MINUTES
Annual Meeting of the Maui Historical Society
August 17, 2013
Message from the President of the Board of Directors
Dear Friends,
CALL TO ORDER
Annual meeting called to order at 5:04 p.m. by Jane Lovell.
I apologize for being unable to attend this important annual meeting. As
outgoing president I would like to take this opportunity to express my
appreciation to the Maui Historical Society `ohana for the tremendous
dedication shown and progress made over this past year, a year that started
out with some difficult times.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE LAST ANNUAL MEETING
Reading of the minutes of September 23, 2012. Jane Lovell entertained a motion to
accept the minutes. Sam Schreiner moved to approve the minutes, Wallette Pellegrino
seconded. Motion carried.
When we found ourselves without an executive director for three full
months, the Board of Directors took over as interim manager, organized
and carried out the annual fundraiser, staffed the office on Saturdays, made
some substantial financial contributions and recruited a new executive
director. Of course, none of this could have been possible without our
small but dedicated staff – Viola Yee, Marianne Klaus, and Kiele Tabbal,
and our assembly of volunteers who kept the museum doors open, the
grounds in top shape, and the programs running.
On February 1st, we were able to welcome our new executive director,
Naomi “Sissy” Lake-Farm who infused the organization with a tremendous
amount of new ideas and energy. Under her leadership, we saw

I understand that many more exciting programs and ideas are in the making
and I am very grateful and pleased to have had the opportunity of being
part of the team that has led the Maui Historical Society this year and
helped instill new life into our beloved organization. Mahalo to each and
every one of you for your love and dedication to keep Maui’s history alive
and well.
Aloha,
Luise Braun

LIABILITIES & EQUITY
Aloha and welcome to our annual general membership meeting! It is an exciting
time to start the new fiscal year with our new executive committee and our new
board members. I look forward to a time of new ideas, creative thinking, and
implementing new workshops, events, and programs. I would like to share my
goals for our Society and how we are working together to achieve success.
Create a Renewed Sense of Presence
To re-establish ourselves as a valuable and viable community resource for both
kama`āina and visitors. We feature Hawaiian music through our Moonlight Mele
and Hoaka concerts. Summer art workshops, ukulele lessons, special exhibits and
our presence at other non-profit events, such as Ola Ka Honua, Ho`omau, and
Sears Friends & Family help expand our presence in the community. With
increased media coverage, public relations, social media, video production,
concierge relationships, the Maui Drive Guide, and reinvigoration of our
newsletter, we hope to grow our visibility in the community and our availability as
a special event venue.
Enhance The Museum Experience
Through grants and fundraising we hope to make the museum experience
enriching, educational, and enjoyable by improving signage, updating displays,
and providing our volunteers and interns the tools and training necessary for
success. We hope to assist the scholarly community by working on updating loan
policies, educational loan kits, accessible archives, research opportunities, and
increased educational programs.

Increase Membership, Volunteers, and Donations
We are only as good as the people who represent us and we need to develop and
strengthen our relationships. Offering increased benefits to our members and
volunteers in the way of discounts, special exhibits, events, concerts, and
workshops will help increase our body of members and volunteers. We have
received restoration donations and capital improvement grants and we are looking
forward to projects that will help us go “green”. We appreciate all manner of
financial contributions, especially key donors willing to provide specific financial
support so that we may continue our important work.

In leading the Society into the future, trust, respect, and aloha are the foundation
of values that I intend to build upon. Please feel comfortable enough to come to
me with any questions or ideas. I have an open-door policy and I am never too
busy to meet with you. We are all `ohana, one family, united in our dedication to

The Masaru
“Pundy” Yokouchi
Lae`ula Award
Lae`ula: Well trained, expert;
enlightened, visionary
Literally, lae`ula means red brow or red forehead and
references one who is always in the sun or looking at the sun,
a visionary who exemplifies characteristics of enlightenment,
intelligence, diligence, consistency, leadership, guidance,
and the capacity to endure and grow through challenges.
The Lae`ula Award is named after Masaru “Pundy”
Yokouchi for his support of our Society and his lifelong
spirit of lae`ula. In 1992, the Yokouchi Family purchased
and gifted the site of the Bailey House Museum to the Maui
Historical Society with the vision of preserving culture and
heritage for future generations. This extraordinary
demonstration of philanthropy is only one example of this
man’s character – but to a small non-profit museum it
represents a watershed milestone beyond compare and
enables the preservation of Maui’s history and will keep it
alive for generations to come. This selfless act was the very
spirit of lae`ula.
Each year, the Board of Directors for the Maui Historical
Society selects from our valued contributors and partners an
individual or an organization that exemplifies this spirit of
lae`ula and through selfless acts of philanthropy supports and
promotes the Maui Historical Society and our efforts to
preserve our culture and heritage for future generations.
GERALDINE KU`ULEI BAL RICHARDSON
The only child of John Ailau Bal and Aldona Grublin, she is a descendant
of the Bailey Family through her paternal grandmother, Mary Bailey
Wilson Bal. She attended Maryknoll High School and is a graduate of
University of California at Berkley. She has one daughter, Caroline
Lokelani Mulumby and one grandson, Richard Kaehuehuokalani Fobbs,
Jr.. She is an entrepreneur with a variety of successful businesses in the
food and retail sales industries.
She has traveled the world, from Hawaii to
Massachusetts, and even as far as France in
the course of her genealogical research for
the Bailey Family. A long-time member of
the Maui Historical Society, her
contributions continue to support the
Society’s mission. The Maui Historical
Society is pleased to award Mrs. Geraldine
Bal Richardson the Lae`ula Award for her
many years of research and major
contributions to the Society.
GEORGE KAHUMOKU, JR.
Uncle George exemplifies all the characteristics of lae`ula – a visionary of
intelligence, leadership, and consistency whose selfless support and
continued contributions are invaluable to the museum.
He is a Grammy Award & Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winning master
slack key guitarist, song writer,
world-traveling performer, teacher,
artist, sculptor, storyteller, writer,
farmer and entrepreneur.
The care and support of the Bailey
House Museum is a kuleana
bequeathed to Uncle George by the
late Uncle Mahina Bailey, which he
has held steadfast to, contributing his
talent, music, time, support, and
aloha for the benefit of the museum..
The Maui Historical Society is proud
to award Uncle George Kahumoku
the Masaru “Pundy Yokouchi
Lae’ula Award.
