Getting Ready for
Separate Garbage Collection
* What is it, exactly?
The basic idea is that each person must pay for what he throws out: the more you throw
out, the more you pay. This is administered by allowing only wastes in standard vinyl bags
to be thrown out. There are two types of bags; one for food waste and one for general
waste. Recyclable items do not need to be put in standard bags. The program was
implemented in 1995 to promote recycling and reduce wastes.
1. Timing: Discharge after sunset; garbage will be collected before sunrise
(exact time varies by district).
2. Place: In front of the gate or the entrance of the building. For apartments,
designated bins will be located outside the building.
3. Disposal bags can be purchased at designated supermarkets,
convenience stores, etc.
4. Recyclable items can be discharged in ordinary clear vinyl bags.
5. Fines: Unlawful disposal will be subjected to a fine of 100,000 won.
Failing to separate food waste from general waste will be
subjected to increasing fines (1st offense: 50,000 won, 2nd offense:
100,000 won, 3rd offense: 200,000 won).
3
General Waste
1. What is general waste?
Items for disposal other than food waste, recyclable items, and large items such as furniture
2. Rules of disposal
. Disposal bags can be bought in various sizes, at designated points of sale.
. Fill the bag up to the point specified on the bag;
then tie the bag twice in the shape of a cross (+).
. Different districts use different bags.
You must buy bags in your district, as bags from other districts cannot be used.
. Put out the bags after sunset to avoid the area being contaminated by passerby.
Collection days vary by district (inquire at district office).

Food Waste
1. What is food waste?
. Easiest way to think about it is, if animals can eat it, it’s considered food waste.
. After removing moisture and non-acceptable items (vinyl, bones, clams),
fill up the bag and put out on the designated day.
. Fines will be imposed should food wastes be mixed in general waste bags.
Fines will be increased with repeated offenses.
. Do not put toxic or strong wastes, such as swellfish/puffer eggs,
onion peels and pepper pastes in food waste bags.
Items not acceptable as food waste
Fruits
Hard shells such as shells of chestnut, walnut, peanut, acorn, coconut,
pineapple, coconut palm, etc.
Seeds of peaches, apricot, persimmon, etc.
Meats
Fish and seafood
Others
■
Bones and feathers
Shells of clam, abalone, sea squirt, crab, lobster, etc.
Swellfish innards
Tea bags, herb medicine residues, etc.
A fine of up to 200,000 won will be imposed for inappropriate discharge of food wastes or general wastes.
4
Recycling
1. Divide by items and bind, or put in clear plastic bags as not to be blown away.
2. Recyclable items need not be put in discharge bags, so recycling well will save you money.
3. As with general waste, discharge at designated places or in front of the building entrance.
4. Items will not be collected if mixed with general waste.
