Words From the President
It is with a heavy heart that I write this. My friend and long time
NBN board member, president, festival booking agent and BAB emcee
for over 20 years has passed. Mark Johnson died Thursday morning,
June 30, 2016 after a long battle with cancer. He fought a valiant fight.
Mark and I had known each other for over 30 years and we butted
heads on numerous occasions but our friendship always survived. I will
miss my friend and know that he will be terribly missed by everyone
who knew him. But especially I want to send my love and comforting
thoughts to Mark’s wife, Michelle, and his extended family. Arrangements were not available as I write this, but as soon as I know, we will
post the information on the website and the NBN Facebook page. Rest
easy my friend.
Please check out this latest issue of the Blues News for all the upcoming events especially the IBC’s (International Blues Challenge) being
held on July 24th at Papa Ciccio’s in Hampton. The ad is on the back
page.
I apologize for my short note this time but having had several
deaths in my life recently, just don’t feel like being too chipper and
upbeat at the moment.
Time heals.
I’ve really got the blues.

MARK JOHNSON (3/23/60 – 6/30/16)
My father used to say that getting old wasn’t for sissies and on days
like today it rings true. Shortly after moving to Hampton Roads in the
late ‘80s I became involved with the local blues society, the Natchel’
Blues Network, and one of the first people I met was Mark Johnson.
Originally from New York, Mark had a great sense of humor, a deep
appreciation of family and a love of all things music. If you’ve ever been
to Blues At The Beach, Harborfest, Bayou Boogaloo or any other NBN
sponsored event you’ve more than likely seen Mark -- he was the voice
of live blues music in this area for 25+ years.
This morning, after a long illness, Mark passed away. He was a
champion of local music, a loving husband and a great friend that I will
miss terribly -- there are no words. A particularly fond memory of mine
was when he allowed me to do Buddy Guy’s stage introduction at the
last Town Point Jazz & Blues Festival, knowing how much I loved Buddy’s music and playing.
Tell your friends and family that you love them, listen to some good
music, shake your ass and raise your glass to one of the best...Bluesman
Mark Johnson, 3/23/60-6/30/16. If anyone made that dash in the middle
count, it was this guy. I love you, Mark...RIP

Groundbreaking guitarist and
vocalist Lonnie Mack, known as one
of rock’s first true guitar heroes, died
on April 21, 2016 of natural causes at
Centennial Medical Center near his
home in Smithville, Tennessee. His
early instrumental recordings – among
them “Wham!” and “Memphis” -influenced many of rock’s greatest
players, including Eric Clapton, Duane
Allman, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page
and Stevie Ray Vaughan. He was 74.
Rolling Stone called him “a pioneer
in rock guitar soloing.” Guitar World
said, “Mack attacked the strings with
fast, aggressive single-string phrasing and a seamless rhythm style that
significantly raised the guitar virtuoso
bar and foreshadowed the arenasized tones of guitar heroes to come.”
The Chicago Tribune wrote, “With the
wiggle of a whammy bar and a blinding run of notes up and down the neck
of his classic Gibson Flying V, Lonnie
Mack launched the modern guitar
era.”
Drawing from influences as
diverse as rhythm & blues, country,
gospel and rockabilly, Mack’s guitar
work continues to be revered by generation after generation of musicians.
He recorded a number of singles and
a total of 11
albums for
labels including Fraternity, Elektra,
Alligator, Epic
and Capitol.
When Alligator Records
approached
Lonnie to do
an album, the
result was
1985’s Strike
Like Lightning,
co-produced
by Lonnie
and Stevie Ray Vaughan and featuring
Stevie’s guitar on several tracks.
Mack recorded two more albums
for Alligator, 1986’s Second Sight and
1990’s Live! Attack Of the Killer V. In
between he signed with Epic Records
and released Roadhouses And Dancehalls
in 1988. Mack continued to tour into
the 2000s. He relocated to Smithville,
Tennessee where he continued writing songs but ceased active touring. In
2001 he was inducted into the International Guitar Hall Of Fame and in 2005
into the Rockabilly Hall Of Fame.
He is survived by five children and
multitudes of grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Candye Kane, the West Coast
blues diva known as “The Toughest Girl
Alive” died at 10 pm, May 6th, 2016 at
the age of 54 after an 8-year battle with
pancreatic cancer.
Kane was born November 13th,
1961 in Ventura, California and
performed opera, punk and country
before finding inspiration in the brash
stylings of artists such as Bessie Smith,
Big Maybelle, and Big Mama Thornton
while majoring in women’s studies. A
talented songwriter, her poignant and
sometimes comically self-deprecating
lyrics were the stuff of legend.
In 2008, she was diagnosed with
pancreatic cancer and a neuroendocrine tumor was successfully removed.
The cancer reappeared in 2011 and
although feeling the effects, with lots
of medication and frequent hospital
visits, she continued to tour, playing
over 250 shows a
year, never losing
hope and preaching
that faith is what
keeps us going.
Candye was an

Female Artist of the

Kane
had been
hospitalized
since January

year at Cedars Sinai in
Los Angeles.
In one of her
last Facebook
posts from
February, she
semi-joked,
“Leave it to me to get the weirdest cancer and the rarest condition
anywhere!“ But quickly followed it
up with her wish that she could leave
the hospital and return to music. “It is
what gives my life meaning.”

n THE RECORDING ACADEMY has just announced that it will be adding a
second blues category to its roster of awards. GRAMMYs will be awarded to

American Roots field for the GRAMMY Awards, effective immediately. This
change was the result of the behind-the-scenes leadership of the Blues Task
Force made up of blues industry professionals who are passionate that this
genre be recognized for its place in American music. Voices from all sectors of
the blues world spoke up and supported this initiative, and multiple meetings
of Recording Academy representatives with Blues Foundation members during
Blues Music Awards week helped pave the way to this important change.

Summer Recipes
Submitted by Dr. Joe
My pal Lorraine Eaton gave me permission to use this gem from her
book Tidewater Table, concocted by Carrie Rodgers of Warrenton and
promoted by The Virginia Egg Council. It is sure to be a hit at any party.
Shrimply Deviled Eggs
6 hard boiled eggs, peeled
12 oz beer
1 tsp Old Bay
2 cups water
12 large shrimp whole plus 1.5 cups large shrimp
3-4 tbsp mayo
1 tbsp pesto
2 tbsp capers w/ juice
2 tbsp finely chopped onions
Salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic salt, and a speck of Dijon mustard, to taste
Paprika to garnish
Pour beer in saucepan with Old Bay and 2 cups water, bring to boil. Put
all the shrimp in, bring to a second boil and turn off the heat. Leave
shrimp in until pink, about 5 mins. Drain and peel. Set aside 12 large
shrimp, chop the rest.
Slice hard-boiled eggs in half lengthwise. Scoop out yolks and place in a
mixing bowl.
Mash the yolks. Add mayo, pesto, capers, onions, parsley, and seasoning.
Add the chopped shrimp, mix thoroughly.
Spoon mixture into eggs, place one whole shrimp on top of each egg,
sprinkle with paprika, and refrigerate until ready to serve.
****Virginia Beach Serial Griller Modification: smoke peeled hardboiled eggs on
cool side of charcoal grill for 1-2 hours at 200 degrees before cutting****
{All other recipes are my own creations.}
Dr. Joe’s Blues Blaster Ribs
Natchel Rib rub:
4 tsp paprika
3 tsp whole black peppercorns
2 tsp coriander seed or powder
2 tsp cumin seed or powder
2 tsp onion powder
2 tsp garlic powder
½ tsp hot pepper powder
½ tsp nutmeg (fresh grated is best)
Grind all ingredients in coffee grinder or use mortar & pestle
Remove membrane from ribs by loosening with butter knife and peeling off by gripping with a paper towel. Dry ribs with paper towel.
Shake kosher salt on ribs
Paint ribs with spicy brown mustard
Rub ribs with rub on both sides
Brown bottom of ribs on open flame for a few minutes until sizzling
Move away from flame and close/crack lid and keep temperature at
225ish for 3-5 hours bone side down. Spray with squirt bottle full of
water or apple juice every 20-30 minutes to keep ribs from drying out
Paint with your favorite barbecue sauce at the end if you desire. Wrap
ribs in tin foil and continue cooking at 200 for 2.5 hrs if you desire. Ribs
can be prepped a few days in advance if you like, wrap in foil and place
in a 2-gallon Ziploc in frig.
Fursey’s Grilled Stuffed Poblano Peppers
6 large poblano peppers
1 can of Mexican refried beans, heated
1 Lipton Mexican rice packet, prepared
12 raw shrimp, peeled and cut in half (cooked chicken, pork or beef
works, too)
Shredded cheese i.e. Mexican
Traditional Mexican brown salsa/sauce (not the stuff you dip chips into)
Cut top off of poblano, scoop out inside. Pack 4 pieces of shrimp,
refried beans, rice, cheese, and a shot of sauce into each pepper. Pin lid
back on and pin with skewer or thick toothpicks. Char peppers on all
sides, then remove from flame to other side of grill and close lid for 5-10
minutes until tender. Remove and enjoy.
$ir Joe’s Surfing Salsa
More fun in the summer when you can use fresh veggies from your
garden, but store-bought ingredients will work, and will always be better than store-bought salsa.
10 tomatoes i.e. Roma
2 bunches cilantro
1 red onion
1 bell pepper
Head of garlic
2 cans El Pato Salsa De Chile Fresco (available in Mexican aisle or at
Mexican stores)
Dash of hot pepper powder or hot sauce
Chop everything up real small, and mix it together. Great on everything from eggs to steak, as well as a dip for chips. Gets better with age
in the refrigerator.

JOHN MAYALL’S BLUESBREAKERS
Live in 1967 - Volume Two
Forty Below Records FBR-013
Classic Blues from some
music legends…John Mayall,
Peter Green, John McVie, Mick
Fleetwood … you know, basically
Fleetwood Mac before Stevie Nicks
started stinkin’ it up. These rare
“never before heard live performances” showcase some classic
blues tunes like “Tears In My
Eyes,” Stormy Monday,” “Talk to
Your Daughter,” and many more.
The musicians showcase their mastery of guitar, piano, harp, bass,
and drums with that funky Hippy
Johnny sound. This CD really gives
me the vibe of being at a 1960s
concert, which can either be good
or bad depending on what you are
looking for. If you love pure uncut
raw gritty blues, this CD is for you.
If you are more of a digital purist,
this may sound as if it was recorded on a Mattel Close-n-Play. But I
really dig this CD, one that I like
more each time I listen to it. This is
a great CD to put on outside while
you are grilling and quenching
your thirst, or over an outdoor fire
as the sun sets. You will think you
WALKIN’ CANE MARK
Tryin’ To Make You Understand
(Remastered) Enable Records Enable Records-1001
Walkin’ Cane Mark sharpened his teeth under the tutelage
of Chicago Harp Pioneer Snooky
Pryor and The One and Only
Junior Wells. He earned his nickname when Willie Dixon saw
him walking with a cane after an
injury. Have I gotten your attention
yet? Like it says on his website,
“With Walkin’ Cane Mark you get
your money’s worth in the first 5
minutes… the rest is free!” And
he is not exaggerating. This CD
is packed full of jamming dance
tunes, excellent guitar, and great
lyrics. Some that touch you way
down deep. One such song is “Eddie’s Boogie” where he is singing
about his infant son who boogies
in his diaper all night long. But this
CD is no kids play whatsoever. In
“Tryin’ To Make You Understand”
he sings about trying to get rid of
his girlfriend to the point that he
is telling her to find another man.
Maybe he is trying to make time
for the “Arizona Woman,” which is
his tale of an oversexed girlfriend

reggy. These guys are no strangers
to each other, as they have been
playing together for 13 years and
have known each other for almost
twice as long. Smoooooth groovy
blues jams highlight this CD with a
lot of great lyrics. Very tight guitars
make jams like “Fool Hearted Lover” get your whole body grooving.
In “Don’t Burn My Cornbread”
more excellent guitar is showcased.
In “Nitty Gritty” he has some
incredible lyrics when he says that
he “ain’t trying to put other music
down but if it wasn’t for the blues
it wouldn’t be around.” Another
thing that I enjoy is that some
songs are fast, while others are
slow. In another slow one, “Amos
Moses,” he reflects on memories
of days past. Mac’s brother Leroy
Arnold’s aura permeates the CD
and he makes a cameo in “Uncle
Dewitt’s Café,” singing about
things that really happened with
his old sweetheart. Way back in
1946 Leroy constructed the original gas can guitar for Mac when
he was knee high to a crawdaddy.
“How I Need You” is a love ballad to his woman telling her how
much she means to him and what
an influence she has made on his
life. A real sweet song. Who is Mac
Arnold? Let’s just say he goes way
back like “Train Smoke.” This guy
joined the Muddy Waters band at

is pretty cool, especially at a time
Austin Brashier on lead guitar and
when CDs are 15-20 bucks on the
vocals does a fine job of belting out
sleeve that will blow him out of his
mind. The poor guy just can’t catch
a break. But this twangy number
is a great song, chock full of harpy
wah-wah. Later, he explains that
it’s hard to be a good man when
“The Devil’s at your door.” Even
Mrs. Fursey, a non-blues fan,
exclaimed, “I like the rhythm…
the beat.” Personally, I think Kirk
Hawley traded his soul to the
Devil for those guitar skills he displays in this song. You can feel the
electricity coming from his fingers.
Walkin’ Cane Mark later sings that
he wants to go swimming in an
“Ocean Full of Women” and gives
a new take on one of Popeye’s
classics. He says the feeling is fine
when he gets a nibble on the end of
his line…you ain’t lying! He says

maybe you can pop this in when

some gritty ballads while plucking
his guitar and making it sing. Max
Hightower lays it down steady on
the harp, keyboards, and just about
every other instrument he can get
his hands on. Scotty Hawkins does
a fine job on percussion, and Mac
Arnold of course tears it up on
the Gas Can. So pop this baby in

CHRIS BEARD
Eye of the Witch
Destin Records DesTIN-1015
Hot electric guitar, funky
background, and poppin’ horns
start this CD off jumpin’ and don’t
let up. In “House of Shame” Chris
sings of his repent after doing the
dirty deed, and backs it up with
another scorching guitar solo. This
guy’s guitar skills can even make
a slow jam rock. This Rochester,
NY bluesman just keeps bringing
it song after song as you envision yourself in a smoky bar with
some dim lighting, grooving next
to your baby as you are eyeing
your buddy’s woman with some
less-than-honorable things on your
mind. This guy has been playing
the blues since Sesame Street days
as he learned to play the guitar by
age 5 and was playing one of my
favorites, “Green Onions,” at age 6!
Son of Rochester guitar legend Joe
Beard, Chris has been plying his
trade in the Northeast for over 20
years. In “Older Fool” he reminds
us that there ain’t no fool like an
old fool. Sometimes, if you close
your eyes, you think you are listening to the late great Luther Allison
on the guitar. This guy is THAT
good! The unmistakable sound of
the Hammond B-3 is apparent on
this CD as is the sax and trumpets.
I could break down every song
on this CD for you but why waste
your time? Just go out and buy
it already. You will not be disappointed! If you don’t, we might put
you in the “House of Shame.”
JOHNNY NO
Modern Hymns for the
Gentleman Loafer
Riviera Records I grabbed this CD because the
cover art immediately grabbed my
attention. Upon further inspection
you will notice that most of the
songs are longer than your average
song, which I also like. Because as
a gentleman loafer myself, I tend
to take my time and that means
taking a little bit longer. Some of
the jams have an almost spooky
feel, with scratchy guitar chords
and almost creepy organs and
horns. It all meshes well together
and brings a fine groovy sound
that you will want to kick back and
roll with. This is a dark, unbridled
blues style you don’t come across
every day. Hailing from Mobile,
Alabama this Port City Garage
Blues Rocker will surely keep your
fingers snapping and your head
bobbin’. In “Cradle to the Grave”
and “90 Percent” we hear just a
sampling of what guitar virtuoso
Al McNabb has in store for you
as he literally tears the strings off
the guitar and rips through one
jamming chord after another. In
“Sho Lil” he rocks out a funky jam
that makes you want to get your
swamp boogie boots on and gits to
stompin’! Then Al breaks in with
that devious guitar-work of his
again and boom, we are back in
Jimi Hendrix land! Rockin’ from
start to finish, this is one hot CD.
All in all, a CD that is great any
time of the year, but would also be
a good one for a Halloween party.
So remember when they say yes,
you say No. Johnny No. Because
you might be a loafer, but you are
a gentleman loafer.

the talents of this fine ensemble.
It comes as no surprise to find out

ORQ says, he loves his baby, but
she “Let Me Have My Fun”…and
it sounds like he is having a lot of
fun playing the blues. So run out

URBAN HILL
The Real Deal Bluestar Records First off, a big shout out to
these guys for stepping in at Roger
Brown’s back in April and hosting our Natchel’ Blues Jam Session
when Anthony Rosano got his fingers cut off in a bologna slicer. Just

kidding, Anthony was just under
the weather. But you will never be
under the weather with this trusty
CD at your side. Plenty of local
references for the Tidewater Blues
aficionado, this CD is jam-packed
with good grooving blues. Legendary Tidewater bluesman Lathan
“Pudgee” Hill is the Hill part of
the band with a pedigree as fine as
any mentioned previously in these
reviews. Pudgee has performed
with the likes of Kenny Neal, Little
Milton, Luther Allison and Albert
King, and tears it up on the vocals
and guitar. But as I watched them
play, I kept noticing the other
guitarist just-a-smilin’ away. Like
he was having a real good time
playing, and thoroughly enjoying himself. So I had to go talk to
this dude and see what he was
all about. Come to find out Paul
Urban, the Urban part of the band,
has been playing up and down the
East Coast for 40 years and counts
many of my faves among his influences…names like Muddy, Ole B,
John Lee Hooker, Clapton, Beck,
Allman and Johnny Winter. Dennis
Livreri and Kevin Yoder round out
the band playing drums and bass
respectively, and do a heck of a job
at it.
The CD starts out with the
instrumental “Sandbridge Sunny
Day” that just has a happy feel
about it that takes you on a road
trip down that long windy road
that leads to its namesake. “Goin’
Home” has a gritty, earthy feeling to it with some outstanding
guitar-work. This song hit me on
a personal note and took me back
to the time I rode a bus home from
Colorado Springs to Norfolk when
I was in the Army. The joy when
the 64 sign appeared is expressed
in the song. In “Fishnet Stockings”
they cut a groove that sounds fresh
4
10
out of the MC-5 playbook. This
song must be where they get the
inspiration for the CD title because
this song is “The Real Deal”! In “It
Ain’t Easy Being Me” they start
jamming and then what’s that I
hear? I’m thinking to myself “that
harp sounds familiar”…and then I
think to myself that’s got to be Bobby “The Grim Reaper” BlackHat.
And it was sho’ nuff. Bobby adds
his trademark harmonica work
to this already excellent album to
make it an over the top jam-blaster.
In “Goin’ to Chicago” they rip out
another quality number with a nod
to “Fruit Jar” Lowe Stokes. The
final track on the CD is an amazing
10:45 and doesn’t let you down for
a single second as they sing about
finding that “Blackbird.” With all
this combined, Urban Hill is my
CD pick of the month, because it
is definitely “The Real Deal.” So
go out and get yourself a copy or
maybe see them play live. You will
not be disappointed. In the meantime, hopefully I can go find me a
Blackbird for an outside woman by
the time you are reading this.
summer. Packed full of fun songs
with good lyrics and excellent
music, this CD will not disappoint.
Starting out with “Boogie Woogie
Barbecue,” Mitch Woods leads us
on a finger-poppin’ toe tapper that
will make you hungry and want to
dance at the same time, as he sings
about all the good stuff he is going
to eat. The legendary Louis Jordan
takes it from there with “Saturday
Night Fish Fry,” which showcase
good piano and you “never seen
such scufflin’ and shufflin’ till the
break of dawn.” “Potato Chips”
by Slim Gaillard amazes me that
Lay’s hasn’t picked it up yet. Slim
breaks down his love for potato
chips and all the reasons he likes
them. “Crunch crunch I don’t
want no lunch, all I want is potato
chips.” Just listening to this CD
will make you hungry. Then we go
way back with Bessie Smith singing “Gimme a Pigfoot and a Bottle
of Beer” and by the end of the song
you are ready for some, too. Andre
Williams’ “Pass the Biscuits Please”
takes you back to your youth as he
narrates a family dinner from the
child’s point of view. All he wants
is a biscuit, but everyone keeps
passing him by. He also takes turns
deriding various family members
and guests. There are songs on
here from 1933-1987. A great mix.
This CD is good from start to finish
and is sure to get your barbecue
hoppin’ and poppin’ till the break
of dawn! So put this on the burner
next time the crew comes over.
Just make sure you got some Tums
after eatin’ them pigs feet!

BLUES VINYL FLASHBACK by Dr. Joe
IKE TURNER
Blues Roots
1972 United Artists Records UAS5576
Some people claim there
is a resurgence of vinyl. This is
true, and if you want to go spend
50 bucks for a re-release of the
Led Zeppelin IV you had in high
school, “more power to you,”
as Briscoe Darling would say. I
prefer to scavenge the flea markets and garage sales for those
hidden gems that sometimes cost
as little as a quarter. And no need
to go buy some fancy hipster $500
turntable; I’ve found several double
cassette turntables at garage sales
for 5 bucks or so, speakers included.
Thrift scores are good, and so are
our area record stores like Birdland,
Vinyl Daze, and AKF at the Beach;
The Groove and Skinny’s in Norfolk
(RIP Punnie’s), Fantasy in Newport
News, and others waiting to be
discovered. Take a few minutes and
thumb through that vinyl; you will be
surprised how many things are out
there waiting to be re-discovered…
many not available on CD or very
hard to find. Remember the old days
of Record Bar, Peaches, The Music
Man, Mother’s, and the like? Startin’
to feel me playa? Well, take a look at
what 3 dollars got me on one particular day: Ike Turner’s Blues Roots.
This LP was Ike’s first release
after his split with Tina, and it shows
on every song. One song he is telling
her he doesn’t need her, another song
he is telling her he wants her back,
another song he is telling her to leave
him alone, another song he is saying
he wants to chase other women…
basically the same thing he was
probably saying to her when he
was with her. This record has
some really heavy grooves and
lyrics, and you can really feel the
pain Ike is going through even
as he tries to tell you otherwise.
He does a nice version of “The
Things I Used To Do,” and in
“You’re Still My Baby” he gets
deep into telling a woman, obviously Tina, that he will always
love her. In “Right On” he sings
about how he wants to get down
with the ladies, saying “ain’t no
difference in black and white
when you turn out the light.”
Seems Ike can’t make up his mind
what he wants. One thing is for
certain, Ike’s musical genius still
surfaces on this LP, and it was
recently remastered and re-released on CD. So don’t beat your
woman, beat it on down to the
record store and find you some
vinyl. And if you have an oldie
