THE EDIFIER
THE EDIFIER “Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and the things wherewith one may edify another” (Rom. 14:19). Walnut Street Church of Christ FAMILY MATTERS…Steve Baggett Volume 45 July 12, 2015 Number 28 INVOLVING YOU…Larry Snow Among the most powerful images one can view are those archived videos in Nazi Germany from before World War II. In them one sees crowded stadiums with right arms extended to the cries in unison of “Sieg Heil” (hail victory). Adopted by the Nazi Party in the 1930’s, the infamous ‘sieg heil’ would come to stand for the tyranny of that regime. It was the mandatory salute for all German citizens as a demonstration of loyalty to the Fuhrer, his party, and his nation. Those images still remind us of the horror that was to come. Family Bible School at Walnut Street July 19-22 (7-8:30 PM) Join us each night for skits, Bible classes, games, crafts, refreshments and fellowship! 6th-12th graders are invited to a nightly “Mystery Devo”! It showed the large crowd, arms extended, except for one lone German who refused to give Hitler the Nazi salute. On June 13, 1936, a photographer captured the image of August Landmesser refusing to raise a stiff right arm in Hitler’s presence. At first glance the picture looks normal. But on a closer examination, August Landmesser stands motionless in the crowd with his arms crossed across his chest. The story behind the picture is that several years earlier, Landmesser had fallen in love with Irma Eckler, a Jewish woman, and proposed marriage. After his engagement to a Jewish woman was discovered he was expelled from the Nazi Party. They tried to obtain a marriage license in Hamburg. The union was denied by the newly enacted Nuremberg laws. It was then that Landmesser gave his now famous cross-armed stance during Hitler’s christening of a new German navy vessel. His act of defiance stands out amid the throng of Nazi salutes we have all seen. Landmesser’s action that day and those subsequent would land both him and Eckler in separate concentration camps. They would never see each other again. The courage to stand for what is right often comes at a great cost. It’s in moments like these that one’s true character is exposed. Here we are almost 80 years later finding courage in a picture that Landmesser didn’t even know was being taken. If our ‘pictures’ were being taken today, what message would they send?
