The intent of this letter is to provide additional insight and technical data in relation to the
proposed Cardinale Auto Dealership in Mesa, AZ.
The initial design was completed using the PAD standards dated May 21, 2001. The standards
specify the use of the Kim Architype fixture using color correct metal halide lamping. The metal
halide lamps are currently used throughout this complex in compliance with this PAD.
Metal Halide has been the standard lamping used in Auto dealerships for years. There are many
drawbacks to the use of metal halide lamps. They consume much more power than other
fixtures now available, they have limitations on how they can be controlled, and as it is a bulb,
they rely on a reflector to direct the lights. We are seeing a shift in the automotive industry to
LED to solve many of the issues metal halides have. LED fixtures are designed such that many
individual LEDs placed in a fixture create a light pattern Each LED has its own reflector therefore
casting light where it is needed eliminating much of the spill light. In addition, the LED wattage
consumption is significantly less than that of metal halide. Using this project as an example, the
metal halide fixtures would use 465 watts per head while the LED uses just 188 watts, a savings
of 60%.
Using the Kim Architype in and LED configuration, we are able to achieve a more uniform light
level with less foot candles. The DR plans have been revised in incorporate 15’-0” pole
throughout this site with an average of 12.2 foot candles on the front row and 5.7 foot candles
for the rest of the site. All fixtures on the front rows have been provided with a neighborhood
friendly optic that aids in minimizing light spill and glare behind the poles.
The use of LED fixtures also allows us to use a wireless dimming system called wiHUBB to
greatly reduce the light levels after hours. Each fixture (or group of fixtures) is provide with a
Wi-Fi control point that communicates to a central system and time clock that will provide
automatic dimming of the site light after hours.
On the evening of April 6, 2015, Alexandra Schuchter with John Mahoney Architect and myself
visited the proposed site and the existing Cardinale Mazda dealership to evaluate lighting in
person. While there, I took foot candle readings around 8PM with a light meter to verify
compliance with the current PAD. I found the light levels on the front line of Test Drive to be
between 30-50 foot candles. The remainder of the site ranged from 10-25 foot candles. These
are within the requirements of the PAD. After hours, the Cardinale Mazda dealership reduce
the light level on site by turning off all pole lights and only leaves on the wall packs and canopy
light for security.

We feel that with the reduced wattage, reduce foot candle levels, better control of the light,
and wireless dimming system the proposed site will far exceed the standards set forth in the
PAD.
Please do not hesitate to call with any questions.
