DENNIS POINT MARINA & CAMPGROUND! JULY 2013 Around the Point A MESSAGE FROM MANAGEMENT As we marked the first half of the Summer Season with our f o u r t h o f Ju l y weekend, we hope ever yone is e n j o y i n g themselves. We are hopeful that the second half of the Summer last longer and is a little less wet than the first half. The campground and marina are more crowded than they have been in recent memor y and we would like to thank everyone for their patience as we work through some of the trash and other issues that come with the influx in new customers. As always, we welcome your suggestions or comments. ATM We have installed an ATM machine in the first floor 24 hour business center and it is up and running. Please let us know if you have any difficulties – usually it just requires a rebooting of the system. ! SEMPER FI FUND Through out the summer we will be holding weekly 50/50 raffles for the benefit of the Semper Fi Fund and have a donation container in the office. Please show your support. Over $900.00 have been raised so far. SUMMER HOURS OFFICE Mon. – Thurs. 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Friday – Sat. 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.* Sunday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. * on weekends when demand warrants the office will be open until 8 p.m. SMITH ISLAND Smith Island Cruises(www.smithislandcruises.com) currently runs day and overnight trips from Point Lookout and has agreed to run some from Dennis Point if demand warrants. We are currently exploring organizing a day trip for Sunday, July 28. The cruise would leave Dennis Point at 9 a.m. in the morning and return by 4:30. Once on Smith Island you can tour and have a nice lunch. The cost is $50 per person, which we think is a little high and does PAGE 1 DENNIS POINT MARINA & CAMPGROUND! not include lunch. If anyone is interested in going please let us know by Monday, July 22. We will compile a list and if we have enough interest will try to negotiate the price down and formalize the details. BOUNCE HOUSE/ SLIDE Dennis Point now has a bounce house and slide for small children. It is located across from the playground under the sail pavilion and will be operational on weekends throughout the Summer. FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND For those of you who were here, the fireworks extravaganza was a great success. Jimmer Gardiner delivered on his promise to make the fireworks something special. Although estimates are difficult to make, by some counts we had at least 3,000 people in attendance on land. As a business proposition, even the most successful fireworks show is a huge money loser. However, we think it helps engender a lot of good will in the community and is another example of what makes Dennis Point special. We would like to give a special thank you to our faithful volunteers: The Kraus Family ! Until it was purchased out of foreclosure in early 2012, Coles Point was falling into the River like a lot of other marinas. Since taking over, new management has spent millions to improve the place and is making great progress. We have entered into a reciprocal use agreement with Coles Point under which customers of Dennis Point may use the Coles Point Plantation facilities, including over night dockage, free of charge (other than paying for electric), and customers of Coles Point may use D e n n i s Po i n t f a c i l i t i e s u n d e r t h e s a m e arrangement. In order to take advantage of this program, customers of Dennis Point must make reser vations at Coles Point (804-472-4011) identifying themselves as customers of Dennis Point and show the Dennis Point issued customer identification cards. If you have any questions, please contact the Dennis Point office. ST. MARY’S COUNTY MAP & QUICK GUIDE At the request of Dennis Point, the St. Mary’s County Office of Tourism put together a simple map and quick guide of things to do in St. Mary’s County. GOLF CART PARADE A big congratulations to this years Golf Cart Parade Winners ! PAGE 4 DENNIS POINT MARINA & CAMPGROUND! JULY 2013 RAINBOW We have received countless questions about the majestic wooden boat owned by our neighbor, and friend, Reg Townsend. Reg has been so kind to provide us the following background. Rainbow is what I call, a “hybrid traditional design”. She has a number of features which have been distilled from many sources over a period of many years : Herreshoff, Chapell, Tarbox, and the host of nameless builders during the 18th and 19 th centuries who tried different ideas with varying degrees of success, but who, nevertheless, pushed forward the development of sail. The well known boat designer George Buehler refined my original lines for the ship, giving her a more refined hull form than mine. There still remain a few ideas of my own, however. The basic premise when designing both the hull and the rig was to include nothing which did not work well, which is to say, efficiently and easily. With one or two exceptions, this goal has been reasonably well met in this ship. The rig follows the general pattern of the Chesapeake “bugeye”, and is therefore called after a schooner : jib, fore, and main sails. Many first time visitors remark on the lack of sheet and halyard winches, to which I answer that she carries none because block and tackle are faster and easier to handle than winches, are safer, easier on the rig, and are repairable at sea. This is the general philosophy of the ship. Rainbow’s metrics are as follows : LOD 62 ft 10 in LWL 54 ft 4 in Sparred length 99 ft Beam 15 ft 5 in Draft 7 ft 2 in Displacement 81,900 lbs Sail Area2,233 sq ft The shape of the hull shows the widest point just forward of amidships. This allows for a quite fine r un in the quarters and no turbulence at the stern or in the wake. The amidships hull form is a moderate “wine glass” shape, which rises up to a slightly what has been called - “radical” counter. When heeled in a breeze with the edge of the deck just touching the sea, she is on her “running lines” with the best and longest shape going through the water and has been “clocked” at 11 ½ knots. Rainbow was built in Jakarta, Indonesia, by Reggie and company. Originally, the only yacht builder in the country had been hired to construct the ship, which was to have been completed within one year. However, at the end of this time, with the ship 50% over budget, and 5% completed, I took over the ! PAGE 5 DENNIS POINT MARINA & CAMPGROUND! JULY 2013 job myself, moving all of the pieces and materials to a vacant lot on the beach, setting up shop, and hiring my own workers, who numbered 18, at peak. The first step was to pour the lead keel, which weighs 25,000 lbs.. The ship was launched from the beach, with the help of a crane borrowed from my jobsite, 10 months later. At launch, the hull was complete with the deck beams installed, but without the decking. Two carpenters and a watchman were retained after launch until the decks and cabin sole were installed, then one carpenter and the watchman were laid off. The rest of the ship, including the spars were constructed by the remaining carpenter (Nisere) and myself. Despite her being rather large, as far as the average private ship is concerned, Rainbow is relatively easy to handle, as long as one remembers that many of her parts are individually rather large and heavy, and can, in consequence, become somewhat painful if not treated respectfully. The fore boom, for example, weighs in at around 350 pounds, the jib “boom”, 90 pounds. Both demand the utmost attention during sail handling underway, especially at sea. The bowsprit extends 17 feet beyond the knightheads and, at 700 pounds, plus rigging, when coupled with the motion of the ship, “takes no prisoners”, as one or two boats have found to their dismay. However, treated with proper regard, Rainbow is quite safe and pleasant to sail, and can be very exhilarating. Rainbow was sailed home to Cathagena Creek from Indonesia in 1998. Since that time, much work has been done to complete the interior, as the ship was forced to leave Indonesia unfinished due to the political situation there. More recently, she made a trip to Bermuda in 2011 with a crew of 4, and a three week voyage out of the Chesapeake and offshore in June of this year, singlehanded. !
