Charles Rennie Mackintosh
1868–1928.
Architect. Artist. Designer. Icon.
The work of the Scottish architect, designer
and artist, Charles Rennie Mackintosh is today
celebrated internationally. Mackintosh was one
of the most sophisticated exponents of the
theory of the room as a work of art, and created
distinctive furniture of great formal elegance. In
Glasgow, you will see the finest examples of his
buildings and interiors and examples of his creative
collaborations with his wife, the accomplished
artist and designer Margaret Macdonald.

Welcome to the fifth
Mackintosh Festival
Glasgow Mackintosh is delighted to present another month-long
programme of over 40 arts and cultural events to celebrate the life
of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Glasgow’s most famous architect,
designer and artist.
This year we are celebrating
the 2016 Year of Innovation,
Architecture and Design and
in conjunction with Wireframe
Immersive, we have created
‘Mackintosh the Innovator’, an
immersive 3D experience that
allows visitors to design and
interact with a Mackintosh space.
The events will take place every
weekend during the festival in
St Enoch Centre.
We are delighted to have
added The Mackintosh Club in
Helensburgh as a new venue for
this year – a new Mackintosh
building for you to discover!
The Club will host talks and an
exhibition on the work of The Four.
While you are in Helensburgh,
don’t miss the Henry Taylor Wise
exhibition at The Hill House.
2016 is the 20th anniversary of
House for an Art Lover and there
are a whole host of events at the
House including: an Afternoon in
Song; Home to Home – a tour of
the House; Mackintosh Queen’s
Cross and The Hill House; a range
of art masterclasses and Free
House – where you can celebrate
their 20th birthday with kids
activities and tours of the house.
Mackintosh Queen’s Cross have
a varied programme of events
including: Avril Paton, their artist
in residence; the very popular
Lids Open Day; an exhibition of
architectural artwork; an evening
of piano and violin; a guitar recital;
talks on design and architecture
and a puppet show Gruff: a new
take on the classic tale of The Billy
Goats Gruff – great fun for all the
family!
We invite the citizens of Glasgow
to take part in The Big Rose Project
– and create a carpet of roses using
stencils led by Elisabeth Viguie
Culshaw held at: House for an Art
Lover; Mackintosh Queen’s Cross;
The Hill House; The Lighthouse
and in St Enoch Centre.
The Glasgow School of Art will
host their popular walks and tours;
talks on The Mack restoration and
an exhibition by photographer and
filmmaker Chris Leslie.
The Lighthouse will offer guided
tours; Design Tree; a bespoke
installation of Kathy Hinde’s
Luminous Birds and Mackintosh
Film Series.
You can enjoy tours of
The Mackintosh House at
The Hunterian and The Glasgow Art
Club, which is also hosting Aye Mac
– a Mackintosh-inspired exhibition
of work by contemporary artists in
Glasgow.
Kelvingrove; Glasgow Museums
Resource Centre and Scotland
Street School Museum have some
fantastic events for families and
young people, and our partners:
Glad Café; Glasgow Women’s
Library; and Willow Tea Rooms,
Buchanan Street will run events
and walks during the month.
The Big Mack Dinearound is
back and so is our Doors Open Day

The skyline of Glasgow has been radically
transformed as high rise tower blocks have
been blown down and bulldozed. Does this
Disappearing Glasgow herald a renaissance
in the city? Photographer and filmmaker
Chris Leslie is widely acknowledged as the
most consistent chronicler of the city’s recent
history. His exhibition and accompanying book,
edited by Johnny Rodger, documents an era of
spectacular change in film and still photography.
Cutting edge digital documentation techniques
have been employed by the Digital Design
Studio at the GSA to capture the Mackintosh
building post fire, to help illustrate the story of
the 2014 fire, and to assist the design teams
in planning for the return of this iconic building
to its former glory and provide a new creative
environment ready for the next generation of
artists, architects and designers to inhabit.
