Company Profile
Meritec, an Electronic Connector and Cable Assembly Division of Ohio
Associated Enterprises, LLC, was founded in 1966. Over the decades, Meritec
has established itself in the Global High-speed and Electronic Interconnect
Industry. Formerly part of AP Products Inc., The Company’s origins can be traced
back to IC Test Clips. Used by technicians for testing various sized integrated
circuit packages, these small, insert-molded devices were cutting edge to a
growing Industry. The test clips were followed by a line of solderless electronic
breadboards also used by technicians and engineers to prototype new circuits.
They too became successful, and numerous other product lines and thousands
of part numbers followed. The Company’s internal ability to design, tool, build
and sell products that solve significant problems for Customers quickly lead to
growth into electronic connectors and cable assemblies in the 1970s.
By 1977, the Company found itself selling and competing in several different
markets. In order to focus efforts on the different needs of each market, a
“Parent Company”, was established known today as Associated Enterprises
and the creation of necessary divisions, subsidiaries and licensees evolved.
These manufacturing organizations, located in Ohio and California in the USA,
Germany, England, France and Australia were created during the following
eight years. In 1989, The Parent Company established the Meritec ( Meritorious
Technology) Division located in Painesville, Ohio, and consolidated its resources
primarily to address solving significant problems Customers experience in
working with high frequency, high performance and tight contact pitch
applications. Then, in 1999, The Parent Company acquired majority interest in
Joy Signal Technology, LLC located in Chico, California. Joy, now a Meritec Sister Company,
is a leading supplier of interconnection products primarily sold to the Automated Test
Equipment (ATE) Industry. More recently, Meritec acquired Connectors Unlimited and MoldTech, thus expanding their footprint in The Industry.

Introducing
Meritec’s Hercules Interconnect System embedded in the rugged circular MIL-DTL-38999L
Series III shell provides both a durable and high-bandwidth interconnect scheme suitable
for Military, Aerospace and ruggedized COTS high-bandwidth applications not previously
accommodated by Industry standard interconnects. The rapid emergence
of high-speed switched serial fabric backplanes in the rugged embedded
computer market has created a need for a connector system capable of
supporting serial I/O at full bandwidth between platforms. New backplane
Open Standards, Open Markets
architectures are supporting link speeds in excess of 5 Gb/s. The desire
of system designers to implement these speeds and to operate independent boxes or
platforms at full system bandwidth requires a new generation of high bandwidth (10 Gb/s)
ruggedized I/O connectors. The VITA 76.0 standard addresses the HERCULES Interconnect
System, that will support this bandwidth (>10 Gb/s) while also meeting the necessary signal
density emerging in the ruggedized embedded systems.

The VITA 76.0 Standard defines a ruggedized high-bandwidth copper I/O connector system
that consists of bulkhead receptacles and cable end plugs. The bulkhead receptacle can be
different styles: PCB press-fit tail, PCB solder tail and cable pigtail. The mounting mechanism of
the bulkhead receptacle can be flange or jam-nut style. The cable end plugs can also embrace
alternative technologies: copper, hybrid copper, active copper and active optical (AO).
The cable end plug attaches external cables to chassis bulkhead walls via the bulkhead
receptacles. The cable end plug is secured to the bulkhead receptacles via a turn-style collar
ring MIL-DTL-38999. Various styles of cable egress are available for different applications.
Examples include:
1. Single chassis to single chassis interconnect (e.g. computer to computer via 4-lane PCIe)
2. Single chassis to multiple chassis interconnect (e.g. computer to multiple peripherals
such as SATA drive, video monitor and USB
Cable egress from the cable end plug is
beyond the scope of the VITA 76.0 Standard.
NASA’s Atmosphere-One Test for Hercules
The base VITA 76.0 Specification defines
the bulkhead-receptacles and copper based
cable end plugs. Subsequent VITA 76.0
Specifications will define cable end plug
assemblies with active optical engines.

Conclusions A 1 meter, 28 AWG, Size 23 Meritec Hercules Plug Cable Assembly was mated with the Size 23
®
Meritec Hercules Flange Mount Board Receptacles with 0.100" press-fit tails. The board
receptacles were mounted to the Meritec Hercules SI test boards.
®

Measurements of the setup were taken and recorded, and they include the cable assembly,
board connectors and test board vias. Insertion loss through the 1 meter cable and two pairs
of mated cable and board connectors was less than –9 dB up to 10 GHz (see Figure 1). At 5
GHz, which represents the Niquist frequency (1st harmonic) for a 10 Gb/s signal, the setup has
roughly –4.5 dB insertion loss. The 1 meter, unterminated, bulk cable has roughly –3.1 dB loss
at this frequency. This means that the two pairs of connectors have a total of –1.4 dB of loss at 5
GHz, or –0.7 dB of loss for a single mated cable plug and board receptacle.
Also, the cable assembly is well within the InfiniBand 10 Gb/s ( QDR ) insertion loss
specification. The cable assembly and board receptacle setup also exhibits very good return
loss of less then –10 dB up to 7 GHz (see Figure 2). The return loss present is also within the
InfiniBand 10 Gb/s ( QDR ) return loss specification.
Crosstalk measurements were also performed on one victim pair surrounded by seven
aggressor pairs (see Figure 3). This setup represents the worse possible condition. The first
measurements performed were with the aggressors coming from the near-end while the
second measurements were performed with the aggressors coming from the far-end. The
power sum of all the aggressors was then calculated for each of the near-end and the
far-end aggressors. These measurements differ depending on which pairs are designated
as transmit pairs and which ones are designated as receive pairs. Crosstalk coming from
the seven near-end aggressors was around less than –30 dB up to 5 GHz (see Figure 4).

An eye diagram at 10 Gb/s data rate running through the mated cable assembly and board
receptacles setup was also simulated. The eye is wide open, and it has 560 mV height, 89.8
ps width and exhibits a total jitter of 10.2 ps.
Differential impedance through the connector system is between 96 and 104 ohms at 100
ps incoming pulse risetime (20–80%) and well within the InfiniBand specification limits of
100 ±10 ohms.
