KCH CAMPUS NEWSLETTER
DECEMBER 2013
FROM THE CEO
Dear Friends and Families,
The KCH Auxiliary Holiday Bazaar in early November was certainly a success. There were quality items to buy and good food to
try. Thank you to Joan McCorkle, Auxiliary Fundraising Chairman,
and all the auxiliary members who worked so hard to make it possible. It’s the mission of the auxiliary to help our residents in ways
that will provide a better life for them and we are so grateful for
their work.
The campus coffee in November was canceled so we could
celebrate Thanksgiving together instead. We enjoyed our annual
catered meal on Nov. 8 with tables looking very festive. The food
was all delicious and KCH staff members helped with all the serving.
Our military veterans were honored this year with a special
program in the living room on Veterans Day. There are currently
15 health care residents and many campus residents at KCH who
served in the military. There was special recognition of each military branch so that the veterans could stand or hold up their
hands to be recognized. The program ended with the playing of
Taps by Jason Ault, Director of Development.
We want to announce that our Campus Services Director, Connie Griswold, LPN, recently retired and Kala Shaw, LPN, was hired
and has started working in that position. There will be a special
farewell time for Connie at the Campus Coffee on Friday, Dec. 6 at
10 a.m.
The KCH Board Meeting takes place on Friday Dec. 13 at 12:30.
It is open for anyone to attend.
We look forward now to the many holiday festivities and wish
each of you a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS.
Thanks,
Jim

DEVELOPMENT NEWS
Greetings!
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the Phonathon mailer. Donations continue to roll in at a steady pace. We have already received over
$17,000, which is very, very good. This money directly impacts the care we
provide here at KCH, including Tilsley Manor, the new bus, kitchen renovations, and much more. If you have not yet had the chance to contribute but
would like to do so, feel free to contact the Development Office.
“He who has
not Christmas
in his heart will
never find it
under a tree.”
~Roy L. Smith
Speaking of giving, in case you haven’t noticed, we are almost in the biggest giving season of all: CHRISTMAS! So, who is up for a little history here? Do
you know what the first gifts given to Jesus were? You probably do know the
answer, which is gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Here is the more tricky answer. Do you know the foreshadowing significance of those gifts? Here you
go:
Frankincense was a perfume used in Jewish worship and, as a gift, it
showed that people would worship Jesus.
Gold was associated with kings and Christians believe that Jesus is the
King of Kings.
Myrrh was a perfume that was put on dead bodies to make them smell
nice and, as a gift, it showed that Jesus would suffer and die.
We also remember God’s gift to mankind. In one of the more recognizable
Bible verses, John 3:16 tells us that “God loved the world so much, that he
gave his one and only Son, so that whoever believes in him may not be lost
but have eternal life.' While the hustle and bustle of the holiday season can
distract us, let’s try to remember the real reason for the season as we celebrate with our loved ones.
Have a Merry Christmas! God Bless,
Jason Ault

LIFESTYLES: SALES & MARKETING
The Holidays have arrived and with them we hear the words ‘joy, hope, peace
and love.’ This time of year is associated with a lot of warm thoughts and cherished celebrations. However, some people can see this time of year as a season
of sadness. This is especially true for those who have recently lost a loved one or
are dealing with personal health or financial issues. Many of us look to ways to
try to beat the holiday blues, or help someone we love.
The following is an excerpt from an article by Health Net:
Beating the holiday blues
With a goal of beating the holiday blues, Ian Shaffer, M.D., suggests that seniors
follow these recommendations from the American Geriatrics Society:
Accept invitations – Avoid isolation by attending holiday parties and other
events you’ve been invited to, even if you need to ask someone for a ride. If
your social calendar has many open days, host a small gathering of your own.
Help others – Volunteering can be a fulfilling, uplifting experience that can
benefit everyone involved. To find out about local opportunities, contact area
schools, churches and charitable organizations.
Curb cocktails – While a holiday toast here and there is fine, alcohol is a depressant and should be consumed minimally.
Spend wisely – Many seniors live on fixed incomes and simply can’t afford to
buy bountiful gifts. Those who truly care about you don’t expect extravagant
presents, so set a budget and stick to it.
Speak up – If the holidays have you feeling far from gleeful, don’t keep these
emotions locked inside. By sharing your state of mind with family and friends,
you may likely glean insights, including the fact that you’re not alone.
Recognize depression – While the holiday blues are a temporary, noncritical
condition, clinical depression is a serious medical concern. Symptoms of depression may include: feelings of sadness lasting for two weeks or more;
withdrawal from social activities; slowed thinking or delayed responses; lack
of interest in activities that were enjoyed previously; excessive worry; frequent crying; feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or helplessness; weight changes
and thoughts of suicide.
Seek help – If you even suspect that you may be depressed, it’s crucial to
contact your health care provider immediately. While depression is very
treatable, if left untreated, it can lead to life-threatening conditions.
I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and hope that all of you are able to find even
a small piece of joy.

GLORY TO GOD
I would like to share with you a beautiful old Christmas legend... the ancient legend tells of how God called the angels of heaven together one day for
a special choir rehearsal. He told them that he had a special song that he
wanted them to learn... a song that they would sing at a very significant occasion. The angels went to work on it. They rehearsed long and hard... with
great focus and intensity. In fact, some of the angels grumbled a bit... but God
insisted on a very high standard for his choir.
As time passed, the choir improved in tone, in rhythm, and in quality. Finally God announced that they were ready... but then, he shocked them a bit.
He told them that they would sing the song only once... and only on one night.
There would be just one performance of this great song they had worked on
so diligently. Again, some of the angels grumbled. The song was so extraordinarily beautiful and they had it down pat now... surely, they could sing it
many, many times. God only smiled and told them that when the time came,
they would understand.
Then one night, God called them together. He gathered them above a field
just outside of Bethlehem. "It's time," God said to them... and the angels sang
their song. O my, did they sing it! "Glory to God in the highest... and on earth
peace and good will toward all..." And as the angels sang, they knew there
would never be another night like this one, and that there would never be another birth like this birth in Bethlehem.
When the angels returned to heaven, God reminded them that they would
not formally sing that song again as an angelic choir, but if they wanted to,
they could hum the song occasionally as individuals. One angel was bold
enough to step forward and ask God why. Why could they not sing that majestic anthem again? They did it so well. It felt so right. Why couldn't they sing
that great song anymore? "Because," God explained, "my son has been born...
and now earth must do the singing!"
Once each year, Christmas comes around again to remind us of that...
God's Son has come to earth... and now we must do the singing! The good
news of Christmas is so awesome, so full of wonder, that it's not enough to
just talk about it. We have to burst forth in song.
Sing glory to God in the highest
Peace on earth and goodwill to men
Heavenly angels announce His arrival
Hallelujah to the Lord, Amen
Christmas blessings,
Chaplain Denny Bell
