Dear Reader, I am often asked how I keep up with my busy life as a recently re-singled mom of three children, publishing RochesterWomen magazine and Rochester Women’s Business & Resource Directory, volunteering and staying in shape. I tell them it’s because I put my health and well-being a priority, which gives me the energy to do everything else that I do. For my physical and mental health, I cross-train and dance. I competed in the Rochesterfest Triathlon, for the second time, this past summer. My goal wasn’t to win, but to be active and stay healthy. I participate in cycle (spin) classes and swim at the Rochester Area Family YMCA. My gym time is “me time” when I get to escape stresses and pressures, and unwind. In the spring, I joined TriRochester and trained with that group one night a week during the summer. I enjoy multi-sport training, but the most fun I have all week is during Zumba® class at the Y and belly dance class at Rochester International Dance Studio when I get to dance and laugh with other women. Running RochesterWomen magazine is very spiritual to me. It is my way to serve women and the community. One of the best opportunities that help me grow personally and professionally and develop is the Women Entrepreneurs Networking group at the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce. Through this network, I am inspired and supported by other women in business. I hope that the 2012 Rochester Women’s Business & Resource Directory helps you find resources and women in business who help you and your business become happier and healthier. Plus, read our feature article on Well-Being: Happy And Healthy You and meet Linda Christopherson, a woman entrepreneur who knows that the American dream is alive, well and growing. I am thankful for my health, my family and friends, and opportunities to know, serve, work out and laugh with many Rochester area women. Thank you for supporting the 2012 Rochester Women’s Business & Resource Directory. Sincerely, Jorrie L. BEAUTY At Brennan Family Chiropractic and Nutrition Center, our motto is “Where our Family Cares for Yours!” Since 2006, Dr. Melissa Brennan and her husband, Dr. Jarrod, have focused on care for the whole family. Dr. Melissa has certifications in Pediatrics, Pregnancy, Webster Technique, Acupuncture, and Nutrition Response Testing. In 1997, Dr. Melissa was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. After many years of being on medications and suffering from complications (such as kidney disease, arthritis, sun-sensitivity, butterfly rash, and extreme fatigue), she was motivated to find a more natural approach to treating her disease. She became a Doctor of Chiropractic in 2004 which started her on the road to a healthier, drug-free lifestyle. Today, Dr. Melissa’s lupus is in complete remission. She attributes her health to Chiropractic, Acupuncture, a Whole Food Diet, and Nutritional Supplements. She has taken what most consider an “unfortunate disease of lupus” and turned it into a huge blessing and wonderful opportunity to help others seek more natural ways to improve their health and maintain it for a lifetime. Linda Christopherson is one such entrepreneur and knows all too well that the American dream is alive, well and growing despite the economic outlook. What began in 1994 as a home school project for Linda and her three children with one small button machine and a few hundred 2.25 inch round parts is today one of the nation’s largest and premier custom button manufacturer in the country. With annual revenues over 3 million dollars and 35 full time employees, Affordable Buttons produces and ships more than 40,000 custom buttons per day out of their Rochester location. This steady and continued growth has recently landed Affordable Buttons on the Inc. Magazine’s list of fastest growing private companies in the U.S. “We’ve had steady and significant growth based on continuous innovation, inspiration and unprecedented customer service,” says Christopherson. Their growing customer base of over 60,000 clients include some of the most recognized brands like Disney, 20 2012 Rochester Women’s Business & Resource Directory Google, Best Buy, McDonald’s, Warner Brothers and American Family Association. Early Innovation With a solid can-do attitude, Christopherson taught herself HTML and launched a website, making Affordable Buttons one of the first button companies on the Internet in 1994. This proved to be a major breakthrough for the company as it landed them a large client out of Hollywood, Florida that ordered 250,000 “Too Blessed to Be Stressed” buttons that were distributed as a point of sale item for Walgreens throughout the country. Five tips for growing your business: 1. Know your customers deadlines and meet them each time, every time 2. Limit and minimize waste through efficiency 3. Identify time-sensitive activities and prioritize work flow accordingly 4. Identify problems quickly and find solutions FAST 5. Keep all your promises Opposite page: What began as a home school project with her kids has become a multi-million dollar business for Linda Christopherson and her family. Innovation remains a priority as together Linda and her husband, Tom, a former IBM engineer, continue to customize their technology needs in order to standardize sales, streamline production and insure on time fulfillment. The customized system allows Affordable Buttons to maximize efficiencies and allows all customers to experience the same high level of service, from a Fortune 100 company placing an order of 1 million buttons to an individual placing a small order of ten buttons. Affordable Buttons also engineered a custom button making process that produces a better-looking button that is a true competitive advantage. By printing on clear polyester film instead of paper in reverse image the buttons are brighter, more vivid and scratch resistant. Customer Service With an almost unheard of Better Business Bureau rating of A+ and zero customer complaints, Affordable Buttons strives to exceed customer expectations. When they discovered a growing demand for ship-today service and delivery tomorrow, the team “When we need all hands on deck, everyone will pitch in and assemble buttons,” says Christopherson. invented and mastered a process to ensure client needs were met. “We strive to WOW our customers with the entire process from the initial contact, creatively helping with our designing team to hitting deadline delivery dates. We do this every time for every client,” says Christopherson. In addition, Affordable Button employees are empowered to make decisions and keep things moving for the good of the customer. “Our mantra is if we are competent, we get it right the first time, on time and on budget.” Core Values At the core of the company’s success is a culture of shared values and purpose with a solid work ethic that permeates the entire organization. On a regular basis employees go above and beyond formal responsibilities and job descriptions. “When we have a big order come in and we need all hands on deck, everyone will pitch in and assemble buttons,” explains Christopherson. “It’s not uncommon to see customer service representatives or members of our design team on the production floor.” Since accountability and control is all designed in the custom software, performance and achievement is a shared goal. Expectations and metrics are clearly understood by all team members. Linda also instills an atmosphere of hospitality with “Free lunch Wednesdays,” where she will make a home cooked meal for staff on site. “The simplicity of cooking and sharing a meal together has provided a great opportunity for everyone to connect,” says Christopherson. Affordable Buttons’ cooperative culture of respect, trust and shared purpose not only keeps the team connected, but keeps the business growing. So, the next time you are looking for a project to do with your children, imagine producing thousands and generating millions of dollars, too. Laura Archbold is principal of Encore Public Relations. Three realms to wellness are physical, mental and spiritual health. Physical Health Physical wellness is broad encompassing exercise, diet, sleep and health care. Besides losing weight and toning up, exercise gives a feeling of well-being that can sustain a participant through the six weeks or longer that it can take to observe physical results. Pennie Eisenbeis, group fitness instructor at the Rochester Area Family Y says, “No matter what your fitness level is, just by doing the exercise you feel better.” Some like the accountability that group fitness classes afford. Lisa Butrum says, “I look forward to going to class every week and make every effort to get there instead of finding ways to avoid it.” Amy Nelson says, “Doing Pilates once a week for about a year has made a huge difference in my ab(dominal) strength and flexibility. It took about four sessions to feel that I was getting it, but now, if I miss a week, I can totally tell.” 30 2012 Rochester Women’s Business & Resource Directory Some prefer exercising in solitude. Tricia Arthur says, “I am a running snob. It gets my heart working and my endorphins pumping. All I need is the pavement and a pair of shoes.” Melissa Rivero says, “For me it’s about the outdoors. Nature provides the ambience in the midst of movement, be it hiking, biking, skiing, or canoeing. A bit of nature creates a body of vibrance.” Nourishing your body with good food is another part of physical health. Jen Brewer, author of “All Diets Work: That’s the Problem,” says, “The key to healthy eating habits is to stop trying to find the magic pill, potion, or powder.” Brewer lists four basic principles to healthy eating and living: calories in versus calories out, balancing the basic body ingredients, exercise, and sleep. “A good rule of thumb when building a new habit is to ask yourself, ‘Could I see myself doing this 10 years from now?’” Karla Meyer, the administrative manager at the Good Food Store in Rochester, encourages eating healthy. She suggests consuming whole foods, foods that are unprocessed and unrefined, or processed and refined as little as possible, and do not contain added ingredients, such as sugar, salt or fat. Robin Hoelzle, Group Fitness Coordinator at the Rochester Area Family YMCA, energizes women in her fitness class. Eating well extends beyond the physical. Kari Dunn, manager of the Rochester Downtown Farmers Market, says she feels a “spiritual connection” to food grown locally. The market provides a “social atmosphere,” and buyers are “contributing to the community” by supporting local farmers. Physical wellness also can include proactive or restorative body care including acupuncture and energy work. Our emotions are closely tied to our physical well-being, according to Peggy Huhe of WellSpring Acupuncture. She says that acupuncture needles affect the endocrine system, releasing neuropeptides and giving a “sense of peace” or relaxation as well as greater mental clarity. Rosemary Schliep, owner of Garden of Massage in Rochester, says, “People are happier when they are healthy.” Schliep says Reiki and Healing Touch “clear the energetic fields, thus preventing ‘dis ease’ from attacking the physical body. Energy work and massage have been proven very beneficial for those with depression.” be in harmony for you to stay healthy. They suggest mind-body connection techniques including meditation, prayer, and relaxation and art therapies. Some people explore their spirituality in a church or in a group with a spiritual focus. Others find that pursuing interests and hobbies feeds their souls. Rochester’s Community Education has a selection of classes on many topics such as cooking, foreign language, exercise, travel, and stress management. When you find something you like, make it a priority in your life, even scheduling it on your calendar. Mental Health The way you feel about yourself has a big impact on how you take care of yourself. Focus on a positive self-image, doing things that empower you and that you enjoy. You’ll find that your wellness will make you happier, and your happiness will boost your wellness. Research is showing that mind and body wellness go hand in hand. Medical science is making remarkable discoveries about the relationship between your state of mind and your mental and physical health. The brain produces chemicals that can improve our health, such as endorphins, which are natural painkillers, gamma globulin for immunity and interferon for combating infections, viruses, and even cancer. Joanne Houston of Houston Therapy in Rochester says, “If we are mentally healthy, we tend to get sick less” and be more relaxed when dealing with problems. When we are mentally health dealing with daily or life issues becomes more manageable. “As we age, keeping our brains fit requires deliberate, consistent mental exercise,” explains Jennifer Beyst, owner of LearningRx. Making a plan to learn new things, take on new challenges, and switch up our routines will help us stay mentally healthy. Processing speed, attention, and working memory are the areas that decline noticeably as we age; however, there are a plethora of fun activities that can keep these skills sharp. Chronic stress can impact our memory function, so managing stress is essential for overall brain health. Journaling our own thoughts can help sort and manage stress. Conversations with friends can be great therapy, too, but sometimes professional help is the answer if the problem isn’t getting resolved by talking with friends. Talking with a spiritual leader or participating in spiritual activities can also reduce stress and improve health. “People are happier when they are healthy.” Rosemary Schliep - Garden of Massage Emily Watkins is a freelance writer and co-owner of Empowered Wellness LLP, a new business which promotes practical and functional healthy life choices to suit clients’ personal needs. Fitness, nutrition and other wellness classes and seminars offered. See ad on page 25. Spiritual Health Spiritual health is a third prong of wellness. Our spiritual health gives us inner peace, comfort and connection with ourselves and the world around us. According to Mayo Clinic, mind-body techniques strengthen the communication between your mind and your body. Complementary and alternative medicine practitioners say these two systems must 2012 Rochester Women’s Business & Resource Directory 31 Depression & Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) Sandy E or Jonathan S 507-282-8372 (days) or 507-292-9679 (eves) [email protected] www.dbsalliance.org For those affected and their friends & family members, an opportunity to learn & gather strength.
