies, so we thought it was a great idea to
set up booby traps around the fort. I remember digging
a few one foot deep holes and at the bottom we had
boards with nails sticking up through it. We covered the
holes with sticks and leaves. Thinking back on it now,
that would have been devastating if someone would
have walked around our fort. I hunted rabbits behind where the McDonald's on
Route 413 is currently located and, in rebellion as a
child, I'd often get chased out of there because I was
of the opinion that I was here first, so you go away. I
would sneak in and shoot a rabbit once in awhile (I did
always manage to claim my dinner before they chased
me).
As Levittown developed, I learned to accept the
fact that times were changing and I'd need to find new
places to hunt. I was born in Newportville, a little town
next door that to this very day boasts a population of
only about 200 —unchanged in all those years.

I own a Persian cat and she always stays on the tile
floor of the bathroom during hot summer days. I always
thought this was because her thick coat made her more
sensitive to the heat. I did not realize that animals with
flat faces get overheated more easily, since they can’t

SAVE A BUCK: REPLACE YOUR AIR FILTERS
Over time, the best ways to save a few bucks on your monthly bills is to make
your home more energy efficient.
Air Filter Replacement: Heating & cooling systems are the biggest user of
energy in our home. Pay attention to the air filter in the vents. Dirty filters restrict
air flow making your system work harder, thus costing you more. Look at your
existing filter to get info about the size then drop by your local home center and
pick up another filter. That’s all there is to it. You might also consider writing the
date that you replaced the filter on the edge of the filter so there’s no mistaking
when it needs replacing again. Changing the filter regularly will ensure the
system is operating as resourcefully and inexpensively as possible.

Put one tablespoon in each muffin cup.
Top with 1/4 cup of any filling you want (Cheeseburger, pizza, BLT,
chicken and veggies, etc.) You can mix it up in the pan. Be sure that all
meat is cooked.Top off with another tablespoon of Bisquick mixture and
bake at 375 degrees for 20-25 minutes– you can also freeze them and pop
them in microwave to heat them up. Great for a quick meal on the go!

ustin Marion of Levittown took 7th place at
the All-American Soap Box Derby race in
Akron, Ohio on July 27. Dustin was among 440
racers from the United States and other countries
competing for a share of $30,000 in scholarships
at the annual event, which is held at the 954 foot
long downhill track at Derby Downs (shown above,
behind Dustin with car and trophy). Racers earn the
right to go to Derby Downs by winning their local
Derby competitions.
Racers compete in three divisions, based on age,
height and experience. Dustin competed against
108 other drivers in the Super Stock division, for
boys and girls 10-17 years old weighing up to 150
lbs. “I was proud to be able to represent Bucks
County and Team Toyota in the 76th All American
Soap Box Derby World Championship. I got to
meet kids from all over the world and I had a lot of
fun!” ■

past ten years, and also served as CEO of United Way of Bucks County from
Snipes Farm & Education Center was established as a 501(c)3 non-profit
organization in 2007 to turn historic Snipes Farm into a true community asset
by making all natural produce and other food products available to the public
(including those that cannot afford to purchase organic foods), while providing
cutting edge educational programs to area children and families. Partnerships
currently exist with several local school districts and other non-profits to bring
children and families onto the campus to learn about sustainable farming,

Local Boy Scouts Trek to National Jamboree
A delegation of 110 Boy Scouts from Bucks County Troops journeyed to
West Virginia in July to take part in the 18th National Scout Jamboree. The
event took place from July 15-24 and attracted over 30,000 Boy Scouts, volunteers and staff from across the United States.
Jamboree has been described as “one big celebration of scouting.” Held
once every four years, it offers Boy Scouts a chance to camp out, meet new
friends, learn new skills, and enjoy the outdoors. Over the course of its ten
days there are exhibits, stadium shows with entertainment, and opportunities
to work on merit badges. Scouts also get the opportunity to try high-adventure activities including whitewater rafting, rock climbing, ziplining, scuba
diving and mountain biking.
The 2013 Jamboree was the first to be held at its new, permanent home, the
Summit National Scout Reserve in Mount Hope, West Virginia. For the first
time, girls took part: several hundred female Scout Venturers attended the
event. This year’s Jamboree placed special emphasis on physical fitness and
vigorous activity. Every Scout, at some point in the ten day program, was
expected to complete a 3-mile trek up a mountain. ■

Middletown Grange Fair

Did you know that an adult pig can run as fast as a man on a bicycle (about 11 mph)? Or that
there are more chickens living on earth than people? Or that the average Pennsylvania cow produces over 2,200 gallons of milk per year? The Middletown Grange Fair, which came to Wrightstown this year from August 14-18, is always a rare opportunity to learn about farm animals and
to see—and even touch—them up close. The Fair offered rides, demonstrations, food and music
as well as over 500 animals.

Bucks County Dairy Princess.
The role of the Dairy Princess is
to promote Dairy Products and
the Dairy Industry throughout
her county and Pennsylvania.
The Dairy Industry is the largest
part of the agriculture industry in
Pennsylvania, contributing over $6
billion to the state’s economy.
Nicole, 17 years old, is from
Washington’s Crossing and is
the daughter of Craig and Maria
Ender. She began her association
with the dairy industry when she
was 12 and attended a Dairy Day Camp. She became immediately interested
in learning more about caring for dairy cows. She joined 4-H Dairy Club
and started leasing her cows from Sulper Farm in Lambertville, NJ. Lease
arrangements are special agreements in 4-H that allow members who do not
reside on a Dairy Farm to take care of and show a dairy cow in exchange for
helping at the farm. She has been showing cows ever since and plans a future
as a large animal veterinarian.
Nicole has big plans for her year as princess. “We have 23 local dairy farms
in Bucks County,” she said. “The farmers are great stewards of their animals
and land and they provide an important product to our diet. We are so fortunate to have a local source of milk here in Bucks County!”
While other students her age take the summer off, Nicole is busy advocating
for dairy farmers. Her committee uses a wide variety of creative promotions to encourage the public to “Drink Milk.” In between promotions, she
is preparing for the State Dairy Princess pageant which will take place in
Harrisburg in September.
Nicole is joined by a Dairy Court who assist at promotions. They are Sandra
Krone, the Alternate Dairy Princess; Kathleen O’Keefe – Dairy Miss; Anna
Bromley – Dairy Miss; and Niall Gleeson – Dairy Ambassador. Nicole and
her court are available for appearances at schools, scout meetings, and other

Pennsbury Support Staff Votes to OK Pact
Pennsbury School Board’s Chief Negotiator, Jeffrey Sultanik, was notified on Saturday, August 17
that the Pennsbury Educational Support Professionals Association (PESPA) voted to accept the
tentative labor agreement negotiated by union leaders and Mr. Sultanik. The next step is for School
Board to consider approving the new contract
during the public meeting scheduled for Thursday,
August 29.
Pennsbury’s support professionals, totaling approximately 650 staff members, include all bus drivers,
custodians, maintenance employees, paraprofessionals, and secretaries, among other positions. The
previous PESPA contract expired on June 30, 2011.
The six-year deal is structured to begin retroactively on July 1, 2011 and concludes on June 30,
2017. By the administration’s estimate, the new
agreement will save the School District upwards of
$9 million from the 2013-2014 fiscal year to 20162017, an unprecedented amount.
In anticipation of these contract negotiations, the
School Board explored the cost of outsourcing
various employee services. These included trans-
portation, cleaning, IT support, and other groups.
“As the board considered the significant cost savings that could be realized from outsourcing employee services, the need for a more concessionary
contract emerged,” said Mr. Sultanik. “By focusing
on more cost-sharing in the provision of healthcare
coverage for employee family members, the Board
and the PESPA leadership were able to reach an
agreement that offered both job security and annual
pay increases.”
[As part of the agreement] From 9/1/2013 to
6/29/2017, [there will be] no additional subcontracting of Bargaining Unit work unless: 1) no
reasonably available qualified individuals are
available to fill the positions; 2) there are emergent reasons to fill quickly; 3) the Bargaining Unit
agrees to the subcontracting; 4) there has been an
historical practice of subcontracting that work.
School Board President, Allan Weisel, offered
gratitude to the PESPA organization for accepting
the concessionary terms of the tentative agreement. “These negotiations occurred during an
extremely difficult time for all 500 school districts
across the state of Pennsylvania,” said Mr. Weisel.
“Districts are strapped for cash— primarily due to
the dramatic spike in pension payments for public
school employees —and Board members across the
state have become more vigilant than ever about
containing costs. This agreement not only offers
job security to these employees, but it also allows
for salary increases totaling 9% over the final three
years of the contract. By agreeing to shoulder more
of their family healthcare costs, PESPA employees
are demonstrating their willingness to work in cooperation with the Board. By doing so, we can all
work together to maintain the excellent standards
that are the hallmarks of a Pennsbury education.”
The Board will meet next on Thursday, August 29
at 8pm in the multi-purpose room at Fallsington Elementary School. This will be the first meeting of
the 2013-2014 academic year. The PESPA agreement will appear as an item under “New Business”
on the Board’s agenda. ■

In Memory of Dana Bate
Dana Bate, a multi-talented writer, artist and
actor who lived in Bristol, passed away on
July 29 from severe pneumonia. “He fought
till the end,” said his friend and fellow artist
Linda Reboh. “Even on oxygen he asked us
to get him a beer and a cigarette.” Ms. Reboh
recounted a favorite anecdote about Mr. Bate.
“A broadcaster once took credit for something
Dana had created. He was asked by a friend
if that bothered him. ‘They can steal my fish,’
he replied, ‘but they can’t take my ocean.’ He
knew he had an ocean of ideas inside him. So
what if someone stole a fish?” Dana Bate was
a frequent contributing writer for The Levittown Leader. His essays often focused on small
scenes and details of everyday life, in which he
found drama, comedy, and meaning. The essay
below is reprinted from September 2011. ■
To Find Water
It was Summer. I had a job working for a small
radio station in Conway, New Hampshire. My
shift ended at 11 p. m. My summer house was
across the border in Bridgeton, Maine. One night
I was driving home and as I left the last town in
Maine before I got home, just as I was heading up
a short incline my car started to die. Up ahead was a John Deere tractor company. Above the building was a sign identifying it. I
had never seen that sign lit up after the shop was
closed for the day, but on this particular evening
it was. I had just enough speed to coast in under it
and stop.
I got out and opened the hood. By the light of the
John Deere sign I could see immediately what
the problem was. The dull orange colored hose
leading from the radiator had split. The water had
evaporated. All that was left of it was some hissing steam. I found a small piece of metal in the
glove compartment to twist around the hose and
close it off.
When you do any country living there are some
things you learn, and one of them is about what
you always carry in your car: a jack, a tire iron, a
shovel and an empty can. I had an empty oil can

It was a very dark night and very quiet. I knew
that at that hour there would be no other traffic
along that backcountry road. I stood, leaning up
against the fender of my car wondering what to
do.
I knew, at that late hour, there

Then, in the distance, I heard the sound of a bullfrog. Now I don›t know everything about country
living, but one thing I know is that where there is
a bullfrog there is water not far away. So I followed that sound off into the night, stepping on
who knows what kind of terrain, disturbing who
knows what sort of wild life, until I got close to
the sound of the frog. And sure enough there was
a small pond.

Summer Fades, but the Music Lingers On
opener for a performance by Bob Crosby (Bing’s
brother) and his Orchestra.
Even though I’ve lived across from the Falls
Township Community Park (located at 9125 Mill
Creek Road) for 11 years, I had never attended
one of their Sunday Summer Concert Series
performances until recently. I’m not sure whether
it was the fact that I totally dislike being out in the
sticky, humid Bucks County summer weather or
that I’m just a lazy, 77-year old!
A friend talked me into going with her one Sunday evening and since it wasn’t unbearably hot,
I agreed. The concerts last from 6 p.m. until 8
p.m. so at 5:30 p.m. I took a patio chair, and drove
“all the way” over to the Park. Already there were
quite a few people there, around and inside the
Pavilion.
The featured band that evening was the Society
Music Makers. The musicians were getting set up
while some of them were already warming up on
their instruments. I had not known what kind of
music we would hear that night but when I saw
that the players were senior citizens, I correctly
guessed that their style was big band music.
I was especially delighted since back in the early
1930’s, my father had had his own orchestra,
the Midnight Sons, which often played at the
Eating Clubs (similar to fraternities) of Princeton
University and various other social clubs. One
time his band played in New York City as the
What great music and singing we heard that night
from the Society Music Makers! For two hours
we heard great renditions of many of the best:
Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Nat “King” Cole, Duke
Ellington, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, and
many, many more. The band includes 16 musicians and an excellent vocalist named Mickey. I
counted 5 saxophonists/ clarinetists, 4 trombonists, 4 trumpet players, a drummer, a bass guitarist, and the keyboardist, Stan Goldhaber. I was
pleased to see at least one female musician!
What a joy it was to sit back, relax and listen to
this trip down memory lane. I still hear it in my
mind whenever I close my eyes and can hardly
wait to go to another concert in the park!

Levittown Leader reader Joyce Geyer commented on “A Shopping Tour of Old Levittown” [2013 Issue #8], which featured a display of old advertisements from local businesses, many of which are long vanished. “It was fun to see the old prices,” she wrote.
“5 cents for a can of beans at Pantry Pride! A haircut for $1! But most of the ads were
pretty basic and not very imaginative. The 50’s and 60’s were a golden age for advertising in America. Ad agencies felt free to make the most outrageous claims. I thought
your readers might enjoy these old classic ads. Most of them are from that era.” ■

Burglaries have been on the rise in this area
lately. I advise my homeowner friends to leave
a heavy dog chain hanging on the outside knob
of the back door or side door, along with a large
muzzle. Also, a dogfood dish with some dogfood in it. Most burglars will avoid a house that
has a dog, especially a large one.

Well folks, another pond season is heading into the fall. We’ve experienced a very
wet spring/summer season this year. The
pond-keepers biggest challenges are the
Blue Heron and algae. The algae will keep
you from viewing your fish and the Heron
will prevent you from ever seeing your fish
again. After many visits from an area Heron,
we purchased a pond net. Stretched across
the entire pond surface, it eventually deterred
the Heron. Finally the bird stopped coming
to the pond for breakfast and lunch. We can’t
fault the bird for liking fish, but not our pet
fish. The net proved to be wise investment.
As for the algae challenge, I took out the
UV unit and added a ball of barley straw to
the pond. Barley straw has properties that
algae finds offensive. Although the clarity
of the pond water wasn’t 100% clear, it was
“acceptable” during the summer heat wave.
The barley takes about a week before you
will see any improvement in water clarity.

After all the rain we’ve had this summer, ants
may be a problem. Many plants and herbs, including cinnamon, cloves and cayenne pepper,
give off a strong scent that repels ants. You can
sprinkle them on windowsills and by doorways.
Bay leaves can be placed in cabinets and drawers to further deter the pests.

The end of summer is the best time to make certain purchases. Lawnmowers, air conditioners,
patio furniture and pool equipment typically go
on sale around September and October. Stores
are switching over to their fall merchandise and
are looking to clear out any remnants of summertime, even if the weather is still quite warm.
Some stores do this as early as August, when
they are already getting ready to make room for
Halloween and Christmas displays.

The outer layer of the tooth is very porous,
and dark-colored foods and beverages may
stain teeth more easily. The following items
are known to discolor teeth: coffee and tea, red
wine, cola, tomato sauce, and dark fruit juices.
Minimize the consumption of these foods and
use a straw to drink acidic or staining beverages
to keep teeth as white as they can be.

Advertisers can hit every household through the mail, but is anyone paying attention?
