18ct yellow gold necklace on a green satin cord, comprising 40 interconnected gold shapes, nine
set with natural solid Queensland boulder opals. The necklet’s organic shapes are designed to
celebrate the asymmetrical nature of natural opal, and move with the body like a lace collar.
Motivation: To showcase the combination of modern design and Aust ralian opal
– demonstrating that opal is indeed the world’s most fabulous gem and anything but oldfashioned. We hope that our pieces can inspire a “reinvention of opal” by re-igniting industry and
consumer interest in opal, and save an ailing national industry.

Doreen’s Glory
Rhythm
An 18ct white gold ring, plated with black rhodium on the
inner ring sleeves and white rhodium on the outer bands,
comprising one 3.09ct natural solid Queensland boulder
opal as the centre stone, with pave set rubies, pink,
purple yellow and blue sapphires, emeralds and tsavorite
garnets. The ring’s design emphasises the “rolling flash”
inherent in the opal by extending and exaggerating the
movement of light in the similarly coloured pave set gems
adjacent to the opal.
This piece captures with its simplicity, steady rhythm
and elegant movement a feeling reminiscent of the
era when life began. Made with 18ct white gold,
the piece can be worn as either brooch or pendant –
pendant has been designed with enhancer, enabling
piece to be worn with a strand of pearls.

Motivation: To expose the opal – a unique creation
of the Cretaceous period – by using the vogue
designs to entice customers to explore and discover
the natural beauty of our Australian national
gemstone.
Motivation: To showcase the combination of modern
design and Australian opal – demonstrating that opal
is indeed the world’s most fabulous gem and anything
but old-fashioned. We hope that our pieces can inspire a

interest in opal, and save an ailing national industry.

Pivot
Armoure
Pivot is a ring comprising concentric marquise layers
radiating from a centre piece of white mokumegane. Designed to pivot randomly from 2 central
axes, so the layers can be viewed from different
angles. The mokume layers were used to enhance the
concentricity of the seemingly random patterns and
the layering of colour.
Inspired by ancient armour, this18ct yellow and white
gold piece combines flowing feminine shapes with
mechanical functionality, creating a new jewellery
concept.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The Jewellers Association of Australia extends its thanks to the following people for their
contribution to the 2006 Australian Jewellery Design Awards.
LISA WILKINSON – Awards presenter
At age 21, Lisa was appointed editor of Dolly and four years later, became editor of Cleo where she
launched the successful listing of Australia’s 50 Most Eligible Bachelors. Over the next ten years,
Lisa set new records in Australian publishing. In addition to a stellar publishing career, Lisa is a
leading business mentor and runs her own international magazine consultancy business. Nicole
Kidman, Megan Gale and Kate Fischer can also thank Lisa for her talent-spotting abilities and the
role she played in launching their careers. In the last decade, Lisa has branched out into TV and
radio and is now one of Australia’s most popular and in-demand multi-media performers. From her
role as host of TV’s top-rating Weekend Sunrise on Channel Seven, to her regular appearances on
Radio 2UE, Lisa is without doubt one of Australia’s most admired and respected female journalists
and opinion leaders.
THE SCARLETTS
The Scarletts are singer-songwriters Angela Little and Jess Millo who first began writing together in
2005 and have quickly developed their own “chick rock” sound. The girls are currently working on
the vision for their first album, which they hope to release in the next twelve months. The Scarletts
have performed live with singing icon Wendy Matthews, and collaborated with producer Craig
Porteils (Shannon Noll, Guy Sebastian) and multi award winning writer/producer Mario Millo.
There’s no doubt that the best is yet to come!
THE WAVES
Renowned Australian guitarist-composer and Sebastian Hardie front man, Mario Millo, has
assembled a line-up of some of Sydney’s finest musicians to form The Waves. The Waves will be
working with The Scarletts to produce their upcoming debut album, and can additionally boast a
repertoire that includes a wide range of much-loved covers to have everyone dancing in the aisles!
ERNST PFENNINGER – Trophies
Ernst Pfenninger, designer goldsmith and silversmith has designed and made the JAA awards for
2000, 2004 and 2006 and proudly supports the JAA. He appreciates the importance of these
awards in recognizing and rewarding apprentices to professionals for their special designs and
craftsmanship in execution of the piece. Pfenninger learnt his trades in Switzerland and has been
an artisan for over 40 years. He produces a wide and diverse range of handcrafted pieces from
individual and innovative jewellery and hollow-ware to awards, trophies and ceremonial items.
The majority of his work is commissioned and is not commercial. Pfenninger’s private school
in Leichhardt NSW, has been operating for over 30 years - where beginners to advanced and
professional students design and create their own pieces under his guidance. His work can be
seen at his shop Studio 303 at 303 Parramatta Road Leichhardt and also on his website
www.studio303.com.au.
PER ERICSON – Photographer
Per Ericson was formally trained in Sweden and has been working in Sydney as a freelance still
life photographer for more than twenty years. During this time he has worked with advertising
agencies and design studios, photographing general still life and specialising in the photography of
food, cars, furniture, glassware and jewellery. Per has had a strong lifelong interest in industrial and
product design which has led him to appreciate the craftsmanship in jewellery, whether it involves
simple or intricate forms. He has found that the level of craftsmanship present in jewellery design
relates well to the preciseness and attention to detail that is present in his photography.
