Dear Craft Fair Friends,
As the year draws to a close
I want to thank our guest
artists who have been with us
all year presenting beautiful
displays and captivating
demonstrations of their work.
Teresa Dair works with knitting, a
craft which has been around for
centuries, but her finished pieces
are definitely 21st century and
fashion forward - they would be

catwalk! Plus Teresa’s clever
a
techniques mean that her knitted garments
are not particularly difficult or time consuming to create –
in fact they’re fast and fun.
Our other guest artist who has been featured across the year
is Liz DeLuca. Her glass beads are exquisite; some are like
delectable iced cup cakes or delicious sweets, others resemble
perfect blossoms with all the tiny detail in place. Jewellery made
with glass beads like this is unique – thank you Liz for showing
us – live at the fairs - the fascinating glass flamework method
that is used to create them.
At the fair you’ll find loads of ideas to get your Christmas gifts
organised – cards to make, decorations to stitch, quick gift
ideas to knit and sew, and lovely jewellery to create.
Have fun!
Be Early – You Could Win!
Each morning of the fair at 9.50am, we hold a little warmup dance with our exhibitors. We invite you to join in – it’s
fun and you could win some great
prize packs from the team
at Blue Willow Cottage, who
design lovely patterns and
kits for all skill levels. They also
stock fantastic products that
make your craft and patchwork
easier and more efficient. Meet
Blue Willow Cottage at Stand C12.

Add your craft tip to the
Tree of Knowledge
at the Craft & Quilt Fair!
Do you have a tip
– or two – about
any craft you’d like
to share?
If so, you can add them
to the Tree of Knowledge
at the Craft & Quilt Fair.
Simply go to the website at
www.craftfair.com.au and
print one of these shapes – a
flower, a leaf or a bird. Then cut
it out and write your tip on it.
After that you just colour it in
and decorate it or embellish it
any way you like, and bring it
along to the Craft & Quilt Fair.
Finally, attach your tip to the
Tree of Knowledge on display
at the Craft & Quilt Fair and
share your idea with thousands
of other visitors.
But that’s not all – if your tip is
judged to be among the top
101 of those received, it could
be published in a book in 2012,
called 101 Tips for Craft!*
*By adding this tip to the Tree of Knowledge at a Craft & Quilt Fair, you warrant
the material is the author’s original work and if reproduced or published by
Expertise Events Pty Ltd, there are no payments or royalties due to the author
at any time.

Festival of Quilts 2011
The Quilters’ Guild of South

more than 200 quilts on show.

Nouveau, plus a Challenge

one metre square.
Judges this year include

Gebhardt. Fine art-machine
embroiderer and textile artist Cheryl Bridgart will also be there to
judge the Art to Wear category.
The exhibition also includes some special displays:
• A showcase of South Australian international award-
winning quilts. Highlights include Royal Amethyst by Rachelle
Denneny which won the ‘World of Beauty Award’ at the 2010
International Quilt Festival in Houston, as well as quilts by Pam
Holland and Tracey Browning.
• Snapshots – the latest exhibition by the regional textile
art trio known as ZigZag – June Brown, Susan Mathews and
Yvonne Voss. This collection explores their common interest in
the Australian natural environment.
• Results of the President’s Challenge – Members of the
guild’s executive committee were challenged by President,
Nola Pearce, to create metre-square quilts based on the work
of Australian music artist, John Farnham. Each member was
randomly given the name of one of John’s songs and asked to
make a quilt inspired by either the song title or lyrics.

Bernina National Quilt Award displayed together.

Material Magic
New AP&Q AQC Challenge
quilts on display
‘Seeing is believing’ when the 30
finalists in the third annual AP&Q AQC
Challenge were revealed this year.
The intriguing theme of the Seven Deadly
Sins was guaranteed to provide participants with ample inspiration
and consequently, the results were eagerly anticipated.
‘Deadly’ or ‘sinful’ are hardly adjectives normally associated with
quilts, but such an evocative theme is what makes the display of
challenge entries all the more compelling.
Original designs by quiltmakers around the theme Seven Deadly
Sins competed for cash prizes totalling $7500, and the 30 finalists’
extraordinary quilts have toured with the Craft & Quilt Fair this year.

Meet your
LOCAL GUILDS
Celebrating 20 years of Bears & Friends
A love of teddy bears and their friends led to the formation of the
‘Bears and Friends’ club two decades ago. Their affection for
all things cuddly, including traditional bears, gollies, cloth dolls,
rabbits and other soft toys has lead them to grow into a well
established community.
The club now includes artists and collectors,
as well as bear lovers of all ages. Come
along to the stand and be inspired by the
members at work, creating a variety of cute,
huggable companions to be treasured.
There will also be a raffle where you could
win a large Charlie Bear and a gollie, plus
other prizes. Proceeds will go to support the
Starlight Foundation and Animals Asia. Kids
can also take part in special lucky dips!

Australian Sewing Guild
Explore the many aspects of a working Sewing Room at this year’s
fair. Guild members will be busy cutting out patterns, fitting and
assembling garments as well as pressing and completing finishing
processes, just as they would at home.
There will also be a display featuring the results of the recent
Neighbourhood Challenge, where each local group received a
30cm strip of floral material in different colours to create a dress
for a three year old. The designs will amaze you!
Handknitters’ Guild of SA
Members of the Handknitters’ Guild of SA Inc
will be sharing their love of all things knitted
and crocheted with their range of creations
inspired by the theme of ‘gift-giving’.
See a colourful array of hats, scarves and
socks on display. As Christmas is an extra
special time for giving, there will also be a
Christmas tree decorated with pretty hand-crafted items such as
knitted bells and stars to get you inspired.
Each morning at the fair members will be giving away gift bags,
containing yarn, needles and a scarf pattern to the first 20 visitors
to the exhibit. They will also be demonstrating many aspects of
knitting and crochet.
STAMPS with style
The Stamp Trap’s Jeanette Trappett believes that once you learn
the principles of scenic stamping, you can create any scene your
imagination allows. “This style of stamping suits both genders,”
she states firmly. “In fact, we are seeing more men using these
stamps lately than ever before.” Her most successful range is by
Stampscapes.
Jeanette’s ‘scenic stamping’ is so popular, she will have daily Make
& Take sessions in The Stamp Trap Studio at the Craft & Quilt Fair.
These run for 1½ hours at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm
daily, and the cost is $20. So, make a date to join a workshop
and book at the Stamp Trap Studio or Stand C17.

See KNITTING with a difference
Knitter extraordinaire
Teresa Dair gives fabrics
some ‘shock-treatment’
– to bring out their
unique style – and she
will be demonstrating her
innovative techniques as
guest artist at the 2011
Craft & Quilt Fair.
The masterpieces Teresa creates are right
at the frontier of fashion. First, she knits
up some wool without needles in what’s
known as ‘arm-knitting’. “You’re using your
arms as the needles – it just makes really
big gaps!” she laughs. To this she adds a
mix of materials such as a tad more wool
plus a bit of acrylic, quite a lot of cotton
and maybe some linen too, and sets about
‘felting’ it.
“Next, I treat it ‘rough’,” she states. “I put it
in really hot water; then I ‘shock’ it with cold
– and then throw it in the washing machine. And, after that I put
it in the dryer, so that what happens then is – it has a major panic
attack! You never get the same effect twice,” she adds, “which is,
of course, what makes it unique.”
Check out arm-knitting for yourself at the Craft & Quilt Fair.

Meet Teresa Dair at the fair
Going off at a tangent pays
artistic dividends for
‘lampworker’ Liz.
See Liz DeLuca’s skill and the beauty of her glasswork – she is a
guest artist at the Craft & Quilt Fair in 2011.
Liz DeLuca is a specialist teacher in the visual arts with a degree
in ceramics who, until eight years ago, spent her working life
teaching youngsters art and craft. Then fate took a hand as, after
a year’s sabbatical, her focus suddenly changed from teaching
art to ‘creating’ it, and from ceramics to glass; and – in particular
– to making handmade glass beads by means of the ancient art
form of ‘lampworking’, which has its origins as far back as the first
century BCE in Syria. It all came from her chance introduction to
‘flamework’, as lampwork is often called today.
“It just went from there,” says Liz, “and all those visual arts skills
instilled in me over 20 or 30 years were just transferred to another
medium. It’s not hard to jump,” she adds. “I was absolutely
gobsmacked at how easy it was to leave that life behind.”
Liz’s new endeavour has taken her to new creative heights
and she revels in the enjoyment she derives from it. “You
can call me a ‘glass-junkie’!” she laughs. “It’s really about
the colour, and the transparency – and the translucency!
It’s all those qualities and properties about glass that
draw you in.” She uses Italian, German and Czech glass,
each renowned for its particular property and special
characteristics, to make her beads.
