weights 1270 kg and uses a 156 volt battery made from 13
12v East Penn group 27 gel cells. The driver system is a
Solectria Acgu20 3-phase induction motor coupled to a
Solectria AC325 controller. Power is supplied via a
Solectria AT 1200 single speed reduction gear box.

Delta-Q Electrathon Races
June's EV of the month is a 2003 Segway model “I”, owned
by Byron Lawes, Vancouver BC. It weights 38kg and runs
on two 72 volt 60 cell Saft NiMH battery packs. The drive
system uses two 1.5 kw (2hp) Pacific Scientific Brushless
motors through a single speed, 2 stage 24:1 reduction gear
box.
Speed is 12.5 km/h with a range of 13-19 km.
Built by Segway LLC, Bedford, NH USA
There were the two Electrathon races held again this year.
In the morning the high schools raced with Gladstone

coming first in Wildthang. It is always impressive to see the
cars these 'kids' build. The cars race under a modified
electrathon race rules requiring three driver changes during
the race and with slightly different minimum weight limits.
In the afternoon the Delta-Q open class was run. This race
was open to anyone who wished to race and uses the
national electrathon race rules.

Many thanks to Dave Cloud for assisting again this year in
running the races and congratulations to his daughter who
drove Cloud Racing's car #40 to victory.

Winner of the Raffle Prize
The winner of the raffle prize,
a Meridia electric bicycle
donated by Christian of EV
Voltage was Aviv Keshet. He
is a member of the UBC
Electric Bike club so the prize
was quite apropos. You can
see this bike and others at
his store in New West beside
Cap's Bicycles.
Some comments from Walter
I would like to thank all the volunteers in VEVA who make
this race possible every year. Without the people who pitch
in, this event would not be possible. We also went to a new
level this year with the conference. This new event added
to the overall weekend in a very dramatic fashion. Well
done by all.
On the sponsor and exhibitor side, we need to recognize all
the corporate and member donations. First is Christian,
whose company EV Voltage donated the raffle prize of the
Merida bicycle. We need to get shoppers out to his store in
New Westminster. Then Delta-Q for donating the winner
prizes for the two electrathon races. I did notice them
bringing in a young lightweight driver to the afternoon
race in an almost successful bid to keep the charger, but
Shannon Cloud took the patience route and hung on to
take the charger home to Dad. Other sponsors such as
Ainsworth Electric and Dave Koehn, with their sponsorship
of the power set-up, Deka batteries with their cash
donation, St. John's Ambulance who come out to assist
and the Scouts who fed us, Dynasty who spent
considerable dollars to put a large number of vehicles in
front of us, as well as sponsoring the posters, Storm
Brewing for hosting our BBQ, and the list goes on. The City
of Vancouver was again very helpful in renting us the site.
Andrew of Yellow Cab spent a lot of his own time, and tied
up his Prius, explaining things to attendees.
On the member level, everyone pitched in. Russ for getting
things going, John and Alan for the variety of things all year
and the conference, Gordon for keeping all the emails and
website flowing, Robert for the bicycle area again, and the
many who pitched in Saturday to keep the course set-up
and the races going. For a bunch of volunteers and unpaid
professionals, we do very well. Though late starting and
rained on, the BBQ went well.
What have I added to the list for next year. At the strategic
level, we need to get some professional advertising done.
This may mean finding some radio and newspapers groups
that want to sponsor us with advertising. At the site level, I
would suggest we look at renting the extra lot by the Red
barn and putting all the bicycles and carts in there. I think
we still need to have the track, as the electrathon needs
that scale of track, and the cars can use it to demonstrate.
I will look at a cheaper method of moving the concrete than
the crane. Added to my checklists, which will be circulated
to all prior to the next REV, is the speaker system (nobody
listens to me otherwise), our own set of electrathon flags,
ordering the trophies, and establishing a menu.
Questions to the members. Do we want to do another
conference day on the Sunday? Do we hold off on the
conference until we get the demand from another group
such as EAA? Do we upgrade to a Michelin Bibendum day
like in the US, etc.
As always, suggestions are welcome, so lets start planning
for next year.

The local E Bike vendors were there in force. There is a
huge number of models to choose from. Here Janko is
showing off the Wavecrest E Bike.
Al Godfrey from Richmond always gets the double takes
with his immaculate Porsche 928 conversion. It is using a
Siemens A/C motor and controller.
Everyone retired to Storm Brewing after the show for a little
Suds and grub. Thanks again to James for the great
hospitality.

Some comments from the internet
From Don Crabtree aka Father Time
I agree, the show was
great. Jessica really
enjoyed
the
veggy
burgers.
I'm sorry the little green
three wheeler wouldn't
run, but somewhere
between 3:00 am and
arriving at the show it
lost it's mind. I think the rain got in. Maybe a golf tech
controller for wood burn.
The trip home was also interresting for us. We stopped in
Burlington,Wa.
for gas and noticed we had no running lights. The
headlights and emergency flashers still worked so we
headed for Burien. About 1 and ahalf hours later we got
home, the emergency flashers now welded on full time. It's
off to the repair shop to get the lights fixed for next weeks
family reunion in Crabtree, Oregon. I'm taking the " Blue
Dragon Fly" to give rides to all the cousins.
Father Time
I had a blast!
This wasd one of the best VEVA events of the last 5 or 6 I
have been to.
I made it home in one piece. I had a few "Spins" in the
Ranger towing Goldie. Side ways on the I-5 to 104 Exit
ramp is a great way to wake up.... No Damage... and I DID
make the 11:45 Boat to Kingston.
Wet,Tired, Sunburned and 7 minutes to make the last Boat
of the night...
is not a Safe way to drive.
I let John Wayland(aka Plasma Boy) fry the last of my old
burn out tires off of Goldie, We have photos and somebody
has Video. It was windy, but She made enough Smoke to
hide in STILL!. Those old Optimas are getting tired, but
they still can do a Damn Fine Smoke show.
I almost lost the front right Fender when the tire belts broke
loose at Redline. I lost some wiring and paint and some
bent stuff. But Hey The Fun of Wayland trying to break
Goldie... is priceless.
Comment of the Day ": Gezzz you aughta put Goldie's Half
Shafts in Gone Postal"...
Something to be said for Good STOCK half shafts...

reduced dramatically. You can have your cake and eat it
too – it only requires vision. I wish them good luck in this
years competition.
See: http://mae.ucdavis.edu/%7Efuturecar/FutureTruck/ for
more information on their project.
Walter Wardrup followed up with a great presentation on
the H2 Leader project and the plans to build the so called
hydrogen hiway.
Mountain Power presented their research (as much as they
would tell us) on LiIon battery systems. They showed a
vehicle capacity battery that fits inside an 8x12x16 (?) size
pelican case. This is currenlty being tested by Commercial
Body Builders in one of the IT cars.
At this point I had to leave and so missed the presentations
by Rail Power and Phll Dayson. Maybe some of the other
club members present can put some comments together
for a future newsletter.
Many of us met at the Spaghetti Factory in Gastown for a
wrapup dinner and great gab.

Douglas Hardwick of Harbour launch brought this beautiful
little electric runabout. He and his family use if for day
tripping and getting about up in Madeira Park.
EAA Conference
The conference was very well attended.
We had
representatives from all over North America and world
class presentations by several groups. Proffesors Andy
Franks presentation on the Future Truck and the research
they are doing on pluggable hybrids was very informative. I
took the core of his presentation to say that if done carefully
a plug in hybrid with a 60 mi battery only range can be build
and be cost efficient with a normal ICE version of the same
vehicle while at the same time the amount of polution is

4. I have decided to sell my "Electric Hare" (1982 VW
Rabbit). I have not used it for 3 years and my son in law
then used it to commute from Sorrento to Salmon Arm
(about 25k each way). However last summer the
batteries seemed to be losing their strength. I don't
want to buy new batteries for the little I use it. Also a tire
went flat and is no good now. It has low rolling
resistance Goodyear tires. At time of conversion the
"Hare" would go 80k between charges and would could
be driven at 75 to 80 k on the highway without drawing
too much juice from the batteries. It has 20 6V deep
cycle Trojan batteries plus a 12V accessory battery. 9
inch Advanced DC motor, PMC speed controller, on
board K&W 120V charger, on board 12V accessory
battery charger, 12V vacuum pump for the power
brakes, regenerative braking, and a electric meter to tell
you how many KW you use each charge. It seats the
driver plus one passenger as part oh the battery pack is
in the rear of the car. Part of the pack is under the hood.
In the 8 years I have had the car it has been free from
break downs except for 2 blown in line fuses and 1 flat
tire. The fuse problems were splashing water where it
shouldn't be and carelessness when cleaning the
battery connections. The car is red with lightning bolts
