Event Guide - Human / Ties
Human/Ties is a four-day celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the National Endowment for
the Humanities. From September 14-17, 2016, some of America’s leading thinkers will gather
at the University of Virginia to honor the NEH’s rich history and explore the vital role that
humanities play in our increasingly interconnected and complex world.
The forum features lectures, panel discussions, performances, film screenings, interviews, and art
exhibits by scholars, writers, artists, cultural experts, and more. All events are free and open to
the public.
The NEH was born September 29, 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the
National Arts and Humanities Act into law. The legislation marked our nation’s first significant
investment in the study of its culture. Fifty years and $5.3 billion in NEH grants later, Human/
Ties will return to the NEH’s roots — and consider how the humanities can contribute to the
“current conditions of national life.” What do the humanities have to say about challenging
questions concerning war, race, the environment, citizenship, and technology today? We look
forward to discovering answers to those questions at Human/Ties.
This event guide is intended to be used alongside our website, http://humanties2016.com/.
Inside this guide, you’ll find an event schedule and maps to indicate venue, parking, hotel, and
restaurant locations. While you’re here for Human/Ties, we hope you take full advantage of all
Charlottesville, Virginia, has to offer — from a historic downtown and thriving dining scene to
countless opportunities for outdoor exploration, and more.
Human/Ties is sponsored by the University of Virginia, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Andrew W.
Mellon Foundation, and numerous other partners.

Charlottesville SOUP
A program of New City Arts, SOUP is a seasonal public dinner series to support creative projects in Charlottesville. Founded in
January 2013 by a group of three artists, Charlottesville SOUP was inspired by a national network of micro-grant funding dinners for
the arts. In partnership with Human/Ties, 4 artist finalists will present technology-themed proposals during a community meal, and
attendees will vote for the project of their choice to be crowd-funded by ticket sales at the end of the meal. Tickets were pre-sold for
this event, and the event has sold out.
