WELCOME TO THE MOONLIGHT!
Dear Friends,
We welcome you to the second show in our 36th Season
and are thrilled to be producing the enduring family
classic Peter Pan. This magical show hasn’t been seen in
our Amphitheatre in 20 years and we believe it is time
to share the story of the boy who wouldn’t grow up with
our audiences once again!
Please allow us to thank so many that make every year
Steven Glaudini and Daniel Kays
memorable. First and foremost, we thank our subscribers
welcome you to the Summer Season
and ticket buyers. As you fill the Amphitheatre with open
minds and open hearts, it is a privilege to bring these shows every summer to you. Your
attendance keeps cultural arts alive in the City of Vista and provides great trust to our
City Council who support our program every year. Please take the time to thank our City
Council when they are in attendance with you.
We also stand side by side with our fundraising partner, the Moonlight Cultural
Foundation, and say thank you to the corporate and show sponsors and the many
individual donors for their contributed support. Corporate and donor contributions are
vital to the health of the Moonlight. If you see a foundation staff or board member in
attendance, please make sure to thank them as well for their continued focus in keeping
our shows high in performance value, accessible in price, and relevant in content.
Now, sit back as we take you to a “place where dreams are born and time is never
planned”…where Pirates, Mermaids, Indians, Faeries, and Lost Boys roam. A place nicely
crammed with hardly any space between one adventure and another. A place where you
never grow up. Have a great evening under the stars and we look forward to seeing you
at the Moonlight for the remainder of the Season!
Sincerely,
Steven GlaudiniDaniel J. Kays

Chris Mann & Shoshana Bean in Concert
NOVEMBER 12 | 8 PM
Chris Mann: Golden
Join Chris Mann for a spectacular musical evening
featuring songs from the Golden Age of Broadway, the
Great American Songbook and his chart-topping albums.
Mann rose to fame as Christina Aguilera’s finalist on NBC’s
The Voice. Since then, his debut album, Roads, hit #1 on
Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart, he starred in his own PBS
television special: A Mann For All Seasons and is currently starring as The Phantom in The Spectacular
New Production of The Phantom of the Opera National Broadway Tour.
Critics hail Mann as “a bona fide breakout star” and “the best “Phantom of the Opera” since
Michael Crawford!”
Enjoy an evening of beloved hits and new favorites for one night only at the Moonlight!
New, up and coming Shoshana Bean is magnificent and stirring, always original, heartfelt, and quite
funny when needed. See her at Moonlight and you will be able to say you saw her when . . .
Over the years, Broadway star and recording artist Shoshana Bean has become synonymous with the
word “soulful”. Bean is best known for her roles in the Broadway smash hits Wicked and Hairspray,
and a stellar performance alongside Brian McKnight on the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. But since
the release of her debut solo album, Superhero, it is said that Bean can match Barbra Streisand’s
range and challenge Madonna’s style – and this is just the beginning of her career!

includes dinner and the show.
Molly Ringwald in Concert
JANUARY 21, 2017 | 2 PM & 8 PM
Broadway audiences embraced her as Sally Bowles
in Cabaret, as well as in Enchanted April and Modern
Orthodox. But what many people may not realize is
that this Broadway leading lady has a bona fide classic
jazz background: her father is blind jazz pianist Bob
Ringwald. Recognized as an icon of the 80’s with breakout
performances in Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and
Pretty in Pink, Molly Ringwald will share her sultry pipes in a
concert featuring great jazz standards.
Mandy harvey
FEBRUARY 11, 2017 | 2 PM & 8 PM
In 2009, Mandy’s first album, Smile was released, to widespread
praise. Since then, she has released two more critically acclaimed
albums: After You’ve Gone and All of Me. Though her hearing
loss is profound, her timing, pitch, and passion are perfect. That’s
why the media, including NBC Nightly News, have taken notice.
The Los Angeles Times raved, “From the first note, Mandy Harvey
tames her audience into stunned appreciation as she glides
pitch-perfect from breathy jazz standard to growling blues….
At show’s end the audience is on its feet.”

PETER PAN DIRECTOR’S NOTES: A BRIEF HISTORY
Since the early 1900's, the character of Peter Pan has withstood the test of time. What
began as a London storyteller's thoughts in Kensington Gardens evolved into one of
the most produced and revered characters, and plays, of the 20th Century. In 1902,
Peter Pan was first mentioned in a book by J. M. Barrie entitled The Little White Bird.
The character was popular with the author and often became the lead character in
the skits and games Barrie played with family friends, the Davies. By 1904, Peter was
perfected and became the lead character in a full length play.
The play was titled Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up. Barrie's script was
originally rejected on the basis that it was too elaborate to be produced. There were
too many large set changes and the technical aspect of flying seemed too complicated
to stage. However, with the confidence of Barrie's friend and producer, Charles
Frohman, Barrie mounted the first production of Peter Pan on December 27, 1904,
at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London. Not knowing how popular Peter Pan would
become, Barrie was unaware that this first production would set theatrical traditions for
the play for generations to come. A few traditions that are associated with Peter Pan are
Mr. Darling and Captain Hook being played by the same actor, Nana and the Crocodile
being played by the same actor and, perhaps the most famous of all, the cross-gender
casting of a female as Peter Pan. Women would go on to play the lead role in Peter
Pan for almost 50 years. The first actress to play Peter was 37 year-old, Nina Boucicault,
sister to the play’s first director, Don Boucicault. Peter Pan was considered a role for
a woman until a 1952 German production cast a male in the role. The English didn’t
break this tradition until the 1980’s.
Throughout the 20th century, different productions evolved from the original Barrie
play. However, no two productions are more responsible for the endurance of Peter
Pan's popularity over the past 50 years than the 1953 animated Disney feature and
the 1954 Mary Martin Broadway Musical. Although these two adaptations vary widely
from Barrie's original storyline, they seem to form most people’s memories of Peter
Pan. While music was always a part of Peter Pan productions, a full-blown musical was
never attempted until 1954. Jerome Robbins saw great potential in Peter Pan and
did not want to give up the idea of a full-length Broadway musical. So songwriting
team Moose Charlap and Carolyn Leigh were approached by Robbins (who would
also direct and choreograph the Martin production) to write the score for the musical.
Realizing the size of the project, Robbins later hired noted lyricists Betty Comden and
Adolph Green, and composer Jule Styne to write additional music for the upcoming
production. With the new songs, Mary Martin in the role of Peter Pan, and Cyril Ritchard
as Hook, the show was a great success. After a full season on Broadway, the production
was filmed for television and was broadcast seven times between the years 1955 and
1973. The televised production brought world-wide popularity to the musical and
created an American tradition. Revivals would later star Sandy Duncan and one who
became synonymous with the role, Cathy Rigby.
The story of Peter Pan will always be performed and continue to evolve, but no matter
what shape or form he takes, “The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up” will remain a
constant in our lives, from the youngest to the oldest of children.
I feel I’ve come full circle with this play as I made my Moonlight debut 20 years ago
as Smee in 1996’s Peter Pan. To direct this piece has been an utter delight and has
brought out that child in me. Feel free to let your inner child out as well…just think
happy thoughts!
Steve

Dear Friends,
Thanks to donor commitment, we were able to
end fiscal year 2015 2% above revenue goal
and $72,000 below our original budget. Thank
you! The combination of continued generosity,
and our internal prudence and resourcefulness,
Toria Watson
Jane Mitchell
enabled us to support educational and
community arts outreach programs as well as provide Moonlight Stage
Productions much needed additional funds to support year-round programming
at Moonlight Amphitheatre.
Theatre arts rely on two sources of income: funds raised from ticket sales
and philanthropic contributions from private donors. With your additional
contribution we help our community thrive, and we do that by presenting the
highest quality live theatre, providing partnership opportunities, and preparing
our youth with artistically innovative education programs. These components are
important economic drivers to our community and region.
The Moonlight Cultural Foundation takes great pride in serving the City of Vista
and Moonlight Stage Productions and Moonlight Presents. We support the
Moonlight Amphitheatre as a community gathering place where people can
come together to celebrate, heal, escape through Broadway caliber productions
and cultural arts programming.
As always, it is your ultimate participation in the arts that makes Moonlight
Stage Productions one of Southern California’s most professional and mature
performing arts institutions and the jewel of San Diego North County.
Gratefully,
Toria Watson

Thoroughly Modern Millie
OCTOBER 14-23, 2016 | MOONLIGHT AMPHITHEATRE
The winner of six TONY Awards including Best Musical, Thoroughly Modern
Millie takes you back to the height of the Jazz Age in New York City, when
“moderns” including a flapper named Millie Dillmount were bobbing their
hair, raising their hemlines, entering the workforce, and rewriting the rules
of love. Taking place in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie
tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in
search of a new life for herself. It’s a New York full of intrigue and jazz - a time when women were
entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behaviour were changing forever. Based
on the popular movie, the stage version of Thoroughly Modern Millie includes a full score of new
songs and bright dance numbers. From explosive tap numbers to a Fred and Ginger routine on
a window ledge, frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences
will love to hate, Thoroughly Modern Millie is a perfect evening of madcap merriment.

This epic tale of love, loyalty, and
betrayal features an unforgettable
pop rock score with soaring ballads
and rousing choral numbers. This
Tony-winning musical is based on the
Verdi opera.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musicalized
version of Billy Wilder’s classic film
noir is theatre at its most dramatic.
This magnificent musical weaves
a tale of faded glory set against a
soaring musical score.
In a magical kingdom beneath the
sea, the beautiful young mermaid
Ariel longs to leave her ocean home
to live in the world above. Based on
the beloved Disney animated film.
From the creator of Broadway’s hit
Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony
Award-winning musical is an exhilarating
journey into one of New York’s most
vibrant communities. With hip-hop,
salsa, merengue and soul music, In the
Heights is filled with incredible dancing
along with a gripping story of hope and
self-discovery.
