Once you log into your account with WiredTree, you will be taken to the Main Page with News and Announcements from WiredTree. "Overall Server Status" will display an X if any of your servers are over their bandwidth threshold or are having service issues. "Quick Info" contains your username, the number of current servers that you have with WiredTree, the number of open support tickets, your account balance, and the last time when your account was logged into, including the IP address that was used. The Main Page also has a couple new sections that contain your unpaid invoices and your recent account activity. Each section contains various tools that allow you to view and interact with your server(s) and with WiredTree staff. Below is a short overview of the customer portal features and offerings with links to the major details of each section. If you have any questions at anytime, please feel free to contact [email protected] for assistance. WiredTree 53 W. Jackson Blvd Suite 1734 Chicago, IL 60607 T: +1-312-447-0510 [email protected] www.wiredtree.com Network/DNS Overview The network/DNS section allows you to manage your DNS, Reverse DNS, Request IP Addresses, and setup SPF records and MX Protect for each one of your servers. Under the Manage DNS subsection you can Add DNS Zone files to the WiredTree nameservers through an easy web interface. You can also manage the Reverse DNS and PTR entries for your server(s). Manage Your DNS The DNS sub-sections lets you Add, View and Edit any domain names to the WiredTree nameserver (ns1.wiredtree.com and ns2.wiredtree.com). If you wish to use our nameservers simply change your domain name's nameservers at the registrar to point to ns1.wiredtree.com and ns2.wiredtree.com. Before we dive into adding and editing zone files we are going briefly cover the following elements of a zone file. • Host Records (A Records) • CNAMES • MX Records • PTR Records • Txt Records WiredTree 53 W. Jackson Blvd Suite 1734 Chicago, IL 60607 T: +1-312-447-0510 [email protected] www.wiredtree.com Host Records (A records) This also known as an Address Record that maps an domain name to a IP Address. Example Host Record: wiredtree.com. IN A 10.10.10.8 CNAME Is short for Canonical Name Record which creates an alias that points to another domain name. CNAMEs can only be pointed at Host Records (A records), not an IP Address. Example CNAME: www IN CNAME wiredtree.com MX Record This stands for Mail Exchange Record. It points to a list of mail servers for that domain name. MX records can not contain IP addresses and have to be pointed at Cname or A Record. MX records also have a priority level that can be set in the zone file. You can see what a normal MX Record looks like in the following example. Example MX Record: wiredtree.com. IN MX 0 email.wiredtree.com. The 0 represents the priority. The lower the number the higher the priority. So if you had a backup email server that was to accept email if your primary email server was down your MX record would look like this. Example MX Record with secondary MX: wiredtree.com. IN MX 10 email.wiredtree.com. wiredtree.com. IN MX 20 backup-email.wiredtree.com. In this setup if email.wiredtree.com was down all mail would goto backup-email.wiredtree.com. PTR Record Also known as a Pointer Record or a Reverse DNS Record maps an IP Address to a hostname. The last octet is used when creating this entry. Txt Record Is generally used for adding Sender Policy Framework (SPF) information to a zone file. A typical SPF record would look like the following if your server both sends and receives email for the domain you are adding the SPF record to. There are two entries needed. One for the domain MX record and one for the mail A entry. Example Txt Record: ; Domain SPF wiredtree.com. TXT "v=spf1 mx -all" ; Mail SPF mail TXT "v=spf1 a -all" WiredTree 53 W. Jackson Blvd Suite 1734 Chicago, IL 60607 T: +1-312-447-0510 [email protected] www.wiredtree.com Add a DNS Zone Adding new zone files is done by clicking the "Add a Zone" link. You will then be prompted to enter in the domain name for the zone file. Please note that this is without any subdomain added on such as www. This will be added on automatically as a CNAME to your zone file once it has been created. Click the Add Zone button once you have filled in the domain you wish to park onto the WiredTree nameservers. This will pull up a prompt to edit the zone file if you wish to make any changes to your freshly created DNS zone. Reverse DNS Click the "Reverse DNS" link to edit the Reverse DNS (PTR) Entries for your IP Addresses that are assigned to your account. This will load a list of servers that you have on your account. Click on the "View IPs" link to view the IP Addresses that are currently assigned to that server. Once the page loads you will need to enter in the hostname for each IP Address that you want to add a reverse to. Click the Save Reverse IPs button to save your changes. WiredTree 53 W. Jackson Blvd Suite 1734 Chicago, IL 60607 T: +1-312-447-0510 [email protected] www.wiredtree.com Edit a DNS Zone Editing a zone file is done by selecting the zone file that you want to edit from the drop down and clicking the edit zone button. This will open the zone file in a web based editor. You can then add, edit and remove various elements from the zone file. Once this has been done you can click on save button to save and reload the zone on both ns1.wiredtree.com and ns2.wiredtree.com. You will then see various sections of the DNS zone that you may edit. These sections are covered in the Manage Your DNS section of this guide. WiredTree 53 W. We process each IP Request as soon as possible and also in the order in which they are received.
