Congratulations Class of 2015
There were a lot of happy, relieved faces after the second HSC English paper yesterday.
There’s still a lot of study ahead, so please keep our girls in your prayers.
Already the Class of 2015 has achieved fantastic success. Three of our Drama students
performed so strongly in their group HSC performance that they have received the rare honour
of being nominated for OnStage where the very best HSC Drama will be showcased at the
Seymour Centre. Congratulations to Clare Carrington, Rachel Vala, Rachel Beard and teacher
Mrs Herrera!
A number of our HSC girls have already won entry into university. Congratulations to
Genevieve Cipollone who made it into Arts/Social Work at Sydney University. Lucy Faehrmann
is spoilt for choice, winning a position in a Bachelor of Medical Science at Macquarie and,
together with Jacinta Baladi, a Bachelor of Communications and Media at Notre Dame. Natalie
Zouki has a place in Early Childhood and Counselling at Notre Dame and Catherine Nader in
Speech Pathology at Sydney University. Well done!
Mock Trial
After a long winning streak, our Mock Trial team bowed out yesterday, defeated narrowly by
SCEGGS Darlinghurst. The girls made it to the top 16 schools in NSW! A big congratulations to
Ann-Maree Sarkis, Clara Fernandez, Isobel Patmore, Sarah Kennaugh, Marie-Bernadette
Morad and Rita Boulattouf.
Leadership
I spent Saturday morning with our newly elected Captains from the Class of 2016. They had
two inspiring days at the Mitchell Youth Leadership Forum with student leaders from across the
Hills area. They have some excellent goals for the next year: fun activities to unite Primary and
Secondary, mentoring younger students and a stronger focus on social justice and community
service.
What they talked about most - and passionately - was how much they love Tangara. It’s traditional at Mitchell for the Redfield boys to now and then break out in a proud Redfield war cry.
On Friday night at Mitchell, the Tangara girls said, ‘We can do better than that!’ They stood up
spontaneously in front of 160 other students and sang the chorus to our School song: ‘Robust
and strong, hearts filled with song, carry to all in the land. Tangara ad summam virtutem.
In Faith Hope and Love we stand.’ I look forward to our leaders spreading more of this ‘Tangara
pride’ far and wide!

Year 1 Excursion
As part of the unit on Natural and Built
Environments, Year 1 visited Warragamba Dam,
one of the world's largest domestic water supply
dams .
French Assembly Item
The students explored all aspects of modern water
supply and learned about water through hands-on
activities in the Warragamba Dam Visitor Centre.
Monday 19 October MPH 2pm
The group had escorted access to the
Warragamba Dam wall itself and drove down a
steep road to experience the look of the dam wall
from the base.

We learned about how the Warragamba eels
migrate over the dam’s spillway to the ocean to
breed and die near New Caledonia and Vanuatu.
The baby eels then travel all the way back to
Warragamba Dam through the lake, crawl through
the forest and grow up in the dam, just like their
parents. Experiencing the dam close-up was quite
awe inspiring.
Thank you to the parents who accompanied us on
our trip– we all had a day to remember…

HOST FAMILIES FOR "GAP STUDENTS"
We are looking for families of the school to volunteer to host a Gap student during their
time in Sydney. This can be for a short placement to a 9-12 month one. It would be for
2016 and beyond.
The host family is paid a stipend to cover the accommodation costs. Gaps work at Tangara
during the term and often use the holiday breaks to travel around Australia.
The experience of families who have done this in the past has been a very positive
one. The sharing of the different cultures is enriching and many overseas friends have
been made as a result.

Year 10 Geography
As part of our recent study of the various links Australia has both regionally and globally, Year 10
Geography looked at the issue of social justice and equity in relation to trade through a case study of
cocoa farming in Ghana. Inspired by the ethics of the topic, Catherine Panayi took it upon herself to
research this issue further and independently wrote the following engaging article.

THE NESTLÉ COCOA PLAN
The NCP is one of the Nestlé initiatives to promote better environmental and social
quality to their products.
Nestlé has a broad range of initiatives to accommodate their broad range of products
and the NCP is focused on improving the farming, production and export of cocoa
beans in the Ivory Coast and Ghana, West Africa which produce more than half of the
world’s cocoa beans used for chocolate.
Commitments of the NCP include enabling more profitable farms, improving social
conditions, developing a sustainable supply chain as well as collaborating with
partners and companies to achieve these commitments.
The NCP have enabled more profitable farms by supporting cocoa farmers with on site demonstrations on
ways to increase their income by producing better quality beans, as well as a higher quantity. They teach
the techniques of accelerated propagation which means, thousands of identical, coffee and cocoa plants
can be grown with high quality and no genetic modification. Farmers are also taught better farming
practices at farmer field schools, which also promote caring for the environment. Farmers attend these
farming schools every two or three weeks so they are constantly learning about the newest and most
sustainable methods to improve their farming. These beans will now become of higher quality and be
more traceable, so as to profit the correct farmers.
The main negative social condition of harvesting cocoa and even coffee beans is child labour. Although it is
illegal in most if not all African countries, it exists and is even prominent in some provinces. While these
dangers are fact, the NCP have increased farmer income and improved educational opportunities in the
last decade. Fewer children are exposed to the hazards of child labour and are attending one of the 40
schools the NCP has founded over the last few years.
As we know, while most if not all of the most popular brands of chocolate support things like training for
farmers and ensuring a child’s education to eradicate child labour, the cocoa beans from their chocolate
are not certified to be harvested from farms that do not use child labour. To prove certification and
support legal farming, Nestlé has joined up with other certified organisations and NGO’s including;
Fair Labour Association, Fair-trade, UTZ Certified Cocoa, International Cocoa Initiative, World Cocoa
Foundation and others, to ensure certification that all cocoa beans in Nestlé products were harvested
legally and by trained farmers.
I wrote this after noticing that my mother bought chocolate packaged with
this symbol and I thought; if I could tell people about what was happening at
these farms, what these plans are doing to help and the simple thing that we
can do to help - making sure we buy Fair-trade or certified chocolate I wanted
tell people about it. Although it may cost an extra 50cents or so, what cost is that compared to the cost
children at labour farms have to pay. It is an important topic for me, because of my support for equality
and human rights, and knowing in this tiny way that I can help, I think is important to share so that
everyone knows how to help.

Fr John would like to let parents and extended members of the School community

Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Fr John also now has a blog on which he has posted recorded meditations & answers

‘This is God’s dream for His beloved Creation: to see it fulfilled in the loving union between a man
and a woman, rejoicing in their shared journey, fruitful in their mutual gift of self.’
These were the words of Pope Francis last Sunday during his homily at the opening Mass for the
Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the theme: ‘The vocation and mission of
the family in the Church and the contemporary world.’
Let’s increase our prayer for the Synod during October, praying the Rosary with our family.
The Rosary will be said in the
Chapel every morning at 8.10am
during the month of October.

Hills Zone Junior Tennis Championships

Basketball Winter Competition Winners
We had 4 teams into the Grand Finals. Tangara 16 U11s, Tangara 14 U13s, Tangara 11 U14s and Tangara
5 U17/18s.
There was one Grand Final winner : Tangara 11 (Year 7s) with Coach Meliza Weber.
What a great game and brilliant team work with all the players.
This was a very close game however Tangara 11 won the game.
A very well deserved win. Fantastic to see all the players, coach, parents and supporters enjoy this
game.
Congratulations also to the Runners Up - Tangara 14, Tangara 16 and Tangara 5.
All these three games were of a high calibre as well.
The players played with passion and team work that challenged them right to the end.
To the players and coaches of these teams, we are so proud of how well you played and have improved
over this past season.
To all the teams that played the Winter competition, thank you. You have done yourselves, your teams,
your coaches and families proud. All the best for the Summer competition.
