Come on the Loo
What a magnificent start to the season. Firwood Waterloo Football
Club have played 9, won 8, lost 1. They are joint top of the league
with Sale FC, but have scored more points and have a better points
difference than Sale. Their run continued on Saturday when they
comfortably outplayed Westoe, winning 66—5.
Marcon
Under the guiding influence of Jan Louis van Deventer, Director of
Rugby and Steve Woods, assistant coach the season opened in
September against Cleckheaton RFC. This was a resounding win
for Firwood Waterloo, winning 33 to19. It was followed by further
games against Huddersfield YMCA and Morley, which were both
victories. On Saturday, 27th September, Firwood Waterloo travelled
to Lymm RFC, only to have their winning success thwarted as they
were beaten by 32 to 28. From this defeat, the team was focused on
the positive aspects of the game in preparation for the following
match against Burnage RFC. This positive attitude saw Firwood
Waterloo secure a resounding win by 88 to 12.
The success of the team has continued, with further wins over
Sheffield Tigers away (13/21), Billingham RFC at home (41/6),
Beverley RFC away (29/50) and the recent win at home against
Westoe RFC (66/5).
Jan commented “This is certainly the best start to any season at
Waterloo that I can remember. Rugby is about a group of players
who are keen, dedicated, want to play for each other and are always
looking to give of their best and that is what we have at Waterloo”
In the next few weeks, Waterloo face their two nearest rivals. Sandal
RFC on Saturday, 15th November and Sale RFC on Saturday, 29th
September.

of supporters encouraging our Senior Rugby team on. So if you

Super athlete Mark Goulder, from Southport & Formby Special
Athletes, has returned from the 2014 Special Olympics European
Summer Games with Gold and Silver medals. Mark represented
Great Britain in badminton and spent two weeks training and
competing in Antwerp, Belgium. Mark competed in the category for
athletes with Intellectual Disabilities.
Special Olympics are the country’s largest provider of year-round
sports training and competition programmes for children and adults
with intellectual (learning) disabilities. They are also the founders of
Special Olympics sports clubs with local, regional and national
competitions.
Mark took up badminton after watching his mother play and is now a
member at both Southport & Formby Special Athletes and
Churchtown Badminton Club. His mum Marilyn said “ I am so proud
of Mark. He was away for two weeks, which is quite a long time and
he did so well. Mark is a great badminton player and for him to have
been accepted into these games he must have impressed the
organisers”.
Chris Ratcliffe, chair of Southport & Formby Special Athletes said,
“ We are all so proud of Mark and so pleased he has done so well at
the Summer Games. He is the first of our athletes who has
competed, so it was very special”.
Well done Mark!!!!
Southport Old Links’ youngsters win
Liverpool Colts golf competition
The long running Liverpool Colts golf competition took place at
Bromborough Golf club and included a total of 18 teams, from four
leagues and for the first time women were allowed to take part.
Southport Old Links, Lee Park, Prenton and Royal Liverpool
progressed to the semi final stage. In the morning semi finals,
Southport Old Links beat Lee Park, with 17 year old England junior
international Eloise Healey winning the top singles match. In the
other semi final Prenton beat Royal Liverpool in a very close contest,
to continue their strong run of form in the competition.
In the afternoon final Southport Old Links middle order came through
to win the day with a final score of 3-2. This is the first time the Old
Links has won the competition and ends a run of five semi final
appearances since 2001.
Hillside Lawn Tennis get funding
Hillside LTC has been successful in applying to Sport England for a
grant for a 5th court at their club on Liverpool Road, Southport. They
have been awarded the full grant of £58,963 for which they applied
which is great news.
Rob Hemmings said: “I just wanted, on behalf of the committee and
members of Hillside LTC, to thank Sefton Sports Council for their
great letter supporting our grant application which certainly helped
with its success. The 5th court will be a huge improvement to our
club and we are all absolutely delighted that it is now going ahead”
Formby C U15’s win Echo Cup
Formby had a fabulous 43 run win over Wavertree in the Merseyside
Youth Cricket League U15 Echo Cup Final. Formby won the toss
and elected to bat. Ben Aitchison was the pick of the batsmen with a
superb 99 that helped his team to 201-8 at the close of their innings.
Wavertree fought back well after tea but could not handle Formby’s
bowlers who eventually had them finish their innings on 158-9. This
gave Formby a well deserved 43 run win.
Aitchison was named Man of the Match for his 99 runs, two catches
and a run out.

Formby CC have a very good Year
Formby Cricket Club had a very good year both on and off the field.
During a very successful season on the pitch the club vied for top
spot in the league. It all came down to the final weekend when 5
teams were in the hunt for the title. Formby, Highfield, Wigan,
Colwyn Bay and Rainford all came to the last game with a chance of
winning the title.
A thrilling day of cricket saw Highfield draw with fellow promotion
hopefuls Colwyn Bay and Rainford losing at Sefton Park. This left it
between Formby and Wigan, who met at Cricket Path. Australian
import Dale McKay hit an unbeaten 129 that allowed Formby to
declare on 235-8. The bowlers then took over with Matthew Dearden
(6-32) and Graham Bolton (3-42) skittling out Wigan fro 132.
Formby’s fans celebrated in style at the clubhouse and will be joined
by Highfield in the top tier, as they were runners up.
Off the field the club pulled of a coup with two signings for next
season, signing two top class spinners for next year. Garry Keedy
and Steven Parry will be playing for the club.
Gary Keedy played cricket for Lancashire for many
years before joining Nottinghamshire. He is
probably one of the finest spinners never to play for
England
Southport Rugby Club
Stephen Parry, who is currently playing for
Lancashire, made his debut for England in a
One Day International against West Indies in
March 2014, followed by playing in the
Twenty20 against the same team later in the
month.
Keedy has agreed to play at Formby for the next three seasons
whenever his commitments at Nottinghamshire permit; Parry’s
appearances will be limited by the frequency with which he is
selected by Lancashire in 2015. In practice, it is expected that Keedy
will play 90% of Formby’s games while Parry will be available for half
the club’s matches. It will be interesting to see how opponents cope
with the pair when they are operating together.
Exciting times for Formby CC we hope.

other sports to hire for community projects such as football groups,
rugby etc, once the floodlights are installed in mid December.
The Northern Club would also like Sefton Sports Council

Charity No. 1037697
Southport & Formby Special Athletes provides sports activities for people with intellectual (learning)
disabilities aged 12 and upwards of any ability level. The group was originally formed in 1983 as a Special
Olympics Group.
The WASP in the logo stands for We Are Special People.
Our sports’ training includes football, boccia, badminton, table tennis, kwik-cricket, rounders, kurling and
basketball. Our activities can contribute to their physical and social development and through successful
experience in sport they gain confidence and build a positive self-image. We try to make sure everyone has
fun as well as improving their skills.
In 2013 11 of our athletes competed at the National Special Olympics Summer Games winning a total of
3 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medals. In September Mark Goulder from our Group won a gold and silver
medal in badminton at the European Special Olympics.
In October 15 athletes travelled to Pontefract for a kurling competition and our footballers played at an
event in Crewe.
Special Olympics and Paralympics are two separate organisations recognised by the International
Olympic Committee. Special Olympics is unique in providing sports opportunities for individuals with
intellectual disability at all levels. Paralympics provides sports opportunities for elite athletes with a physical
disability.
