RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT: We’ve got MORE Music!
At the May 10 meeting of the Fayette County Neighborhood
Council, past president Emma Tibbs conducted a survey of
those is attendance on various issues concerning neighborhoods.
(The Council is an alliance of some 100 neighborhood associations in the county.)
In our last issue we included the first of a two-part article profiling some folks who prove that Lansdowne’s definitely got musical talent. In this issue we conclude our profile on Lansdowne
musicians.
One question related to future expansion of the Urban Service
Area to accommodate new development. 81% of those in attendance were against future expansion. 73% were aware that the
LFUCG Council had recently passed new Infill/Redevelopment
regulations that made changes in our present Zoning Ordinance
and that some of these could have a future impact on the
neighborhoods.
If the non expansion prevails, the Lansdowne area can expect
continued and increasing pressure for changes that would increase densities and redevelopment. The relatively close proximity to the University, New Circle Road and downtown will
make it a perfect target.
The Neighborhood Association has begun looking at these issues to consider actions that can be taken at this time to reduce
impacts in the future. The need for full participation in these
decisions is one of the reasons for the intensive membership
drive that is being conducted by the Association. A united and
strong neighborhood will have a voice in what will be undertaken.
On another matter, the Board has requested funding for the enhancement of the Zandale Park on Zandale Drive. This dedicated public space has been under-utilized for many years even
though the government has been providing the mowing. The
precise improvements will be decided after a discussion at the
semi-annual meeting.
With the infusion of the next generation of those moving to
Lansdowne, many of whom grew up in the neighborhood, the
area has a bright future, if we remain alert.
Today, Teresa Garbulinska is a patron of the arts. But when
she and her husband arrived in Lexington in 1974, she was a
concert pianist with critically acclaimed performances in both
Eastern and Western Europe as well as in the United States.
Born in Poland, Teresa graduated from the Conservatoire of
Cracow in 1959 with high honors. There she was a student of
Professor Henryk Sztompka, a piano virtuoso who was himself a
student of Ignace Paderewski, arguably the most famous pianist
of his time. It is a connection which brought her the title,
―granddaughter of Padereski,‖ early in her career.
Teresa Garbulinska received early recognition as a performer.
In 1956 she won first prize at the Polish National Mozart
Competition in Katowice, Poland. Subsequently, she performed in many international music competitions and festivals,
including an appearance at the Berkshire Music Festival in
Tanglewood, MA, in 1964. Following one of her U.S. performances H. Klein of the New York Times observed, ―…It is often
said of a female pianist that ‗she plays like a man.‘ Well, Miss
Garbulinska plays like a woman—delicately, softly, yielding,
sweetly and dreamily. Miss Garbulinska gave us Chopin the
poet….‖ And a critic for the Los Angeles Times added, ―…Miss
Garbulinska made a good case for her Chopin…preludes from
Op. 28 served as models for Chopinesque lyricism.‖
Teresa‘s career was both demanding and rewarding. To meet
the exacting standards for technical performance imposed by the
critics, her audiences, and by Teresa herself she required at least
five to six hours of practice each day. However, some of that
practice took place in Poland‘s Lancut Castle, which was converted after World War II into a museum with exhibits on the
ground floor and a private residence above. Teresa was invited
by the Ministry of Art to live in the private residence and use

of the Houston Symphony, where he is also music librarian.
Nick Lawrence who currently lives in Lansdowne also plays
bass. However, Nick is more likely to be heard performing
American roots music and bluegrass than classical compositions. He also hosts ―Curtains at 8,‖ a local arts program broadcast on weeknights on WUKY 91.3 FM.

the three magnificent pianos in the castle for her practice. Visitors who happened on Teresa during practice or observed her
travelling to and from the railroad station in one of the Castle‘s
vintage horse drawn carriages dubbed her ―Princess Teresa.‖
On coming to Lexington, Teresa retired from her career as a
concert performer but for many years she held a private studio
where she shared her talents with students who were willing to
make a serious commitment to their musical study. In recognition of her career as a concert pianist and as a supporter of the
arts, UK HealthCare recently inaugurated the Teresa Garbulinska Annual Premier Concert Series as part of the Lucille
Caudill Little Performing Arts in Healthcare Program.
Place an Ad in the LNA Directory
The Lansdowne Neighborhood Association will be printing its
2010 Membership Directory next month. The Directory is used
frequently by members throughout the year to obtain phone
numbers, addresses, e-mail addresses, and to learn the names of
their neighbors. So many eyes are on these pages day after day.
Although Teresa‘s favorite composers include Bach, Mozart,
Debussy and Samuel Barber, she has a special affinity for
Chopin. In celebration of the 200th anniversary of Chopin‘s
birth in early March, she was a featured guest of Roger Duvall
in a special tribute to Chopin on WEKU-88.9 FM. In addition
to her comments on Chopin‘s work and his importance as a
composer, Duvall also featured excerpts from her recording,
―Chopin Encores.‖ The complete interview with photos of
Teresa (and Lancut Castle) and excerpts from her recorded performances appear on http://www.weku.fm/chopin.html.
We invite you to consider an ad in the upcoming LNA Membership Directory for your business – an ad that many will see often
over the course of a year. Furthermore, the folks who will be
seeing your ad are your neighbors who live just a short distance
from your place of business. You just may offer a service our
Lansdowne residents need! Following is information for placing an ad:

At the other end of the musical spectrum is Lansdowne resident
Bob Stange, whose current band is called ―NightCrawler.‖
Born in Michigan, Bob has been active in the Lexington music
scene for about 15 years but he says that music has always been
part of his life through school, church, radio and TV. ―I was an
early fan of Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson and, of course, the
Beatles.‖ Bob learned music in junior and senior high school
band, playing clarinet and sax. ―I have long since and stupidly
given up both.‖ He also had some formal guitar lessons but
learned primarily by ear.
Lansdowne Neighborhood Association welcomes your contribution to the Directory. If you have further questions about placing an ad, please contact Sonny Wray at [email protected],
280-1245 or 278-1518.
―I've been playing the guitar and have been in groups for close
to 45 years. I've played rock, blues, rhythm and blues, country
and folk. I have written a few songs over the years. I was with
a band in Michigan called Odyssey. We opened shows for Rare
Earth, Tommy James and Alice Cooper. We traveled around the
Midwest for a time and went as far as Key West. I also played
guitar in my college jazz band. That was a real challenge.‖
Green Tips for Early Summer
If you hate storing plastic pots in your garage because you‘re
reluctant to send them to the landfill, check with your local garden center to see if they collect plastic pots for recycling.
Also, if you end up with extra produce in your vegetable garden
this year, consider donating your extra fruits and veggies to the
Lexington Urban Gleaning Network. Watch our next newsletter
issue for information about providing food for the hungry from
your garden harvest.
Today Bob plays guitar (both electric and acoustic) and electric
bass and sings as a solo act with his band and with his church
choir. He plays an occasional solo gig at Azur restaurant, and
he says readers can keep up with his band at
www.myspace.com/nightcrawlertunes. ―I like to perform and I
love it when a song comes together and connects with the
crowd. I also like the fact that with music, you can get better
even as you get older. Learning an instrument can be a lifetime
pursuit.‖ Regarding this series, he observed, ―I look forward to
reading about the other musicians in Lansdowne.‖

In addition to current residents featured in this and previous articles, two former and current Lansdowne residents have made
music a vocation and an avocation. Michael McMurray, who

KUDOS to Our Neighbors!
Here’s Your Chance to ...
IMPROVE OUR NEIGHBORHOOD!
Earlier this year Dan Potter won the 2010 United States Gold
Association Green Award. Dan, a professor of entomology at
UK, was recognized for his research and leadership for environmentally responsible pest management, including golf courses
(and the boxwoods in the medians on Lansdowne Drive ).
We need volunteers to WORK on our standing committees. We
need people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and do a few
hours of work once in awhile. If you have ideas for projects,
we want to hear from you, too!
Every five years the University of Kentucky Alumni Association recognizes a select group of outstanding alumni and honors
them by inducting them into the Hall of Distinguished Alumni.
Among the 20 inductees for 2010 was our own LNA Treasurer,
Wimberly Royster. Before retiring from UK, Wimberly served
in numerous capacities, including as the first vice president for
Research and Graduate Studies, dean of the Graduate School,
dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and as special assistant
to the President of the University. He also served as director of
the UK Advance Science and Technology Commercialization
Center and was a professor of mathematics. In addition, he was
vice president of the UK Research Foundation from 19731990. During his tenure as the university‘s administrative officer responsible for research and graduate education, external
support for research increased six-fold, including the largest
single award in UK‘s history. In 1992, Wimberly joined the
Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation as statewide
director of the Kentucky Experimental Program to Stimulate
Research (EPSCoR) Program. There he helped bring in $40
million dollars in National Science Foundation grants to promote mathematics and science education in rural Appalachia.
There have been only 283 people honored since the Hall was
established in 1965 to help celebrate the University of Kentucky's Centennial Year.
If you‘re willing, here are the volunteer possibilities and the
people to contact:

On April 29, the Lexington Chapter of the National Association
of Women Business Owners presented Natalie Wilson its highest honor, the 2010 Winners‘ Circle Award. Many of our
neighbors know that Natalie is a partner in the law firm of Gess,
Mattingly & Atchison, where she heads the family law section.
However, most people don‘t know that Natalie served as the
LNA attorney, incorporating The Lansdowne Neighborhood
Association in 1995. As a high school student in Maine, Natalie
worked for Senator Margaret Chase
Smith and upon graduation from college
she worked in the Eisenhower White
House as, in her own words, a ―general
flunky.‖ Upon graduation from UK Law
School in 1968, she was one of the few
women attorneys practicing law in Kentucky. During her professional career she
co-authored with former Justice James E.
Keller a book on family law and served as
a bar examiner for the Kentucky Bar Association. She has also spent many hours
as a community volunteer, serving as past
chair of the United Way board, a Girl
Scout leader and board member of the
Girl Scout Wilderness Road Council and
for several years as member of the LexingtonFayette County Airport Board. In April she and husband,
George, celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary!
Archives Committee Continues to Make History!
Three new interviews have been added to our
online Oral History. Our interview subjects
share Lexington history as well as the history of
our neighborhood and our association. Folks
whose histories and photos been added since
the first of the year include: Martha King,
Thelma Henderson and F.D. Kindred. Two
more will be coming soon: Foster Ockerman
and Calvin Grayson. That will bring to 17 the
total number of interviews in our collection.
Thanks to Patti Thornbury and Pat Esrael
for conducting the interviews, to Bev Futrell
for providing technical support and to
Steve Albert for putting the interviews
on our website. To access the information, go to http://
lansdownenet.tripod.com. Select the
―History‖ section; then, the tab labeled
―Oral History.‖
