Take It
To the Lake
Let yourself experience the
sounds and smells of the boreal.
When you're sitting by the campfire,
nothing beats the sound of a Loon echoing
over the water, or the splash of a fish as it leaps
from the still bay for a daily feed.
The best lakes in Alberta are nestled in the boreal forests
surrounding Bonnyville and Cold Lake. When visiting our
region you are never far away from the lakeshore.
Take It To The Lake for a relaxing weekend, or just an
afternoon. We have lots of stretches of sand to lay out the
beach towel. The quality of our beaches is unparalleled.
Kinosoo Beach on Cold Lake was named one of the top 25
beaches in Canada. Marie Lake and Moose Lake have sandy
shores that can easily compete.
You have plenty of choices for on-the-water entertainment.
Moose or Crane Lake are your first choices for wakeboarding
or tubing. Cold Lake is the top destination for Lake Trout
fishing. Walleye fishermen should head to Wolf Lake. Marie
Lake has everything you desire – pristine water, great beaches
and fine fishing.
With 16 campgrounds, and too many lakes to count, you can
spend your whole summer hanging out in the Bonnyville/Cold
Lake region.
Experience our best adventures or create your own:
• Watch jets perform their aerobatics
July 18-20 4 Wing Air Demonstration
• Taste mouthwatering pies at the
Rocky Meadows Country Get-Away café
• Smell the pines quadding the May Lake
or Iron Horse Trails
• Listen to the pounding hooves at
Bonnyville's WPCA Chuckwagon Races
• See the landscape from the air with
Lakeland Flight Services
• Sail Cold Lake's wide open waters
• Tromp through the woods for wild
blueberries and saskatoons
• Collect Cold Lake's five beach sands: garnet, white,
yellow, grey, and pebble
• Rent a sea-doo and take a unique lake trip
• View the works of world-renowned artist Alex Janvier in
his new gallery
See you at the beach or on the water!

Fishing Lore
Lake Trout – The end of June is prime Lake Trout season on
Cold Lake as the fish are near the surface and quite aggressive.
When fishing for Lake Trout in the spring, run your lure
shallow with a long lead of line. When active, Lake Trout
prefer flashy lures with lots of movement such as: wigglers,
Len Thompson series lures, white or chartreuse buck tail jigs
and Gang Troll riggings. In summer, Lake Trout go a little
deeper at 30 to 80 feet. Use the same hooks on down rigging
or salmon rigging equipment. Equipment you need for spring
and summer Lake Trout fishing includes: fish finder, stout
eight foot rods, level wind reels with up to 20 pound test and
clear leaders.
17
Burbot – Also known as Freshwater Cod or Ling, Burbot are
considered one of the tastiest catches around. Fondly referred
to as the “lobster of the north” by locals, Burbot's flavour is
comparable to the pricey crustacean when boiled in water and
dipped in garlic butter. Most lakes in the Bonnyville/Cold Lake
region are home to Burbot, however, Marie Lake and Cold
Lake have reputations for the Big Catch.
Northern Pike – The feisty Northern Pike is a staple
throughout northeast Alberta, especially tasty from Cold Lake
due to the cool water temperature.
Yellow Perch – The ideal game fish for beginners and
youngsters, Yellow Perch can be found throughout the region.
Moose Lake and Cold Lake are two of the better hotspots,
with Cold Lake often registering catches in the two pound
range.
Rainbow Trout – Little Bear Lake is the only water body in the
region that is stocked annually with Rainbow Trout. Many of
the stocked fish survive the winter and over the past two years
anglers have been regularly catching four to six pound
specimens.
Walleye – Perhaps the most sought after sport fish in Alberta,
Walleye stocks vary from lake to lake within the region. Marie
Lake has long been regarded as the best bet for hooking a
good sized Walleye.
Lake Whitefish – This deep water sport fish is the mainstay of
the winter sport fishery in the region.

Cold Lake Museums
The Cold Lake Museums site is designated
as a historic resource by the province,
as the site was once a Cold War-era radar station.
The Canadian Forces utilize one of the buildings of the radar
facility to house the Cold Lake Air Force Museum. This museum
is the first visitors see on arrival to the facility. The Cold Lake
Air Force Museum depicts the history of 4 Wing from 1952 to
present, including all the squadrons. Displays include a lifesize F-18 decoy, a Forward Looking Infrared Pod (FLIR), an F-5
flight simulator, historical jet aircraft, military vehicles and
numerous indoor displays.
Aboriginal, Heritage and Oil & Gas museums occupy three of
the remaining buildings on site.
Discover the unique technology developed specifically for the

created by the Grand Centre High School students and won an
award with the Canadian Museums Association and the
Natural History Museum for a three-fold partnership of school,

Downtown
Bonnyville
Bonnyville's downtown is
expanding onto the side streets
parallel to the main
thoroughfare. Now, not only is
main street dominated by
independent shops and tasty
restaurants, the business district
is growing its offerings to make
shopping even more enjoyable.
Bonnyville offers a good
selection of everything from
trendy clothing, sporting goods,
antiques, jewelry, unique gifts
and crafting material. Take a short break from shopping to try a
bite of the exceptionally fine food served at any one of the
diverse eateries. Each restaurant has their specialty, so be sure to
ask what's best on the menu.
You can enhance your lake vacation experience with a
visit to Sylvestre Source For Sports. Their shelves are full
of fishing tackle, bait, hunting gear, camping equipment, water
sport apparatus, beach wear, sandals and sunglasses. Or, when
you're tired of the beach, try a different relaxation method and
get a new look at one of the many salons and spas located
throughout downtown.
38
There are flower and gift stores galore,
each one offering different wares.
Some even do double duty, offering a
complete selection of women's clothing
to boost the shopping experience.
When you're all shopped out and have
eaten your fill, take a tour of the Jessie
Lake Trail to enjoy the variety of trees
and bird life.

Cold Lake Lakeshore
The first view of the Cold Lake Marina always takes your breath
away. Take a walk along the breakwater and you might catch a
glimpse of the “big fish” – the “Legend of the Kinosoo” that the
Dene Suline believe lurks in the depths of the lake.
The Cold Lake Marina offers daily, weekly and monthly berth
rentals from May 1 to September 30. Call 780-639-3316 to book
your berth. There is fuel, a pump out system, sail boat lifting
mast and a fish cleaning station available for boaters. Fishing is
allowed on the outside of the breakwater.
Take an ice cream break after your jaunt along the lakeshore or
stop for a bite to eat at any of the restaurants. Fishermen can
bring their catch into Clark’s General Store and Eatery and they’ll
whip up their unique recipe – just give them advance notice. One
block from the lakeshore is Marina Mall where you can stock up
on all the necessities.
The outdoor enthusiast can check out Lakeside Marine & Off
Road for boat, quad and sled accessories, parts and repairs. They
sell Lake Trout fishing tackle, bait, tubes, ropes and outboard
engines.
Further down the lakeshore you’ll find Kinosoo Beach, a three
block stretch of fine sand named one of the
top 25 beaches in Canada.
Beach volleyball courts,
children’s playground,
ice cream stand and
the occasional live
performance help
break up the long
summer day.
42
Downtown Cold Lake
It’s easy to go on a shopping spree in
downtown Cold Lake. There is an accessory store
that features one-of-a-kind items, plus stylish clothes for men
and women. The children’s clothing store next door has all the
top brands, along with maternity wear for mom. An expansive
shoe store is just down the street, along with the best lingerie
boutique in Alberta.
If the clothes closets are full, you can add to your home décor
from the shops across the street,
although taking home just one
treasure will be hard.
Just off the main drag is
Hamel’s Meats, which has a unique
claim to fame. Their beef jerky
is a “must try item”, as it was taken
into space by one of our Canadian
astronauts.
Don’t forget to stop for lunch or supper at one of the great
restaurants that are scattered throughout the downtown streets.

L’Alberta francophone

Birds of the Boreal
Over 292 species of birds can be found in the Bonnyville/Cold
Lake region, which is within the transition zone between
Alberta’s aspen parkland and the northern boreal forest.
Jessie Lake, in the Town of Bonnyville, is a shallow wetland home
for many species of waterfowl. Here, from viewing platforms and
a walking path around the lake, you can see nesting populations
of our most beautiful shorebird, the American Avocet, and watch
the undulating flight of a hunting Short-Eared Owl. To the west,
Moose Lake Provincial Park, Franchere Bay and Pelican Point
recreational areas offer excellent boreal forest, lake and wetland
habitats. At Muriel Lake, several of the low islands and parts of
the shoreline provide restricted access protection to one of
Alberta's largest breeding populations of the endangered Piping
Plovers as well as to several large colonies of Gulls, Terns and
Cormorants.
52
Ethel Lake has become home to one
of Alberta’s most reliable count
areas for the provincially
uncommon Yellow Rail and Sedge
Wren.
At Wolf Lake you’ll encounter
majestic Pelicans and Blue Herons,
the ever present Loon and you can
create your own humming bird
haven.
Cold Lake is the key entry point for
neo-tropical migratory birds such as
Wood Warblers. In late May and
early June, Cold Lake Provincial Park
is the destination for birders who
wish to experience a wild weekend
of warbler watching with a
potential of 23 warbler species to
be observed. These include the
Connecticut and Mourning Warblers. The fall migration through
late July and August draws a repeat crowd. Couple this rare
attraction with a host of waterfowl species, including one of
Alberta’s largest Western Grebe colonies, and a spill-over
population of Pelicans, Cormorants and Gull species, and you
have a birding paradise.
The occasional
Turkey Vulture can also
be found along the
lakeshore.

ATV Riding
The 300 km multi-use Iron Horse Trail connects many of the
area’s natural gems and tourist attractions. The Beaver River
Trestle, just outside of Cold Lake, was damaged in a fire, and as a
result, access to and from Cold Lake is not possible until further
notice. Riders can use the Iron Horse Trail to access countless
kilometres of backcountry trails and cutlines that weave through
the region’s more rugged terrain. Riders looking to explore the
entire Cold Lake/Bonnyville area can hook up with the Iron Horse
Trail at a variety of entry points. The Iron Horse Trail branches in
three directions from mile zero at Abilene Junction. To the
northeast is Bonnyville, to the west is Smoky Lake and
Waskatenau, and to the southeast lies St. Paul, Elk Point and
Heinsburg.
There are designated ATV trails at Muriel Lake’s Spring Beach
Campground and Shelter Bay Resort on
Marie Lake. Well-used trails are also
located north of Crane Lake and
the May Lake Trail is northwest
of Cold Lake. Cutline trails can be
found around Wolf Lake.
