

Elad FDM-S2 with Studio 1 software
Afedri SDR-NET with SDR-Console v2.3b
2 x Asus X35E Laptops with Intel i5 processors and 6 TB of hard drives
Etón E1 with Sony IC-recorder
Preamplifiers from Advanced Receiver Research.
Antennas:
 Aihkiniemi antenna farm with 13 pcs. 900-1000 meter beverages in a variety of directions.
Day 1, November 29:
Started very early from Vardø. Already at 04:30 UTC and arrived in Aihkiniemi at 09:59 UTC.
Pretty perfect! Roads were quite good, but on the norwegian side, especially close to the sea, the
roads (E75 and E6) was somewhat slippry. Made a quick stop in Näätämö to buy some food, toilet
paper (extremely important in AIH) and beer (also very important). Met JM and JHT in the AIH41
crew, who had arranged some coffee, which was perfect after the drive from Vardø. Nice to meet
fellow hobbyists for the first time. We exchanged some DX-info and JHT showed on the map which
antennas that was most important to check during my stay in AIH.
After loading the cabin with all the stuff that I had carried from Vardø, I immedeately started to set
up my gear. Due to a brainfart I managed to blow one of my preamplifiers from Advanced Receiver
Research, the one intended for the Afedri receiver. Pretty typical, huh? However, I borrowed one of
the low noise preamps already stored in the cabin (and did put it back on it's place when finished).
After a while I had both SDR's set up and running without any trouble. The first afternoon in AIH is
always a bit "try and error". In addition to that, the two high-pass filters from Mini Cirkuits found
stored in the cabin, helps a lot fighting the Norwegian Loran C transmitter. I actually ordered such a
filter for myself, immedeately when I got back home, because it helps against a lot more than just
the Loran C.
Running Afedri/SDRConsol (left), Elad FDM-S2/Studio1 (right)
Pretty good conditions towards the eastern hemisphere when I started to listen around 13:00 UTC.
4QD Emerald on 1548 kHz was booming for a few minutes, but suddenly dissappeared. Later in the
afternoon a nice mixture of Japanese and Chinese stations was noticed. Haven't listened to any of
those files yet, but I guess it will be a lot of fun!
Day 2, November 30:
A great day for DXing North America and Far East, with steady and strong TA-signals present until
long after noon! The east coast, midwest and area around the Big Lakes was dominating, and it will
indeed be a thrill to examinate all the IQ-recordings that was made! Not so much from the west
coast, and only a few signals from Alaska. There was a lot of activity on the graveyard frequencies
and I will love to dig these recordings even more, now when I'm back home. A lot of nice and
strong signals from Japan during the afternoon, among these a very exciting station on 1431 kHz,
which I beleive is either Gifu Hoso or Wakayama Hoso. Will check my recording later on.
However, I managed to miss the NHK2 signoff this afternoon. For some reason they signed off at
15:20 UTC, and not 15:40 as usual. Maybe they have started to sign off earlier on sundays?
Plenty of signals from Far East during the afternoon. JOUB NHK2 Akita on 774 among the stronger ones.
(Elad FDM-S2/Studio1)
Besides radio, another kind of entertainment is taking place right outside the window of the cabin; a
very persistant squirrel is putting a lot of effort in trying to steal the birdseed and nuts that has been
put out to feed the birds living in the forest during the winter. I have never seen such a stubborn
squirrel - it's a very innovative and extremely athletic little fellow, who never gives up. Very funny!
Later in the evening, the K-index raised to 3 and conditions went auroral. Spent the rest of the
evening hunting spanish stations, and found quite a few. Interesting NA-loggings from this day so
far: KTRS-MO 550, WOKY-WI 920, WKAJ-NY 1120, WORC-MA 1310, WDLR-OH 1550,
WAUB-NY 1590 and WAOS-GA 1600 to mention a few.
Day 3, December 1:
Went to bed at 00:30 UTC. A-index had raised to 8, K-index to 3 and Mrs. Aurora was present.
After some reading I slept for six long hours, and was woken up by a text message from OJS, who
asked about the overnight conditions in AIH. He had been listening over the remote receivers in
Kongsfjord and he told that not much had been received up there. Situation was just about the same
in Aihkiniemi. Well, the band was not quiet, but offered a mixture of unstable signals from
Venezuela, Colombia, the Carribbean area, Puerto Rico and a few of the most common East
Coast NA's. I took a few IQ recordings while receiving on the 270and 290-degree antennas, and I guess that I will find one or two good
ones when examining these files.
What to do on a day like this with no, or in the best case, very poor
signals from NA and Far East? Well, hunting stations in the UK
during the day and Spain in the evening, of course! Besides that,
checking one or two of the antennas, feeding the birds and squirrels
are also good activities during the very few hours of useable daylight.
The afternoon hours didn't offer any signals at all from Japan or the
Far East. However, Myanmar Radio was present on 576 kHz in
parallell with 5985,25 kHz in the 49 meter band. During the late
afternoon and evening, the listening was focused on Iberia. A couple
of quite nice ones found their way into the log.
Day 4, December 2:
Again, an "early" night, as yours truly went to bed at 00:45 UTC after examining a couple of
recordings of Iberia stations. K-index went up to a horrible 4, and Mrs. Aurora paid yet a visit. Not
much to tell about the morning, which was a total disaster - condition wise. After a quick bandcheck
at 05:00 UTC, I opted for the bed again in order to charge energy for better periods. After waking
up at 08:00, I had a long breakfast and then went to Inari to buy some more food and other stuff at
the Kuukkeli convenient store. When I got back again at 12:00 UTC I found the band still in poor
shape. KFBX-970 and KBRW-680 was the only AK-stations present, and the only audiable
japanese station was JOLF-1242. However switching to the 80 degree antenna offered some pretty
good signals from China and Thailand. It remains to see if I managed to catch some goodies.
Perhaps there is one or two philippine stations present, as well. Heavy snowfall during the late
afternoon, and mild temperatures. I then knew what to do the next day: Snow shuffeling! The
evening offered yet a nice smorgasboard of SER, COPE and OCR-stations, and the local breaks
usually produced at least one new station each time.
Day 5, December 3:
Some improvement compared to the day before.
During the morning hours a bit of a frustrating
mixture of South America, The Carribbean area
and North America. Somewhat distorted and
unstable signals over 1000 kHz, but a bit better
below, though. Did some snow-shuffeling and
checked the 95 degree-antenna during the day,
and also fed all birds and squirrels on site.
Discovered some more company; a very curious
fox! Finished off the day with examining a few
IQ-recordings, and found WDRC Hartford NJ1360, HIAH Radio VEN, Sto. Domingo-1200,
Concentida 890 and some more carribbean stuff.
Day 6, December 4:
Crappy conditions again to North America. Almost no TA-signals at all. Monitored 792 kHz and got
BBC Radio Foyle with ID and own programming, which was a first-time-ever for me (in 30 years!).
Some more snow-shuffeling after the snowfall yesterday evening and when finished, it immedeately
started to snow again... Also checked the 160 degree antenna, which was kind of a workout in pretty
deep snow.
Aaah! Finished snow-shuffeling at the parking lot.
It didn't last long, however...
Found some more fox-tracks around my "take-a-leak-tree". Someone's been there sniffing... and
thinking... "Hmm... lemmesee now... a male specimen, middle age.... no fur... at least not much..."
Examined a couple of files from December 3, but didn't find much more than the most common east
coast stations. Agreed with Jari Sinisalo, that I could stay one night longer, since the conditions
had been pretty lousy during most of my stay so far. Afterwords, this turned out to be a very good
idea.
Day 7, December 5:
Improvement towards NA in the morning, but still unstable signals and stations popping up and
dissappearing just as quick. Conditions actually reminded me about sporadic-E on FM. One minute
the band is full of activity, next minute absolutely quiet and after a while plenty of TA-signals again.
Very pequliar, indeed! Signals on the 305-degree antenna still dominating and not much was heard
after 08:30 UTC. Went to Inari to do some last shopping. Haven't yet examined my recordings from
this morning and I guess there are one or two surprises to find!
Day 8, December 6:
Interesting conditions in the morning hours; first a mix of Colombia, East coast and midwest NA
until around 08:00 UTC when propagation suddenly turned due west and several stations in Alaska
came in with booming strength. Around 09:30 UTC stations in Hawaii became audiable. KKNE
Waipahu on 940 kHz was at local strength for long periods and this mix of Alaska/Hawaii continued
until around 12:30. Usual opening to Asia between 12:30-13:00. Both KBRW-AK 680 and KKNEHI 940 was still audiable long after 13:00 UTC. NHK2 with c/d at normal time (15:40) today, and
JOQC-1386 was a good signal, but I already got that one verified. Did listen on my recordings from
the HI-opening from the morning and forenoon hours, and found quite a number of audiable
stations. Around 20:00 UTC visible aurora, but not so strong (it should, however, get worse!)
The arctic nights are beautyful, but if you're planning to take pictures of it,
don't forget the camera tripod!
Day 9, December 7:
A-index 13 and K-index 5, i.e. minor storm. Glad I managed to sleep through most of this
atmospheric mayhem! Started packing early while receiving and recording on the 325 and 305
degree antennas. Quite a lot of signals from North America, surprislingly enough. Files are just
partly examined, but a few good ones were lurking in the noise! Noticed some 15-20dB noise on the
30-degree antenna, but didn't have time to investigate this any further. Probably a balun-problem or
maybe rodants has been chewing the coax. The wire is not cut, since there also is true signal from
the antenna, and plenty of it too. Left Aihkiniemi at 11:00 local time and started my 5 hour trip up
to Vardø on icy norwegian roads... Will be back again next year for sure! Temperatures was pretty
sympathic during the whole week. Quite steady around -5/-6 C, with 0 C as highest and -12 C as
bottom low.
This was my second DXpedition to Aihkiniemi, as I also conducted the AIH-22 expedition in late
November 2012. This one was quite different from 2012, where prairie- and west coast stations
were very much dominating. The solar conditions was very much different this year, and conditions
very unpredictable at site. A lot of North America was heard also during this expedition, mostly
from the east coast and area around the big lakes. I will have a quite of a job with examining all the
IQ-files, and I will probably never be totally finished with that. From time to time, I'm still listening
to the files from AIH-22, and I keep finding new stations all the time! The Aihkiniemi DXperience
keeps living forever, it seems! To summarize the AIH-42 week with a one-sentence final
conclusion: There's always something interesting to hear in Aihkiniemi, no matter the conditions!
