A little girl (Mackenzie Foy) lives in a very grown-up world with her mother (Rachel McAdams), who tries to make sure she is prepared for it. Her neighbor, The Aviator (Jeff Bridges), introduces the girl to an extraordinary world where anything is possible. He has had a long and storied career that has shown his commitment to taking on compelling and dynamic roles. But in the gripping film BLACK MASS under the skillful direction of Scott Cooper, Johnny Depp delivers his defining performance to date. The Modern Master Award is the highest honor presented by SBIFF. They are artists in the truest sense of the word who continue to surprise and inspire audiences with their talent. Their recent turn in SPOTLIGHT demonstrates their skills both harmoniously as an ensemble and individually, and it is an honor to celebrate their work with the American Riviera Award. Directed by Terrence Malick and featuring Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Freida Pinto, Isabel Lucas, Imogen Poots, Wes Bentley, Brian Dennehy and Teresa Palmer, KNIGHT OF CUPS follows writer Rick (Bale) on an odyssey through the playgrounds of Los Angeles and Las Vegas as he undertakes a search for love and self. His quest to break the spell of his disenchantment takes him on a series of adventures with six alluring women. We’ve long been following the careers of Brie and Saoirse and their recent roles as empowered young women who transcend time, place and circumstance. We are so proud to be jointly celebrating these two great actresses in such strong performances. This is the first time the award will be given to two honorees. Both Brie and Saoirse had previously been awarded the festival’s Virtuoso Award, in 2014 and 2010 respectively. Cinema Vanguard Award Rooney Mara Friday February 12, 8:00 PM Arlington Theatre From her scene-stealing turn in THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO to her outstanding performance in this year’s CAROL, Rooney has repeatedly showcased her talents as one of the most gifted actors of her generation. We truly admire the enigmatic and complex nature of her performances. She’s an adept, beguiling actor, and we are proud to present her with this year’s Cinema Vanguard Award. The Cinema Vanguard Award was established to recognize actors who have had a strong influence on American Cinema. 4 5 EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS Closing Night Film Marguerite MIKE’S FIELD TRIP TO THE MOVIES Sponsored by Santa Barbara Foundation, Union Bank, Wells Fargo, Bentson Foundation, Macy’s, and The Volentine Family Foundation Mike’s Field Trip to the Movies serves 4,000+ fifth- and sixth-grade students in Santa Barbara County. Following a screening of INSIDE OUT, director Pete Docter will lead the students in an immersive Q&A about the art of filmmaking. SBIFF provides free bus transportation to all participating Title I schools. Saturday February 13, 8:00 PM Arlington Theatre With support from uniFrance Films and the Consulate General of France in Los Angeles Directed by Xavier Giannoli, this funny and emotional drama takes place in Paris during the1920s. Marguerite Dumont (Catherine Frot) loves to sing for her friends, although she’s not a talented singer. Both her friends and her husband have kept her fantasy alive. When a provocative journalist decides to write a rave article on her latest performance, Marguerite starts to believe even further in her talent. The problem begins when she decides to perform in front of a real audience. PRODUCERS PANEL Saturday February 6, 10:00 AM Lobero Theatre “Movers and Shakers” brings together some of today’s most established producers to share their insights in sparkling conversation. The Producers Panel allows some of the industry’s leading professionals to discuss their current projects and what they hope to see for the future of filmmaking. This panel can provide insight into the business as well as the creative sides of producers. WRITERS PANEL Saturday February 6, 1:00 PM Lobero Theatre “It Starts with the Script” brings together some of today’s most talented and innovative writing professionals as they discuss the process for giving life to film. In this panel, top writers converse about what it takes to write a script and about their journeys to the big screen. Hear some of the most gifted writers in Hollywood talk about the challenges in their craft. 10-10-10 STUDENT COMPETITIONS Saturday February 13 - 2:00 PM Arlington Theatre Sponsored by Montecito Bank & Trust, Final Draft, and Mary Beth Riordan Joining student screenwriters and filmmakers with mentoring industry professionals, the 10-10-10 Student Screenwriting and Filmmaking Competitions foster a new generation of talent. Participants in these two competitions join to produce a total of ten films that are publicly screened for FREE on the last day of the festival. FILM STUDIES PROGRAM Sponsored by Lynda Weinman and Bruce Heavin The student film studies program brings undergraduate students from across the country for a three-day symposium with a focus on film appreciation, criticism, and analysis. Students will have the opportunity to learn from notable industry professionals. They will get a behind-the-scenes look at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival through a unique mix of guided and self-guided opportunities, allowing students to customize the experience and benefit from all the Festival has to offer. Students will have access to screenings, panels, Q&A sessions, celebrity tribute events, and private sessions with filmmakers and media professionals in a classroom setting. Thanks to the generosity of Lynda Weinman and Bruce Heavin, the number of students allowed has doubled, and the program will be completely FREE including travel and lodging. WOMEN’S PANEL Saturday February 13, 11:00 AM Lobero Theatre Sponsored by Brooks Institute 6 The “Creative Forces: Women in the Biz” panel debuted in 2005 and celebrates influential women in film. The Earl of Huntingdon (Douglas Fairbanks) learns from his beloved Lady Marian Fitzwalter (Enid Bennett) that the throne of King Richard the Lion-Hearted (Wallace Beery) has been usurped by his treacherous brother, Prince John (Sam De Grasse) while the king was off fighting the Crusades. Huntingdon adopts the name Robin Hood and gathers a band of merry men led by the stalwart Little John (Alan Hale) to fight the prince and his henchman, the High Sheriff of Nottingham (William Lowery).
