Super 6 Enjoys Super Week at Tuscaloosa
The 2009 Super 6 State Football
Championships closed out two wonderful days of lifelong memories at the
University of Alabama’s Bryant-Denny
Stadium and all I can say is “Wow.”

The City of Tuscaloosa and its Tuscaloosa Sports Foundaton were tremendous hosts for the event. With three
games played each day at beautiful
Bryant-Denny, the experience for the
players and coaches and fans was just
wonderful. The games were wellplayed. Attendance was up 44 percent
over the 2008 Super 6 with an estimated attendance over the two-day
event of 47,718.

Super 6 a success— continued
The Tuscaloosa Sports Foundation, headed by Don Staley,
did a remarkable job getting
the cities of Tuscaloosa and
Northport on board along with
Tuscaloosa County. Many volunteers worked tirelessly to
insure the teams, coaches and
fans had a rewarding experience. We thank all who had a
part in the 2009 success, especially Mr. Staley and his volunteers, The University of Alabama’s staff, Marty Smith and
the Alabama Sports Foundation
for their strong leadership. All
games were televised live
across the state. We thank CBS
42 and its network of affiliates.
The games were also broadcast via live radio across the
state thanks to
the AHSAA Radio Network.
I also want to
thank the Central Board of
Control and the
Founders of the
Super 6 as well
as other members of the Monday Morning Quarterback Club
that provided the foundation
back in 1996. They had the foresight to bring the championships together at a neutral site
in 1996. Foremost among them
was former AHSAA executive
director Dan Washburn, who
shared this vision and believed
it would work.
Most of all we thank the
teams, the players and
coaches for displaying outstanding sportsmanship and
such inspiring determination.
The reason for the Super 6
should always be to provide a
memorable and rewarding experience for the studentathletes who play the games.
To the Central Board, our
schools and to all our students,
coaches, teachers and administrators, I want to wish each
and every one of you a Merry
Christmas, a Happy New Year
and a joyous holiday season.
Let us never forget the real
reason for Christmas.

AHSAA member schools can get free tickets to bring teams to the T-Mobile Invitational national high school basketball tournament at Samford University
Dec. 29-30 by applying on line at www.ahsaa.com.
A limited supply of free tickets for AHSAA member school teams will be made
available on a first-come, first-serve basis. DEADLINE FOR APPLYING ON

T-Mobile Announces Pairings For Prestigious Tournament
The first-round pairings of boys
and girls teams for the 2009 TMobile Invitational national high
school basketball tournament Dec.
29-30 have been announced by TMobile USA, Inc., and the National
Federation of State High School
Associations (NFHS).
The first girls game on Dec. 29
will be at 1 p.m. at Samford’s Pete
Hanna Arena with nationally topranked St. Mary’s (CA) vs. Mt.
Lebanon (PA). Hoover will take on
Hillsboro of Nashville in the second
game.
The first boys game features Houston-Yates (TX) versus CovingtonKentwood (WA) followed by Butler
of Huntsville and Winter Park, FL.
2-Day Pass: Tickets are $10 for
students and $16 for adults.
1-Day Pass: ($6 and $10, one
day).

Mountain Brook, Bob Jones Claim Swim Crowns
Mountain Brook captured the girls
championship and Bob Jones won
the boys title Dec. 5 at the AHSAA
2009 state swimming championships at Auburn University’s James
Martin Aquatic Center.
The Lady Spartans out-pointed
runner up Auburn 210-185 to claim
the title. Bob Jones rolled up 293
points to also beat runner-up Auburn with 232 points.
The Patriots won the boys competition on the strength of two record-setting performances in relay
wins. The team of Scott von
Jouanne, Kent Fellows, Charlie
Johnson and George Wong swam
the 200-yard freestyle relay in
1:26.55 to set the new AHSAA
mark. Von Jouanne, Fellows, Phil
Deaton and Wong then closed out
the competition with a recordsetting 3:09.93 time to win the 400yard freestyle relay.
Woody Joye of Stanhope Elmore
also closed out his incredible prep
career by adding one more record
to his list of wins. The University of
Texas signee turned in a winning
time of 48.76 seconds in the 100yard butterfly to set a new AHSAA
mark in that event. He narrowly
missed breaking his own mark set
in 2008 (50.03) in winning the 100yard backstroke with a 50.63 time.
In the girls competition, Rainey
White sparked Mountain Brook
400-yard freestyle relay as well
with teammates Anna Judd,
Stanley and Carr to turn in a winning 3:39.93 time, just 85/100ths
of a second off the record time set
by the Lady Spartans in the 2000
state meet.
Megan Molnar of Auburn
also set a state record on Saturday
with her winning 1:02.31 time in
the 100-yard breaststroke finals.
In the diving competition on Friday, Jillian Braun of Auburn totaled 387.15 to win the girls 1meter competition. Robert Raley
of Murphy won the boys’ diving
title with a winning score of
492.86.
with two individual wins and the
anchor leg on two winning relays.
She set a new AHSAA state record
in the 100-yard butterfly competition with a time of 55.91 seconds in
the finals. She also won the 100yard freestyle in 52.60, just a second off the state mark.
She also teamed with
Samantha Stanley, Mallie Bromberg and Mary Carr to win the 200yard freestyle relay in 1:40.31. She
swam the final leg of the winning

PREPARE Now Accepted by NFHS as Approved Course
PREPARE, a sports-safety course created by the National Center for Sports Safety that already meets the first aid
requirement for the AHSAA coaching certification, has been accepted as a first aid equivalent for the newly
launched Level 1 – Accredited Interscholastic Coach Certification of the National Federation of State High School
Associations (NFHS).
The program is aimed at educating coaches on how to prevent common injuries, how to recognize symptoms of
potentially dangerous conditions and how to respond in emergency situations. PREPARE participants will gain valuable information that is relevant on and off the playing field.
The PREPARE course, available online for $36, is also available in a hands-on setting in various states. To find out

Six New Champions Crowned at Super 6
Six new champions were crowned
at the AHSAA 2009 Super 6 State
Football Championships last week.
Brantley (1A), Reeltown (2A) and
Demopolis (5A) all had won previous championships at the Super 6.
Hoover ended Prattville’s threeyear hold on the 6A crown with a 28
-23 win in the finals to close out the
two-day competition on Friday
night.

The Bucs (14-1) have now won six
6A titles since 2000. Piedmont (132) won its first-ever football championship with a 35-28 overtime win
over Cordova in the 3A finals to
kick off the six-game marathon on

Alabama All-Stars preparing for Saturday’s
Classic at Mobile’s Ladd-Peebles Stadium
Eight members of

AlabamaMississippi All-Star
Classic played in
state championship
games at the AHSAA’s Super 6 in
Tuscaloosa last
week.
This year's All-Star Classic is set
for Saturday, December 12, at Mobile's Ladd-Peebles Stadium. The
contest will be nationallytelevised by VERSUS with kickoff
slated for 12:30 p.m.
Players arrived in Mobile on Monday for a week-long series of
practices and special events leading up to the game. Over 30 members of this year's Alabama and
Mississippi rosters have already
verbally committed to play at SEC
colleges and other major schools
in 2010.

The Hoover-Prattville contest
won by the Bucs 28-23 featured six
All-Star Classic players, three
from each team. Hoover wide receivers Maudrecas Humphrey,
Josh Magee and linebacker John
Propst are on the roster along with
Prattville linebacker Quashaun
Lee, defensive back Nick Perry
and receiver Corey Shelton. Prattville coach Jamey DuBose is also
on the Alabama coaching staff.
In the 4A Championship Game,
Blanchard earned the game's MVP
honors in leading the Warriors to
a 31-27 victory over Jackson to cap
off a perfect 15-0 season. Blanchard threw for 187 yards and a
touchdown and also rushed for
100 yards and two more scores,
the final one coming from five
yards out with just 26 seconds to
AHSAA Cheer Competition Dec. 19
AHSAA member school cheerleading squads will compete at
Wallace State Community College
in Hanceville Dec. 19 beginning at
9 a.m.. Deadline for all entries
is Dec. 9.
The Universal Cheerleaders
Association will conduct the event.
The competition is open to any
AHSAA member school. The AH-
SAA will be working closely with
UCA to assure that the judging
panels will be representative of all
entities of the cheerleading industry.
Competition begins at 9 a.m. for
varsity squads and 2 p.m. for other
divisions.
