The Hungarian Athletics Association, supported by the Hungarian Open Air Museum (Skanzen), has presented an excellent and exciting proposal to European Athletics for an innovative course to be created and we are looking forward to a memorable 19th edition of the championships. It will be the first time Hungary will have hosted the SPAR European Cross Country Championships and I am confident that the local organising committee are doing their utmost to ensure a successful event takes place in the town of Szentendre in December 2012. Athletics is a popular sport in Hungary with the country boasting some excellent athletes and we hope this translates to a well-received event among fans of our sport. The discipline of cross country is growing to be an ever more important part of athletics during the winter months. The SPAR European Cross Country Championships are always an exciting and interesting competition, with the added dimension of also being a team event. The combination of the beautiful local environment in Szentendre and the obstacles on the course will provide a memorable experience for athletes, officials and fans alike. I would like to thank in advance the Hungarian athletics federation, the Budapest 2012 local organising committee and the Hungarian Open Air Museum for their hard work now and in the future with regards to the organisation of the championships. I hope that Budapest 2012 continues the success story of the SPAR European Cross Country Championships and I look forward to meeting Europe’s cross country family in December 2012 in Hungary. Hansjörg Wirz European Athletics President 2 www.exch2012budapest.hu WELCOME MESSAGE Just a few months following the London Summer Olympic Games, in December 2012 a new challenge awaits the very best distance runners of Europe as they stand up to each other to decide the fate of medals and places in what is one of the most picturesque cross country courses in Hungary. Over recent years the Hungarian Athletics Association has made great strides to return to the map of European Athletics. We signalled our intent to do so by being the second member federation to host the European Convention in the fall of 2009, and welcomed back the European Athletics Family the very next summer for the European Team Championships 1st League in Budapest. The next step in our quest is when we play host to the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in a nature conservation area. The Natural Outdoor Museum, more commonly referred to as „Skazen” established in 1967 is a fitting venue for the event. The unique blend of sport, culture and national heritage promises an unprecedented experience for the participants and we can only hope that a traditional setting, which is also prepared to accommodate for 21st centruy needs, will aid the performance of the athletes as well as guarantee the utmost comfort of our guests. Being a traditionally successful throwing nation at international level, cross country running represents a new angle in which we regard athletics in Hungary. Originating from a Health and Fitness project sponsored by the European Commission, there is now a six-week long competition series scattered all over the country which draws the interest of thousands of youngsters wanting to run in a natural environment. The SPAR European Cross Country Championships will be the culmination of this series and the first time in the life of many to witness such a high level of international competition. Dear athletes and coaches! At the end of what was certainly a great outdoor season in 2012, with athletics having taken a historical step and introducing the first ever European Championships in an Olympic year, we will be waiting to welcome you in December to a demanding course within a setting which gives account of not only the architecture, the lifestyle and the heritage but also the history of our country. We wish that all the dreams you may have come true in Hungary!. See you in Budapest! Dear Competitiors, Visitors, Guests, I am happy to welcome you in the Skanzen of Szentendre, the largest open air ethnographical collection of Hungary. This is the first time that our museum provides a venue for such a prestigious international sports competition. We are proud that the Hungarian Athletics Association and the European Athletics have found this venue suitable for organizing the 19th European Cross Country Championships. The museum presents the vernacular architecture of Hungary’s most characteristic regions, the way of life and habits of people who lived there from the second half of the 18th century to the middle of the 20th century. People can visit almost 300 buildings including churches, barns, houses, stables, pigsties, mills, etc. – in the area of about 60 hectares. Runners will often pass near barns or press houses during the competition. When the museum was founded in 1967, the main aspect was that the area should the topography of the country reflect in the best possible way - flats, hills, mountains, slopes - and now these are the very conditions that allow the museum to organize a cross country championship. At the same time, vernacular culture itself is not far from this sport, either, because one or two hundred years ago - in the absence of built roads and means of transport - village people walked in the natural, untouched environment, accommodating to the challenges of the varied topography. The museum is a nature reserve – it is tranquil with clean air and beautiful views. I do wish a successful and memorable SPAR European Cross Country Championships to each and every participant in this wonderful natural environment! The venue is located in the town of Szentendre (St. Andrew in Hungarian) just 7km north of the capital of Hungary, Budapest. You can easily reach Budapest by plane, by rail, by road and even by water via the river Danube. Ferenc Liszt International Airport serves flights to all major European cities daily and despite being approximately 45km from your accommodation it is easily reachable via the highway. If you decide to travel by rail, Budapest has three main railway stations: the Eastern, the Western and the Southern railway stations all receive international passengers. If you travel by road, the M1 motorway connects directly to Vienna and to Bratislava to the west, while the M7 motorway connects to Ljubljana and Zagreb to 6 the southwest. Towards the east, there is the M3 motorway leading you in from the Ukraine, while if you come through Serbia you can use the M5 motorway to reach the capital. There is an unmistakable feeling that something out of the ordinary is just around the corner, but what it will be is up to you to find out… Budapest Szentendre In Szentendre, a town of just 25 000 inhabitants located a mere 5km north of the border of Budapest, you’ll experience a Mediterranean atmosphere that few other Hungarian settlements can offer you. Stroll down Görög utca form Main Square lined with apartments of Greek families and you’ll reach the peaceful promenade on the the Danube bank. The crooked coble-stoned streets abound in shops offering all sorts of souvenirs, embroidered tablecloths and shirts, pottery, wines, paprika, that you can take home to your loved ones. For Hungaricum (Hungarian food and beverage specialities pop in the Paprika Ház in downtown Szentendre where you can buy Tokaji wine, pálinka (Hungarian fruit brandy, Hungarian paprika powder, and goose liver. Szentendre www.exch2012budapest.hu 7 THE INTRODUCTION OF SKANZEN Skanzen – The Hungarian Open Air Museum Situated in the Duna-Ipoly National Park, on more then one hundred acres, the Hungarian Ethnographic Museum makes it possible for the visitor to capture the authentic lifestyle and the atmosphere of village life of the past two and a half centuries. More then 300 different buildings: fully furnished relocated houses, real scale farmyards, stables, press houses, cellars, barns, sties, mills, churches – and last but not least gardens, meadows, fields cultivated in a traditional way and arranged in original settlement patterns are waiting our guests. If you would like to discover rural Hungary, in the Skanzen you will find an enchanting landscape divided in 8 village-like regional units, representing 8 different areas of the country: the Upland Market Town – where the world famous Tokaji wine is from, the Northern Hungarian Village – maybe the most interactive section of the museum, the Upper-Tisza region, which was the very first element of the Museum’s history and where the wooden Belfry (symbol of Skanzen) is located, The Great Hungarian Plain – maybe the most known and typical part of the country, with its windmill and functioning bakery, Southern Transdanubia, showing among many other things the deployment of Swabians (ethnic germans) after the 2nd World War, Bakony, Balaton Uplands whit its working watermill and the Western Transdanubia region with its relocated elementary school from 1826. The Skanzen Railway The 2.2 kilometers long normal track railroad is the longest among the museum railways in Europe. The 80 years old, magnificently renovated train goes around the huge area of the museum with a maximum speed of 15 km/h and can carry 80 passengers on board at the time. It has 6 stops which makes all the regional units are easy to reach. The complete journey takes about 30 minutes. A maximum of 8 (eight) athletes in each event may be entered per Member Federation, of which a maximum of 6 (six) may participate. Each team’s score shall be determined by the aggregate of the finishing positions achieved by its 4 (four) best placed athletes. If two or more athletes tie for a place in any event, the attributable points shall be divided equally between them. The team in each event having the lowest score will be the winner, and so on. In case of a tie it shall be decided in favour of the team whose last scoring athlete finishes nearest to first place. A team with fewer than 4 (four) finishing athletes shall not be counted in the teams classification. A separate classification of all athletes in each event shall be compiled and the championship determined accordingly.
