I am very happy that Budapest will
host the 2012 SPAR European Cross
Country Championships. The Hungarian Athletics Association, supported
by the Hungarian Open Air Museum
(Skanzen), has presented an excellent
and exciting proposal to European
Athletics for an innovative course to be
created and we are looking forward
to a memorable 19th edition of the
championships.
It will be the first time Hungary will
have hosted the SPAR European Cross Country
Championships and I am confident that the local
organising committee are doing their utmost to ensure a successful event takes place in the town of
Szentendre in December 2012.
Athletics is a popular sport in Hungary with the
country boasting some excellent athletes and we
hope this translates to a well-received event
among fans of our sport.
The discipline of cross country is growing to be an
ever more important part of athletics during the winter months. Cross country brings together athletes

from the middle distances up to the
marathon in the same race and provides a special challenge as the running
surface can change according to the
weather conditions.
The SPAR European Cross Country
Championships are always an exciting and interesting competition, with
the added dimension of also being a
team event. The combination of the
beautiful local environment in Szentendre and the obstacles on the course
will provide a memorable experience for athletes,
officials and fans alike.
I would like to thank in advance the Hungarian
athletics federation, the Budapest 2012 local organising committee and the Hungarian Open
Air Museum for their hard work now and in the
future with regards to the organisation of the
championships.
I hope that Budapest 2012 continues the success story
of the SPAR European Cross Country Championships
and I look forward to meeting Europe’s cross country
family in December 2012 in Hungary.

WELCOME MESSAGE
Just a few months following the London Summer Olympic Games, in December 2012 a new challenge awaits
the very best distance runners of Europe as they stand up
to each other to decide the fate of medals and places
in what is one of the most picturesque cross country courses in Hungary.
Over recent years the Hungarian Athletics Association
has made great strides to return to the map of European Athletics. We signalled our intent to do so by being
the second member federation to host the European
Convention in the fall of 2009, and welcomed back the
European Athletics Family the very next summer for the
European Team Championships 1st League in Budapest. The next step in our quest is when we play host
to the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in
a nature conservation area. The Natural Outdoor Museum, more commonly referred to as „Skazen” established in 1967 is a fitting venue for the event. The unique
blend of sport, culture and national heritage promises an
unprecedented experience for the participants and we
can only hope that a traditional setting, which is also
prepared to accommodate for 21st centruy needs, will
aid the performance of the athletes as well as guarantee
the utmost comfort of our guests.
Being a traditionally successful throwing nation at
international level, cross country running represents a new
angle in which we regard athletics
in Hungary. Originating from a Health
and Fitness project sponsored by
the European Commission, there is
now a six-week long competition
series scattered all over the country
which draws the interest of thousands of youngsters wanting to run
in a natural environment. The SPAR
European Cross Country Championships will be the culmination of
this series and the first time in the life of many to witness
such a high level of international competition.
Dear athletes and coaches!
At the end of what was certainly a great outdoor season in 2012, with athletics having taken a historical step
and introducing the first ever European Championships
in an Olympic year, we will be waiting to welcome you
in December to a demanding course within a setting
which gives account of not only the architecture, the
lifestyle and the heritage but also the history of our country. We wish that all the dreams you may have come
true in Hungary!.
See you in Budapest!
Dear Competitiors, Visitors, Guests,
I am happy to welcome you in the Skanzen of Szentendre, the largest open air ethnographical collection of
Hungary. This is the first time that our museum provides a
venue for such a prestigious international sports competition. We are proud that the Hungarian Athletics
Association and the European Athletics have found this
venue suitable for organizing the 19th European Cross
Country Championships.
The museum presents the vernacular architecture of
Hungary’s most characteristic regions, the way of life
and habits of people who lived there from the second
half of the 18th century to the middle of the 20th century.
People can visit almost 300 buildings including churches,
barns, houses, stables, pigsties, mills, etc. – in the area of
about 60 hectares. Runners will often pass near barns or
press houses during the competition. When the museum
was founded in 1967, the main aspect was that the area
should the topography of the country reflect in the best
possible way - flats, hills, mountains, slopes - and now
these are the very conditions that allow the museum to
organize a cross country championship. At the same time, vernacular culture itself is not far from this
sport, either, because one or two
hundred years ago - in the absence of built roads and means of
transport - village people walked in
the natural, untouched environment, accommodating to the
challenges of the varied topography.
The museum is a nature reserve – it is tranquil with
clean air and beautiful views.
I do wish a successful and memorable SPAR European
Cross Country Championships to each and every participant in this wonderful natural environment!

BUDAPEST - SZENTENDRE
Budapest
Often described as the “Little Paris of Middle Europe”, Budapest is famous not only for the monuments reflecting its
own 1,000-year-old culture, but also for the relics of others
who settled here. Remains from both Roman occupation
and much later ruled by the Turks can still be seen in the
city. After the Ottoman Empire the union with Austria has
a particular influence on the city’s form and style.
The capital has two sides, Buda and Pest, stretching along
the banks of the Danube, representing two different
characters of the city.
Suburban Buda and its historic castle district offer medieval
streets and houses, museums, caves and Roman ruins.
The dynamic Pest side boasts the largest parliament
building in Europe, riverside promenades, flea markets,
bookstores, antique stores and café houses.
Budapest has a lot to offer. Museums and galleries, churches and synagogues, palaces and historic buildings,
baths and pools are presented together with the influence
of Secession in the city.
There is an unmistakable feeling that something out of
the ordinary is just around the corner, but what it will be is
up to you to find out…
Budapest
Szentendre
In Szentendre, a town of just 25 000 inhabitants located a
mere 5km north of the border of Budapest, you’ll experience
a Mediterranean atmosphere that few other Hungarian
settlements can offer you. No wonder that lots of artists
come to find inspiration and work here. Let this unique
aura enchant you too. Stroll down Görög utca form Main
Square lined with apartments of Greek families and you’ll
reach the peaceful promenade on the the Danube bank.
The crooked coble-stoned streets abound in shops offering all sorts of souvenirs, embroidered tablecloths and
shirts, pottery, wines, paprika, that you can take home to
your loved ones.
For Hungaricum (Hungarian food and beverage specialities pop in the Paprika Ház in downtown Szentendre
where you can buy Tokaji wine, pálinka (Hungarian fruit
brandy, Hungarian paprika powder, and goose liver.
Szentendre, being a very popular tourist destination, boasts
very good value restaurants and cafés that are on par
with Budapest’s restaurant scene.

THE INTRODUCTION OF SKANZEN
Skanzen – The Hungarian Open Air Museum
Situated in the Duna-Ipoly National Park, on more then one
hundred acres, the Hungarian Ethnographic Museum makes it
possible for the visitor to capture the authentic lifestyle and the
atmosphere of village life of the past two and a half centuries.
More then 300 different buildings: fully furnished relocated houses,
real scale farmyards, stables, press houses, cellars, barns, sties,
mills, churches – and last but not least gardens, meadows, fields
cultivated in a traditional way and arranged in original settlement patterns are waiting our guests.
If you would like to discover rural Hungary, in the Skanzen you will
find an enchanting landscape divided in 8 village-like regional
units, representing 8 different areas of the country: the Upland
Market Town – where the world famous Tokaji wine is from, the
Northern Hungarian Village – maybe the most interactive section
of the museum, the Upper-Tisza region, which was the very first element of the Museum’s history and where the wooden Belfry
(symbol of Skanzen) is located, The Great Hungarian Plain – maybe
the most known and typical part of the country, with its windmill
and functioning bakery, Southern Transdanubia, showing
among many other things the deployment of Swabians (ethnic
germans) after the 2nd World War, Bakony, Balaton Uplands
whit its working watermill and the Western Transdanubia region
with its relocated elementary school from 1826.
The Skanzen Railway
The 2.2 kilometers long normal track railroad is the longest
among the museum railways in Europe. The 80 years old, magnificently renovated train goes around the huge area of the
museum with a maximum speed of 15 km/h and can carry 80
passengers on board at the time. It has 6 stops which makes all
the regional units are easy to reach. The complete journey takes
about 30 minutes.
During the past 40 years the Hungarian Open Air Museum has
become one of the most successful museums of the country by
its exhibitions, infrastructure, programmes and professional and
scientific results.
