This manual provides guidelines to help ensure consistent applica on of the Northeastern Junior College iden ty. Projec ng a unified visual iden ty involves more than simply crea ng and implemen ng a logo. Graphic standards provide a sound, flexible structure for using logos, color, and typography — a graphic “vocabulary” unique to Northeastern Junior College. By consistently following these graphic standards, Northeastern’s visual iden ty will become established and recognized. Failure to properly use these elements reduces our ability to communicate effec vely and consistently. Please note: The official address of the college is: Northeastern Junior College 100 College Avenue Sterling, CO 80751 it is not 100 College Drive Please make certain you are using the correct college address in your correspondence. Northeastern Junior College Graphic Standards Page 4 The logo The logo is Northeastern’s official iden fying mark. It is the basic element in the applica on of a unified visual iden ty. Northeastern Junior College’s logo consists of three parts: the soldid black N, atop a stylized gold flame and the name of the ins tute ‘NORTHEASTERN’ in the specific Friz Quadrata font. ‘NORTHEASTERN’ always appears larger than the second line of copy sta ng ‘Junior College’. The N-flame mark and college name should never be arranged differently than the examples shown in this manual, or combined with other design elements. The logo is uniquely rendered. It cannot be redrawn, duplicated, or modifying any way. Please note: Northeastern has used a J-Flame logo for many years. We have been iden fied closely with the flame (represents knowledge) and it con nues to be part of our official branding. However, the new varia on of the popular flame logo (below and on subsequent pages) has been completely re-drawn and should be used exclusively. This new logo replaces all older designs and is the only mark to be used when iden fying Northeastern. Junior College Northeastern Junior College Graphic Standards Page 5 Logo configura ons The preferred logo configura on is with the N-Flame at the top of the one-line wordmark. Use the preferred logo arrangement whenever possible. In certain circumstances, it may be be er to use other configura ons. Never use the the Northeastern wordmark without the N-flame Use only the logo configura ons illustrated below. Digital files of all six logo configura ons are available. PREFERRED Junior College Junior College GRAY SHADOW ON THE FLAME A gray shadow may be added to the gold flame. There are however, applica ons where the gray shadow isn’t appropriate (embroidery, for example). If you use the preferred logo with gray shadow, it is preferred that you use it exclusively in the design and do not use mul ple version of the logo in any single print or electronic design. JUNIOR COLLEGE Northeastern Junior College Graphic Standards Page 6 Logo clearspace The logo should always be surrounded by a buffer area of clear space to separate it from text and other graphic elements, as well as the edge of the page. No other elements should infringe upon this space. The minimum clearspace needed is specified rela ve to the height of the flame. The larger the flame, the larger the clearspace. At no me should the clearspace be less than 1/4 inch. Minimum logo size The Northeastern logo has been designed for use in a wide variety of sizes. However, it should never be reproduced so small that it becomes illegible or unno ceable. In print, the minimum logo size is one inch, measured as the of the logo. Never print the logo smaller than this. For on-screen uses, the minimum logo size is 200 pixels, measured as the width of the logo. Never display the logo smaller than this. Northeastern Junior College Graphic Standards Page 7 Logo Varia on for Specific Use In 2014, it was determined by Enrollment Services that marke ng collateral specifically geared toward prospec ve tradi onal age students would u lize a slightly different varia on of the official college logo. The words “Junior College” would be replaced with “Sterling, Colorado”, thus downplaying the college’s status as a two-year, “junior” ins tu on. All other collateral, created to generate local interest, support of the ins tu on, and ownership of ins tu on by students once they are enrolled here, shall bear the official logo with no modifica ons. For tradi onal age enrollment recruitment marke ng only This modified version of the OFFICIAL logo has “Sterling, Colorado” displayed at the bo om of the college name. It represents a deliberate downplay of our “junior college” label. NOTE: ON OCCASION the official logo/emblem may appear as just the flame, N and the word Northeastern or just the emblem of the N and the flame, without any reference to Junior College, Sterling, Colorado or Northeastern. Instances where this might happen include banners, signage, embroidered apparel. If you have ques ons about this use of the logo, please consult with the marke ng office on campus. Northeastern Junior College Graphic Standards Page 8 Logo color configura ons Whenever possible, print the logo in it’s official 2-color format--black and gold or in the 3-color format u lizing the gray shadow. However, when this isn’t possible, it is acceptable to print ANY OF THE APPROVED logos logo in some various color configura ons u lizing the official color scheme (see Page 11). Artwork specifically made for these varia ons is available. The logo SHOULD NEVER APPEAR in any other color or color combina on. The logo should be reproduced so that it is easily seen and recognized. Always place the logo on a solid, contras ng background. Do not place the logo on a busy or mul -colored background. PREFERRED COLOR COMBINATIONS JUNIOR COLLEGE Junior College ACCEPTABLE BLACK AND WHITE OR GRAY SCALE COLOR CONFIGERATIONS ACCEPTABLE COLOR CONFIGURATIONS FOR A SOLID DARK BACKGROUND If you have a desire to use something different than what is shown here, you must seek approval and artwork from the Marke ng Office. Northeastern Junior College Graphic Standards Page 9 Unacceptable logo usage The logo is uniquely rendered. It cannot be redrawn, duplicated, or modified in any way. While computer so ware has made it easy to modify graphics, please resist the tempta on. A consistently applied system of iden fica on creates a dis nc ve visual profile. Any changes made to the logo undermine this goal and can, over me, defeat the en re purpose of our iden ty and graphic standards. These pages illustrate some of the many ways the logo can be impaired by incorrect use. CORRECT: the above logos are used correctly UNACCEPTABLE: the above logos represent clear viola on of graphic standards because they are incorrect colors or color configura ons UNACCEPTABLE: too li le clearspace (see page 6) The “N” is a not the official font. The flame is missplaced. It should only appear behind the N when the logo is used. UNACCEPTABLE: redrawn logo elements UNACCEPTABLE: addi onal graphic elements: drop shadow, outline, etc Northeastern Junior College Graphic Standards Page 10 Signature lockups To ensure that Northeastern’s official logo remains the primary visual iden fier of the ins tu on, a system has been designed to iden fy programs and departments within the school. As illustrated below, the signature lockup allows for two ers of informa on beneath the Northeastern logo. Older logo designs that have been used for the college, its departments, programs, or organiza ons are now considered obsolete and should be removed from circula on. The signature lockup is uniquely rendered. It cannot be redrawn, duplicated, or modified in any way. The three signature colors that comprise Northeastern’s iden ty are Northeastern mustard gold, white and black. A metallic “Vegas” gold has been used in some very specific areas (Hope Scholarship branding, athle cs). Discussion of its use should occur with the marke ng office prior to it being used for purposes other than these two described. Addi onally, the secondary pale e includes on other half-tone (gray) which works well in combina on with any of the three signature colors, this would typically be a screen nt of no more than 15% black on offset prin ng. Northeastern Junior College Graphic Standards Page 12 Recommended typography Typography, used consistently, is one of the most important design elements in establishing a recognizable graphic iden ty. From hundreds of typefaces available, the Adobe Friz Quadra a family is the official font of Northeastern. Specifically, Friz Quadra a SC TT is THE OFFICIAL FONT ON OUR LOGO. It is an all cap font where in even the lower-case le ers are also small capitals. FRIZ QUADRATA SC TT FONT: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Northeastern PLEASE NOTE: the Friz Quadrata font family is not available on every computer on campus. It is available through the document center and the marke ng office, or may be purchased through the computer center. It is not to be used in the body of documents, only u lized as it pertains to modifica ons to and development of the official logo. I. E. You would not use Friz Quadrata to compose the body of a le er being sent out. Garamond and Calibri font families have been selected for use in Northeastern materials. These typefaces are a rac ve, func onal, and versa le enough for use in a wide variety of applica ons. Calibri Font ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ The contents of this booklet are primarily done in Calibri. Calibri is the default font available on all college MS based computers. A replacement for Calibri would be Arial regular or Helve ca. Garamond Font ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Garamond is a very versatile serif font. It is widely accepted in many business and professional circles. It is more stylized than Times New Roman. In cases where you cannot access Garamond, Times New Roman would be a suitable substitute. EXAMPLE: Times New Roman Please note: When producing special print items, it is against the CCCS System’s IT policy to randomly download fonts to state owned computers. Fonts should be APPROVED through the IT department before they are downloaded on state equipment and licenses must be obtained and paid for. The document center needs to have access to these font files as well on any job being done for offical NJC purposes, so appropriate number of licenses should be purchased to allow for installa on in these other areas. There is a wide array of fonts available, already installed on the equipment and users are encouraged to u lize from this selec on. Northeastern Junior College Graphic Standards Page 13 Outdated designs The standards established in this manual cons tute the official iden ty system for the College. Older designs that have been used for the College, its departments, programs, or organiza ons are now considered obsolete and should be removed from circula on. These older designs may only be used when necessary for a “historical” reference. The Northeastern Junior College Alumni Associa on and the Northeastern Junior College Founda on are an excep on to this rule. They will con nue to use their exis ng logos on publica ons for external audiences interested primarily, if not exclusively, in the disciplinary focus of the respec ve centers. Publica ons addressed to internal and local audiences, and other audiences who understand that these en es are centers of excellence programs governed by Northeastern, mul ple logos on a publica on are not permi ed. Only approved colors may be used (see page 13). OUTDATED LOGOS LOGO EXCEPTIONS These 3 logos shown here are for specific groups on campus. It is up to them to modify them and they con nue to be in use un l official change is made. Northeastern Junior College Graphic Standards Page 14 Athle cs logos and fonts Northeastern Font The athle c program uses its own set of logos and 2 customized font families that make up its branding which is separate from the college’s proper iden ty. It is unacceptable for any other Northeastern departments or en es to use the athle cs logos or fonts unless it is a specific circumstance such as residence life programs working to build college spirit, The Bookstore purchasing logo gear etc. The official Northeastern Junior College logo must be used for all nonathle c branding. Plainsmen Font For more informa on about athle c logos, contact the athle c department. LOGOS, FONTS OR OTHER ATHLETIC GRAPHICS MAY NOT BE USED WITHOUT CONSENT OF THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR IN THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT. These fonts and logos were developed by Josh Holloway, an NJC alumnus. Northeastern contractually holds the copyright to this intellectual property. OFFICIAL ATHLETIC MASCOTS AS OF 2015 Northeastern Junior College Graphic Standards Page 15 Northeastern’s Athle c “N” The Northeastern Athle c “N” may appear in a variety of color combina ons and styles as shown here. It is considered the primary graphic for NJC Athle cs, even more so than the mascot renderings. This N is not to be used for branding outside of the Northeastern Junior College athle c department. In the case of placing logos on clothing and uniforms, it is permissable, and encouraged, for athle cs to incorporate the Northeastern “flame” into their iden ty. SPORT SPECIFIC BRANDING Past logos used for promo on of Northeastern athle cs such as these shown here are no longer to be used. Northeastern Junior College Graphic Standards Page 16 Varia ons away from official branding Over the years there has been varia on from official branding on this campus. Occasionally there is reason for this to happen. However, dilu ng the overall branding effort of the college with these varia ons must be given careful considera on. Effec ve February 1, 2016, all efforts to give specific iden fy to these individual programs MUST BE CLEARED THROUGH THE MARKETING OFFICE. When a varia on is warranted, artwork will be professionally created for this purpose. Be careful not to inadvertently create a diluted iden ty for your program by doing random graphics on such items as t-shirts, posters, and social media posts. When in doubt, ask the marke ng office for guidance. Below are some examples of logos, and or graphics currently in use or used in the past, some of them are very clearly in viola on of current graphic standards and having never received official approval. Some of these are being used for social media (Facebook etc.). ALL EMPLOYEES ARE ENCOURAGED TO REFER TO THESE GRAPHIC STANDARDS AS A GUIDELINE WHEN DOING COLLEGE RELATED SOCIAL MEDIA. N JC Livestock Judging Team Restoring The Tradition Northeastern Junior College Graphic Standards Page 17 Visual review policy Regardless of where it is to be printed, ALL publica ons and print materials going out for public consump on (more than 100 to be printed) must be submi ed to the Documen Center and/or Marke ng Services Office (Walker Hall). When prin ng more than 50 copies of anything, it is most cost efficient to u lize the Document Center on campus. Materials which must adhere to this policy include: • Any printed material that promotes specific programs, departments, ac vi es, or special events at Northeastern Junior College. Note: While responsibility for origina ng and funding these materials rests with the academic unit, Marke ng Services must approve these publica ons before they are printed. • forms, invoices, and order blanks — especially those which will be sent off campus in the conduct of college business • surveys, polls, ques onnaires, or any material distributed with the express purpose of gathering informa on about percep ons of Northeastern • any form of adver sing, regardless of circumstance • merchandise to be sold or given away, such as coffee mugs, pens, etc. • video and broadcast media such as videotapes, CDs, broadcast adver sing, and other mul -media projects Excep ons to this policy include: • course syllabi • class handouts • internal (on-campus) communica ons • non-official communica ons To ask ques ons or submit a project for approval, contact: Director Northeastern Junior College Marke ng Services Office 970-521-6611 Templates Northeastern has pre-printed le erhead which can be customized for your specific department. Northeastern has a template for brochure development which assures all brochures printed follow graphic standards. Assistance with all print projects (brochures, posters, postcards, business cards and etc.) to make sure they follow the college’s graphic standards is available through the Document Center or the Marke ng Office. Northeastern Junior College Graphic Standards Page 18 Obtaining electronic files We want to make it easy to follow the graphic standards outlined in this manual. Artwork for the Northeastern logo can be obtained through the Marke ng Services Office, or may be found at the following loca on on your computer: P Drive NJC Graphics (Folder) You should only u lize these graphics provided here. If you have some very specific need that these graphics will not meet, you should contact the Marke ng Services Office to obtain the graphics you need. Campus prin ng policy For the greatest cost efficiency campus wide, all campus prin ng and photocopying, involving more than 100 copies, should be channeled through the Campus Document Center. If a print job is complicated or specialized, it should always go through the Campus Document Center for the “Right of First Refusal.” If the job cannot be completed by the college’s Document Center due to complexity (requires offset prin ng, etc.) or in the me frame needed, it will be the responsibility of the Marke ng Services Office to contract with an outside vendor to complete the job. If an individual faculty or staff member besides the Marke ng Services or Document Center staff contracts with an outside vendor, that individual may be liable for the bill. The Marke ng Services Office, the NJC Bookstore, NJC Athle cs, HR Office and the Enrollment Services (Admission Office) are the only areas on campus authorized to arrange for prin ng services to be done by off campus vendors. Copyright guidelines Marke ng Services and the campus Document Center follow copyright guidelines that govern the making of photocopies of copyrighted material. Because the college and any personnel making photocopies are liable for any infringement, these areas reserve the right to refuse to accept a copying order that, in their judgment, would violate copyright law. A copy of wri en permission must be included with each request for reproduc on of copyrighted material at the me the job is brought to the copy center. Northeastern Junior College Graphic Standards Page 20 Graphic standard for business cards, le erhead and envelopes Business cards are printed through the Human Resources office on campus. A specific design layout has been adopted for all business cards and an offset printer is contracted to make a supply of “shells” for the college. Employee name/ tle/contact informa on is then provided to this printer in “batches” of several employees at a me to take advantage of cost efficiencies. If you need assistance with business cards, contact the Human Resources office in Walker Hall. Envelopes and le erhead are printed by the Document Center on campus. Like the business card prin ng, the college arranges for a large supply of le erhead “shells” and then those desiring a customized envelope or le erhead may request them through the Document Center. There is a specific template that iden fies what informa on in included on these print items, where it is placed on the shell and what font in what size is to be used.
