SIDM Entrepreneurs
Since graduating in 2004 with a Diploma in Digital Media Design
(Interactive Media), Kiat Lim has been building websites large and
small for almost 10 years. His first project that kick-started his entire
career was his final year project, revamping NYP’s website back in
2003.
“During my time at the Digital Media Design course at NYP, I picked up both
traditional and digital art from industry experts which provided me training
in a wide variety of software from photo editing to 3D animation, and a
flexibility to adapt to any task after graduation.
Not wanting to limit himself, Kiat eventually went on to setup Pixel
Onion, a web design studio focusing on medium to large scale web
revamp projects. The company managed to find its niche by focusing
on a highly flexible content management platform, Drupal, which led
them to work on notable revamps for the likes of SingTel, Singapore
Management University and Earth Observatory of Singapore.
Pixel Onion continues to help organisations construct better user
experience with the use of good design and technology in today’s
highly competitive and ever-changing digital landscape.
I returned to NYP to work as a game artist after graduating in 2001 and was
awarded a scholarship from the Media Development Authority of Singapore
in 2004. I later earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Animation and Visual
Effects from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco in the United
States.
In 2013, I began work on Evacomics on a full-time basis and founded my
own company, Evaworks Pte Ltd, in 2014 to produce customised comics and
illustrations for individuals and companies. My first book “Eva, Kopi and
Matcha” is about cultural differences between Singapore and Japan, and was
published in June 2014. It became a #1 Weekly bestseller in non-fiction at
Books Kinokuniya.”

SIDM Students
• Andrew Chen
• Kinnear Wong
Andrew Chen has always dreamed of becoming an animator and aspires to
one day work at Disney Pixar. To bring him one step closer to his dream, he
applied through the Direct Polytechnic Admission exercise to the Diploma
in Digital Media Design (Animation).
“Hi. I’m Kinnear, a third year student currently doing my Diploma
in Digital Entertainment Technology (Games) at NYP. Being in
NYP has equipped me with the necessary skills to be successful
in the future as a programmer, as well as the opportunity to learn
important values and life lessons!
Andrew then set his sights on the WorldSkills Singapore (WSS) competition
because he wanted to go beyond his comfort zone and learn more about
design. “There are so many aspects of design beyond animation out there,”
said Andrew. While animation was his forte, he had limited knowledge of the
other aspects of design but with guidance from his lecturers and seniors, he
has become more confident of his work. “As an artist, it is good to think more
holistically about design, and not only animation.”
The Graphic Design Technology Skill Area in WSS is especially daunting
due to its longer testing durations. Over three days, participants had to
complete three modules that lasted five to six hours each. They had to
use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to design different media such as
posters, brochures, cards and logos. Having won a Bronze medal in the
competition he is motivated to continue his learning journey and add to
his design repertoire.
10
I was recently given a chance to experience an overseas
attachment in Kajaani, Finland for four and a half months. It
has been extremely valuable to me not just academically, but
also to build my character as a person. Living in Finland has
taught me that it is essential to take a step back, and evaluate the
importance of work-life balance.
I am grateful to the school for giving me the opportunity to
experience such a fulfilling overseas attachment.”
SIDM Alumni
• Ronald Fong
• Nguyen DinhDung
“Digital animation fascinates me and I want to tell compelling stories. I can fulfill this
through computer generated imagery, and studying at SIDM gave me the ability to do
both and more.
“There was never a dull moment at SIDM. There were many
activities where I made wonderful friends, and many good
lecturers who gave me a strong foundation in programming,
preparing me well to take on the world.
The curriculum was well-paced and allowed me to ease into the daunting realm of
digital animation. Throughout my course of study, I have received great inspiration
and support from coursemates and lecturers alike. SIDM strongly encourages friendly
competition, the spirit of sharing, and fostering of great relationships amongst peers
with common interests where my communication skills and confidence greatly
improved whilst working with them.
SIDM’s strong industry ties opened up many opportunities for me. In 2008, I was given
the chance to visit Paris for an animation masterclass at Gobelins l’école de l’image, one
of the top animation schools in the world. SIDM also encouraged us to participate in
numerous competitions where I won several animation awards and landed a golden
opportunity to have an internship at Lucasfilm Animation Singapore.
I’m truly grateful to the lecturers at SIDM for their encouragement and dedication to
inspire. This course has helped me to be ready for the demanding needs of the industry.
I believe NYP SIDM remains the best institution for technical execution in digital
animation.”
My knowledge was further bolstered by exposure to
the industry, through my internship and projects. One
memorable experience was participating in the development
of “Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken” which was the first
made in Singapore game for PS3/PSVita.
With the skills and know-how gained from my time in
SIDM, I joined Vinova Pte Ltd as a Mobile Specialist. I have
managed several projects and developed various high
profile mobile apps for clients such as The Straits Times, The
Business Times, Stomp, and SoShiok. This would never have
been possible without everything I learnt and experienced
at SIDM.”

SIDM Lecturers
Alvin is a former CG Lead from Tecmo Koei Singapore,
and a graduate from the pioneer batch of SIDM’s Digital
Media Design (Games Specialisation). He was trained by
renowned animation lecturers from Sheridan College,
and was also one of the first few Singaporeans to set foot
into the local games industry.
Apart from entertainment games, Alvin also has
vast experience in serious game development.
He contributed to the development of various
technologically advanced 3D simulators that are used
for military simulations by the armed forces and civil
emergency training purposes.
A veteran of games development for consoles ranging
from the PlayStation, Xbox to online PC and mobile
games, Alvin has contributed to over 30 games,
including the highly popular Dynasty Warrior franchise
and many other impressive Tecmo Koei titles such as
The Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Nobunanga’s
Ambition.
“My lecturers have inspired me to excel in my
professional career and now it’s my turn to inspire
you!”
• Alvin Sebastien Hoo - Senior
Lecturer
I started my career as a graphic designer for more
than 10 years back in Hungary. It was like a dream
come true when Industrial Light and Magic (ILM)
(a Lucasfilm division) offered me a job as a Matte
Painter here in Singapore, where I had the privilege
to contribute in the creation of digital environments
for a number of Hollywood blockbusters like Ironman,
Transformers and Rango, over the last five years.
Now as a teacher, I share my knowledge and expertise
of the film industry. It is very gratifying to work closely
alongside my students and ensure that they have a clear
grasp and proper understanding of the various modules I
teach.
