The Monthly Meeting
The NNJR Monthly meeting is held the
second Wednesday of each month at
8pm. The meetings are held at the Villa
on Route 46 in Mountain Lakes, NJ.
Here is what the program looks like for
the next few months:
February
Join us at The Villa on Wednesday, February 11 at 8pm for a presentation by Bob
Knapik about the 24 Hours of Le Mans
and Stuttgart. Don’t miss out on this
interesting presentation and the door
prizes!
March
Kelsy Hill Strategic Alliances / Enthusiast
Engagement for Road and Track and Car
and Driver. Kelsy is also involved in the /
DRIVE series on the NBC Sports channel.
She was flattered to have been asked to
present at NNJR. As such, she has offered to bring along with her a “special”
guest from /DRIVE, R&T and or C&D. She
and I will work together on seeing who
is available to attend. Should be very
interesting.

Auf Der Straße
By Drew Karpinski
NNJR President
Well happy February everyone! It
is that magical transitional time of
the year. All of the trappings of the
Christmas holiday have been cleaned
up around my house and are once
again stored away in large plastic bins
in my basement. The Elf on the Shelf
stayed a little longer this year and did
not make it back to Santa until New
Year’s Eve. The Christmas tree’s presence was shorter than usual, though,
I am a “Christmas tree in March” kind
of guy in some years, but our real
freshly-cut tree would be nothing but
a pile of needles by the second weekend in January, so down it came. As
for New Year’s Eve, the kids made
a valiant effort this year to stay up
rocking with Ryan Seacrest. Fueled
by mini hotdogs, nachos and other
munchies, two of the three actually
made it to the hour. The look on their
little faces as that ball dropped was a
mix of “I made it!” and part “what’s
the purpose of that anyway?” Ahh,
kids, you will have your whole lives to
ponder that question.
February is like the Ohio of months:
There is nothing much remarkable
about it, but you travel through it
to get to places more interesting.
Although to February’s credit, it does
not have to explain what a “buckeye” is. On the other hand, it does
owe us all an apology for Valentine’s
Day. Who was the genius that came
up with overpriced roses, limited
menus at normally good restaurants
and Whitman’s Samplers? Nothing
quite elicits a groan to the extent of
this fine Hallmark Holiday, except
for maybe those women at Spanish
restaurants that come to your table to
ask if you would like the rose for the
pretty lady. If you want another date,
the answer is of course “yes.” Couldn’t
they be more discrete about it and
wait until she is in the bathroom?
What’s next? Will Chuck E Cheese
start coming to your kids’ table with
an armful of puppies to choose from?
As I write these pages on a grey
morning, the Northeast locked in a
mini polar vortex, I really have no idea
where I was going with all of this. I do
have a bunch of small stuff to discuss
and in no particular order...
Did you ever wonder how long a car
battery lasts on a modern truck like
the Cayenne? In my case, it turns out
that the answer is about eight years.
Color me impressed! I do drive the
truck on a daily basis, for the most
part, which helps keep it properly
charged. Eight years is a long life any
way you slice it. It did not go away
in one fell swoop, either. It gave me
plenty of warning that its condition
was in steady decline. The turnover in
recent weeks had become a bit more
chug-chug-chuggy than usual. When
I would leave the heater button on
when parked for 15 minutes or so (You
know you can do that, right? Check
your manual, if not...), the battery and
alternator light would occasionally
come on. “Seems OK,” irresponsible
Drew would think. I did plan to replace
the battery on the weekend where it
actually died and missed it by about
that much. As luck would have it, it
died safely in a parking space in our
Kings shopping center, Starbucks on
one side and STS Tire and Auto Center
on the other.
Changing a battery in a newer Porsche
is apparently no longer a wrench and
socket affair. The battery now resides
under the driver’s seat, accessible only
after entering a secret code and putting
said driver’s seat into battery change
mode. It goes back just a little further
and access is hereby granted by the
German genie. You will need to recode
some things once connected. Used to
be I just had to reset the radio presets,
if I even bothered to do that. Three
hours later, I was back in business on
my way to the next eight years and
80,000 miles.
An interesting side note to the battery
going dead was that I noticed how a
bad battery (that is, a battery steeply
on the decline) can affect the other
check systems of the car. For a few
months, especially on a cold morning,
the four wheel drive system malfunction liight would come on with a loud
“beep!” alerting me to its presence.
Since the battery change there have
been no such problems, even on a 5
degree morning. I had experienced
a similar issue with BMW M3 when
my battery had sat for too long and
was partially discharged. My “Double
Vanos” system would report a trouble
mode and put the car into a very slow,
“limp home” mode - effectively turning
my E46 M3 into a 1981 Rabbit Diesel.
A full charge chased those troubles as
well. Not saying that a good battery
will solve all of your problems - it is not
going to much repair your clutch. Or

Rally 2015
By John Vogt
Everyone acquired their Porsche
for a different reason. Some bought
to play on the curves, they would
reserve their time for DE or auto
cross. Some want to arrive in
something shinny, reserving their
time for a concours event. Some
want to arrive in style at a social
event. Some want to explore the
back roads and want any excuse to
spend time in something that gives
them incredible pleasure. Our rally
program rolls all of the reasons into
one event.
You have seen films of rally drivers sliding side ways, flying through
the air and missing trees by inches.
That is NOT what NNJR has planned
for you. You have heard of time
-speed- distance equations making for tense hard work. That is
NOT what NNJR rallying is about.
You have heard of the arguments
between the driver and the navigator, we will keep you laughing and
entertained.
You will start at an interesting
place that will give you a chance to
6
PORSCHEFORUS FEBRUARY 2015
show off your baby. You will be able
to meet new friends and reacquaint
with old. A continental breakfast
starts the party as you socialize
with your Porsche family. There will
be a brief meeting clarifying the directions and what to look for along
the way.
We score by an exact distance, not
paying attention to the directions
and adding miles will bring points
against you. Along the way you will
look for items or answers to riddles.
This is also used for scoring, but
more importantly keeps you looking around enjoying the scenery.
An example from a previous rally:
Where would an elephant get its
tusks cleaned? We passed “Ivory
Cleaners.” Our roads will be twisty
country roads that are always
paved. The view will always be key.
You will want to keep the directions
to repeat the adventure at a later
date.
Once you have completed your
drive, the destination will be a restaurant/bar to relax and compare
stories of what you have seen and
experienced. A fine meal will be
part of the festivities. Trophies are
awarded to the expert classes, the
novice classes and even the dead
last but finished.
We have eliminated the timed
element of the rally. Insurance
regulations limit people only over
18 in a timed event. Without timing, all ages can partake with a
signed waver. We now see Father
son, Mother daughter, etc. teams.
We also do not limit the amount of
participants per car. This event is
open to family fun.
If you have not already joined
us for one of our events, try it out
and you will be hooked. This will
reinforce another reason why you
joined the Porsche family.

Hitting Apexes
By Tom Iervolino
Track Chair
I do not know about you, but I am
pretty psyched up about our 2015
DE season approaching and getting
back on track. Our schedule is set
for 2015 and by the time you read
this, we would have just held our
Instruction to High Performance
Driving seminar (January 25). It is
at this seminar we introduce new
drivers (and potential drivers) to
the world of DE, what is it all about
and how to partake in these driving
events. If you missed it, here are
some of the highlights regarding
preparing for a DE event.
PREPARING FOR A HIGH PERFORMANCE DRIVING SCHOOL
It is more fun than you can imagine!!
Participating in a High Performance Driver Education event
8
PORSCHEFORUS FEBRUARY 2015
(HPDE or more commonly known as
just DE) is one of the coolest things
you can do with your car. If you have
had that experience you know the
fun and challenge of driving your
car at speed on a race track. As you
progress in speed and skill, it takes a
little more preparation. If you have
never done a HPDE (High Performance Driving Event) you might
have some questions about how to
prepare.
HPDE for Beginners
Your first Driver Education event
is more about preparing as a driver
than preparing your car with special
equipment. Instructors will typically tell you to refrain from doing
anything special to your car, other
than basic preparation. That is good
sound advice.
PREPARING AS A DRIVER: It is
important for your head to be in
the right place. Come prepared
to LEARN more than PERFORM.
Learning, however, will turn into
performance. You will learn several
things about safety, behavior on
the track and how to develop good
habits. Getting plenty of sleep and
drinking lots of water is an example. Performance Driving Schools
use flags for communication, much
like a race. You will learn about
those. You will need a helmet, but
if you do not have one, NNJR has
loaner helmets that we bring in to
the track. If you do borrow one,
it would be considerate to use a
balaclava (head sock). Other than
that, simply relax and get ready
to have fun with the other drivers
in your group. Speaking of groups,
we segregate our drivers by virtue
of their experience and their ability
to demonstrate the skills needed
for that group. These groups are
color coded and are Green (Beginners), Yellow, Blue, White, Black and
Red (Instructors). At each DE event,
you are driving with other drivers
that are at your skill level (your run
group). The Green through Blue drivers all have an Instructor in the right
seat when they are on track.
PREPARING YOUR CAR: For
your first DE events, forget about
performance upgrades. It is actually to your advantage to learn
by driving a car in standard trim.
You will, however, need to have
a safety inspection performed on
your car. Not to worry here as we
hold free Tech Inspection sessions,
approximately two weeks before
each event. The schedule and location for these are published here
in P4Us and are posted on line on
our web site. If you cannot make it
to the free session, you can go to
your local Porsche dealer or any of
the garages listed on our website
(friends of NNJR section) and have
your car “Tech’ed”. You should also
check out our Tech Form (on-line)
and review the list of items that
will be checked at the tech session.
Please bring this form with you to
the tech as it needs to be completed
and signed. Amongst many things,
your suspension components will
be checked as well as you brakes.
Your brakes might need attention as
your pads might not be thick enough
for the track and may need to be
replaced. At this stage it has more
to do with heat buildup than wear
and performance. Your brake fluid
might need to be replaced in order
to handle the heat of high performance driving and it will need to be
changed within one year of the
event. Although you generally
do not want to consider performance upgrades in the beginning,
it could help you to use racing
brake fluid.
For the new DE driver, please
refer to our FAQ tab in the DE section of our web site for additional
details and information.
HPDE for Returning Students
If you have already participated
in a high performance driving
school you know the drill. As
you develop skill and speed your
car will require more preparation
and you will be considering performance upgrades.
PREPARING YOURSELF: Since you
have done a few High Performance
Driving Schools you are probably
thinking about doing more, and
maybe even making it part of your
lifestyle. Here are a few things to
consider:
HELMETS: If you started with a
helmet at a low price point, it is a
good idea to upgrade to a higher
quality “brain bucket.” You know
the saying, “How much is your brain
worth?” I advise to never buy a helmet on-line. The proper fit is a key
element of how it provides protection much less how comfortable it is.
HARNESSES: Staying firmly fixed in
your seat adds comfort and helps
you perform better on the track. I
have seen various ways people go
about trying to stay firmly fixed (i.e.
the use of a CG-Lock on your OEM
seat belts), however, you will want
to upgrade to a more extensive harness system at some point. This will
necessitate that you get seats that

DAVE SCOTT
Dave started his career as a sworn special agent with
the Diplomatic Security Service, US Department
of State. In his 14 years there, he was assigned to
American embassies in Malaysia, Germany, Great
Britain, and Italy. He was privileged to be part of
the Secretary of State’s personal detail as primary
close-protection driver. It was in this assignment
that he developed a very high level of skill in tactical,
high-risk, high-threat-environment driving and close
protection. After a number of years as a specialized
high-risk private security contractor, Dave discovered
he had an aptitude for sports car racing, and began
to race professionally full time, as well as coach other
racers. He has raced in IMSA, the old Grand Am and
Grand Am Cup (now part of the IMSA/United Sports
Car merger), PCA, BMWCCA, SCCA, and NASA. He still
does some racing, but primarily focuses on coaching
other drivers all over North America.

Euro-Tire
After several years of absence, we return to Euro-Tire for this
timely workshop. Bill Bloomfield will share his knowledge of
the technical advancements and differences in all kinds of tires
including green tires and R Compound tires. He will talk about the
various aspects of suspension such as balance, camber, shocks,
corner weighting and street vs track alignment. What are the
pros and cons of stock wheels vs racing wheels? Is a 21” wheel big
enough or should I drop back to an 18 or 17” wheel? Ask Bill, he
will help you figure out the system for you.

going to get serious about this sport,
then please get serious about safety
first.
BRAKES: Getting a set of track pads
is a common performance upgrade,
but it is important to use the right
combination as you switch from
street to track and back. The wrong
combination could leave deposits on
your rotors that will degrade their
performance. Please discuss this
with your favorite Porsche shop.
TIRES: This is a common upgrade.
For your first year in DE, I would
stick with street tires as they provide
the needed feedback and are more
“user friendly” (more predictable)
when you are just learning. Once
you are ready to go to higher performance tires (i.e. DOT R Comp),
consider a second set of wheels for
these sticky tires for the track. That
does not mean that you should
go straight to racing slicks. You can
use a set of high performance tires
that are DOT approved. You can use
some of them to get you to the track
but discuss this with you tire retailer
or your favorite Porsche garage.
Alternatively, you can use dedicated
track tires, bring them with you and
mount them at the track (welcome
to the slippery slope).
OTHER UPGRADES: By now you
have thought of other ways to feed
your high performance driving addiction. Racing seats and roll bars
might come to mind, along with
other safety equipment. It never really ends, but it really is a great form

The 14th annual “Gathering of the Faithful” is an opportunity for all members to get together after a long,
lonely winter and to re-kindle acquaintances. This event is a throwback to years gone by when you woke up on
a Sunday morning, got in your Porsche and took a drive to the local garage to sit around with friends and enjoy
a cup of coffee and a donut or two while talking Porsche and other assorted matters of interest.
We plan on using this traditional social gathering to introduce our 2015 Concours program and hold a judges
seminar. The meeting will be in two parts. First we will review the 2015 schedule of events and at 11:30am we
will hold our judges seminar.
The seminar is open to all. Whether or not you plan to judge, you will find this part of the meeting very
informative. If you plan on showing your Porsche, this will help you to better prepare for competition. If you
plan on becoming a judge, this seminar will be a great learning experience that will guide you though the
process of competitive concours judging.
Please join us for a morning of good cheer, good chow (breakfast will be served by our host John Vogt) and a
very informative program.

Part 1 Planning the Trip to LeMans
This chronical has to do with my passion for LeMans
and the history of Porsche at LeMans. The last time
Porsche won the overall victory at LeMans was in
1998, which was coincidently the 50th Anniversary of
Porsche. The winning car in 1998 was a Porsche GT1
with Alan McNish as the lead driver. Porsche entered
two GT1s that year and they came in first and second,
a “Doppelsieg fur Porsche”. McNish drove car #26. It
was my good fortune to attend the 24 hour race in
1998, my first trip to Europe. My wife and I visited
Paris, the Loire Valley and of course LeMans during
our first French adventure. My wife is a good sport in
supporting my Porsche addiction and she and I were
awake for 22 of the 24 hour race. We went back to the
car around 2am for a nap during the ever so common
evening showers at LeMans. After the race we went
to a chateau in the Loire Valley for the next leg of our
vacation. Upon checking into our room we decided on
a short snooze before dinner. We slept through dinner,
breakfast and lunch the following day. But we there the
day before to see McNish pass the crippled Toyota at
Arnage corner to take the lead and the eventual win.
In June of 2011 Porsche announced that it would
again compete for the overall win. It had been 13
years of Porsche not competing in the top class. Well
I said to myself that I had to be there at LeMans for
the debut of the Porsche 919 in 2014. The planning
for the trip started almost immediately. Having the
experience in 1998 was a great help in making 2014
an almost flawless experience. This time the plan
was for me to attend the race with two close Porsche
friends (Jimmy and David) and then to meet my wife,
my daughter and my granddaughter in Paris for a
post-race experience. Rebecca my granddaughter was
16 and just completed her third year of high school
French. I was thrilled about the prospect of offering
Rebecca the ultimate cultural immersion in Paris. The
serious planning started in August of 2013 with trying
to find lodging for three guys. The City of LeMans and
the surrounding area were booked solid as most serious race fans come every year and book their rooms
on a continuing basis. The British come over in mass
with 60,000 or more fans but luckily they bring their
cars across the English Channel and camp out at the
track for a week of partying. The British invasion is
a story in itself. For strategic reasons I wanted to be
west or northwest of LeMans. Bingo I found a “panoramic” room (meaning that it would be able to sleep
three guys) at the Hotel de Paris in Laval, about 50
miles west of the track. Since there was a 130 km/hr
Auto-route between the two cities, the trip would be
less than an hour which made sense. Laval is a historic
and scenic river town off the beaten path for tourists
so it sounded like a great place to stay Wednesday
evening through Friday evening. The next item was
airfares which are always costly in June. I kept looking
for that sweet time when the tickets would be at their
cheapest. No such luck and finally I pulled the trigger
with Air Canada with a stop in Montreal. Air Canada
turned out to be a great airline experience, at least
compared to the American carriers.
I knew from past experience and research on the
web that grandstand tickets for LeMans are very difficult to get, especially the grandstands with the best
views. The 24 Hours of LeMans is run by the French
Auto Club of the West (the ACO) and its ticketing policies are strange at best with lots of insiders getting the
good seats. During the 24 hour race, most of the time
is spent wandering around the circuit but you really
need a seat for the start of the race and in case of
inclement weather. The French call their grandstands

“tribunes” and they all have cover to keep you dry. I
kept checking the ACO website to see when tickets
go on sale. Research told me that the time is in early
December but no specific date was given. I lucked out
again and caught one of the opening days. I was able
to purchase high level seats in the Panorama Tribune
which was my first choice. Panorama is adjacent to the
Dunlop Bridge with views from the start finish straight
all the way down to Tertre Rouge. The seats are in
front of the Dunlop Curves and you can see down the
hill beyond the bridge to the Esses of the Forest. I also
bought the general admission tickets and parking at
the same time that I got the seats. I knew from 1998
to buy parking at the Rouge parking lot which is a five
minute walk from the main entrance near the Dunlop
Bridge.
The LeMans Circuit is 14 km long (8.5 miles) but only
a portion is open for spectators. The viewing areas
stretch from the Porsche Curves to Tertre Rouge corner, a distance of about three miles. The entire 3.5
mile Mulsanne straight is off limits to spectators as is
the run from the Mulsanne corner to the Indianapolis
corner. There are separate viewing enclosures at the
Mulsanne corner and the Indianapolis/Arnage complex. However, from the main spectator area you have
to get into a car and drive to the Villages of Arnage or
Mulsanne to get to the enclosures. The local roads are
not well marked and it is quite a challenge to get to the
remote viewing areas, especially at night. I understand
that all this track layout terminology makes no sense
unless you Google a track map, which I highly recommend.
We were thrown a curveball during the winter of
2014 with lots of snow and lots of snow days for kids
in school. Rebecca’s school used up the allotted snow
days and extended the school year by three more days.
She would have missed her final exams if the girls left
for Paris on schedule. I delayed their departure three
days so they would arrive in Paris on the Thursday
morning after the LeMans weekend. Well the guys now
have an extra three days in Europe and what to do
with that extra time? Road trip to Germany. It was an
easy decision to drive to Stuttgart and visit the Porsche
Museum and tour the factory. The factory tour must
be booked months in advance. Fortunately, the PCA
National Office has a liaison at the factory and the arrangements were made for the Tuesday after LeMans.
We also planned a trip to the Mercedes Museum and a
cruise along the Rhine River during our “bonus” time in
Germany.
About two weeks before the trip, I loaded in all our
destinations into the Garmin as “saved places”. This
trick took away all of the worries of driving in Europe.
My first saved place was the Rouge parking lot at the
track and the second was the Hotel de Paris in Laval.
I had eight days of destinations in my trusty Garmin
and we were ready to navigate the highways and back
roads of France and Germany.
All the pieces were in place and we couldn’t wait to
start our journey which I promoted as the ultimate
“bucket list” trip.
Part 2: The Preliminaries.
Jimmy and I left from Newark for Paris on June 10 on
our Air Canada flight. David used miles on his US Air
account and flew Envoy class from Philadelphia. Both
flights landed within a half-hour at CDG Airport just to
the north of Paris. We met at the car rental counter
during the time that I was waiting for our car. It seems
that the French have a different philosophy regarding customer service, even with the American name
brands in car rentals. I completed the paperwork at the
counter and I was told to sit down and wait for my car.
An hour later I politely asked the customer representative about the status of my car. He replied that it was
not in the parking lot yet. I followed him out to the
parking lot to see for myself. It was pretty much empty.
The customer rep could not tell me when the reserved
car would arrive. He pointed to a large vehicle and said
we could have that one, the last car in the parking lot
- or we could wait. I jumped on the offer and got the
best possible car for our trip, a 9 passenger VW transporter. It had a diesel engine so the gas mileage would
be good and with three seats, we each had our own
bed for nighttime at LeMans. My original reservation
was for a seven passenger station wagon but the VW
FEBRUARY 2015 PORSCHEFORUS

was much better
suited for our
purposes. We
dubbed the car
“Chateau Volkswagen”. I am
getting ahead
of myself but on
the Autobahn
we got the Chateau up to 165 km/hr. (104mph).
LeMans is about 125 miles southeast of Paris. I
plugged in the Rouge parking lot into the Garmin and
we were off. Porsche spent millions in marketing its
return to LeMans. It was done under the banner of
“Mission 2014 – Our Return”. About forty miles from
LeMans on the main Auto-route, we came across an
Esso gas station that had been transformed into a
wraparound billboard for Mission 2014. We knew we
were in for something special.
We stopped for lunch and made it to the Rouge
parking lot just before 3pm. The on-track activities
started at 4pm for Wednesday and Thursday’s practice
and qualifying and the sessions lasted until midnight.
The Mulsanne straight is the main highway between
LeMans and Tours and it is kept open for public traffic
until an hour or two before the race cars start practice.
Our timing was good to orient ourselves and head over
the Dunlop pedestrian bridge to the Village. The Village
has a number of eating places, stores to buy swag and
28
PORSCHEFORUS FEBRUARY 2015
manufactures’ showcases for their products. All the
car manufactures had displays including Porsche who
had a tent with most of its significant LeMans winning
cars. The Porsche boutique was underwhelming and
way too expensive.
When the cars entered the track we were back at
the Dunlop curves to watch the first practice session.
All was good until one of the three Audi’s crashed
heavily and caused a red flag situation. By that time
we had wondered down to Tertre Rouge corner with
a glimpse of the start of the Mulsanne straight. Our
plan was to leave the track early since we were jetlagged and needed to preserve our stamina for the
24 hours. We made it to
Laval in about an hour
and checked into the hotel, sans English speaking
clerks at the front desk.
Somehow we did get to
our room. After a great
French dinner at a restaurant next to the hotel
we retired for the night.
The room had electrically
operated light-dimming
shades that worked very
well.
They worked so well
that we slept until noon
when housekeeping

knocked on our door. We each thought it still was the
middle of the night. Our sightseeing plans for the day
went to hell so we enjoyed a casual riverside lunch at
an outdoor café and headed back to LeMans. I wanted
the guys to see the enclosure at Indianapolis and Arnage corners so we headed there first. There were no
signs in the Village of Arnage (which by the way was
hopping with race fans) and it took us an hour to finally
get there. We watched practice for about an hour. The
big TV screen across the track showed the two Porsche
919s in first and second place. That boded well for the
race. The 919s eventually qualified second and forth,
not bad for a car still in development. The Arnage corner brought back memories of the sputtering Toyota in
1998 and the pass for the lead by Mc Nish’s Porsche.
We arrived at the main enclosure and walked around
the Village and the main grandstands over the pits. All
the seats were open during practice and you could get
great views looking directly down into the pit boxes.
The main grandstands on either side of the pit straight
created a noise tunnel that amplifies the roar of the
engines as they sped down the straight. It was really
loud and shrill; loud enough to cause hearing damage if
you did not wear earplugs.
The highlight of the evening was the Grand Mar32
PORSCHEFORUS FEBRUARY 2015
nier crepes in the Village. There are huge bottles of
Grand Marnier on the counter and you get to pour as
much as you want onto the crepe. The crepes were
outstanding and very French. We watched qualifying
until dark which comes after 10pm. On the way back
to Laval I was passing a truck on the Auto-route when
suddenly there was a flash of light in my face. Yikes, I
got my picture taken by a speed camera at midnight.
Subsequently, I received a letter from the car rental
company saying that I was speeding and that the
“French Authorities” would be in contact with me. So
far, six months later, the Authorities have not gotten
around to advising me that I was exceeding the 130
km/hr. speed limit. When we got back to the hotel, we
each set an alarm for the next morning.
Friday at LeMans is different by tradition. There are
no on-track activities. At 6pm there is a “Parade of the
Pilots” in the central part of the City of LeMans. Our
plans were to skip LeMans and head north through
Normandy to the coast. Our first stop was Mont Saint
Michel, an abbey and monastery dating back to the
eighth-century. The Mont is located on an island within
a tidal estuary and is one of the most popular tourist
attractions in all of France.
We did a quick tour but had to cut it short in order
to get back to the car and travel 75 miles to Bayeux
for our 1pm tour of the D-day Beaches. We met Phillip our tour guide at the railroad station. Phillip was an
ex-patriot Brit in his late 20’s. He was dressed in shorts
and tee-shirt with scruffy hair. At the beginning, Phillip acted like he had 2-3 Red Bulls to start his day but
eventually settled down and was quite informative. He
took us to Pointe du Hoc, the site of a German artillery
battery on top of a 100 foot cliff. The US Rangers had to
scale the cliff under fire to eventually take out the German position and enable the allied troops to reach the
beaches. We toured Omaha Beach and the American
Cemetery, both awe-inspiring. (Parts 3 & 4 to come...)

Gearbox Tech at PMR
By Grant Lenahan
On November 8 Will DiGiovanni
hosted an excellent and information
packed tech at his race shop in Long
Valley NJ, focusing on transmissions
and in fact the entire drive train aft
of the motor. Thanks Will for hosting and spending so much of your
Saturday afternoon with us, when,
imagine, you could have been raking
leaves.
We talked about motors too
This well – attended event (approx.
30 members) ran from 1 to nearly
4pm, with a formal presentation,
lots of Q&A and a general discussion
toward the end. Will had a 986/996
era 6-speed transmission open for
all to see. This formed the basis of
a very visual presentation and Will
moved through the operation of the
box, identifying individual components along the way, and discussed
both their function, failure modes,
34
PORSCHEFORUS FEBRUARY 2015
and variants from both earlier and
newer cars.
In addition to the open case 986
6-speed, Will also arranged a large assortment of parts on a table, both for
us to look over, handle and inspect,
but also to be used as props for his
lecture. Arranged were gears, pinion
shafts, input shafts, synchronizer
rings, CV joints, differentials and various other bits and pieces.
Will spent quite a bit of time on
differentials, in part because they are
rarely well understood except for a
very few and also because most of
our care either came with an open
differential, or in a few cases came
with a factory differential that is
simply not up to the strain of regular track use. Will walked through
basic operation of a differential (with
a demo!) and then the objective
and methods of locking, and finally
discussed the various options to add,
rebuild and upgrade limit slip functionality. You can easily see in the
pictures where the differential drops
into the transaxle housing as a unit
and then connects to the drive shafts.
The output shaft bone is connected
to the….
Similarly, Will spent a lot of time
discussing failure mechanisms in
regular gearboxes – first on the typical 9X6/9X7 6-speeds, but also differences for the G50, 015, Audi 01E
and PDK variants. Interestingly, Will
noted that he has not had to open
and rebuild a PDK-era gearbox yet.
That speaks well to their quality and
durability, even if they are relatively
new. As expected, the primary issues
appear to be synchronizer wear and
shift forks, with the gears and bearings being more trouble free, or at
least for a longer time.
We did learn, not of any great surprise, that when the time for repairs
or rebuild does arrive, it will not be
cheap. It pays to treat your transmission nicely. According to Will, a new/
rebuilt unit from Porsche with a core
exchange is about $9600 and he can
do a “proper” rebuild for about half
of that. Another metric he tossed out
was that once the transaxle is out of
the car and on a stand or bench, it
involves about 12-15 hours to complete a tear-down and rebuild. And
then re-install. SO we can estimate
that the cost of any repair is roughly
$2000 plus the cost of replacement
parts. Doing them one at a time
could get costly.
From Will’s advice and anecdotes, it
seems that the best two things one
can do to avoid large repair bills is
change the gear oil and do not abuse
them. Will recommends changing the
gear oil every season for a hard-used
track or race car and he had samples
of new and used fluid side by side to
make his point. One looked like apple
juice, the other like an unappetizing concoction of very virgin olive oil
(dark, layered green) mixed with used
motor oil. Neither won any aroma
tastings, either.
On the “don’t abuse me”, Will told
multiple stories about racers and
regular drivers who broke forks, wore
synchros and otherwise damaged
goods. He also pointed out that if one
manages to break off a small piece of
debris, it will go through the tightly
packed mess (look at those photos
closely) and mangle the goods. So
do not break off little pieces of your
transmission, please.
On to the clutch assembly, Will
walked us through the flywheelclutch disk-pressure plate-shaft
assembly and showed how it assembled and worked. He also pointed out
the weaknesses in OEM clutch disks
(springs) and flywheels (dual mass
assembly) and discussed the virtues
and side effects of the single-piece
replacements that are available. In
short they have more NVH at engage-
ment but are lighter, stronger and
have no obvious failure mode aside
from material wear. Apparently Sachs
makes a widely available kit for most
of our cars. I wonder if I have one
in mine…. Gotta check that P/N. It
certainly makes the NVH racket!
Somewhere in the middle we had a
good discussion and Q&A about the
new PDK based boxes – both the actual PDK and the derived manual. We
discussed the multiple input shafts
and clutches and how solenoids
engage them – and the fact that they
are so much better that the sanctioning bodies make PDK cars run with a
weight ballast penalty.
I am sure I overlooked technical
gems that Will shared this afternoon
– there were so many on so many
related topics. Again, thanks to Will
and for those who did not attend –
please do next time; it was time well
spent with good info, good chips and
good friends.

sors, systems and computers are packed into these newer
Porsches and they need juice to properly work - including
the newer electronic clutches of PDK-equipped cars. So if
you are not driving your Porsche on a regular basis, you
may want to have a trickle charger connected. (Just make
sure you get the proper one that does not overcharge, such
as a Schumacher or a Battery Tender Plus.)
Speaking of systems on your Porsche, are you signed up
for the annual Tech Tactics seminar? Do you know what
Tech Tactics is? Put it this way - I have been a member of
PCA since 2004 and I just made it to my first Tech Tactics
last year. Basically, it is like a cross between a Porsche car
show and a series of technical seminars, broken down so
that even the least technically-inclined of our group can understand it (that would be me). It is held at Porsche’s own
Training Center near Bethlehem, PA - an easy ride out Route
78 on a weekend morning. Porsche takes our group seriously, too, and they fly in technical experts direct from Germany to explain aspects of technology in the cars. It is a full
day including lunch. This year it is being help on Saturday
and Sunday February 28 and March 1 (you pick which day
you prefer where you enroll - Saturday sells out fast). Sign
up is on Motorsportreg.com (a site well known to many of
our members) and the event is Tech Tactics East 2015.
I know I wrote an entire article last month essentially
about setting up your 2015 calendar and making goals.

That said by the time you read this, it is likely that the Car

sells out fast! Really really fast! It is a great event where you
get a day long taste of what you and your Porsche can do on
a skid pad, in a slalom and in various braking and car control
exercises. Led by instructors and chief instructors, it is a day
you will not forget. I did my first one in 1993 and I still remember it. You just need to bring you and your car - we have

will likely be in early May this year at the Meadowlands.
