MOTIVATION
When you were a small child, did you ever take your pencils or crayons and scribble on
the walls? Did your parents get angry with you?
I want to tell you a true story of a little boy who began his life as an artist by scribbling on
the walls! The boy was named Auguste Renoir, and his father was a tailor who used chalk
to mark the clothes he sewed. Little Renoir would find the bits of chalk his father left
around and would draw on the walls and floors of his home in Paris, France. Auguste’s
father would be upset at the disappearance of his marking chalk, but he had to admit that
his son’s drawings were pretty good.
What do you think Auguste drew on the walls and floor? He sketched portraits of his
parents, his brothers and sisters, the neighbors, and dogs and cats. His mother agreed
that his drawings were good, and she bought Renoir a supply of drawing books and
pencils.
And that is how our master artist, Auguste Renoir, started his life as an artist!

DEVELOPMENT
1. SELF-PORTRAIT
I would like to introduce the adult Auguste Renoir to you. As you study his face, I will
describe the kind of man he was. He was a happy man who enjoyed life. He was shy
about showing his feelings but wasn’t shy about showing his love of life in his paintings.
He is called a “painter of happiness.”
What colors would you imagine a painter of happiness would use? (BRIGHT, WARM,
HAPPY COLORS) Can you imagine “happiness” painted in rainbow colors? Does seeing
a beautiful, colorful rainbow make you feel happy?
Would you use rainbow colors to paint a happy picture? If you would, then you are just
like Renoir. His PALETTE was called a “rainbow palette.” Do you know what a palette is?
(A PLACE AN ARTIST PUTS HIS PAINTS) Renoir used a “rainbow palette” throughout
his life. A few times he changed his way of painting, but he always used the rainbow
colors. Renoir was fascinated with rainbow colors. He worked really hard at capturing the
rainbow color in his pictures.

2. THE SWING
Good for you if you raised your hand! We see many rainbow colors -- but what are all
those light spots we see? (SUN SHINING THROUGH TREES) Have you ever been in a
shady place like this with the light peeking through the trees in spots?
Renoir always liked to paint outdoors, so he could show how sunlight makes magic. Does
this remind you of a fairyland? If you were here, would you be happy? Other artists
shared Renoir’s interest in this magic light, and they became known as IMPRESSIONIST
painters. No one in the beginning understood what the Impressionists were trying to do
with color.
How does this painting titled The Swing make you feel? (WARM, RELAXED, HAPPY,
QUIET) Try to imagine yourself on the swing. If you were dressed as you are today, would
your clothes look different? (YES) Why? (MAGIC OF LIGHT)
Look carefully to answer this. Does the color of something change when the light on it
changes? (YES) Who can show me how that is true in this painting? (MANY
EXAMPLES -- GIRL’S DRESS, HAIR, MAN’S SUIT, THE GROUND)
This is the magic of sunlight that Renoir was showing us. I think we can call you
Impressionists, just like Renoir, because you also saw that light changes color!

3. SEINE AT CHATOU (sane at shah-too)
Would you like to be standing by this beautiful river like the boy you see here? This pretty
place was in the countryside outside of Paris, France where Renoir lived.
On a nice day, Renoir would pack up his paint supplies and travel by train to the country to
enjoy a day of painting. Picture Renoir by the river in front of his easel. As he painted he
spoke to his friends saying, “Just look closely at the water. It changes from hour to hour.
Right now it’s green with a little orange in it, but in an hour it will be yellow and violet, and if
you mix the right values…” and Renoir would go on and on about the colors.
Have you seen a real oil painting in a museum? It’s wonderful to see an original painting,
because the colors are so beautiful. Also, you can walk up very close and see how it

really looks. Raise your hand if you are good at pretending. Let’s pretend we are in a
museum, and we see this Renoir painting from across the room. We like it from afar and
want to get a closer look. So let’s walk across the room and see it up close.

4. CLOSE-UP CHATOU
Can you see Renoir’s brushstrokes? Look carefully at the water. Is it all blue? (NO)
Could Renoir have been talking about this painting when he spoke to his friends about the
changing colors of water? (YES) Quickly look to see how many colors you find in the
water. Did you find a lot? (YES) Was Renoir using his rainbow colors again? (YES)
What is it that makes Renoir’s colors more like the rainbow than the colors we see in this
room? (MAGIC SUNLIGHT)
You found all the colors in the water, now tell me how Renoir put those colors on the
canvas. Are the colors all carefully blended, or are they put on with dashes, commas, and
dots of color? (DOTS AND DASHES) Very good! That is how the Impressionists
painted. They painted quickly, using small strokes of bright color to capture the look of
sunlight and movement. Let’s pretend we are Impressionist artists right now, holding our
paintbrushes. Now show me in the air your quick brushstrokes of dashes, dots, and dabs
of color. You make a great Impressionist!
Which is more fun, to be on the banks of a river or on a boat in the river? (BOAT) Let’s
take a look.

5. THE SKIFF
Do you see any reflections in this Renoir painting? (YES) Quickly count about how many
reflections you see. (MANY) You will be painting a reflection in your art projects, too.
Besides loving to paint sparkling water, Renoir loved to paint…

6. LUNCHEON AT THE BOATING PARTY
… his friends!
While Renoir’s Impressionist friends were interested in showing the magic of light on
nature, Renoir was more interested in the way this magic light would work on people.
Renoir loved to be with people, and many times he painted his friends, as you see here.
Did Renoir carefully pose all these people to paint their PORTRAIT? (NO) He painted
them as they were talking and eating and enjoying themselves. Let’s take a walk through
this painting. Did you know that Renoir planned a path for our eyes to follow? (POINT AS
YOU DESCRIBE DIRECTION COUNTERCLOCKWISE)
Follow me with your artist’s eyes. We start with this man’s arm on the left leaning against
the railing. We continue to the woman’s arm across the table to the arms of the two men.
We notice all the interesting faces across the top of the picture. We follow the woman’s
arm on the railing. And that brings us back to the first man. Renoir planned the path so
that you would notice everything in the painting.
Remember how I told you Renoir liked to paint his friends? Let’s see if you can pick out
the woman who later became his wife. (GIRL ON LEFT WITH DOG) The man facing her
sitting backwards on this chair was a painter friend of Renoir’s.
I need your help to help you understand a new art word. Look at the clothes you have on
today. If colors are nearly the same they blend together. If colors are very different, they
don’t blend, they show CONTRAST. I want you to look at the color of your clothing. Are
you wearing any contrasting colors or are you wearing colors that blend?
Color is only one way to show contrast. What is the opposite of shadow? (LIGHT) Light
contrasts with darker shadows. Do you remember seeing shadows in The Swing
painting? (YES, MANY) Light and shadow contrasted to make everything look “spotty.”
Renoir loved the magic of light! When Renoir painted light, he also painted shadow for
contrast.
CONCLUSION
Renoir was a happy man who painted happiness with his rainbow palette. Let’s see if you
can answer some questions about Renoir.

(The students should have their Learning Packets and a pencil ready.) What fascinated
Renoir about painting water? (REFLECTIONS, COLORS) What is special about how
Auguste Renoir painted? (DABS OF COLOR, LIGHT) The IMPRESSIONISTS painted with
small dabs of colors. We will create light and color dabs with our watercolor crayons to paint
reflections.
Renoir loved to paint outdoors, especially by the edge of a river or pond where he could paint
the reflections of trees and boats in the water. That is what we will do today. We will paint a
landscape along a riverbank, just as Renoir would have. In your Learning Packets, you had
some practice showing REFLECTIONS. (Find an example to share.) Today you will learn
another way to show reflections.
DEMONSTRATION AND ACTIVITY
Have the students repeat each step immediately with their materials:
ORGANIZE YOUR WORK AREA [2 minutes]
1.Place your white paper vertically in the center of your desk, on top of your newsprint.
2.Put your watercolor crayons, brush, and water cup to one side on your paper towel.
3.Use your pencil to print your name on the back of your paper.
WATERCOLOR CRAYONS
Watercolor crayons are harder than your school crayons. You will have to press a little
harder to get the color to show.
THE RIVER BANK [3 minutes]
Watch how to draw the edge of the river.
1.It is very straight and flat. To make it look that way, fold your paper just above or below the
center to make a fold that goes across the page.
2.Use any cool color to draw the line that will be the water’s edge right in the fold. What are
the three cool colors? (BLUE, GREEN, VIOLET)
A TREE TRUNK [5 minutes]
Watch how to make a tree trunk:
1.Use any color, and press lightly, to make a vertical guideline standing upright on the edge
of the water. Place a dot somewhere in the middle of the line where branches will go out and
away from the tree trunk.
2.Start at the bottom and draw a slow, wiggly line that goes up your sketched line to the dot.
When you reach the dot, your wiggly line should branch upward or outward in the sky. Use
very firm pressure on your crayon. Pretend it is like a worm crawling and wiggling up the
tree. When it gets to the dot, it wiggles off in another direction and then stops. You might
have four or five branches that go in different directions from the trunk.
10 PIERRE AUGUSTE RENOIR – Ages 5 – 7 | MeetTheMasters Online Edition
PIERRE-AUGUSTE-RENOIR – AGES 5 – 7 | O NLINE EDITION
3.Add many different colored lines that start at the base of the tree and wiggle along until
they get near the dot where they branch out.
4.You may want to add some grass with dabs of colors along the bank behind the trees.
THE LEAVES [15 minutes]
When we think of trees, we think of the many colors that are found in trees. Decide now if
your tree will be made of warm colors, or cool colors. (Discuss the difference.) Warm trees
are autumn and golden. Spring trees are often cool colors. Think of trees when the sun is
shining and the water is blue. They are green, gold, orange and yellow. If the water is
reflecting the warm colors of the sunset or sunrise, often the trees seem in shadow and are
cool colors. Purple, blue and green are cool colors. Now watch how to put some leaves on
the trees:
1.What colors do you think Renoir would have used for leaves? Many! Use your group of
colors (warm or cool) to draw small circular or oval shapes to fill the leaf area above the
trunk. The students will color over the drawn branches.
2.Alternate colors to give depth to the tree. Overlap the colors and remind the students to
use enough pressure for lots of color.
3.Fill the leaf area with a mixture of warm or cool color “circular shapes.”
DRAWING THE BACKGROUND HILLS [5 minutes]
11 PIERRE AUGUSTE RENOIR – Ages 5 – 7 | MeetTheMasters Online Edition
PIERRE-AUGUSTE-RENOIR – AGES 5 – 7 | O NLINE EDITION
Using the same color group that students used for the leaf foliage (warm, cool), draw two to
three hills in the background of the tree. The hills should remain under the tree. Fill in the hill
areas with watercolor crayon.
COLOR THE WATER [5 minutes]
1.Use warm or cool colors to show water in your picture. If you made a cool tree and hills,
use warmer colors for the water. If you colored your tree and hills with warm colors, use cool
colors for water.
2.Use (horizontal) back and forth strokes with the side of the crayon. Start near the line you
drew and press firmly. Look and plan. You want the reflection of the tree to show in the
water. Leave the reflection area right under your tree lighter than the rest of the water.
Make your marks go from one side to the other. Use less and less pressure as you go down
the page, to make a kind of value scale from dark to light.
3.Keep your strokes all going in the same direction - horizontal. The water should be darkest
at the horizon line.
(When the students are finished coloring, have them put away the watercolor crayons and
collect them before adding the water with the sponge brush.)
CREATE THE REFLECTION [5 minutes]
(Demonstrate first and show the students how they must work very quickly! To achieve good
reflections, the water should sit on top of the paper and not have time to soak into the paper.)
1.Refold your paper to make a solid crease along the water line that goes across your paper.
You will brush on water only to the area below the fold in your paper.
2.Soak sponge in water and touch it to the side of the water cup to let excess water drop off.
12 PIERRE AUGUSTE RENOIR – Ages 5 – 7 | MeetTheMasters Online Edition
PIERRE-AUGUSTE-RENOIR – AGES 5 – 7 | ONLINE EDITION
3.Start on one side at the water line below the fold. Rest the brush firmly against the paper
and pull it across the top of the water - from one side to the other. Then go right back over
that stroke (pulling instead of pushing the brush). It is a two-part stroke - across and back.
4.Soak the brush and paint another two-part stroke right below the first one.
5.Continue down the page, dipping the brush for each two-part stroke. The paper below the
fold should be very wet! (Paint ONLY the water.)
THE REFLECTIONS [2 minutes]
To make the reflection in the water:
1.Quickly fold the top of your paper onto the water part of your paper and press it firmly. Rub
back and forth across the folded paper with the palm of your hand. Take your time! Press
firmly and rub (especially press over where your tree trunk and leaves are). Count to 30.
2.Gently and slowly unfold your paper to see your reflections.
MOUNTING THE ARTIST PROFILE SLIP [2 minutes]
(Profile slips for each artist are provided. They give a brief description of the artist, the
technique, and the media used in the art activity. They should be mounted on the back of
each art project after it is completed.)
1.Write your name on the front of the artist profile slip.
2.Using glue, mount the profile slip on the back of your artwork (when it is dry enough).
3.Encourage students to discuss their artwork at home using this artist slip of information.
CONCLUSION
Please “exhibit” your Impressionist Landscapes. Renoir was fascinated with the changing
colors in water and especially with the reflections. I know he would love your colorful
paintings!
THIS CONCLUDES THE PIERRE AUGUSTE RENOIR UNIT.
