WELCOME
Copenhagen is a city of design. And don’t just take our word for it. International design magazine Wallpaper* has hailed Copenhagen as
Design City of the Year 2016. One of the city’s new urban marvels is the Circle Bridge designed by Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson.
The footbridge offers sweeping views of one of the city’s contemporary landmarks, the Black Diamond.
Open, easygoing and liveable, Copenhagen is a city designed for people. With its popular green parks
and streets made for pedal-power, Copenhagen invites you to explore its sights and neighbourhoods by
foot, bicycle, kayak and waterbus. Copenhagen is a city with quality of life, of world-class dining and
innovative New Nordic Cuisine. This issue of ‘Copenhagen Tourist’ lets you discover some of the very best
the Danish capital has to offer and introduces you to the city’s great classic attractions as well as new,
cutting edge urban landmarks, such as the Circle Bridge.
ENJOY!

COPENHAGEN
STRØGET
COPENHAGEN
One mile of history
Copenhagen’s almost one-mile pedestrian street is more than just a retail runway;
it’s also a place of history.
Copenhagen’s main shopping street brims with
department stores and stylish boutiques. But there
is far more to this famous one-mile drag. It’s also
a place of inspiring history. At the Kongens Nytorv entrance to Strøget you find Østergade, which
opens onto one of Copenhagen’s most picturesque squares, Amagertorv. And here the first
thing you should do is look left for a perfect view
to Christiansborg Palace, the Danish parliament.
Surprisingly, the axe-wielding warrior you see on
the rearing equestrian statue is a clergyman.
Namely, Bishop Absalon (1128-1201), who
founded the city in 1167. The Amagertorv fountain with storks and water-spewing toads hasn’t
always been a romantic gathering place. Designed
by one of Denmark’s most renowned sculptors,
Vilhelm Bissen (1836-1913), the fountain was unveiled in 1888 – much to the annoyance of many
townspeople and press critics, who found it hideous and ill-placed in the middle of the heavy
horse-drawn traffic! Scuffles broke out and the
police was called in to dampen tempers.
GALLOWS AND ORGAN MUSIC
The next leg of Strøget, called Vimmelskaftet.
You might hear celestial organ music as you pass
the Church of the Holy Spirit (Helligåndskirken). Daily concerts are given in the seventeenth-
10 CPH-TOURIST. DK
century church. Vimmelskaftet opens onto one
of the city’s most historic squares, each section
with its own name. To the left, Nytorv (New Market), which was created when the city’s old town
hall was reduced to ashes in 1728, and to the right
Gammeltorv (Old Market), which has been a
market square for some 800 years. The centrepiece of Gammeltorv is a renaissance fountain
(1608). The small group of figures shows the embodiment of charity with water spewing from her
breasts. Her two children, one of which, a little
boy, is piddling into the fountain, much like the
Manneken Pis of Brussels. On the Queen’s birthday (16 April) and other state occasions three
golden globes are added to dance atop the water
jets. Facing Nytorv is the neoclassical city magistrate, designed by C. F. Hansen (1756-1845),
who also rebuilt the nearby Church of Our Lady.
In the middle of square a granite plinth marks
where the city’s gallows once stood.
OLSEN’S WORLD CLOCK
The last stretch of Strøget – Frederiksberggade
– takes you to Copenhagen’s City Hall Square
with its romantically eclectic city hall (1905) designed by Martin Nyrop (1849-1921). Here you
can visit the mechanical wonder of Jens Olsen’s
world clock.

Mile-long Strøget is the undisputed shopping mecca of Copenhagen, but the narrow
streets leading off the high street beckon you away from the bustle to revel in their
unique, inviting atmosphere. Take Pistolstræde, a quaint pistol-shaped street (hence
the name) with an entrancing mix of restaurants, exclusive Danish woollens and a
sprinkling of designer hives.

A buzzy blend of hipster hangouts and boutiques
is located along Pilestræde/Kronprinsensgade. An
area home to one of Denmark’s best-known dailies, Berlingske, the one-time journalist dive bars

destrianised high street. Today, the meaty legacy continues in the covered food market, Torvehallerne, which is located close to Nørreport
Station. On your way up Købmagergade, visit the impressive Round Tower, the world’s oldest functioning observatory. Peter the Great once rode
a horse up the winding corridor to the top – but you‘ll have to walk! The
dizzying trek is rewarded with sweeping views of the cityscape. The
church attic also hosts art and design exhibitions.

NYHAVN CANAL
Old sailing ships, storytelling and seafood
The sun-kissed Nyhavn Canal is one of Europe’s most romantic
heritage harbours. Once home to shady sailor’s joints, today’s Nyhavn
is a picture-postcard dining spot, not least on lazy summer days.
COPENHAGEN
Nyhavn Canal has been a designated heritage harbour since 1977, allowing old schooners and vintage sailing vessels to echo the canal’s historic
nautical past. The name, Nyhavn, literally means
‘New Harbour’, although the canal, dug by Swedish prisoners of war between 1671-73, is one of
Copenhagen’s oldest. The ships still carry on the
canal’s maritime traditions, such as the arrival
each September of sailing vessels carrying organic apples and pears from the small islet of Fejø
in the archipelago south of Zealand.
FAIRYTALES, SAILORS
AND ARTISTS
‘The Princess and the Pea’ and ‘The Tinderbox’
were penned by fairytale storyteller Hans Christian Andersen while dwelling at Nyhavn No 20.
He also lived for 17 years at No 18 until his landlord, a sea captain, sent him packing at short notice. And if you feel a yearning for the sea yourself then board one of the canal boats for a tour
of the city’s waterways or check the daytrip offerings by island-bound vessels at the end of the
canal where you can also enjoy waterside lunches and refreshments at the new harbourside Royal Danish Playhouse. From here you can take regular waterbuses to the city’s docklands. Close to
Nyhavn Canal by Kongens Nytorv you also find
Charlottenborg Palace from the 1670s, an edifice
now home to Kunsthal Charlottenborg, a contemporary art centre.
Events and festivals
Nyhavn Canal hosts a wide range of events
including jazz festivals and the Midsummer
Eve’s Festival. For information on events

MARITIME HERITAGE
A tax break is what it took for King Christian IV
(1577-1648) to lure merchants to build their warehouses in the city’s new Dutch-inspired canal district, Christianshavn (Christian’s Harbour),
founded in 1618. Today, you can experience several of the old eighteenth century warehouses
from within. One is home to the Danish Architecture Centre. Another is now the North Atlantic House, a culture centre home to the two-star
Michelin restaurant Noma, serving Nordic gourmet cuisine. And the old canal side seamen’s hospital today houses the Royal Danish Naval Museum with its fine collection of battleship models. Towering above it all is one of Europe’s most
magnificent late-Baroque church spires, that of
the Our Saviour’s Church. Jules Verne climbed
the spire in the 1880s and was inspired to include
it in his ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’. And
Our Saviour’s Church (1680s) is designed in the
Baroque style by royal master builder general
Lambert van Haven. The spire was added in the
mid-eighteenth century by Lauritz de Thurah,
who sought inspiration in the winding spire of
the University Church Sant’ Ivo della Sapienza
in Rome. The exterior spiral stairway has no less
than 150 daunting steps. And crowning the spire
is a golden globe with a three-meter figure of
Christ wielding a victory banner. The magnificent altar, designed by Nicodemus Tessin, was
commissioned in 1694 and draws inspiration from
the altar of Santi Domenico e Sisto in Rome,
sculpted by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Regular church
concerts are performed on the magnificent Botzen
Brothers organ (built 1696-1698).

GREEN AND CREATIVE
Rowdy seamen’s bars have always been part of
Christianshavn’s life, but although most have now
been transformed into watering holes for café society, Christianshavn still has edge. In the 1970s
much of its green area became a new utopia of
the flower-power generation, called Christiania.
Today its 2000 citizens welcome visitors to their
funky blend of eateries, concert venues and bars.
And in the 1990s, much of the former naval harbour Holmen was remodelled into modern dockland living. Its seventeenth-century naval boathouses are also home to the city’s academies of
architecture, design, rhythmic music and filmmaking. Holmen’s main attraction is the city’s
new waterside Opera House.

the chance to visit quaint old boatmen’s houses and browse vintage
design boutiques and art galleries
THE ROYAL PALACE
Now known as Amalienborg Palace, the royal district’s four most splendid Rococo mansions surrounding a monumental octagonal plaza are today the official residences of the Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II, and the Prince Consort, Henrik, as well as Crown Prince Frederik, his wife,
Crown Princess Mary – originally from Tasmania and their four young children. Visitors can always see when the royal families are in residence
– when the royal ensign flies from their private
mansion. For a closer look at royal life, the Amalienborg Museum offers access to several historic royal chambers (see page 38).
Originally, the four mansions of Amalienborg
Palace were the homes of noblemen until a winter’s night in 1794 when the former royal palace,
Christiansborg Palace, was razed by a great fire
26 CPH-TOURIST. DK
and the Danish royal family fell in dire need of a
new home. Following renaissance ideals, Amalienborg Palace was created on the transverse axis running through the royal district from the Marble
Church to the harbour, complete with an equestrian statue of the district’s founder, Frederik V.
By the harbourside you can visit Amaliehaven, a
small leafy park with gushing fountains.
THE MARBLE CHURCH
A grand palatial district celebrating the 300th anniversary of the Oldenborg royal dynasty – that
was the vision of King Frederik V. The grand renaissance scheme, modelled by architect Nicolai
Eigtved and named Frederiksstaden, came under
way in the 1740s.
The centrepiece of the new royal district was
to be a grand basilica, and although the found-
CHANGING OF THE GUARDS
The changing of the royal guards at Amalienborg
Palace takes place at 12 o’clock noon, and when
the Queen is home they also strike up the band. The
parade leads the royal guards from Rosenborg Palace through the pedestrianised heart of town to

ing stone of the Marble Church (also known as
Frederik’s Church) was laid in 1749 the church
stood as a mere project-in-the-making for more
than a century while the grand project fell out of
grace with the king’s successors. In 1874, the site
was sold to a wealthy Danish industrialist and patron of the arts, C. F. Tietgen (1828-1901), under
the condition that he concluded the project within ten years. Nonetheless, it took a further decade and countless design revisions by architect F.
Meldal (1827-1908) before the church was finally consecrated.
GALLERIES AND
BOATMEN’S HOUSES
Vintage Danish design stores and contemporary
art galleries flank today’s Bredgade, one of Frederikstaden’s two main arteries. Here you also find
one of the nation’s leading decorative art museum, Designmuseum Danmark (see page 84). Be
sure to notice some of the small surprises, such
as the golden onion domes of the Russian Alexander Nevsky Church (1883) and Medical Museion (see page 80), the Copenhagen University
medical history museum. Reaching the end of the
street, when heading from Kongens Nytorv, turn
left to discover a unique neighbourhood, Nyboder. The boatmen’s row houses, lime-washed
with a warm yellow hue, were commissioned in
1631 by one of Denmark’s most enterprising renaissance monarchs, King Christian IV who with
this new neighbourhood created homes for the personnel of the rapidly growing Royal Danish Navy.
AMALIENBORG PALACE
Complete your visit to the palace square – step inside Amalienborg and
experience royal life past and present. Amalienborg presents the private
interiors of the most recent kings and queens and an exhibit on the
monarchy today and its many traditions.
The scope of the museum stretches back 150
years to Christian IX and Queen Louise, who
were known as “the in-laws of Europe” because
four of their children ascended to the thrones
of England, Greece, Russia and Denmark respectively. The museum collection bears witness
to a strong family bond with many paintings and
cherished photographs of the large family.
As in a journey through time the rooms of
Christian IX, Queen Louise and th eir descendants stand intact. Each reflects the modern taste
of its period and the personalities of the kings
and queens, whether it is in military, Victorian,
or knightly style.
The large garden room offers an insight into
royal life and the monarchy in the 21st century.
Royal life entails many duties and traditions, and
there is plenty of opportunity to explore them
and gain an understanding of what it means to
be royal today.
Amalienborg represents the zenith of Danish
rococo architecture, and an interactive part of
the exhibition is devoted to its history. This includes the French sculptor Saly’s equestrian figure on the palace square, which is one of the
world’s finest.
On some days there is admittance to the royal reception rooms on the piano nobile, which
are still used by the royal family. Check the open-

AN ENDURING SYMBOL OF LOVE
PAUSTIAN
A waterside building by Sydney Opera House architect

the city’s largest furniture design stores, Paustian

A controversial mermaid, her ‘ugly sister’ and
a star-shaped citadel draw visitors and locals to
Copenhagen’s harbour promenade.
For almost a century, the Little Mermaid statue, the embodiment of Hans
Christian Andersen’s fairytale, has perched on her stone by Langelinje,
the Copenhagen harbour promenade. Here the Little Mermaid cuts a
tragic figure, suffering for her dream prince. Small wonder that she has
often been the victim of rebellion and controversy. Radical feminists have
painted her over; she’s been beheaded by maverick artists (twice!) and
there has even been an attempt to blow her up with explosives. But whatever emotions the Little Mermaid stirs, she is undeniably an enduring
and universal symbol of romantic love. The Little Mermaid statue was
created by Danish sculptor Edward Eriksen (1876-1959), who used his
wife Eline as a model.

THE ‘UGLY SISTER’
AND THE GEFION MYTH
Every fairytale has an ‘ugly sister’, and five minutes walk from the Little
Mermaid in the direction of the cruise ships brings you to a genetically
tweaked mermaid with iconoclastic reference to Edward Eriksen’s Little
Mermaid. In the opposite direction, towards Esplanaden, you find a
thundering fountain depicting a scene from Norse mythology in which
the goddess Gefion drives her plough through the waters of Lake Vänern
to create the island of Zealand, having first turned her four sons into
oxen, who perish from exhaustion following their daunting feat. The
fountain was created by the Danish sculptor Anders Jensen Bundgaard
in 1908.
THE CITADEL
Close by is the entrance to Kastellet – one of the best-preserved seventeenth-century fortifications in Northern Europe. Shaped as a star pentagram, the citadel still houses military offices and has its own historic

Ancient oaks and roaming deer – just north of Copenhagen
you find Jægersborg Dyrehave, a 350-year-old royal hunting

world’s oldest amusement park, Bakken.
It’s little more than a hop and a skip from central Copenhagen. Just 20 minutes by direct train to Klampenborg Station
you reach the ancient oaks of a 350-year-old royal game park
with more than 2,000 roaming red deer and fallow deer. You
can explore this UNESCO World Heritage site by horse and

also rent a mountain bike and go-pro camera for a more
rough-and-tumble experience.

The car-free woodland is also the unlikely home of the world’s
oldest amusement park, Bakken (originally a religious pilgrimage site from 1583). The folksy park is a great place for
the family to let off steam with more than 33 rides and amusements to choose from. You’ll find leafy inns and restaurants
dotted around the park and in the woodlands by the sandy
Bellevue Beach, including the Michelin-starred Røde Cottage. Design buffs also will note that the 1930s modernist
beachside complex was designed by one of Denmark’s most
famous architects, Arne Jacobsen. There is truly something
for everyone - children, nature-lovers and gourmands alike
– at Jægersborg Dyrehave.

HAMLET’S ELSINORE
– TO GO OR NOT TO GO…
Only 45 minutes by train from Copenhagen, many
travellers make their way to the historic town of
Elsinore/ Helsingør for the sheer romance of
Kronborg Castle, the fictional home of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. But the town itself, with its
quaint cobbled courtyards and merchant houses, is equally worth the pilgrimage.
Once negotiating the narrow sea passage –
called the Sound – between Elsinore in Denmark
and Helsingborg in Sweden was no easy deal. In
1429, Danish King Erik of Pomerania decreed
that all passing ships had to make port of call in
Elsinore to pay the so-called ‘Sound Dues’, or
else they would face the inconvenience of royal
cannon fire. This lucrative arrangement not only
filled the royal coffers but also generated a thriving commerce in the heritage town.
A recent addition to the Elsinore’s harbourside attractions is the new Maritime Museum of
Denmark. Leading Danish architectural practice
BIG designed the underground museum, which
is accessed through the old dry docks.
Elsinore is also home to the Danish Museum of
Science and Technology, an adventurous place
with vintage airplanes and automobiles.
The northern coast of the town boasts a wide
sandy beach, and right by the marina there is a
small aquarium, Øresundsakvariet, with local fish
and sea creatures. You can even join rangers on
porpoise watching trips in fast-going RIB boats.
The Shakespeare 400th
anniversary
Kronborg Castle has staged Shakespeare’s plays
for centuries – as far back as in the early years
of Shakespeare’s authorship. Each year in
August, the fictional home of Hamlet plays host
an international Shakespeare festival in the
castle courtyard with performances by leading
international stars, often in association with the
Royal Shakespeare Company in England. In
2016, the three-week event at Kronborg Castle
will include concerts and films. For further festival information, visit www.cph-tourist.dk

Kronborg is a must-see! Hamlet’s Castle in Elsinore is a

HAMLET MOVES INTO
KRONBORG CASTLE
This year marks the 400th anniversary of the death of
William Shakespeare. Kronborg Castle, the home of
Hamlet, is marking this occasion by celebrating Shakespeare’s immortal play Hamlet with a cocktail of theatrical adventure, drama and festivities in the magnificent halls of the castle.
William Shakespeare made the little Danish
royal palace in Elsinore world famous when in
1603 he published the much-loved play about the
tragic fate of the Danish prince Hamlet.
Over the summer, Hamlet, Ophelia, Polonius,
the ghost and many other familiar characters will
move from the pages of the play straight onto the
set of Kronborg Castle.
Smoke will descend in a mysterious veil of
mist, swords will clash senng sparks flying in the
air, and blood will flow as Hamlet unleashes a furious frenzy of revenge. Visitors will be stepping
right into this world at Kronborg, never knowing quite who they will meet and when.
There will be an atmosphere of tension, fear,
intrigue and – true to the spirit of Shakespeare –
lashings of comedy and madcap performances
that will tickle your sense of humour. The theatrical Hamlet experience “HAMLET LIVE” is for
both children and adults.
CASEMATES,
HOLGER THE DANE
A damp, musty smell greets you when you move
down the stairs to the casemates beneath the castle. Here the ancient Danish hero Holger the
Dane sits ready to be roused to battle if Denmark
needs him.
A MUST-SEE
‘Hamlets Castle in Elsinore’ is a must-see for everyone who visits Copenhagen and Northern Zealand. This World Heritage monument offers
enough experiences for a whole day – but can still
be seen in an hour.
HOW TO GET THERE
Kronborg is situated only 45 minutes from Copenhagen. You can take the train directly from

many symbolic decorative elements, such as statues and reliefs, the impressive Neptune Fountain and the marble gallery. During the eighteenth century the castle fell out of use as a royal residence, but kept its ceremonial function.
During the era of absolute monarchy (16601848), the kings of Denmark were anointed in
the chapel, and later, under the influence of Romantic nationalism, the castle attained status as
a national monument.
THE MUSEUM OF
NATIONAL HISTORY
In 1859, a dramatic fire destroyed the greater
part of the castle interiors. Only the chapel and
the audience chamber with their original and
sumptuous ornamentations escaped the fire.
Founder of the Carlsberg Breweries J.C. Jacobsen took an active interest in the restoration of
the castle, and in 1878 he established the Museum of National History. He also donated the
funds, and the museum was established as a department of the Carlsberg Foundation, as it is
still today. The museum illustrates 500 years of
Danish history through portraits, history paintings, furniture and decorative art. The historical interiors of the museum and the splendorous rooms of the castle, such as the chapel, the
Audience Champer, and the Great Hall, give a
sensuous impression of changing styles and epochs. The modern department on the top floor
features a substantial collection of twentieth and
twenty-first century portraits and history paintings as well as the museum’s photo gallery.

in the 1720s and was re-established in 1996. A

in the Middle Ages and the other in modernity. Odense was
Denmark’s largest provincial city, but at a time when superstition was still an important part of city life and the writer’s
childhood. Odense has changed a lot since then, though there
are still buildings and places that look like they did in the storyteller’s day. If you follow the footsteps around the city centre, you will easily find the Hans Christian Andersen Museum

Crown Jewels and Royal Regalia.
Rosenborg Castle was built by one of the most
famous Scandinavian kings, Christian IV, in the
early 17th century. Christian IV fathered more
than 20 children, was a patron of the arts and
built some of the most significant buildings in
Copenhagen. Of his many castles, Rosenborg
became his favorite.
Today, the glory of the past can be experienced through the impressive possessions of
Christian IV and his descendants. Among the
main attractions is the Great Hall with the coronation thrones and three life-size silver lions
standing guard.
The king’s coronation throne is made of narwhale tusk with gilt figures, while the queen’s is
of silver. Tapestries on the walls commemorate
battles between Denmark and Sweden.
The interiors are well-preserved and invite the
visitor to take a journey in time. The visitor can
experience the king’s private writing cabinet, his
bathroom, and see wax figures of former royal
inhabitants. Rosenborg also houses an exquisite
collection of Flora Danica and one of the
world’s finest Venetian glass collections, both set
in tower chambers.
The crowns of the Danish kings and queens are
kept in special vaults with access from Rosenborg’s basement. The crowns are embellished with
table-cut stones, enamel and gold ornamentation.
They were last used for coronations in 1840.
The crown jewels are living treasures, as they
are the only ones in the world which are both
displayed to the public and in royal use, by HM
Queen Margrethe. They primarily consist of
four garnitures: a diamond set, a ruby set, a pearl
set, and an emerald set – the emeralds being
among the world’s finest.

Exhibitions
SMK National Gallery of Denmark
played in four permanent exhibitions which gives
you the best of everything: paintings, sculptures,
drawings, graphics, photography, video works
and installation art – in short 700 years of art
in the heart of Copenhagen. The SMK is especially famous for its beautiful collection of Danish Golden Age art, the country’s most comprehensive collection of Danish contemporary art
and one of the world’s best Matisse collections.
See it all, or just what you feel for. Spend five
hours or five minutes. It’s always free.

The SMK is the National Gallery of Denmark and the largest art museum
in the country. Every day we study art, restore it, photograph it, move it,
exhibit it, and discuss it. And every day we are surprised by art in at least
as many different ways as there are people at the museum. We invite you
to explore art in your own way as you join us for new exhibitions, performances, concerts, art talks, films, and creative workshops. Welcome to
the SMK. We look forward to seeing you! Go to smk.dk for more information.
MASTERPIECES AND CUTTING-EDGE CONTEMPORARY ART
At the SMK you can enjoy the grand masters of art history, along with cutting edge
contemporary artists and rising stars of the art scene. No other museum in Denmark shows such a rich and varied selection of art – from the European classics of
the renaissance to the overwhelming diversity of modern and contemporary art. Here
you will find gems by artists such as Rembrandt, Nolde, Derain, Rubens, Matisse,
Hammershøi, Munch, Danh Vo, and Elmgreen & Dragset. The collections are dis-

ARCHITECTURE
AND HISTORY
The museum architecture is a marriage of old
and new. The glass-roofed Sculpture Street
bridges the modern extension from 1998, designed by architect Anna Maria Indrio, and the
original museum building from 1896 by J. Vilhelm Dahlerup. The museum’s original collection belonged to the Danish King. In 1827, the

royal collection went on public display at Christiansborg Palace, but in 1884 the palace was reduced to ashes in a great fire. Most of the artworks were miraculously saved, and plans were
made for a National Gallery that was to house
the collections. In 1896 the SMK opened its doors
to the public for the first time. The most recent
addition to the museum is the museum garden,
where you can relax and enjoy a cup of coffee –
a leisure activity that the Copenhageners have already taken to heart.

THE
DAVID
COLLECTION
Davids Samling
The home of one of the world’s finest collections
of Islamic art and of unique collections of European
and Danish art.
Painting pasted on an album leaf “Ma’ali Mian Saif al-Mulk being shown some jewels.”
Attributed to Venkatchellam, India, Hyderabad, c. 1795. Photo: Pernille Klemp.
Located in the heart of Copenhagen across from the King’s Gardens, the
David Collection offers an inspiring atmosphere of elegant nineteenthcentury interiors and fine collections of furniture, porcelain, silver, and
works by renowned Danish artists, from Golden Age painters Jens Juel
and Christen Købke to the internationally acclaimed Vilhelm Hammershøi. Then enter a completely different cultural sphere through one of the
world’s most significant collections of Islamic art.
THE SWEEP OF HISTORY
The David Collection was founded in 1945 in the home of Christian Ludvig David (1878-1960), a lawyer who collected European fine and applied
art from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as well as Islamic art
from the seventh to the nineteenth century. Since the death of C. L. David, the foundation that he created has continued to expand the collections – particularly that of Islamic art.
THE COLLECTIONS
The museum comprises three permanent collections.
ISLAMIC ART
The internationally acclaimed collection of Islamic art is among the world’s
most important. On display is art from the Islamic cultural sphere: ceramics, textiles, glass, metalwork, and paintings from Spain in the west to India in the east. The impressive collection takes you on a magical quest
through 1,200 years of art history.

EUROPEAN EIGHTEENTHCENTURY ART
The collection of European eighteenth-century
art is displayed in period rooms furnished and
decorated with porcelain and silverware to offer
an impression of a 200-year-old private residence.
DANISH EARLY MODERN ART
The collection of Danish early modern art (18801950) was curated by C. L. David himself, which
is why the museum has chosen to introduce the
founder before you enter the main exhibition of
sculptures, ceramics, and paintings by such masters as Vilhelm Hammershøi and J. F. Willumsen. Until the museum in 2009 remodeled and
expanded, this collection had not been on permanent public display for many years.

The Glyptotek was founded by the brewing magnate Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914). A passionate collector, he built a world-class collection of art and

RUDOLPH TEGNER
MUSEUM
AND STATUEPARK
One single artist and his passion
Discover a talented Danish artist Rudolph Tegner
(1873-1950) who in the shadows of the naturalism fought to find an expression that would move
the viewer and take danish sculpture to a new level. The heretage of Auguste Rodin and Michelangelo is obvious in the early years.
He build his own museum in a peculiar area
on the northcoast of Sealand covered by heath
and founded his Statuepark here with 14 beautiful sculptures raised against the sky with a backdrop of heath and coastline. The museum points
toward the modernism built in concrete in the
same years where Arne Jacobsen made his famous

ARKEN lies like a stranded ship on an island
close to Køge Bay and is beautifully placed in the
beach park, creating harmony between the museum’s characteristic maritime architecture and
the surrounding landscape. The building, which
is one of the most distinctive edifices of the 1990s,
definitely merits a visit in itself.
Inside visitors can enjoy internationally rated art exhibitions. In 2016 the museum presents
several special exhibitions and a permanent exhibition, including works by the controversial
British artist Damien Hirst, the German rising
star Anselm Reyle and the Chinese artist and
social critic Ai Weiwei.
ARKEN also has a wonderful museum shop
packed with interesting design articles and a café,
where visitors can enjoy the chef’s delicious food.
ARKEN Museum of Modern Art is right on the beach.
So why not combine art with beautiful nature and
possibilities of relaxing.

A unique museum dedicated
to art in public spaces
KØS is Denmark’s museum of art in public spaces – and one of the only museums of its kind in
the world. In its exhibitions, research, and presentation activities the museum addresses the
unique challenges and opportunities that art encounters when it enters the public sphere. KØS
presents fascinating chapters from art history
within this particular field – ranging from public
art’s relationship with Crown and Church to our
present-day welfare society where art is an integral part of public-sector institutions and is used
as a vehicle for urban development.
In 2016 visitors can enjoy a strong selection of
works from the museum’s huge collection, which
encompasses more than 18,000 sketches, designs,
and models for art in public spaces. Featuring
new acquisitions as well as much-loved classics,
the exhibition 15 Favourites from the Collection
presents a selection of works that spans widely
different modes of artistic expression – from Mogens Møller’s thought-provoking interpretation
of classic motifs to prominent female artists onwards to Elmgreen & Dragset’s merman sculpture “Han” (He) and Paul Gernes’s colourful art
work for the Gurre bunker, which will be partially reconstructed at this exhibition. You will also
see works by Ann Lislegaard, Lene Adler Petersen, Edvard Eriksen, Bjørn Nørgaard, Albert
Mertz, Susanne Ussing, Jørgen Nash, Signe Gut-
Finally, visitors can enjoy the acclaimed Danish
artist Bjørn Nørgaard’s designs for the Queen of
Denmark’s tapestries – a particular highlight in
the permanent collection. These full-scale drawings present vivid tableaux from 1,000 years of
Danish history and will be on display from September 15.
The KØS Museum of art in public spaces offers a museum café and shop. The museum is located just a two-minute walk from Køge station
(35 minutes from Copenhagen).

The exhibitions show highlights from Danish history. In the exhibition Danish Prehistory you will
find the 3400-year-old unique Sun Chariot drawn
by a horse and the Egtved Girl from 1370 BC lying peacefully in her coffin. Or see the Vikings’

In the Children’s Museum kids can play their way through history and get a feeling of different cultures and ages. The “Grandma’s Wardrobe” exhibition let them try on dresses from when
grandma was a little girl and sailor’s suit from when great-granddad was young. They can play on an exact copy of a Viking ship,
where they get to clamber on board and imagine they are sailing
