MAD RIVER GLEN
since
1949
Welcome to
Mad River Glen
I
f you’re a skier, you have more likely than not heard of Mad River Glen. It
holds a near mythic place in the pantheon of the world’s legendary ski areas.
What is it that makes Mad River Glen the “holy grail” for so many skiers?
It’s a combination of many things, and for every skier the answer is a little
different. The area’s character, the result of a long and proud history, reflects
the terrain and natural beauty. There is a special camaraderie among the skiers,
with its co-op ownership, non-commercial, family-friendly atmosphere, dedicated
staff, and - of course- the Single Chair, America’s favorite ski lift.
Mad River Glen offers the most challenging and diverse ski terrain in New
England. The trails were cut to follow the mountain’s natural contours. On the
one hand skiers can descend the entire 2,037’ of vertical on true expert terrain
with absolutely no run-outs. On the other hand, Mad River’s mountain layout
with a single base area makes it an ideal family mountain with plenty of blues
and greens to satisfy every level of skier.
The Single Chair limits uphill capacity thus guaranteeing low skier density on
the trails even on the busiest days. Mad River Glen is one of the last bastions
of natural snow skiing in New England and is one of only three areas in North
America that prohibit snowboarding.
Combined, these qualities create a ski experience that stands in stark
contrast to the mainstream world of skiing. The various facets of the Mad River
ski experience appeal to different skiers in different ways, but together they
create a sense of place that is truly unique. The mission of the Mad River Glen
Cooperative is to protect and preserve these special qualities. On behalf of the
skier-owners of Mad River Glen I’d like to invite you to discover for yourself the
experience we are dedicated to preserving.
See you on the mountain,
Jamey Wimble, President

MRG: You Can Ski It‚ Yes You Can
By Mara Gorman
he red and white stickers are unmistakable and world famous. There’s no slogan
quite like “Ski It If You Can.”
T
So is this a challenge? A warning? A joke?
An expression of pride?
Yes, yes, yes, and yes. I can say this with authority because I’m one of the fortunate
people who learned to ski at Mad River as a child in the early 1980s. I never lived in the
Valley, but spent every school vacation and then my college years in Vermont – and never
skied anywhere else.
I never planned to give up downhill skiing, but between marrying a flatlander who had
never skied himself, moving to Delaware and having kids, somehow getting on skis just
never made it to the top of the priority list for about 16 years. But when my husband Matt
and I decided that our young sons really ought to learn to ski, I knew our first experience
as a family had to be at MRG.
I'll confess that although I grew up skiing there, I was nervous about returning after
a 16-year absence. But it turns out that my family is living proof that the slogan on the
stickers is also an invitation: Anyone can ski Mad River Glen. Not only was I able to start
skiing there again after my long absence, but both my sons and Matt learned as well. This
is no small feat, given that he was in his 40s when he did so. Even now, five years later, he’s
not an aggressive skier (sorry honey) but he loves MRG just as much as the rest of us do.
Everyone Can Learn at Mad River Glen
The instructors who work at Mad River Glen tend to have done so for a long time. In fact,
when I started skiing again at 39 I took a private lesson Leigh Clark - who also taught
me the first time around when I was 11. Even the younger teachers often have grown up
skiing at Mad River and have the knowledge of the mountain and the skills to prove it. The
focus of every lesson is on helping you ski to the best of your ability, no matter what the
conditions or terrain, and to make sure that you have fun doing it.
Kids programs at Mad River Glen are offered on weekends and during holidays and they
are at their core all about teaching kids a healthy respect for the terrain while giving them
the skills they need to ski all of it. Kids are grouped according to age and ability and there
are no more than eight for each instructor. You can sign your child up for half- or full-day
programs (choose the latter and lunch is included). It’s not a bad idea to make reservations
in advance, especially if the conditions are good.
Private lessons are also available for kids and adults, and these are a great place to
start if you are a beginning skier or feel intimidated by the terrain. There are also lots of
great clinics for adults including women’s-only Saturdays, mogul-skiing lessons, and
telemark clinics.
And you don’t have to take a lesson to learn at Mad River. The people who ski here regularly
are among some of the best skiers you’ll ever see. I’m always watching and learning as I ride
the lift or survey the trails. See someone doing something especially impressive? It’s small
enough that you can probably find them later in the day and ask them for some tips. Mad
River skiers love to talk about skiing, especially if there’s a delicious local beer involved.

Mad River is Heaven on a Mountain for Kids
There is something about the smaller size of Mad River Glen that seems to make kids feel
at home there. On winter weekends when the kids programs are running it can seem like there
are more children than adults on the mountain sometimes, and I know my boys love that.
And your kids don’t have to be expert skiers to enjoy Mad River Glen. Beginners don’t
even have to ride a lift to enjoy the rope tow and gates at Callie’s Corner, where children
can take gentle runs until they feel confident enough to try the main mountain. And the
Birdland area (serviced by its own mid-mountain chairlift and small base lodge that are
open on weekends and holidays) offers gentler, more groomed terrain that still has a few
surprises in store.
You won’t find a lot of hot-dogging at Mad River or huge crowds, making it a safe place
for older, more experienced kids to go off and ski on their own. And the fact that all the
trails meet at the bottom give even the younger kids the opportunity to do some exploration
before rejoining the family. The lifts also offer their own rites of passage – my boys couldn’t
wait to ride the Sunnyside Double with no adults – so much more fun to them than all four
of us on a quad. And every Mad River Glen child looks forward to his or her first solo ride
on the Single Chair. Let the attendants know both so they can help but also to trumpet to
the waiting line that a newbie is headed up the mountain solo for the first time.
And if you happen to have a child who isn’t too enthusiastic about skiing or who needs
a break from it, be sure to check out the Naturalist programs. You can rent snowshoes
for your whole family and take a guided tour to learn about the animals and trees. Got a
younger child who is too little to ski? The Cricket Club Daycare is state licensed and has
been run by Callie McAllister for four decades. When my younger son was learning to ski
as a three-year-old he spent half his time in lessons and half at the daycare – and in all
honesty, he preferred the latter.
Anyone Can Ski It
The terrain and snow at Mad River Glen are admittedly different from what you’ll find
at other ski areas. Narrower, less groomed, and of course, natural. But there’s a challenge
and simple beauty to the mountain that make it fun for skiers of all levels. It is always
fun to ski because it is always different.
My older son Tommy, who is now 13 but was 6 when he learned to ski, picked up on
this spirit instantly, and before he even had a chance to put on his rented skis that very
first day he wanted to know when he would get to ride the Single Chair to the top of the
mountain. And after a day and a half of slogging up the rope tow and down the small hill
at the bottom under the tutelage of the staff at the ski school, he was able to turn well
enough through the gates that the teachers gave him the go-ahead if not to ride the single,
at least to go up on the mountain.
Whereupon his grandmother, who has covered every inch of the mountain in her thirty-five
years of skiing it, swooped in, took him up the Sunnyside Double Chair, and led him down
to the bottom, just as she did with me when I was only a little older than he was. He never
looked back to see if Matt and I were following. Later as we were riding up the chairlift, we
saw the two of them, Tommy linking his turns, my stepmother urging him on, and the two
of them cheering and hugging with the sheer pleasure of his success.
Sure, "Ski It If You Can" makes for a bit of machismo, even on the part of the kids who
are there (as evidenced by the proud display of bumper stickers on their helmets). But the
fact of the matter is that anyone can ski Mad River Glen – and if they do, they are sure to
have a great time.

Twenty of Mad River’s 45 marked trails are groomed on a
regular basis. When the snow pack is abundant and the skier
traffic warrants, nearly all of these trails are groomed nightly.
Another 10 or so will be tilled occasionally when conditions allow.
With its narrow, twisting, contoured trails, Mad River Glen is not
your typical mountain to groom. The mountain operations crew,
management and the ski patrol draw upon years of experience
to make good grooming decisions. The crew takes a great deal
of pride in providing the best skiing surfaces possible.
Ski It The MRG WAY
ad River Glen has long been renowned for going
against the ski industry’s grain. The fundamental
difference between Mad River Glen and most
other ski areas is that Mad River relies almost completely
upon natural snowfall, something unheard of for a major New
England ski area. Modern snowmaking has conditioned today’s
skiers to expect a very different experience from what they find
at MRG. It is important that skiers understand both what makes
the Mad River Glen experience so different and why this skierowned mountain operates the way it does. From an operational
perspective, Mad River Glen marches to its own beat in terms of
snowmaking, grooming philosophy, snow management and trail
maintenance. Here’s how Mad River Glen’s operations differ from
the ski industry’s conventional wisdom.
M
Snow Farming &
Trail Maintenance
The Mad River Glen operations team has always done a lot
of creative “snow farming.” Over the years they have created
“inventory areas” for stockpiling snow so it can be moved to
problem areas when needed. Every summer the Mad River Glen
mountain operations team spends a great deal of time grooming
and manicuring the trails, drainage ditches and culverts so that
the bare minimum amount of snow is necessary to provide skiing.
As you can see, Mad River Glen operates with a very different
philosophy and this philosophy has served the mountain well for
over 65 years. The fact is that Mad River Glen is not for everyone
- but there are plenty of skiers who understand, appreciate and
love the experience Mad River Glen does provide. Certainly,
challenges lie ahead for America’s only skier-owned mountain.
Future changes are inevitable, but these changes will be made
judiciously with an eye toward sustainability and adherence to
Mad River Glen’s ethos and unique heritage.
Snowmaking the
Mad River Glen Way
Snowmaking is the most obvious example of what separates
Mad River Glen from the rest of the industry. The snowmaking
system is limited not because Mad River skiers don’t like
snowmaking but because there has always been precious little
water available to do more. Believe it or not, Mad River was at the
forefront of snowmaking back in the 1970’s and would likely have
increased output if additional water had been available. Instead,
Mad River made do with what it had. As the industry changed
over the years and became more reliant on snowmaking, Mad
River’s lack of it helped to set the mountain apart. The benefit
of this historical happenstance is that today Mad River Glen is
one of the last bastions of natural snow skiing in New England.
Generations of skiers have grown up without an appreciation for
the feel of real snow, that is, until they come to Mad River Glen for
the first time and come to understand what Mad River aficionados
already know: there’s nothing quite like the real thing! The skierowners appreciate natural snow so much that the Co-op’s bylaws
explicitly restrict snowmaking above the elevation of 2,300 feet.
Grooming Philosophy
Many people think that Mad River limits grooming because
Mad River skiers don’t like it— but that simply isn’t true. Many
a Mad River skier loves screaming down freshly groomed trails.
But Mad River Glen deals predominantly with natural snow and,
at times, a limited amount of it. Each time a trail is groomed,
the snow becomes denser and more likely to turn to ice. With
natural snow, you get much better surface conditions when it is
groomed less often. Thus, the trail grooming list is rotated from
night to night. Skiers may not be arcing turns on corduroy all the
time but the skiing surface generally remains far better than it
would be otherwise.

Co-op Looks to Preserve Our Paradise
Preserve It If You Can!
ore than 65 years ago, Roland Palmedo founded Mad River Glen on the premise that "…a ski area
is not just a place of business, a mountain amusement park, as it were. Instead it is a winter
community whose members, both skiers and area personnel, are dedicated to the enjoyment of
the sport." These words have proven prophetic, as Mad River Glen has achieved wide renown and built a
strong community over the years by staying true to Roland’s vision and forging a path uniquely different from
the rest of the ski industry. With its pristine, hand-cut trails, family-oriented community and challenging
natural terrain, Mad River Glen has inspired extraordinary loyalty and devotion from generations of skiers.
Despite the achievements of the cooperative, Mad River Glen faces a number of growing challenges in
the coming years. The ski industry is inherently volatile as it is subject to unpredictable weather, climate
change, increasing operating costs and uncertain profits. Although the Cooperative has addressed the critical
deferred maintenance that it inherited, many capital assets and systems are nearing the end of their life
expectancy. Crowded and inadequate facilities are making it increasingly difficult for the mountain to serve
its customers properly and carry out its mission in a sustainable manner. In keeping with the mission to
preserve a mountain community and values, Mad River cannot rely upon real estate development and other
commercial expansion in order to supplement operating revenue. Although the Cooperative has achieved
financial stability in its first two decades, the modest annual operating income is not adequate to meet
Mad River’s essential capital needs.
Today, Mad River has reached an important crossroads. In order to continue its history of success, provide
a high level of service and properly meet its mission, in the coming decade the cooperative will need to
address a large number of major capital needs.
M
These urgent needs include:
Preserving the mountain by providing funds for essential lift maintenance and
improvements, mountain maintenance and trail enhancements and updates to
snowmaking infrastructure
Enhancing skier safety through a much-needed new ski patrol building
Supporting children’s programs by expanding facilities that currently limit growth
Preserving the community through improvements to the historic Basebox, a focal point
of the mountain and our community
Ensuring future financial stability by reducing energy costs, creating opportunities for
enhancing operating revenue and establishing an endowment for mountain preservation
The Co-op’s experience with the Single Chair Capital Campaign proved to us that another major philanthropic
campaign might provide the necessary financial resources to address these key needs and allow Mad River
Glen to thrive in the years ahead. With the benefit of in-depth analysis, Mad River Glen has determined
that a capital campaign will be a key component in meeting the Co-op’s future needs. The Mad River Glen
community will be hearing more about this campaign in the near future.

Learn the Turn at MRG
Telemark Programs
ad River Glen has been at the epicenter of Telemark skiing in
New England since the very beginning. In the 1940’s Roland
Palmedo, MRG’s founder, skinned up to explore the terrain
then laid out the trail network on equipment that was not dissimilar to
modern Telemark and backcountry gear. Attracted by uncrowded trails,
natural snow, great tree skiing and a down-home community, Mad River
Glen has become America’s defacto “Telemark Mecca.” Whether you are
a “newbie” who wants to “Learn the Turn” or an experienced Tele-skier
trying to break through to the next level, the Mad River Glen Ski School

ad River Glen tends to attract
some pretty accomplished skiers
so it stands to reason that when
these folks “go forth and multiply,” their
progeny tend to ski pretty well themselves.
That being said, genetics can only take
a young skier so far. If they are going to
become the next generation of rippers,
young skiers need great coaching, superior
terrain, buddies to push each other and
the ability to set goals. Mad River Glen’s
youth programs have been doing just that
for generations. The little ones start out as
Rockin’ Robins, Chipmunks and Panthers,
then progress to the Devo Team. From there
many choose between the MRG Freeskiing

the ski-racing path. Whichever path they
choose, the way has been paved for them by
some incredibly successful alumni.

Co-op Turns 20
ad River Glen’s famously cantankerous former owner, Betsy
Pratt, has often been referred to as a maverick. In 1988 she
declared that she would rather shut down the ski area than sell
to anyone other than the skiers who loved and appreciated the mountain.
In an age when the ski industry was rapidly consolidating, the idea of
creating a vehicle for the mountain’s fervent loyalists to purchase their ski
area was considered by many to be a fantasy. But twenty years ago that
is exactly what happened at Mad River Glen when it became America’s
first and only cooperatively owned ski area.
M
Seven years later, after a couple of fitful attempts to sell the mountain
to the skiers, Betsy decided on the concept of cooperative ownership for
Mad River Glen. She hired an attorney with legal expertise in co-ops to
draw up the by-laws and helped form a board of trustees to negotiate on
behalf of the prospective shareholders. A selling price of $2.5 million
was determined, a mutually acceptable deal was worked out, a massive
volunteer effort began and shares began to be sold in the summer of
1995. By late autumn 1,000 shares had been sold and Betsy agreed to
close the deal even though there weren’t enough shares sold to pay the
full price. She offered the fledgling skier-owners a five year, interest free
note to give them time to sell the balance of the shares and to provide
them with start-up capital. The deal was finalized on December 5, 1995
and the mountain opened two days later after an emotional ribbon cutting
ceremony interrupted by heavy snow squalls. The rest is history.
Over the past two decades the Mad River Glen Cooperative has
proved all the nay-sayers (and there were a lot of them) wrong and is an
24

unqualified success. The litany of milestones the co-op has accomplished
is truly remarkable:
The co-op found its footing and created the process for managing the
very first skier-owned mountain.
Years of deferred maintenance were addressed.
Mad River Glen re-opened only a week after the devastating 1998
Ice Storm, demonstrating the resiliency and drive of the Mad River
Glen community.
The Sunnyside Double was refurbished.
In 1999 the 1,667th share was sold, enabling the mountain to burn
the mortgage early.
In 2000 the Co-op reached the original goal of selling 2,000 shares.
In 2008 “Old Faithful,” Mad River Glen’s Single Chair, underwent a
$1.8 million historic restoration that was funded entirely by donations
from the Mad River Glen community.
Since its founding, the Mad River Glen Cooperative has plowed over
$5 million back into the mountain’s infrastructure.

As the Mad River Glen Cooperative looks to its future it does so
in a proactive way and from a position of strength. The mountain’s
infrastructure has never looked better; it has negligible debt and has
finished “in the black” in 15 of the first 19 seasons. That being said,
the challenges for Mad River Glen going forward are very real and will
need hard work, dedication and creative thinking from the entire co-op
community to ensure the long-term stability of the mountain and enable
Mad River Glen to offer future generations the unique ski experience the
Co-op is dedicated to protecting and preserving.

“My take is that Co-op members bought MRG shares

hen Mad River Glen was purchased “by
the skiers” in 1995, making it America’s
first and only cooperatively-owned ski area,
the future success of the endeavor was definitely not
a forgone conclusion. While the Co-op has certainly
been a tremendous success with tremendous ongoing
opportunities, we are well aware that we are also facing
big challenges.

MRG Trail Map
ad River Glen is like no other ski area in
North America. The mountain is famous
for its legendary expert terrain, picturesque and varied novice and intermediate trails
and of course, the famous Single Chair lift. The
extensive trail system follows the natural contours
of General Stark Mountain to a single base area,
making it easy for skiers of different abilities to
ski together. An average of nearly 250 inches of
natural snow each year combines with uncrowded
slopes and a pristine mountain environment to
create the unique Mad River Glen ski experience.
M
Novices can ski Mad River Glen. In fact, with
a great ski school, the Callie’s Corner handle
tow and Birdland, there are few better places
to learn and improve. To find Birdland, ride the
Sunnyside Chair from the base area and follow
the “easiest” signs to Fox and then Easy Way
over to the “Birdland” novice area. Once in
Birdland, explore trails like Duck and Lark, then
follow the green circles marking the easiest way
down and you will discover what makes Mad
River Glen’s natural snow skiing so special.
Mad River Glen offers a lifetime of interesting
intermediate skiing. You can ski off any of the
lifts; just look for the “More Difficult” signs.
Quacky, from the top of the Sunnyside Chair, is
an all-time Mad River favorite, combining rolling
terrain, tree islands, moguls and groomed areas.
Enter Quacky II from Fox to avoid the moguls at
the top. Quacky leads to Porcupine, a popular
cruising trail, Bunny and a number of other
enticing runs. Off the Single Chair, Antelope to
Catamount is the ultimate intermediate
experience offering phenomenal views and an
intriguing path down the mountain.
Intermediates who want to try out some moguls
should check out lower Periwinkle and the
ungroomed “jug handles” on Upper Antelope.
Expert Skiers
Mad River Glen is home to the most
challenging skiing in the East, bar none. Natural
snow, legendary bumps and narrow gladed
trails create a true test of a skier’s ability. If
you’re looking for a challenge, you’ll find it off
the Single Chair. Mogul skiers love showing
off on Chute, while Fall Line, Lift Line, and
of course, Paradise, are famous for their steep
and technical terrain. The Sunnyside Double
Chair will take you to steeper bump trails like
Slalom Hill, Canyon and Gazelle. But why limit
yourself? Ski the whole mountain; develop your
own favorites and don’t miss the best woods
skiing you’ll ever find.
Woods Skiing Policy
No one loves and appreciates woods skiing more
than Mad River Glen. Please enjoy this unique
aspect of the Mad River Glen ski experience by
following our common-sense policies;

Terry’s philosophy for the Mad River Ski School is simple. The
overriding goal is to teach people to enjoy skiing to its fullest
by skiing more efficiently, and to have fun. Mad River Glen
madriverglen.com
instructors teach skiers to use the mountain to their advantage to
improve their technique and put less stress on their bodies. They
are encouraged to listen to the skier’s goals and work with each
individual’s strengths and weaknesses. Skiers always come away
from their lessons with helpful tips so they can continue improving
their skiing long after the lesson. “We help people discover how it
feels when it’s done right, so they will know when they are doing
it right on their own,” explains Terry.
The combination of its legendary terrain, natural snow conditions
and low skier density make Mad River Glen the perfect place for
skiers to improve their “mountain skiing” skills. A place where you
can learn how to enjoy a variety of terrain, pitches and conditions.
Because at Mad River Glen we work with what nature gives us,
we can teach our skiers how to enjoy all the different forms snow
can take: powder, moguls, ice, corn and everything in between.
From beginners to experts, toddlers to seniors, the Mad River Glen
Ski School will help you get more out of your experience on the
mountain.

“The Best Place to Grow Up Skiing”
Kids Ski School
have grown up in the Mad River Valley and I have grown up at Mad River
Glen. I began skiing at MRG when I was around seven years old, so this
place has been a part of who I am for nearly two-thirds of my life.
I
Mad River Glen’s ski school was something I looked forward to every
weekend as a student, and then later as an instructor. The mountain’s
weekend ski programs are truly unique. The ski school is very welcoming,
mirroring the warmth one receives from the rest of the mountain, despite the
negative temperatures and vagaries of the conditions. Children ski with the
same coach for the whole season, allowing for friendships to be established
within ski groups as well as strong connections to be made between the
children and their coaches. We were always taught that the goal is for
children to develop a passion for skiing, while learning to do so in a safe and
adventurous way. You definitely won’t find this at your typical mountain.
Mad River Glen provides challenging, but level-appropriate terrain for
all skiers. The conditions are natural, and those who learn here, learn to
ski on anything mother nature throws their way. Through the ice, slush and
(sometimes) powder, ski groups work as a team to find new and creative ways
to conquer General Stark Mountain.
Growing up in the ski school, I never imagined that I would have the
opportunity to see what makes the program so impressive from the other
side. Becoming a ski instructor here was definitely one of the more rewarding
things I have done in my life. What better place to have my first job than
where I grew up and learned to ski myself. In doing so, I learned to fully
comprehend the dedication the instructors put into making sure that I always
had a positive experience during my years in the program. It’s amazing to say
that my time at Mad River Glen seems like nothing in comparison to those
who have been teaching here for 20 or more years. These are the people who
inspired me to grow, learn, and to continue my skiing career as a coach. I
invite you to expose your children to Mad River Glen’s amazing programs and
give them the same opportunities I was so fortunate to have. I can’t imagine
a better place to grow up skiing than at Mad River Glen.

speed, and turning in both directions.
The Chipmunks – Ages 4 to 7

on skis and are able to ride the lifts. The focus at this level
is developing the basic skiing skills while enjoying the
camaraderie of skiing with friends.
The Panthers - Ages 7 and Up
The Panthers are for kids who want to have fun skiing
with their friends in a supervised and safe environment.
The program offers kids an opportunity to explore Mad
River’s terrain and improve their skiing as they build lasting
friendships.
NEW! Development Team – Ages 7 and Up
This new program is a collaboration of the Ski School and the
Junior Race Program. It is designed for kids who are not quite
ready to commit to freestyle or racing and want to explore all
their options. It’s for all mountain skiers looking to improve
their skiing, carve better, ski the woods, run some gates and
bang the bumps. Kids in this program must be able to ride
the Single Chair on their own.
The Freestyle Team - Ages 7 and Up
Mad River Glen’s top-rated moguls make it a perfect place for
kids to rip it up! The team skis under the supervision of our
expert coaching staff. The focus is on developing skills while
attacking ALL of Mad River’s legendary terrain. A key goal
of the program is for the kids to compete in freestyle events
throughout the season. The Freestyle Team runs from 9:30 to
2:30 each day.
Junior Race Program – Ages 7 and up
Challenging terrain and top notch coaching make Mad River
Glen an ideal place for youngsters to learn racing skills,
have fun and become better skiers. The program begins
with dryland training in the fall and runs all season long on
weekend and holidays from 9 AM to 3 PM.
Program Class Size
In all of our season-long kids programs our specially trained
instructors work with the children in small groups of no more than
6. (The Rockin’ Robins group is always limited to 3 children per
instructor.) In this way, we can ensure that your child is developing
their skiing in a fun and safe atmosphere.

School/Homeschool Programs
Bring your students to the slopes of Mad
River Glen to discover the unique ecology of
the Alpine environment in winter and spring.
We offer custom snowshoe treks for school
groups of all ages that align with the Next
Generation Science Standards.
Mad River Glen’s skier-owners are truly committed to preserving not
only the unique ski experience Mad River Glen offers, but also the
mountain ecosystem under the Co-op’s stewardship. “Protecting the
mountain ecosystem involves maintaining a healthy forest, managing
the wildlife habitat, monitoring the watershed, and minimizing the
environmental impact of the ski area operations,” says Sean Lawson,
Mad River’s Naturalist Program Director. “The real key to our success
has been our ability to educate and inform the public about the impact
the ski area has on the alpine environment through the Naturalist
Programs.” The National Ski Areas Association recently recognized
the success of Mad River Glen’s effort with the Silver Eagle Award for
Environmental Education.
Mad River’s naturalist programs have proven popular with skiers and
non-skiers alike. Fun and educational programs are scheduled yearround to give visitors another way to enjoy the outdoors while they
learn about Mad River’s mountain ecology. They range from full-moon
snowshoe treks to wildlife tracking workshops, from bird watching
excursions to a junior naturalist program, and from wilderness crosscountry ski tours to wildflower walks and foliage hikes.
Custom programs are also available and can be tailored to the
specific needs of any groups. Mad River Glen’s Naturalist Programs
have been offered to groups from Elderhostel, Vermont Country Walkers,
school groups, and clubs. These programs can also
be incorporated with adventure activities such as
rock climbing, mountain biking, canoeing, snow
shoeing and cross-country skiing. A complete
calendar of Mad River Glen’s environmental
programs is available on Mad River’s website at
madriverglen.com.

Discover The Mad River Valley
Original Lodges Continue to Thrive
The Perkins - Millbrook Inn
Ulla Lodge – Hyde Away Inn
After hearing about plans for a new ski area in Vermont, newlyweds
Ginny and Henry Perkins, a 10th Mountain Division ski trooper,
packed up their wood-paneled station wagon and left Boston for
the Mad River Valley. They began the arduous task of converting a
farmhouse into a ski lodge, which they opened in 1948. Ginny took
many photos and kept detailed notes leaving behind an amazing
record of the reconstruction of the inn and the development up at
Mad River Glen. In 1979 Joan and Thom Gorman purchased the inn
with a goal of creating a lifestyle that allowed them to fulfill their
dream of running a seasonal business and enabled them to satisfy
their passion for travel.
In 1948 a 10th Mountain Division veteran recovering from polio
decided to purchase a dilapidated old farmhouse and barn, envisioning
turning it into a popular place for young skiers to stay when skiing at
the nascent ski area up the road. Sewall Williams placed ads in Ivy
League magazines saying, “Snow or no snow, Ulla’s the place to go,
House Party atmosphere.” He charged $6 a night with 2 meals for a
dorm room and $12 for one of the 2 private rooms. Due to a dearth
of snow in the first few years, Sewall was forced to sell the inn, in
1952, to Damon Gadd, who was in the midst of building a new ski
area, Sugarbush. The Ulla Lodge went through a few incarnations
over the decades before being purchased by Bruce Hyde in the late
1980’s who re-christened it as The Hyde Away.
The Clark’s - Mountain View Lodge
The inn was built as a farmhouse circa 1826. In 1946 Allen and
Nancy Clark bought it - without electricity, running water or central
heat- and converted it to The Clark’s Ski Lodge, one of the original
lodging options for skiers flocking to the slopes of the new ski area
in town, Mad River. Fred and Suzy Spencer met in college at the
University of Denver and moved east to manage The Bagatelle
(now the Waitsfield Inn) and after only a year, in 1978 decided to
purchase what is now known as The Mountain View Inn. Over the
ensuing decades they have raised two boys at the inn and have
hosted countless Mad River skiers.
Tucker Hill Inn
Mad River Barn
The Mad River Barn has been a fixture in the Mad River Valley
for many years. It began its commercial operation as a bunkhouse
for the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s when what is now
Route 17 was being roughed in. When Mad River Glen opened, Les
and Alice Billings converted it to an inn. During the 1970’s, the
owners of the Mad River Glen Corporation acquired “The Barn.”
Betsy Pratt, Mad River’s principal shareholder, took over operations
of the Barn following her husband’s passing, and ran it until 2012,
when she sold it to Andrew and Heather Lynds. Since taking over
ownership the Lynds have embarked on a transformational restoration
of the entire property, which has reinvigorated the popular ski lodge.
When Mad River Glen was opened,
Ann and Frances Martin decided to
move up from Boston and build the
first purpose-built ski lodge in town.
They constructed a cozy, rustic lodge
with large fieldstone fireplaces, but that
wasn’t all. They also installed a rope tow
on the slope behind the inn. The 1949
Mad River Glen Housing List described it
as, “Supplementing the Mad River Glen
Aerial Chair Lift is the new Tucker Hill
Lodge and Ski Tow… located 3 miles
below Mad River Glen. A northeast slope
for beginners and intermediates is served
by a gasoline-operated rope tow 77 feet
in length with a vertical descent of 150
feet… The slope is interspersed with trees
for windbreaks and has a variety of choice
runs with grades from 10 to 25 degrees.”

The Skinny on Snowboarding
Mad River Glen ‑ General Store
Despite Mad River
Glen’s ban on
snowboards you will
occasionally see a
few “poaching” the
legendary terrain.

The General Store
espite the fact that snowboarders now account
for 25-30% of all lift tickets sold in the Unites
States, don’t bet that Mad River Glen will lift its
ban on snowboards anytime soon. While the percentage of
tickets purchased by snowboarders is steadily growing,
many question how a ski area can exclude this growing
market. Mad River Glen’s skier-owners (it is America’s
only cooperatively owned mountain) believe there are
enough skiing purists to carve out a viable market niche.
Recent results confirmed the theory. “Since the co-op took
over ownership of the mountain in 1995 we have shown
steady growth across the board,” said Marketing Director,
Eric Friedman. “We are fortunate that there is a growing
number of skiers seeking the kind of experience that we
offer. Sure, we might see a spike in revenues if we allowed
snowboards, but money is not our overriding concern;
D
40

protecting and preserving our unique ski experience is
what our owners clearly want.”
Many people don’t realize that Mad River actually did
allow snowboards early in the history of snowboarding.
Betsy Pratt, Mad River’s previous owner, was friendly to
snowboards, but ran into safety issues on Mad River Glen’s
main lift, a 1948 Single Chair. They were restricted from
the Single and then, after a now legendary confrontation
between Betsy and some local riders, she decided to ban
snowboards completely. When the Co-op took over the
mountain the shareholders voted on the issue with more
than 75% voting to maintain the snowboarding ban. “We
want to make clear that there is no animosity towards
snowboarders. The ski industry is very competitive and
our ownership believes that the snowboarding policy is
the best course for Mad River Glen,” explains Friedman.
The reasons for the snowboarding ban vary depending
on who you talk to. Some say it would ruin Mad River’s
unique character. “Our Single Chair, the cooperative
ownership, the natural snow skiing, the non-commercial
atmosphere, and the skiers-only policy are what make Mad
River Glen special. We don’t want to end up being like
every other ski area,” said Mad River shareholder Mary
Gallicano. Others believe that snowboarder would ruin
the legendary moguls, while still others feel that they
would scrape the natural snow off Mad River Glen’s sinewy
trails. Whatever the reason, it is unlikely that there will be
snowboarding at Mad River Glen any time soon. The only
way the policy can change is if a two-thirds majority of
the shareholders vote to change it. Alta and Deer Valley
in Utah, and Taos in New Mexico are the only other areas
in North America that do not allow snowboards.

About the Co-op
Have an Impact on Mad River’s Future
Mad River Glen became one of Vermont’s first major
ski areas when the Single Chair began carrying skiers
to the top of General Stark Mountain in 1949. From the
very beginning, Mad River Glen has been unique, a place
where skiing is a sport not an industry, working with nature
not against it. Mad River Glen began a new era in 1995
when its skiers came together to form the Mad River Glen
Cooperative. The Cooperative works to fulfill a simple mission:
As part of the Cooperative, you have a voice in
decisions through your vote on major issues and by
electing representatives to the Board of Trustees.
“… to forever protect the classic Mad River Glen
skiing experience by preserving low skier density, natural
terrain and forests, varied trail character, and friendly
community atmosphere for the benefit of shareholders,
area personnel and patrons.”

Each shareholder brings the Cooperative one step closer to
the goal of preserving and protecting Mad River Glen forever.
Purchasing a share of the Mad River Glen Cooperative for
yourself, your children, and your grandchildren means leaving
a special legacy for future generations.

Help make important capital
projects possible.
To maintain the ski area’s infrastructure and ensure
its long-term viability share sales are critical. Funding
for these projects comes from share sales and operating
income, so every new share sold helps make these
projects possible.
Most importantly, Cooperative ownership gives you
the feeling that you are a part of something specialMad River Glen.
What does it cost?
A share in the Mad River Cooperative costs $2,000.
Shares may be purchased through a single payment
or in monthly installments of $50 with a $150 down
payment. The installment option enables anyone who
loves and appreciates Mad River to become an owner.
The only other cost is the annual advance purchase
requirement (APR) of $200. Since advance purchases
may be applied to nearly every product and service on
the mountain it does not represent an additional expense
for most shareholders.
Shareholders receive 15% discounts on season passes
and day tickets.
