Email: [email protected]. FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Eagle Fans: Welcome to the 2013 season and the dawning of a new era for Eagle baseball. At MCC, we are very excited about our new coaching staff and the improvements our Board of Trustees have made at William F. Scaggs Field. I feel confident that our first-year head coach, Dillon Sudduth, will continue the tradition of excellence that has been the hallmark of Eagle baseball. He is a young man who has paid his dues, working in the program under former coach Chris Curry, and he brings a lot of baseball savvy, energy and enthusiasm to the program, as does his able assistant, Thomas Tillery. MCC has, in my view, recorded an unrivaled coaching legacy in the annals of contemporary junior college baseball in Mississippi. No less than three former Eagle helmsmen have ascended to the NCAA Division I head coaching ranks – the legendary Corky Palmer and Scott Berry at Southern Miss and Russ McNickle at Saint Leo University. Several others now hold positions as top assistants on the D-I level. Also, two former Eagle coaches – Palmer and Billy Harold Smith – have been inducted into the Mississippi Junior College Sports Hall of Fame. Meridian Community College I am likewise excited about a revitalized Scaggs Field – a new field house overlooking the third-base line that is as impressive as you’ll find anywhere in America on the juco level; all-new fencing, including a netted backstop; and a new batting practice facility. Other recent improvements include a new scoreboard and irrigation system. Scaggs Field remains a facility in which our college and community at-large can take great pride. Finally, I want to take this opportunity to thank you, the fans of Eagle baseball, for your support of the program. I know our players and coaches will prove worthy of that support by conducting themselves in a fashion that well represents MCC both on and off the field. See you at the ballpark. Go Eagles! Scott Elliott President, Meridian Community College 3 At the dedication were Smith, Sudduth, Williams and Berry. BUILDING ON TRADITION Smith William Field House dedication conjures memories President Elliott said that Smith and Williams were well deserving of having the building named in their honor by the MCC Board of Trustees. Williams, as a student and employee, has enjoyed a 41-year association with MCC. He was a player on the inaugural Eagle team in 1970 and later became an assistant coach and then head coach for one season, chalking up a 21-6 record. He then became the college’s physical plant director, now having responsibility for the maintenance of about 700,000-square feet of building space. “Terry has done a superlative job for the college over the years,” Elliott It’s a far cry from the pickup truck that once held the team’s gear to the said. “He plays a vital role in the college’s operations. On the baseball newly-constructed 4,444 square foot state-of-the-art baseball field front, he has been a part of the Eagle legacy as a player, a coach, and house that was dedicated in October of 2012 at Scaggs Field. an individual who helped to develop our baseball facilities through the years.” Billy Harold Smith and Terry Williams, two individuals who helped to lay the foundation for the storied MCC baseball program, were honored As for Smith, Elliott characterized him as “the father of Eagle baseball.” when MCC dedicated its new baseball field house in their honor. “MCC had three other outstanding coaches (Bill May, Quitman Lockley and Williams) who came before Billy Harold,” Elliott said, “but Billy Harold to this day has the longest tenure of any Eagle coach at 10 years. He was the first MCC coach to lead a team into the playoffs; the first coach to record a 30-win season; helped to develop an on-campus ballpark; and became the founding father of the Mississippi Junior College Baseball The concept for the facility – a building overlooking Scaggs Field with All-Star game. He gave his heart and soul to Eagle baseball, paving the the dugout connected to the locker room, major league style - was cre- way for a program that was to become nationally recognized under Corky ated by MCC President Dr. Scott Elliott and brought to fruition by local ar- Palmer and Scott Berry. So, I think most people would agree that would chitect Arjen Lagendijk and his assistant, Don Delaney. Much of the labor make Billy Harold essentially the father of our program.” for the project was supplied by students in MCC’s Construction Trades and Industrial Maintenance Programs under the direction of Olin Thomas and Jim Miles, respectively. The field house is located adjacent to an all-new batting practice facility and hosts a large 40-station, multi-media equipped locker room area; shower, restroom and laundry facilities; coaches’ offices; a trophy room and a viewing deck overlooking Scaggs Field. Field house 4 Dedication 2013 Eagle Baseball FACILITIES Smith was inducted into the Mississippi Junior College Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. Both Smith and Williams said they were honored and overwhelmed at the naming of the field house in their honor. Smith said during his early coaching tenure at MCC, “the field house was in the back of my daddy’s pick-up truck and we traveled to John Moss Field.” He Meridian Community College added, “We’ve come a long way.” Meridian Community College’s Scaggs Field is considered one of the top junior college baseball fields in the country. More than just a field of dreams, Dr. William F. “Bill” Scaggs became MCC’s first official president in 1968 and served in that capacity until the fall of 1998. Under Dr. Scaggs’ leadership, the College engaged in an impressive capital improvements program, adding several buildings to its physical plant and continuously expanding its career and technical education and academic programs. He guided the establishment of The MCC Foundation, and became one of the state’s leaders in educational technology. Upon Scaggs’ retirement, MCC’s baseball facility was named “William F. Scaggs Field” in recognition of not only his considerable contributions to the College but also his abiding love for the national past time. 5 SEASON OUTLOOK may lead us in appearances this year. He has a great temperament on the mound and just pounds the zone from underneath.” Sellars has shown breaking ball command and will only continue to improve.” Freshmen Andrew Crook, Michael Druhan, and Chad Hinton will all add depth to the Eagle bullpen. CATCHERS Freshmen Garrett LaRosa and Kevin Hall look to fill the void left by AllAmerican and 13th round draft pick Wade Wass. “I really like the two guys we brought in. Garrett has been outstanding for us since the day he stepped on campus and Kevin has all the tools to be a great player,” said Coach Sudduth. Dallas Hannah and Luke Stanley both lend depth behind the plate as secondary catchers. Brandon Smith pitcher PITCHING The Eagles have some holes to fill as they graduated five division one signees from last years’ staff. MCC will look to sophomores Brandon Smith and Mitchel Babb to lead the way as they enter the spring penciled in as the top two starters. “Brandon Smith is a winner whose teammates love playing behind him. He made a jump this fall with increased velocity and a tighter breaking ball,” said Coach Sudduth. “Mitchel is as talented as any LHP you will find at this level. He showed greater command this fall and will play a large role for us.” Lamar School grad and Meridian native Witt Haggard could fill a variety of roles for the Eagles. “Witt has made huge strides over the past year. He could be a starter or find himself at Dallas Hannah infielder the back end of the ball game.” Blake Barrow and Jace Belcher round out the returning arms. “Blake is a tremendous competitor who can give you a different look out of the bullpen with his low arm slot,” said Coach Sudduth. “Jace Belcher is a left hander who will have a big year for us.” Freshmen Kellon Hibbard and Dylan Sellars and Andrew Crook look to Jace Belcher, pitcher parlay their improvements made this fall into innings this spring. “Kellon 6 SEASON OUTLOOK 2013 Eagle Baseball 2012 SEASON OUTLOOK INFIELDERS First baseman and Meridian High grad Dallas Hannah returns to anchor the infield. “Dallas is an above average defender at first and got big hit after big hit for us last year.” Tanner Vandevere and Michael Williams both gained experience last year and are in the mix to be everyday players along with several newcomers. Mac Seibert, Levi Runyan, Ben Gann, Grant Hill and Brooks Balisterri are the freshmen competing for spots around the infield. “We like our options on the infield. It’s an athletic group and each guy brings something different to the table,” said Coach Sudduth. Jonathan Youngblood, center field OUTFIELDERS Leading the way in the outfield is centerfielder Jonathan Youngblood. Youngblood decided to return to the Eagles for his sophomore season after being drafted in the 15th round by the Pittsburg Pirates in last June’s draft. “We’re pretty comfortable with Johnny leading off and playing centerfield for us as one of the nation’s top players.” Blake Barrow and Alvin Franklin are the most experienced returning outfielders as they combined to start 57 games last year. Charles Morton and Luke Stanley have been getting defensive reps in the outfield this year after spending the majority of their freshmen seasons at other positions. “Charles was really impressive for us this fall offensively. He has matured so much physically since he got here and is a presence in the box.” Freshmen Tanner Vandevere third base outfielders Andrew Crook and Paul Angel round out the outfielders. “Paul is talented and hard-nosed and is going to challenge for a starting position in the outfield.” Meridian Community College 7 NUMERICAL ROSTER # Name Year Position Hometown High School 1 Tanner Vandevere SO IF Corpus Christi, TX Calallen 2 Dallas Hannah SO IF Meridian, MS Meridian 3 Mike Williams SO IF Houma, LA Terrebone 4 Alvin Franklin SO OF Jackson, MS Murrah 5 Andrew Crook FR OF/RHP Springdale, AR Har-Ber 7 Stanford Parks SO OF Madison, MS Madison Central 8 Michael Druhan FR IF/RHP Collierville, TN Collierville 9 Mac Seibert FR IF Cantonment, FL Tate 11 Paul Angel FR OF Birmingham, AL Spain Park 12 Scott Votaw SO IF/RHP New Hebron, MS Lawrence County 13 Jace Belcher SO LHP Quitman, MS Quitman 14 Luke Stanley SO OF/C Meridian, MS Meridian 15 Blake Barrow SO OF/RHP Montgomery, AL Trinity 16 Charles Morton SO IF/OF Eupora, MS Eupora 17 Dylan Sellars FR RHP Baton Rouge, LA Episcopal 18 Grant Hill FR IF Meridian, MS West Lauderdale 19 Mitchel Babb SO LHP Batesville, MS South Panola 22 Brooks Balisterri FR IF Benton, AR Benton 24 Garrett Larosa FR C Long Beach, MS Long Beach 26 Levi Runyan FR IF Hot Springs, AR Lake Hamilton 27 Ben Gann FR IF Birmingham, AL Vestavia Hills 31 Witt Haggard SO RHP Meridian, MS Lamar 32 Brandon Smith SO RHP Petal, MS Petal 33 Kevin Hall FR C Collierville, TN Collierville 34 Caleb DeLee SO RHP Collierville, TN Collierville 35 Kellon Hibbard FR RHP Collierville, TN Collierville 36 Jonathan Youngblood SO OF Lexington, KY Lafayette 37 Chad Hinton FR RHP Meridian, MS Clarkdale 6 Dillon Sudduth Head Coach 10 Thomas Tillery Assistant Coach Chris Agent Manager Chris Haralson Athletic Trainer Robby Atkinson Sports Information Director TEAM ROSTER 8 2013 Eagle Baseball ALPHABETICAL ROSTER Number Name Year Position Hometown High School 11 Angel, Paul FR OF Birmingham, AL Spain Park 19 Babb, Mitchel SO LHP Batesville, MS South Panola 22 Balisterri, Brooks FR IF Benton, AR Benton 15 Barrow, Blake SO OF/RHP Montgomery, AL Trinity 13 Belcher, Jace SO LHP Quitman, MS Quitman 5 Crook, Andrew FR OF/RHP Springdale, AR Har-Ber 34 DeLee, Caleb SO RHP Collierville, TN Collierville 8 Druhan, Michael FR IF/RHP Collierville, TN Collierville 4 Franklin, Alvin SO OF Jackson, MS Murrah 27 Gann, Ben FR IF Birmingham, AL Vestavia Hills 31 Haggard, Witt SO RHP Meridian, MS Lamar 33 Hall, Kevin FR C Collierville, TN Collierville 2 Hannah, Dallas SO IF Meridian, MS Meridian 35 Hibbard, Kellon FR RHP Collierville, TN Collierville 18 Hill, Grant FR IF Meridian, MS West Lauderdale 37 Hinton, Chad FR RHP Meridian, MS Clarkdale 24 Larosa, Garrett FR C Long Beach, MS Long Beach 16 Morton, Charles SO IF/OF Eupora, MS Eupora 7 Parks, Stanford SO OF Madison, MS Madison Central 26 Runyan, Levi FR IF Hot Springs, AR Lake Hamilton 9 Seibert, Mac FR IF Cantonment, FL Tate 17 Sellars, Dylan FR RHP Baton Rouge, LA Episcopal 32 Smith, Brandon SO RHP Petal, MS Petal 14 Stanley, Luke SO OF/C Meridian, MS Meridian 1 Vandevere, Tanner SO IF Corpus Christi, TX Calallen 12 Votaw, Scott SO IF/RHP New Hebron, MS Lawrence County 3 Williams, Mike SO IF Houma, LA Terrebone 36 Youngblood, Jonathan SO OF Lexington, KY Lafayette WWW.MERIDIANCC.EDU/SPORTS Meridian Community College 9 THE EAGLES 1 Tanner Vandevere Infield • 5’11” 160 lbs.
