On Thursday, May 10th, Delaware’s Economic
Development Secretary Alan Levin and
Delaware Secretary of Agriculture Ed Kee
visited the Mountaire Resource Recovery
Plant in Millsboro, DE. This was the first
time a state representative visited the
plant since its completion in November
2011. The facility cost over $35,000,000 to
construct. It will create 44 new jobs and add
$34,000,000 per year to the local economy.
The two state officials received a tour led
by Vice President of Human Resources and
Business Services, Mike Tirrell, Vice President
PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER
of Live Operations, Bill Massey, Director of
Rendering Operations, Brian Schoeberl, and
Director of Engineering and Environmental
Services, John Wren.
Throughout the tour the group discussed
a variety of topics. Among them were the
finished products of the plant, which are very
high-quality commercial pet food protein
meals, the odor free environment created
by the state-of-the-art thermal oxidizer
technology, and the positive impact the plant
will have not only for Mountaire, but the
entire state of Delaware.

Operated by
180 days of summer
Have you heard of the 180
critical days of summer? If not,
these are the 180 days between
March 11th and September 6th.
They are referred to as critical
days because of the number
of accidents and accidental
deaths that occur during this
time frame. To increase the
likelihood of each of us making
through the summer safely, I
would like to share a few tips
with you.
Don’t drink and drive. (That
means boats, too!) Use seat
belts, as increased traveling in
the summer months makes the
roads more dangerous. Make
sure children are well attended
and within arms’ reach when
swimming. Even adults need
to use the buddy system when
swimming to decrease the risk
of drowning. Many of you have
heard me recommend 10-15
minutes of sunlight without
sunscreen per day to optimize
your Vitamin D levels; this
should be before 10:00 a.m. and
after 2:00 p.m. To protect yourself from
sun exposure for longer than 15 minutes
and between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
you need to apply sunscreen SPF 15 or
higher. Be sure to apply sunscreen to
your entire body since the sun’s rays can
penetrate clothing fibers, and remember
to reapply as recommended.
If you use a gas grill, make sure the
lid is up before you turn on the gas.
If charcoal grilling, make sure to use
charcoal starter instead of gasoline. To
decrease the risk of fire, make sure it is
completely extinguished before leaving
the area. Bicycle helmets are a must, and
as parents we need to set good examples
for our children or grandchildren by
wearing ours. Be mindful of your food
choices at picnics and make sure all
refrigerated foods are well chilled
before eating them. If you spend time
outdoors, especially in a woodsy area,
use insect repellant and check your body
for ticks as soon as you can after leaving
the woods. I leave you with this final
thought: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
Have a safe and fun summer,
Sherry, Melanie and Margie

advised our Corporate Benefits Department that Lincoln Financial Group,
our Third Party Administrator for our retirement plan, had selected
Mountaire Corporation as one of six finalists for the Plan Sponsor of the
Year Award. In an excerpt from Lincoln’s communication to PlanSponsor
Magazine, they commented that “Mountaire goes above and beyond
the day-to-day roles and responsibilities and has a meaningful impact
on the lives of their diverse employee population. They recognize the
important role they play in the financial and physical well-being of their
employees. Mountaire is very passionate about communicating the
importance of company benefits to each and every employee regardless
All of the finalists were honored at an Awards of Excellence dinner held in New York City on March 29. Shelly Cable, Corporate Benefits
Manager, proudly accepted the Plan Sponsor of the Year Finalist plaque at the dinner.
Shelly is shown here with the Corporate Benefits Department holding the award. She commented that “it was an honor for our company
to be nominated for this award”. She knows that being recognized was not just the effort of one person but is that of an entire team and
culture at Mountaire that is committed to our employees overall well-being.

Mountaire Thanksgiving at Easter
feeds over 5,000 Delmarva Residents in Need
On Tuesday, April 3rd Mountaire Farms and members of Sussex County
American Legion Posts once again joined forces to Wage War on Hunger,
Hurt and Hate on Delmarva. The Mountaire Thanksgiving at Easter event is
a continuation of the Mountaire Thanksgiving for Thousands program that
occurs each November. Much like the November event, Thanksgiving at Easter
is designed to provide nutritious meal boxes to area residents in need. With
help from area American Legion Posts, Mountaire Farms packed 1,000 Easter
meal boxes containing a plump Mountaire Roaster and cans of corn, string
beans, pork & beans, yams, cranberry sauce, gravy and stuffing mix. These
boxes were then distributed to twenty eight churches across Sussex County who pre-registered to receive help from the program.
In February of 2012, Mountaire sent letters to more than one hundred and seventy five churches in Sussex County, Delaware
regarding Thanksgiving at Easter and its intent to pack meal boxes for distribution to the local church community; the goal being
to provide each church with a means to support those members in there congregation who need assistance over the holidays.
From that letter, twenty eight churches eagerly responded and they all received enough meal boxes to accommodate those
members who requested help.

Mountaire Pride: Zack Graybeal
Hello, my name is Sam Graybeal and I am a dress haul driver at Lumber Bridge. I would like to share the
success of my son's musical achievements! His name is Zack Graybeal and he's 16 years old. This year he
earned the title of "All-State 1st chair percussion" from the North Carolina Bandmasters Association. The
NCBM (www.ncbandmasters.org) held the state audition on March 10, 2012 with previous 1st chair winners
from public schools in each county and district in the state. This is his 3rd year competing in the honors band
program where he participates in many concert performances throughout various levels of competition.
The All-State honors band performed on Sunday, May 6 at Memorial Hall on the UNC Chapel Hill campus.
He's also an exemplary 10th grade student at Douglas Byrd High and will be next year’s drum captain in the
Douglas Byrd Eagles marching band. His family and I are very proud of his dedication in all the hard work and
countless hours of practicing to perfect his highly awarded skills. Way to go Zack!

Foundations of
Leadership Participant

We are pleased to announce the
promotion of “Foundations of

Gustavo was promoted to the position
of Management Trainee.
Congratulations Gustavo on your
accomplishment!
HACCP Certification North Carolina Complex
A basic Hazard Analysis Critical
Control Points (HACCP) Certification
is required by federal regulations
for any food Company who
develops a HACCP plan or performs
a reassessment of their HACCP
plan. In the past, Mountaire has
relied on outside consultants to
teach and certify our employees.
This training method is often
expensive and inconvenient for
the Company. In October 2011
Mountaire took the initiative to
obtain its own certified instructors
to teach the Basic HACCP Class and
confer certification on employees.
Mountaire partnered with HACCP
Consulting Group to apply already
developed training material that is
recognized and certified by HACCP
Alliance. A training agreement
was reached and approved, and the
Company registered with HACCP
Alliance. Once we received “lead
instructor status” for two (2) of our
Managers (NC & DE), we have been
able to conduct our own Basic HACCP
certification classes and certify our
own employees requiring the training.
The first certification classes were
held in North Carolina on March
24, 2012 and March 31, 2012 with 12
employees from the North Carolina
Complex in attendance. A second
class was held in Selbyville with
8 employees in attendance. Larry
Blalock, NC HACCP Manager, was
the lead instructor for both classes
with James Monroe, Millsboro QA
Manager, assisting in NC and Meghan
Hill, Selbyville HACCP Coordinator,
assisting in Selbyville.

NEW MILLSBORO COMPUTER LEARNING LAB
A STEP FORWARD TOWARDS OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE!
On Friday, April 13 the Millsboro Training
and Development Department held an
open house and ribbon cutting celebration
to officially present to the Millsboro
complex the new 20-Computer Learning
Lab. “This lab has been a dream come
true for our location”, expressed Marissa
Chavez, Training and Development Manager,
not only because it is a very welcoming
and comfortable environment for our
employees, but most importantly because it
provides an environment that is conducive
to learning. In addition to the 20 personal
computers, the lab has an area with tables
and chairs that accommodate the location’s
need for group sessions and meetings.
The new lab will allow higher flexibility and
more availability for employees to complete
their company-required training courses.
Furthermore, it will provide the opportunity
to expand employee learning and
development through other programmed
initiatives that include English as Second
Language and Basic Computer training.
Pat Townsend, Director of Human
Resources and Mark Chranowski,
Director of Processing Operations cut
the ribbon and officially declared the
Computer Lab open to the Millsboro
Complex employees. Guests from
Human Resources in Selbyville, as well as
Millsboro Transportation, Grain, Safety,
and Processing Operations areas joined
the celebration.
Employees can now take individual courses in multiple languages at the same time.

Keeping Birds Cool During Hot Weather
By: William Crowe
When it comes to keeping birds cool during
hot weather in tunnel-ventilated houses; air
speed and air movement is everything. With
the right amount of wind speed a grower
can lower house temperature 10 degrees or
more no matter how humid it is by removing
hot air from the birds. By maintaining fans,
shutters, belts, and keeping light-traps clean;
a producer can maximize the quantity of
air movement in their houses. Study after
study has proven that a combination of
worn fan belts, dirty fans and shutters, and
dusty light-traps can reduce a fan’s capacity
by 20% to 30%.
Probably the most important aspect of fan
maintenance is keeping fans, shutters, and
light-traps free of dirt and dust. Research
shows that if these are allowed to become
caked with dust; air movement can be
reduced as much as 30%. Which means if
wind speed should be 400 fpm; it could
actually be only 280 fpm. Air-inlets, lighttraps, fans, and shutters should be cleaned
once a week to ensure that fans are running
at peak efficiency.
Another important component of
fan preservation that can go largely
unnoticed is pulley alignment. If the
motor pulley and fan hub pulley are
not perfectly aligned it will cause fan
belts to wear unevenly and quickly
(Figure #1). It can also begin to make
the pulleys to become “u-shaped” if
left unattended long enough. This
will increase maintenance costs and
reduce air movement. Use a straightedge to check pulley alignment.
Another thing to try to remember is
not to put a larger pulley on the fan than what the manufacturer recommends. Of course it will
allow the fan to move more air, but will lead to the motor “burning out”.
The relationship between fan speed and
the amount of air moved is linear; meaning
that a 20% reduction in fan speed equals a
20% reduction in the amount of air being
moved. Therefore; replacing worn fan belts
is essential in maintaining good fan speed. It
does not matter if the belt is tight if it is worn
out. It is important to know that fan belts do
not stretch . . . they get thinner. How do you
know if a fan belt needs to be replaced?
As a general rule, the
top of the belt should
extend slightly past the
top of the motor pulley
(Figure #2). If the belt
is 1/16” to 1/8” below
the top of the pulley
it should be replaced
(Figure #3). A good rule
of thumb is to replace
fan belts once a year;
usually in the Spring.
Now these days with electrical costs fast
approaching fuel costs; a grower can be
rewarded with proper fan maintenance.
Unless fans are properly cared for during
the heat of summer; a producer could
easily lose several hundred dollars per
house in a few short weeks. Because air
Page 12
speed keeps birds cool in so many ways; a
small decrease in air movement can have
a large effect on a grower’s ability to keep
birds comfortable. It would not likely
increase mortality during hot weather;
but could have a detrimental effect on
bird performance.
God’s Resources Glorifying Jesus
The Mountaire creed was prayerfully and thoughtfully written to include the declaration, “To be good stewards
of all the assets God has entrusted to us.” Every year some of the company profits are given to local, national and
international faith based ministries. An organization that benefits from this attitude of giving is highlighted below to
allow the Mountaire family to be aware of the impact the company is making on the world in which we live.
Keith Wheeler Ministries - Keith committed his life to
follow Jesus in 1982. Three years later, he began carrying a
12-foot, wooden cross. He has walked with the cross over
20,000 miles, through more than 150 countries on all seven
continents. Keith has carried the cross through nations
at war such as Bosnia, Rwanda, the Chechen region and
Bethlehem during the standoff at the Church of the Nativity.
During this time, he has been arrested many times (none
for crimes) and even jailed. Keith was even taken before a
firing squad to be shot and another time he was beaten and
left for dead. He says “This walk has not been a walk of
faith ... but God’s grace, in spite of my weaknesses, fears,
and inabilities. I don’t have a ministry! Jesus does! I only
want to be the kind of vessel that He can use to reach a
lost and hurting world. It’s His ministry in our lives and
through our lives touching this world. I’m not an evangelist
or missionary -- I’m simply a pilgrim. I only want to follow
Jesus. I love God and I love the people of the world. To
me, ministry is simply the overflow of a life lived in love
with Jesus. I feel that Jesus has many servants but very few
friends. It’s one thing to be called a friend; it’s another to
actually be a friend. I want to be His friend. I believe that
His heart breaks for the lost and hurting of this world. I
know that one day He’ll wipe away every tear from our
eyes, but we have an opportunity to wipe away the tears
from His eyes by loving others and reaching out to them.”
