Happy New Year from
Lake Fork everyone!
It’s the start of a great
year here at the big bass
capital of the world.
I’m excited about all
the great fishing ahead
and the numerous great
events scheduled for
this year. It is going to
be an excellent year so start
getting your fishing gear ready
now.
The lake is in great condition
to begin the season. We had a
real nice rain a couple of weeks
ago that proved all the ponds
and ground are full of water because it all ran straight off into
the lake bringing the lake up
almost a foot. We are currently
sitting at about 4 ¾ feet low.
As we continue to get more
rain this spring it shouldn’t take
much to bring the lake up to
pool level or close to. We also
have lots of new grass continuing to grow throughout the lake
which is exciting. Water temperatures have been typical for
wintertime conditions at 50-54
degrees. The lake is fairly clear
to 3 feet in most areas on the
main lake with stained water in
the back of some of the main
feeder creeks from recent rains.
The bass fishing on Lake
Fork in January is a lot better
than most people would expect.
I have had some real good days
in the month of January. You
typically will not catch a lot of
fish but the fish you do catch are
big. So if you don’t mind the
cold and quality over quantity
then you will want to get out
for some early prespawn fishing before the spring crowds
start hitting the lake.
My fishing arsenal consists
of shallow to mid-depth baits
and presentations when targeting big Lake Fork prespawn
female bass. A lot of these bass
will be staging in the creek
channels or on main lake points
and secondary points leading
into the major spawning areas.
I use a Talon 3/8 or 1/2 oz flipping jig in black/blue or black/
brown/amber with a matching
color Berkley Chigger Craw or
Berkley Havoc Pit Chunk trailer to work the timber in these
areas. Most of the fish will be
staging in 10-14 feet but you
may find they are a little deeper on cold or cloudy days and
shallower on warm sunny days.
This is my top bait and combi-
nation for catching the biggest
bass in January.
I will also use an assortment of moving baits to work
the shallows for a reaction bite.
When I head to the shallows I
usually focus on any grass I can
find in 2-6 feet. The big girls
like the grass and since a lot of
it dies in the winter, if you find
any green stuff they will usually be stacked in it. My go to
is definitely the lipless crank
bait in ¼ - ¾ oz sizes depending on how deep the grass is.
Best colors are red/orange,
chrome/blue, and gold. I use a
rip and burn retrieve over the
submerged grass to create a
reaction bite. It’s a lot of casting and winding. You will want
to have the right rod and reel
combo for this kind of fishing
or it will wear your arms out. I
am using the new Abu Garcia
Revo Rocket with a 9:1 gear
ratio and a 7’3” medium heavy
Abu Garcia Veritas rod. I also
use 17-20 lb Trilene fluorocarbon line. This is the perfect
combination! I also like to use
suspending jerk bait over the
grass. Especially on blue bird,
sunny and calm days. Twitching these over the grass slowly
can draw some huge bites under the right conditions. My favorite colors are clown, orange/
gold, and pro blue. The fish
have also been active on spinner baits, especially on windy
days. I use a Talon Shibui 3/8
or 1/2 oz white and chartreuse
color as well as a plain white.
www.talonlures.com The shallow bite is best in the afternoon
and can really turn on between
2pm and 5pm so don’t let a
slow morning deter you from
fishing all day. Things can happen fast on a warming day so
hang in there!
The deep fishing is slower
for me this time of year and I
concentrate most of my efforts in the shallows. I know
the fish are still out there in
the deep water this time of
year but finding “active feeding” fish is a different story. I
am generally catching smaller
male bass deeper and big fish
shallow in January. I always
check on spots with my Lowrance HDS Gen 2 Touch while
I’m running from spot to spot
though. You never know when
you might pull up on an active school of big ones feeding.
Most of the fish are holding in
22-28 feet right now. My favorite technique to use on these
deep schools is a drop shot rig
or a jig head with a grub and a

seem to be a lot more lethargic
than the shallower fish they will
still take off with your bait. Another great choice is to drop a
jigging spoon down on them. I

The perfect deer hunt
Luke Clayton
Occasionally, I have a few days
to hunt alone. Being a pretty sociable guy, I thoroughly enjoy
spending time hunting and fishing with friends that share my
love of the outdoors but, sometimes it’s rewarding to be alone;
alone and completely self dependent. Alone in the sense that
if you don’t do it, it just doesn’t
get done! As an outdoors writer,
I spend a lot of my outdoor time
on story assignments. Granted,
it’s still hunting and fishing but
there is always an agenda; an article for a magazine or newspapers or possibly a field test of a
new product.
This past week I found myself, the first time in a long time,
completely caught up with my
writing and recording for my radio shows. With a whole week
of “off time”, I decided to spend
time hunting deer in the little
patch of woods I have leased
near my home. A ten minute
ride from home in my Intimidator electric ATV puts me in the
deer and hog woods.
I’ve been on this little lease
for eleven years now and have
never loosed an arrow at a deer.
I usually have the opportunity
to harvest deer on several of the
ranches I work with on story assignments and have always left
the deer hunting here for family members. I did walk up on
a buck that was later harvested
and scored 172 BC though.
Bowhunting is my passion and
on this occasion, I was toting
a .270 rifle in quest of a wild
hog for the smoker. As I eased
through some heavy brush into
the edge of a little clearing back
in the woods, I noted movement off to my right in some
heavy cover. I saw the glint of
sunlight on antler and instinc-
East Fork
tively flipped the safety off the
.270 and picked a little opening in front of the buck. The
monster 10 pointer stepped into
the opening and I centered the
crosshairs on his shoulder. The
range was a mere 55 yards and
it would have been a chip shot
but I hesitated a few seconds
and the bruiser buck vanished,
as they have a way of doing.
I was thinking that even a
buck this big would not have
been a trophy to me, not killed
with a rifle. I must admit that I
had afterthoughts on the matter
and at times wished that I had
pulled the trigger. But opportunities such as this are fleeting and one must seize the moment when hunting mature deer.
How do I know the buck scored
172 BC? The fellow down the
slough killed him the next week
and invited me to come over
and admire the buck’s antlers. It

was the same 10 point that has
become firmly engrained into
my memory banks. But, I never
mentioned to him that I’d seen
the bruiser buck. No need to
take away from his excitement
of having harvested the biggest
buck of his life.
One Tuesday morning found
me in my favorite ladder stand
overlooking some heavy cover,
the kind of cover that late season bucks like to travel. I spent
ten minutes enjoying the day
coming to life. A serenade from
a hunting pack of coyotes broke
the quietness and then the symphony of birds and chattering
squirrels joined in. High overhead, I head a flock of Canada geese making that ancient
chatter they do in flight. A red
tailed hawk flew over at treetop
level and sounded that piercing scream intended to frighten
prey on the ground and in the
trees into flight. And then, with
absolutely no warning of his approach, appeared a fine 8 point
buck. I appraised him quickly
and ascertained he as a 3 year

old. His rack would win no big
buck contests but he was big of
body and had some age on him.
A typical 8 pointer before the
rut, he now sported 7 points.
He’d broken one in a recent
fight over breeding rights. What
occurred in the next fifteen or
twenty seconds remains a blur
in my mind. I am convinced that
a hunter, especially someone
hunting with a bow, tunes out
everything during the fleeting
seconds leading up to releasing
an arrow at game.
I found my Darton 3800
compound bow had somehow
come to full draw and the moment when the buck stopped
at 19 yards and glanced back
over his shoulder at his back
trail, as bucks often do, my 20
yard pin had settled on a spot
just behind the buck’s shoulder.
Some unknown force squeezed
the release and the next thing
I remember was hearing that
“Ker-thunk” sound that denotes
a solid hit; my arrow sticking
in the ground on the offside of
where the buck had been standing. In my subconscious, his departure and the sound of him go-
ing down was recorded. I found
the buck 48 yards from where
he was standing, a short trailing
job indeed! A broad head such
as the 3-bladed Innerlock EXP
mechanical I shoot is every bit
as lethal as the best designed
rifle bullet.
As mentioned, my buck was
packing plenty of prime venison. He would be a handful to
drag. After a quick field dressing job, I ascertained the easiest
way to get the heavy buck out
and on to the skinning rack we
have constructed a few hundred
yards to the north. I remembered
a little clearing about 80 yards
away. I could back my electric
buggy into the spot and get him
out without too much effort. I

was in no hurry on this hunt.
The weather was cold and there
was no rush getting the meat on
ice. I took my time skinning and
quartering the animal and back
at the house, allowed the meat
to chill a couple days before I
began cutting the prime venison
into steaks, ground meat and
roasts.
The butchering and later cooking of game is almost as enjoyable to me as the hunt and I did
not rush the task. Some of the
steaks, I cut for chicken frying,
about a half inch thick. I tenderized each steak and then sealed
them in vacuum freezer bags. I
cut some of the backstrap steaks
an inch thick. These, I tenderized and seasoned well with

hickory coals.
The processing of this buck
was actually several weeks in
the planning. I had enough German salami seasoning to make
25 one pound casings of sausage. The front shoulders and
trimmings from cutting steaks
made about 15 pounds of lean,
ground venison. The venison, mixed with 10 pounds of
ground pork, was soon stuffed
into the casings, allowed to cure
overnight and then placed in my
Smokin Tex electric smoker set
at 140 degrees. Cured meat can
be slow smoked at low temperatures. If subjected to high
temperatures, I would have had
cooked ground meat, not salami.
After a total of 14 hours of low
heat, I had created some great
tasting home made salami. The
target temperature for smoked
sausages is 152 degrees and it
takes many hours of low heat to
get it there. I had the smoker set
at 175 degrees for the last couple hours.
Just yesterday, I make chopped
BBQ from the neck roast. Many
hunters are not aware that the
neck roast is one of the better
cuts of venison but, it has to
be slow cooked in moisture. I
began by placing the seasoned
neck roast in an open foil pan
and allowing it to smoke for a
couple hours. Next, I placed a
liberal amount of KW’s BBQ
sauce on the roast, placed a few
bay leaves on top and covered
the meat with bacon. A tight
wrap of heavy duty foil and into
the smoker for 8 hours, then I
turned the roast, subjecting the
top half to the liquid. Another
8 hours at 225 degrees and the
finished product was about
6 pounds of prime venison
chopped BBQ! Drain the liquid
from the roast, chop the meat
and add fresh BBQ sauce. Some
of the best tasting BBQ on the
planet!
Yes, after a long wait of many
years, I finally decided to harvest a buck close to home. After
reading the account of this hunt,
I think you can fully understand
just how much I enjoyed the entire experience, everything from
loosing the arrow to preparing
the meat. May this lifestyle go
on for a long, long time!

Lake Fork produces second ShareLunker of season; Lake Athens piles on
ATHENS—Lake Fork produced its second Toyota ShareLunker of the season December
27. The fish is also the second
entry into the program during
the current season.
On December 30 Lake Athens produced its second ShareLunker ever, a 13.76-pound fish
caught by Jason Lee Hanson of
Athens shortly after 9:00 a.m.
Blake Eppinette of Downsville, Louisiana, caught the
13.6-pound Lake Fork bass
about 5:00 p.m. and took it to
the Minnow Bucket, an official
Toyota ShareLunker Weigh
and Holding Station. The fish
was in great distress from an
overinflated swim bladder after
having been pulled from 30 feet
of water. Despite valiant efforts
by the angler, Minnow Bucket
and Texas Parks and Wildlife
Department staff, the fish did
not survive.
The fish was 21.5 inches in
girth and 25.825 inches long. It
is ShareLunker entry number
550.
Hanson was fishing in 12 to
14 feet of water near the City
of Athens water intake using a
Norman DD-22 when Toyota
ShareLunker 551 hit. He had
been catching good fish all
morning despite temperatures
near freezing and knew he had
a 13-pounder when the fish surfaced. Length of the fish was
27.75 inches, and girth was
20.25 inches.
The last ShareLunker from
Lake Athens was caught in
1987 and weighed 13.81
pounds. The lake record, 14.19
pounds, was caught in 1988 but
was not entered into the ShareLunker program because it was
not caught during the season,
which runs from October 1
through April 30.
Anyone legally catching a
13-pound or bigger largemouth
bass from Texas waters, public
or private, between October 1
and April 30 may submit the
fish to the Toyota ShareLunker
program. Fish will be picked up
by TPWD personnel within 12
hours.
Anglers entering fish into the
Toyota ShareLunker program
receive a free replica of their
fish, a certificate and ShareLunker clothing and are recog-

nized at a banquet at the Texas
Freshwater Fisheries Center
in Athens. The person who
catches the season’s largest entry will be named Angler of the
Year. If the Angler of the Year
is a Texas resident, that person
also receives a lifetime fishing
license.
The number to call to report
a ShareLunker catch is (903)
681-0550. If poor cell phone
service prevents use of the
voice number, anglers can leave
a phone number (including area
code) at (888) 784-0600.
Official ShareLunker weigh
and holding stations have been
established at a number of reservoirs; a list is at http://www.
tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/visitorcenters/tffc/sharelunker/holding/.

and rules of the ShareLunker
program, tips on caring for big
bass, a list of official Toyota
ShareLunker weigh and holding stations and a recap of last
year’s season, see www.tpwd.

The
site also includes a searchable
database of all fish entered into
the program along with pictures where available.

ShareLunker entries are used
in a selective breeding program
at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) in Athens.
Some of the offspring from
these fish are stocked back into
the water body from which
they were caught. Other ShareLunker offspring are stocked in
public waters around the state
in an attempt to increase the
overall size and growth rate of
largemouth bass in Texas.
The Toyota ShareLunker
Program is made possible by
a grant to the Texas Parks &
Wildlife Foundation from Gulf
States Toyota. Toyota is a longtime supporter of the Foundation and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, providing
major funding for a wide variety of education, fish, parks and
wildlife projects. Toyota also
sponsors the Toyota Texas Bass

bass fishing, which will be held
at Lake Fork in May 2014.

Going all electric
Luke Clayton
Almost three years ago, Ken Blackstock and his brother Robert came out to my home with one of Ken’s Intimidator electric
“hunting buggies” in tow. I have a friend that had been using one
of these converted golf carts and he was highly impressed at not
only the vehicle’s service off road but its low price when compared to nationally advertised units. With a price tag of about six
thousand dollars, this sounded like just what I’d been looking for.
But I must admit, I did have my misgivings. What kind of range
could I expect from an electric ATV? Would it have the power I
need to negotiate steep terrain? How often would I have to replace
the batteries?
I had visited with Blackstock on the phone several times and
was anxious for us to drive the unit a mile or so from my home
to some land that I have leased and put it through it’s paces. If
one can fall in love with an inanimate piece of machinery, I fell in
love with what became my own electric ‘hunting buggy”! It was
whisper quiet, made no noise at all and, it was powerful. I never
liked noisy ATV’s with diesel or gasoline engines around areas
where I hunt. With the three of us aboard, probably around 700
pounds, what was to become my personal hunting buggy easily
traversed the steep grades of a couple of creek crossing and with
the buggy’s high ground clearance, took us anyplace on the lease
we wanted to go.
I was impressed but concerned about run time between charges.
How far can I travel on fully charged batteries? Ken said he often
drives his machines 20 miles between charges and has had them
go even farther during tests. We drove the buggy a couple hours
and went into places on the lease that I had previously walked to. I
was convinced that this rugged machine would serve my purposed
on terrain in Texas but a partner and I also outfit elk and bear hunts
up in northern Colorado. I wanted a machine that would do double
duty up in the mountains. We have to traverse a couple thousand
feet in elevation change over the course of a three mile drive. Could
it do that, when hauling 3 or 4 men? I had watched some videos
Blackstock filmed of his buggies traversing some grades as steep
as any we deal with in Colorado and, with ease. After that initial
test drive and watching the videos,

I was sold. Ken and his brother
left my home with an empty
trailer. I had myself an electric
machine that has since proven
itself on many occasions during the course of the past thirty
months. Battery life is excellent
with these units. Robert Blackstock, Ken’s brother, has been
using the same batteries for the
past 4 years and his machine is
every bit as powerful as the one
I’ve been using for just over 2
years.
After Blackstock works his
conversion magic on what most
of us know as a golf cart, a huge
transformation takes place. I
truly believe the term golf cart
leads many folks to believe that
these hunting buggies would
be better suited for negotiating the smooth surfaces of
greens on golf courses than the
rough conditions encountered
on a Texas deer lease of high
country hunt in the mountains.
Nothing could be farther from
the truth! After the completion
of the conversion, the only link
these buggies have with a golf
cart is the frame.
Let’s take a look at what actually occurs when a EZ Go
golf cart is stripped down to
the frame and transformed into
a vehicle well suited for negotiating rough country. First,
says Blackstock, the basic 3
HP electric motor standard on
golf carts is replaced with a
powerful 9 HP motor made in
the US. Next, the standard 175
amp controller is replaced with
a 500 amp regenerative braking
power controller. With this new
controller, the vehicle comes to
a stop on downhill grades when
the accelerator petal is released.
The batteries are actually recharging on downhill slopes
as well. Standard leaf springs
are replaced with heavy duty
springs and heavy duty shocks.
A 4 inch lift kit, new tie rods,
12 inch aluminum light weight
mag wheels with 23 inch all
terrain tires, and front wheel
hubs are installed.
With a complete rewiring with
4 gauge wire and new heavy
duty batteries, a flip rear seat
that converts into a bed, gun
or bow racks, metal basket
on the front, camo bodies and
new seats, the transformation is
completed.
Electric vehicles are ideal for
night hunting hogs or predators when staying on the move
is the name of the game. I use
mine for transporting corn to
feeders and, as the accompanying image shows, hauling game
out of the woods. In the course
of the last two years, my buggy
has saved me untold packing
and dragging of game. My partner in our outfitting business
and I pull our buggies up to
the mountains north of Steamboat Colorado and we’ve found
them to be worth their weight
in gold in transporting hunters
quietly into the areas we hunt
elk and bear. On many occa-
sion, we have had game walk
across trails a few yard in front
of the buggies. We live on a
few acres in the country and
seldom a day passes without
our hunting buggy being put to
work hauling wood, running to
and from the mail box or just
checking out the garden.
My intent is not to bash
gasoline or diesel off road vehicles. They seem to serve
the purpose of many outdoor
folks just fine. For my money,
Luke has used his Intimidator electric vehicle made by Plano
Golf Carts for the past 2 years. Here his Intimidator is put to
work hauling a buck out of some very rough country 2 weeks
ago. Photo by Luke Clayton
though, I choose electricity and
I especially like the dollar savings these converted golf carts
provide. Regardless whether I
am on a photographic mission,
scouting for game sign or actually hunting, I like to be quiet
when I am in the outdoors.
When I am on my Intimidator, the game never knows I am
there. I like that.

LAKE FORK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
JANUARY NEWS
HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP TOURNAMENT
COMING TO LAKE FORK
Fishing has become a major competitive sport across the world and thousands of
American students are jumping aboard and forming High School teams across the
nation. Just last month, 524 student anglers in the S.E. Texas region fished a league
tournament at Sam Rayburn despite temperatures in the high 30’s. Attendance to
the event set a new record for the Student Angler Federation (SAF), a program
which is a division of FLW’s Bass Federation.
The Lake Fork Chamber of Commerce will be hosting “The Lake Fork Open” a
college scholarship tournament open to high school anglers across the country, July
26 - 27. Randy Qualls, President of Legend Boats has already committed to a major
sponsorship roll in the event providing financial support as well as key logistics
during the tournament.
The committee is expecting 600 students (along with their 300 boat captains) for
the event. Families are also a large part of the high school fishing scene, making it a
priority to create a fun filled weekend for the whole family. “This event could provide a real boost to the area economy in late July when tourism begins to decline
due to high temperatures,” stated chamber President Randy Bunch. “This will be a
great opportunity to showcase our community to a broad base of anglers and family
members who may have not had the opportunity to travel to Lake Fork before”.
Community volunteers are needed and volunteers do not need to be a member of
the chamber to participate. There are several committees in the areas of planning,
entertainment, logistics and fund raising and no long term commitment is required.
If you would like to get involved with this exciting new event, or would like more
information email: Tracy Hatton at [email protected] or call her at
903-878-2529.

keeping together is progress;
working together is success.”
