I am pleased to join in celebrating your 25th anniversary.
In America, history is not only made by presidents and generals.
Change often comes when caring and engaged individuals join
together to build a brighter, stronger future for themselves and for
the generations to come.
For years, you have carried forward a proud tradition. By daring to
imagine the world as it could be and working tirelessly to realize
that vision, you are helping America reach a better tomorrow.
Congratulations on your anniversary. As you reflect on your years
of service to your community, I hope you take pride in what you
have achieved. I wish you all the best in the years ahead.
what a few of our alumni have to say (1)
Kahaya Adams, 34, used the confidence
she developed in Performing Stars to earn a
degree in Nursing and Psychology from
College of Marin and Paine College, Augusta, Ga., as well as receiving a certificate
in Wedding Planning and a Certified Nursing Assistant license through the American
Red Cross. Her two sons are currently in
Performing Stars, performing with Andre
Thierry throughout the Bay Area -The
Zydeco Boyz. She has much love for
Ms. Gaston and is proud to be a multigenerational Performing Stars family.
Maude Elizabeth Akognon, 25, fondly
remembers the people of Performing Stars,
especially Felecia and Ruby, who took great
care of her. She felt a part of something and
learned patience, and that “practice makes
perfect.” Maude completed a degree in
Nursing at Dominican University.
Teyonna Allen, 28: “Performing Stars not
only taught me how to have a lot of selfconfidence, but to care about others as well.
It has inspired me to treat young ladies with
the same respect that I was given and if need
be, mentor them and help them to become
beautiful young women just as I was taught
to be…and how to be a better person.” She
graduated from Intelli Tec College in Grand
Junction, Colorado, and is working as a
quality assurance specialist for AT&T.
Mariah Ashby, 24, has received an A.A.
degree at the nursing program at College of
Marin and states the skills she acquired
while with Performing Stars have helped her
be comfortable on stage and doing class presentations. She is employed at Women Helping All People.
Evard Auxilla, aka “Avar The Star,” 34, is
now a professional recording artist in Texas,
and fondly remembers having a lot of fun in
many programs within Performing Stars and
in addition, they “made me an honest law
abiding citizen…it helped me understand
that there were different roads I can take in
life and helped me to choose which road I
would like to take.”
Chaeta Baker, 32, remembers meeting
many new people outside of her community and having new experiences
with Performing Stars, allowing her to
learn what she was truly good at. She
attended American River College in
Sacramento and now works full time as
a Special Education Para Professional
at Hall Middle School in Larkspur. She
also completed Miss Marty’s School of
Beauty in San Francisco, and wants to
study fashion design and start a personal “make-over” business.
Raina Baker, 34, was in the first
group of dance students who attended
the Marin Ballet scholarship program
in 1990. She also participated in dance
and theater classes, which helped her
overcome her shyness and express herself. Raina used her skills throughout
the years by expressing herself more
artistically and stepping out of her
comfort zone. Raina credits Performing
Stars with helping her realize her talent, use her talent to help others, and
learn how to serve her community.
That’s why she decided to work with
children and has been a teacher assistant at Bayside Elementary School and
a teacher aide at Southern Marin Boys
& Girls Club and Manzanita Childcare
Center. “Performing Stars is positive, it
motivates youth to use their talents and
gain confidence.”
Brittany Battle, 27, recognizes Performing Stars as a very good program
for children. Brittany is a supervisor at
Whole Foods Market and working to
become an assistant manager. She is
currently attending College of Marin
studying Administration of Justice.

what a few of our alumni have to say (2)
Almendra Benvenuto, 22, remembers coming out of her shell and gaining confidence
with Performing Stars, allowing her to grow
outside her comfort zone. She is currently
attending College of Marin, studying business and psychology.
Kaleybra Block, 34, and her sister were two
of the very first participants 25 years ago, in
the newly evolving Performing Stars. Being
quite shy, she now feels the acting program
impacted her the most because it helped her
open up, though she was also active in ballet
and baton twirling. After obtaining her A.A.
in Culinary Arts from Santa Rosa Junior
College as well as a certificate in Baking
and Pastry, Kaleybra placed her own 2 children in some of the same programs. She
hopes that in the future, there will be additional activities specifically for boys as a
part of a program that has been a constant
for generations in her life. She works as an
Assisted Living Counselor.
Michael Bradley, 37, utilized his time with
Performing Stars to actively enhance and
complement his martial arts studies and has
since excelled in martial arts. While involved
with Performing Stars, he says he made new
friends, learned new skills and his school
work improved a lot.
Rayiesha Breaux, 28, remembers how
dance and baton twirling with Performing
Stars changed her life by giving her confidence, manners and social skills resulting in
the belief that she could achieve whatever
she put her mind to. Rayiesha has completed
a B.A. in Political Science from San Francisco State University, has worked as a
Legal Assistant, and presently assists in the
administration of Performing Stars where
her 2 little girls participate.
Sharae Breaux, 30, remembers Performing
Stars greatly helping her with her social
skills and enhancing her confidence,
prompting her out of extreme shyness.
04
Sharae is employed full-time as an assistant
manager at CVS Pharmacy and has been
awarded Employee of the Month and Emerging Leader Award.
Daaimah Brown, 22, feels Performing Stars
provided a cultural experience she would not
have had otherwise. “I have used the skills I
learned with Performing Stars in networking, presentations, meeting new people and
staying involved in my community.” She is
currently working full-time as a Customer
Service Representative for Alorica and is
pursuing African Studies in college.
Rachael Brown, 30, was an original member of the “Black Swan Dance Troup,” the
precursor of Performing Stars. Her son is
following her in Performing Stars. She is
employed full-time as a professional driver
for senior citizens at the Marin City Community Services District. She believes Performing Stars is an opportunity for children
to improve their lives and futures.
Tito Caramanica, 33: “Performing stars is
the best thing that ever happened to me. I
learned a lot and how to communicate with
others…we were like a big family.” He says
it helped him finish school and become a
better person. Tito is now a full-time produce clerk at Walmart and loves to draw
and sketch in his spare time.
Luz Caramanica-Corbin, 31, is actively
pursuing a college business degree and says
Performing Stars offered her life skills such
as manners, time management and self control which she utilizes every day. She has an
A.A. degree in Business and is employed at
Walmart. She is presently working as a care
provider.
Cordell Coleman, 15, states he “had a great
experience with Performing Stars” and says
he is extremely grateful for the program.
Cordell attended Marin Theater Company
what a few of our alumni have to say (3)
via their scholarship program and landed
many lead roles in their plays. Cordell remembers most portraying General Benjamin
Davis in a play produced by the Marin
Shakespeare Company when the Tuskegee
Airmen came to Marin City. This was a
proud moment because his great grandfather
was one of the original Tuskegee Airmen during the 1940’s.
Denicia Coleman, 33, recognizes Performing Stars as a central experience in the development of her authentic identity, which she
has carried forward into adulthood. She
earned a B.A. in Psychology from Dominican University, an M.A. in Special Education from Ashford University, and works as
a Special Education Specialist/Teacher. She
also remains interested in various other aspects of art in her personal life, such as choreography, spoken word and self-expression
with color. She would love to see Performing Stars expanded into a performing arts
academy.
Jupiter Collins, 26, made new friends and
learned new skills during his time with Performing Stars. He works at Massage Envy.
Jupiter loves acting and has performed in
several theater plays at College of Marin.
Jupiter is also a self-taught visual artist.
Mini-imah Cook, 20, states that Performing
Stars gives children the supportive push they
may need to awaken to the concept of being
whomever they choose to be, and to feel the
confidence that they can reach the goals they
set for themselves. They also learn their heritage and about the people who have paved
the way for them. One of the most important
skills she learned was good manners, and
she is often complimented on being polite
and sweet. She is working as a preschool
teacher and plans on getting a teaching credential, but is not giving up on her dream of
becoming an actress. She is currently enrolled
in Barbizon Modeling and Acting School.
Janelle Dent, 26, recognizes the multiple
life skills she developed with Performing
Stars including personal responsibility, communication, and social responsibility. “The
diversity of Performing Stars helps you be a
better person not only inside but a better person to all of the people you meet throughout
your life.” She has earned numerous certifications: Short Hand Reporter and Transcriber from College of Marin; Bartending
from San Francisco School of Bartending;
Make-up Artist from Glam Lab in San Francisco and works as a collections supervisor.
Coleen Dieu, 31, is a Sales and Service
Specialist for Bank of America and Eyewear
Consultant at LensCrafters. Colleen was in
the second group of students who received a
scholarship to attend the Marin Ballet Center. Coleen believes she uses the respect for
others and the focus and devotion she learned
from Performing Stars whenever she starts a
new project or activity. “I remember receiving my Performing Stars of Marin recognition rewards in front of my friends and feeling so proud to be a part of this organization.
I still have my rewards hanging on my wall.
Thank you for all those memories.”
Alexzandria Douglas, 22, was with Performing Stars from age 3 to 13, during
which time she participated in ballet, modern
dance, theater, hip hop, baton twirling,
music programs and field trips. Not only did
Alexzandria gain skills in music and dance,
but her grades improved a lot because of the
confidence and self-esteem she gained, which
also helped her learn to get along with other
people. She has utilized these skills to complete an A.A. degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences from Santa Rosa Junior College
and gain part-time employment as a receptionist.
Garland Duhe, 24, is a Marin City Recreation Director. He remembers: “Drill team
helped me the most, it gave me structure, a
sense of pride and self-confidence as a child.
05
what a few of our alumni have to say (4)
Also helped to build many friendships.” He
completed a dental assisting program at College of Marin and plans to fulfill his career
goal of being a dentist.
Lynette Raeann Egenlauf, 26, says, “Performing Stars taught me a good work ethic
and to finish anything that I started.” She
has obtained her A.A. in Behavioral Science
and Kinesiology from College of Marin
and works in retail at Marshall’s. She also
has been employed part-time as Head Coach
Women’s Freshman Basketball, Marin
Catholic; Assistant Coach Women’s Varsity
Softball, Novato High School; and Assistant
Women’s Basketball Coach, College of Marin.
She also conducts private sports clinics.
Elise Fincher, 31, is an assistant manager at
Forever 21 & Claire’s retail stores in Northgate Mall. “I have used a lot I learned at
Performing Stars like the value of hard work
and knowing that nothing is impossible if
you are willing to put time and effort into
whatever you do.”
Tiffany Fincher, 34, is employed full time
as a scheduler and is pursuing a career in
Clinical and Administrative Medical Assistance. She loves to sing and passes down to
her daughter what she learned in Performing
Stars. “It builds character and creates structure for youth that may otherwise be looking
to false role models. There should be more
programs like this…”
Jania Fusilier, 35, remembers that the performance arts were a complete outlet for
her physically and that the combination of
music, movement and fashion helped her
find her inner artist and kept her out of trouble. As a pre-school teacher and a mother of
five, she continually models the skills she
cultivated while with Performing Stars - creative thinking, cooperation, tact, and speaking clearly. Jania wishes there had been
more programs for older youth so she could
have continued her participation and hopes
06
such programs can still be created. She is
presently a student at College of Marin as
well as a songwriter and recording artist,
costume designer and fine artist.
Pashia L Greene, 34, says that Performing
Stars built the good character she has. “The
programs gave me positive self awareness
and focus that brought about my ability to
navigate in life with confidence and flexibility.” She has also learned self-expression
and to work with others in a team/group setting, which she uses in every day life. “It’s
an awesome program” and she hopes it can
develop a teen component to guide adolescents through their sensitive and rocky years.
Pasha is an Administrative Assistant working on a degree in Business Management
and Administration.
Philippe V. Haas, 34, is a full time artist
and proprietor of a ceramics studio. Phillipe
made life-long friendships in photography
classes with Performing Stars and feels the
significance of learning about composition
has helped him tremendously as an artist.
Phillipe is most proud of how he created
representations of the waterfront lifestyles
and the Gates Houseboats in Sausalito
where he grew up. Phillipe also was a
regular participant in the Italian Street
Painting Festival.
Cerella Hampton, 26, learned to collaborate with people from many different backgrounds. “I attended Marin Ballet Company
for about 5 years and it was there I gained
confidence, structure, discipline, the rewards
of hard work, and great posture.” She earned
an A.A. in Computer Networking and Information Technology from City College of
San Francisco and works as a Recreational
Aide at Marin City Community Services
District.
Cynthia Hampton, 25: “Performing Stars
made me feel like a star! Because of this
program, at an early age I was granted many
different opportunities I otherwise would not
what a few of our alumni have to say (5)
have been able to have. I will always hold
Performing Stars as a huge influence on the
woman I became today.” She gained an
early understanding of body movement and
how important it is to exercise and be healthy.
Cynthia is now a File Management and
Records Coordinator for the law firm of
Thompson, Welch, Stroke and Gilbert and
is studying business administration at College of Marin, transferring to Cal State in
January 2016.
Zabrianna Harrell, 26, was with the performing arts programs in Performing Stars
from age 3 to age 9 and used the focus and
balance she developed in ballet later in basketball. She made new friends, gained selfesteem and her grades improved a lot. She
says she wouldn’t change one thing about
Performing Stars.
Nichelle Haynes, 28, is a licensed Cosmetologist and Esthetician. She received her
certificate from the Milan Institute of Cosmetology in Fairfield, CA. Nichelle feels
“everyday” that she utilizes many skills she
acquired from Performing Stars, including
leadership, teamwork, manners, etiquette
and respect. Nichelle has her own business,
Makeup by Mayhem, and is in demand for
weddings and high school proms.
Michael Cardenas Huaman, 21, is a student at Humboldt State University studying
psychology. He was in Performing Stars
from age 8 to 12. He made new friends,
learned new skills, including how to get
along with people, and his grades improved
a lot. He says the sailing classes helped him
the most as he got to explore the bay and
gain new knowledge about his surroundings.
“Performing Stars is unlike any other. When
you're with a group of wonderful people all
having the same desires and goals, that’s
what Performing Stars is all about. Not just
learning how to shine but learning how to
shine with others and sharing that light.”
D’George Hines, 25, is the founder of DH
Production Crew, a youth music ministry
and booking agency for various gospel
artists. He is still involved in music as a
gospel musician, and credits his time in Performing Stars with helping him develop his
musical skills as well as improving his
grades a lot, making him feel better about
himself and gaining experiences outside his
community.
Malachia Hoover, 25, has obtained her B.S.
in Cell and Molecular Biology from Cal
State Northridge. “Although over ten years
ago, I will never forget the first time I learned
how to twirl a baton. We performed our
recital on stage in front of a large audience,
and it gave me confidence at a young age to
never be scared to showcase my talent! I still
have that confidence to perform or talk in
front of large groups and to shine!”
Khari Horton-Haynes, 20, is attending San
Francisco State University majoring in
Kineseology with a Theater Arts minor.
Performing Stars taught Khari “to step out
of my box of ignorance to a world of
enlightenment and opportunities.” Khari
has been acting since the age of five, when
he attended the Marin Theater Company on
a full scholarship and landed lead roles
during the summer camps. A natural actor
who could capture any audience, he also had
the dedication to give his best even to minor
roles. He is a very versatile young gentleman
with lots of genuine charm: at Redwood
High, he played football and still performed
in the school plays; he's a member of the
Marin City boxing club; he volunteers to help
seniors and he mentors younger children.
Domenika Johnson, 33, joined Performing
Stars at age 11. She had known about the
organization since she first moved to Marin
City at 9. She has vivid memories of the
decorated yard in front of the office and of
Felecia engaging with the children, passing
out popsicles and other treats and greeting
07
what a few of our alumni have to say (6)
each child personally. Domenika felt a part
of her new community and all the children
felt recognized and important. She participated in hip-hop and baton twirling. Both
programs boosted her confidence, forced
her to develop discipline and provided her
with a positive after-school structure. Being
taken to her first film festival and performing at the Jewish Community Center were
significant to Domenika as her first multicultural and art world experiences, and
ones she may not have ever had, were it not
for Felecia. It is the life-long friendships
with other girls in Performing Stars and the
“sisterhood” fostered during that time that
is most memorable for Domenika. She
hopes Performing Stars remains and flourishes so that many more children can be
reached each year, offering them all of the
benefits she was blessed with.
Shaun Joseph, “I'm very thankful to have
had Felecia Gaston and Performing Stars in
my upbringing. And even though everything
never goes as planned we still have to fight
for what we're trying to achieve. Performing
stars showed us valuable things early and if
we were in a shell the program pulled us out
of that mindstate and gave us confidence
and something to believe in other than the
bad things we saw on a daily basis.”
Jessie Land, 22, received her Cultural
Anthropology degree at the University of
Redlands. Jessie credits the performing arts
and music programs of Performing Stars as
the reason many opportunities opened up for
her, including roles with the Marin Theatre
Company and singing for Carlos Santana
at a fundraiser sponsored by Samsung Foundation and The Milagro Foundation. Jessie
is an accomplished musician, songwriter
and pianist.
Monique Malcolm, 33, says her 9 years
with Performing Stars in various programs
plays a large role in the woman she is today.
“Performing Stars is a great place to work
on your social skills, make friends, and keep
08
a positive mind and thoughts for a bright future.” Monique is currently working toward
a degree in nursing.
Kitara McCray, 19, works as a Student
Health Care Aide at Santa Rosa Junior College and is also a full-time student majoring
in Natural Science. Kitara believes it is because of Performing Stars that she is able to
set high goals in her life and is able to do
what is required to achieve those goals.
Elice Miggins, 23, is a full-time Lifestyle
Consultant at Massage Heights in Novato;
she learned patience from Performing Stars.
She is already thinking about enrolling her
two-year-old daughter, who loves to dance.
Tashell Mitchell was active in Performing
Stars from age 8 to 14. “I am appreciative
and grateful for Felecia Gaston, founder and
director of Performing Stars of Marin, for
establishing such an impactful program to
provide performing arts to children such as
myself in low-income, underrepresented
communities. Felecia Gaston also provided
us with learning and growth opportunities.
In particular I remember attending a book
signing at Dominican University in San
Rafael. Marian Wright Edelman, the author
of Lanterns: A Memoir of Mentors, presented her memoir and signed each one of
our copies. This event left a tremendous impact on my life, teaching me the importance
of having influential mentors such as Felecia
Gaston, who believes in providing youth
with the necessary tools to become successful in life. I still have my signed copy of
Edelman’s Memoir, and frequently revisit it.
Performing Stars is one of the reasons that I
have the confidence, motivation, and drive
to pursue and accomplish all of my dreams.
Thus far I have completed my undergraduate
studies and received my Bachelor’s Degree
in Legal Studies from the University of California, Berkeley.” Tashell is an executive assistant for Anjali Dea Music company and
plans to enter law school in the future.
what a few of our alumni have to say (7)
Arnetta Morgan, 34, feels Performing Stars
broadened her horizons past her small hometown perspective, and that meeting famous
individuals of her race helped her realize she
could achieve success as well. She has an A.A.
from Heald College.
Eric Mose, 34, recognizes his time with
Performing Stars’ drill team as when he
gained confidence, stability and overcame
some personal fears. Eric is a full-time
assistant at Redwood Credit Union and also
a student at Dominican College studying for
a degree in Strategic Management.
Rashima Mosley, 25, says her time with
Performing Stars opened her up socially, and
although she was “super shy and scared of
large crowds,” she was not so during performances. She made friends, learned skills
and her school work improved a lot. Rashima
has completed a Medical Assistance program at Everest College in San Francisco
and works as a caregiver and in retail.
Cindy Pacheco, 37, is a full-time oncology
technician and is certified as an Oncology
and Pharmacy Technician. “Performing
Stars instilled professional values as far as
job interviews and people skills. I was successful in all my career choices I’ve made.”
Juan Perez, 34, has obtained an Associate
of Applied Science Degree in Electronics
Engineering from Cape Fear Community
College, North Carolina, and has almost
completed his A.A.S. in Computer Integrated
Machining. He was active in the Boys to
Men program, dance and drill team. Juan
used the many skills he developed with Performing Stars in his military career as a
Combat Engineer with the U.S. Marine
Corps from 2000 to 2004 as well as in college. He is presently the team leader for the
pontoon line at 33rd Strike Group, a global
alliance committed to making boating more
feasible for everyone.
Lizaray Perez, 31, feels that acquiring mu-
sical skills such as rhythm, balance, and
reading music which she learned while with
Performing Stars, gave her an advantage in
high school music class, where she played
the clarinet and flute. She says the other
skills she learned in Performing Stars,
patience and respect, she still utilizes in
every day life. “Performing Stars was the
greatest high-light point in my life at that
age.” Lizaray has completed her education
in a trade school and became licensed in
her field in 2003.
D. Niesha Roary, 33, has received a B.A.
in Health Services Administration from
Baker College and is working on a Masters
degree in Health Services Administration.
She feels every community should have a
Performing Stars so all children can have
the opportunity to gain the confidence,
self-worth, and development of personal
responsibility that she gained.
Kenya Roary, 18, is currently a high
school student. “Performing arts helped
me with responsibility, and the social skills
helped me in becoming the young lady that
I am today.”
Michael Rodriguez-Reyes, 24, was in
hip-hop, gymnastics and theater during the
3 years he was with Performing Stars.
Gymnastics is where he really developed
his self-esteem, gained experience outside
his community and strengthened relationships with fellow team members. He fondly
remembers showcasing his abilities for family and community members and went on to
use his gymnastic skills to enhance his performance in other sports. Today Michael is
the Director for Farm To Table at Kawaiikalia Akoa Farms in Hawaii and believes
Performing Stars is a positive organization
fundamental to helping young people
advance into professional adults.
Tamara Small, 32, acknowledges that
because of her experience with Performing
09
what a few of our alumni have to say (8)
Stars she went on to dance throughout high
school. Tamara has worked as a legal secretary for a law firm, received a Certificate of
Completion from Marin Housing Authority
Family Self-Sufficiency Program and has
participated as a Customer Service Volunteer
at Marin General Hospital.
Daverick Smith, 18, joined Performing
Stars at 6 and participated in the Marin
Theater Company and Marin Shakespeare,
as well learning tap, manners and social
skills. Also, with his twin brother, he performed lead roles in summer theater camps.
He completed summer internships at Fireman’s Fund and the Twin Cities Police Department. He chose football over theater in
high school. He is now in “boot camp” with
the Marine Corps.
Davon Smith, 18, got involved with Performing Stars at the age of six. Davon has
performed lead roles at the Marin Theater
Company, participated in Marin Shakespeare summer camps, and learned to tap
dance. He believes Performing Stars programs should be in all communities. “Theater isn't just for the art of performing, it is
the art of verbal perfection. It taught me to
act but also to be a great speaker, interpreter,
entertainer, and to be able to read those
around me.” A well-rounded young man,
Davon ran track, played football and continued in theater at Tam High. He was given a
humanitarian award by the Marin County
Human Rights Commission honoring his
work as a peer tutor. He served summer internships at Fireman’s Fund and the Sausalito Police Department. Now a student at
College of Marin, he has chosen a career in
law enforcement. “Two years ago I just decided that’s what I wanted to do with my
life,” he explains. “Police shouldn’t forget
what their main purpose is, which is to serve
and protect. Part of giving back to your
community is keeping it safe.”
Kosandra Smith, 35, spent 8 years in Performing Stars but says “I never left - I am
10
always a star.” She is a full-time care provider but states she wants to go to art school
and pursue her dream of being an artist, a result of the “thinking big” she does everyday
and which she learned while in Performing
Stars. The hip-hop program taught her how
to dance but says it was the overall wonderful experience she had from a young girl
into adulthood that is most important and
that helped her self-esteem, improved her
grades, developed her social skills and made
her feel like she was part of “one big, happy
family of all different colors and sizes.”
Tashira Smith, 31, graduated from Fortis
College in 2015 and is employed full-time in
Customer Service. Performing Stars “is the
best thing that ever happened to me…Felicia
was the best. Thank you!!!”
Jamilah Stanfield obtained a B.A. in Psychology and Spanish, and an M.S. in Counseling - Marriage and Family Therapy. She
is an author and is employed part-time. The
skills of discipline and professionalism she
learned with Performing Stars have served
as a foundation for her academic success.
"Would you like to swing on a star…” I sing
this song to my babies at bedtime. I just put
my youngest one to sleep, and thought of
YOU (Felecia). Thank you for the role you
played in my life…The Performing Stars of
Marin was the best thing that happened to
our community back then, for sure! I just
wanted to let you know how much you still
"show up" in my life, and now my children's
lives...’ Would you like to swing on a star...’”
Linda Steele, 24, used her time with Performing Stars to connect with other resources.
She took ballet lessons from the age of 5 to
senior at Novato High and eventually joined
The Marin Ballet Company, which offered
her the exceptional training she wanted.
She credits Performing Stars with her development in many areas and, most importantly,
with making her plans for the future feel
attainable. She danced at the Ebony Fashion
Fair. Linda graduated from Dominican Uni-
what a few of our alumni have to say (8)
versity with Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree
in Dance and a minor in Art History. Her
wish for Performing Stars is that it could
expand to serve other Bay Area communities. She has auditioned in Europe and is
now a professional dancer.
Amaja Teal, 25, is a Supervisor of Security
at Universal Protection Services. She says
Performing Stars taught her to strive for
what she wanted in her future. She will
teach her daughter the baton twirling skills
she learned.
Bettine Times, 16, says she had a “forever
moment” which was pivotal for her and the
development of her confidence. During a
performance she needed to step forward
because the other performers forgot the
steps. By stepping forward and demonstrating the steps to her fellow performers and
the parents, she realized she could be great
at something. She would enroll her children
in Performing Stars “…because Felecia can
find a current passion in somebody and take
them all the way.”
Jazmine Times, 23, has obtained certification as a Pastry Chef from Le Cordon Bleu
in San Francisco and works part-time as a
cashier. She says she uses the skills she
learned while with Performing Stars in her
everyday life and tries to share them with
others and her own children. “The social
skills helped me be more confident in myself, in making friends and standing up for
what I believed in.”
Ryan Turner, 18: “Felecia helped me greatly.
She informed me and my family about a
scholarship from the Narada Michael
Walden foundation. I was able to get this
scholarship because of her and now I will be
attending the Academy of Art University in
the fall. I want to thank Felicia so much for
helping me start my life. I was afraid I
wouldn't have been able to go to college.
But because of her and her connections I'll
be able to live worry free.”
Sophie Lynn Peach Turner, 16: “I began
to be involved with the 4th of July Parade
when I was 5. I remember how it felt to
walk down the street and be happy!” She
specifically credits Felecia Gaston with
being actively in her life for over a decade
and helping her focus on her professional
career aspirations. Sophie attended Trapeze
Arts in Oakland and trained privately to
learn contortion with Guiness Book of
World Records holder, Inka Seikfer.
Daniel Vaughn, 20, thanks the staff of Performing Stars for pushing and encouraging
him with love and compassion, and introducing him to the world of theater. He feels
he is the person he is today because of it. He
is most passionate about having had the lead
roles in the Marin Shakepeare plays during
summer camp, especially Othello, but also
speaks highly of McBeth, Hamlet, and
Romeo and Juliet. In addition, he loves
African American history and has portrayed
Marcus Garvey and one of the Tuskegee
Airmen in performances. He received a
summer scholarship from the Narada Michael
Walden Foundation and attended an Academy of Art College summer program. Daniel
is an accomplished artist who has written
and illustrated a comic book, “Rogues &
Sorcery: The Story of Alden,” which is in
the process of being published. Daniel’s
career goal is law enforcement. He works
part-time and is studying Criminal Justice
at College of Marin.
Desiree Vaughn, 20, is working part-time
while attending College of Marin, and is
planning to transfer to Sacramento State
University to complete a degree in Criminal
Justice. She claims Performing Stars actively helped shape the confident young
woman she is today and helped her emerge
from being very shy as a child.
Orianna Vaughn, 26, gained a lot from her
short time with Performing Stars and regrets
not remaining longer. In her year of participating, she made a lot of new friends and
continued on page 16
11
what a few of our alumni have to say (9)
learned how to get along with others more
easily as a result of feeling better about herself. Today Orianna works full time and is
pursuing a 4-year college degree. She feels
she still uses the skills she developed while
in Performing Stars and would enroll her
own children in the program so they could
also have the “great opportunity” she had.
John Wallace, 37, is still an active member
of Performing Stars of Marin. John is a barber and volunteers to give the children in the
community free haircuts.“The baton twirling
was an awesome exprience and taught me
how to love my brother and friends and to
watch their backs. Felicia Gaston became
like another mother figure for me and provided a safe nurturing environment for me to
escape the dysfunction at my home at the
time. I was a child in search of myself and
found a home here…this program was a
huge part of my life…I will forever be grateful for Performing Stars. At home I was always told I would amount to nothing. This
program taught me that I can take a stand
and make my life count. Today I am blessed
with a beautiful family. I am honored to be
given a chance to stand up for my life and
give my children a beautiful life through this
program.” John is a tattoo artist and barber
and is also pursuing an Associate Degree in
Drug and Alcohol Counseling. “I planned to
go to college and make my family proud because no one has ever graduated college in
my family. I will be first to accomplish this.”
Presita Wallace, 27, is a full-time barista
while studying business and psychology at
College of Marin. She remembers the many
great role models available to her at Performing Stars. They boosted her confidence
and allowed her to believe that all dreams
are possible.
Chavon White, 26: Asked which Performing Stars programs helped her the most,
Chavon answered, “I believe the performance arts because it helped me break out of
my shell.” She has taught her daughters
some of the values she attained while with
16
Performing Stars. In 2012/13 she was an assistant coach for a cheerleading squad.
Jeremy White, “I was in drill team and the
Boys to Men group. Both programs kept me
safe and off the streets. I still remember
walking from the flea market and Felicia
would drive up in her jeep while working for
the Sheriff's Office. Without this program I
really don't think I would be the person I am
today…I told them I wanted to be in law enforcement and she took me to meet Marin
County Sheriff's Officer Doug Pittman.”
Jeremy is now an officer with the California
Highway Patrol.
Tatiana Williams, 31, discovered Performing Stars through her grandparents and participated in drill team, baton twirling, karate
and also pre-school.
Jahmanz Williams, 36, spent 7 years with
Performing Stars on drill team, baton twirling
and karate, departing to play high school
football. He says that all of the programs he
was in helped him develop social skills,
manners, grooming habits, commitment, responsibility and respect for others, enabling
him to function as a team player in school
and in business. Jahmanz received a B.A. in
Political Science, and is now working fulltime as a Customer Service Specialist. He
remains a Performing Stars enthusiast and
hopes for more funding for all the various
programs within the Performing Stars
organization.
Vanessa Williams, 21, uses the social skills
and confidence she developed with Performing Stars to become a better student and a
better employee. Vanessa participated in the
performing arts and neighborhood programs
and went on various field trips with Performing Stars. She believes the organization is
critical to providing inner city youth with new
experiences and opportunities they otherwise
would not have had. She is employed as a
deli clerk.
