N E W S & N OT E S www.northeastbank-mn.com Winter 2013 “FOR THE LOVE OF TRAVEL” SPECIAL EDITION Warm Memories Fun Beach Reading by Colleen Corona • An Embarrassment of Mangoes by Ann Vanderhoof It’s amazing how quickly I can be transported away to memories of my past travels. By hearing a song, smelling a certain scent, or just by standing in a warm summer evening’s breeze and closing my eyes. For me, the planning process and anticipation before I depart on my latest adventure is almost as enjoyable as the trip itself. And the memories? The warm memories have the power to get me through yet another Minnesota winter. For this newsletter, we’ve put together some of our favorite travel memories. We hope you enjoy sharing our adventures, and take the time to share your stories with us, too (see page 4 for more details). COLLEEN Favorite domestic destination outside Minnesota: My favorite destination within the U.S. would be Florida. My husband and I visited Sanibel Island, Florida, a few years back after flying into Fort Myers. I enjoyed our time biking around the island, collecting shells and trying out various restaurants. Favorite international vacation destination: I was introduced to the Caribbean region on a honeymoon cruise in 1996, and my husband and I have been going back ever since. My favorite destination to date would be the island of Anguilla. The island does not have a cruise port or a commercial airport, so visitors arrive by either small plane or by taking a ferry over from the neighboring island of St. Martin. The relatively remote access to the island contributes to a very safe and “small town” feel. We rented a Jeep and visited nine of the island’s 30+ beaches and climbed down a 25-foot cliff to access a remote beach. Wish list domestic vacation destination: I would like to return to Washington, D.C., as I was young when I first visited. I would like to visit the Supreme Court, National Hall, the Holocaust Museum and the Smithsonian Institute. Wish list international vacation destination: The next destination I • A Trip to the Beach by Melinda Blanchard would like to visit is the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. I would like to stay at Crystals, a resort built into the hillside that features tree houselike cottages. The resort isn’t located directly on the beach, but each cottage has a phenomenal view of the Piton Mountains. While there, I would like to secure a cab for the day to experience the various areas of the island/local culture, take a day to climb the Gran Piton and visit a local chocolate plantation. Did I mention that I love the vacation planning process? Definition of a great vacation: For me, a great vacation starts with my husband, the beach, warm weather and a boutique resort. Visiting beaches (and sites) off the beaten path, and staying in a small resort are important aspects of my vacations. I prefer land vacations where we can rent a vehicle and be on our own schedule, trying out various restaurants and exploring. continued on page 2 > F R E E S P I R IT C L U B N E W S & N OT E S Isla Mujeres, Mex ico Maunday’s Fiji Island olorado elle, C Lake Isab Cabanas Copal, Tulum, M Warm Memories exico > continued from page 1 SUE Favorite domestic destination outside Minnesota: My favorite out-of-state destination is Colorado. When my grandson was 15, I took him and his friend to Colorado for a week. We went white water rafting, hiking and exploring old historic towns. One of the best experiences was watching the boys dirt bike down the mountain at Winter Park ski resort. The thrill and excitement on their faces was priceless! When my husband and I were first married we also lived in Denver for a little more than a year. We loved the weekend drives to the mountains and found the weather to be great. We had all the seasons that we love, but the winters did not get as cold as they do in Minnesota. Favorite international vacation destination: My favorite trip outside the U.S. was to New Zealand. It was a Free Spirit tour years ago that was 21 days long. We visited Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. New Zealand stole my heart; it was the most romantically beautiful place I have ever seen. The soft mountains, clear blue water, and the warm engaging people have not been beat by any of my other travels. Wish list domestic vacation destination: I would love to visit New England when the fall colors are at their peak. Wish list international vacation destination: Italy, of course! I want to travel to Tuscany, taste the wonderful red and white sauces, and sip the fabulous wines. Definition of a great vacation: A great vacation is spent with people you love, exploring new things. Laughing, loving and learning. KRISTY Favorite domestic destination outside Minnesota: My favorite vacation was when my husband, my kids and I flew to New Smyrna Beach, Florida. We all stayed in a condo directly on the beach. We visited Magic Kingdom, Sea World and Typhoon Lagoon. We also fished, played on the beach and swam in the pool. It was the perfect family vacation! Favorite international vacation destination: A few years ago, my family flew to Isla Mujeres, Mexico, for my brother-in-law’s wedding. In all, there were 70 of us staying at the same resort. The island was a mix of very nice resorts and an “Old Mexico” feel. The beaches la Bay, Anguil were gorgeous and the water was amazingly clear. Wish list international vacation destination: I would love to stay at the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort in the Bahamas. If I could go anywhere, I would visit somewhere with lots of nice beaches and warm weather. Definition of a great vacation: I like a balance of relaxation, sightseeing and experiencing local culture. I think it’s important to travel with friends/family who have similar interests yet appreciate doing things separately as well. DIANE Favorite domestic destination outside Minnesota: My daughter and I went to New York City in search of “designer purses” and we found them in underground places. While there, we did a city tour, harbor tour and saw a Broadway show. It was fun because we were equally adventurous. Favorite international vacation destination: My husband and I took a 15-day Heart of Europe Tour a few years back. We felt that we were able to see every major attraction in England, France, Germany and Italy. We visited www.northeastbank-mn.com From the October 2007 issue of Financial Journeys newsletter Retirement, Stage Two: IT’S TIME – REALIZE YOUR DREAMS AND START LIVING THEM If you forget to switch the alarm clock off on the first morning after you retire, what will you do when it wakes you up? Smile and hit the snooze button? Or leap up, ready for a job that no longer needs you? At first, retirement may seem like a vacation – a week or a month or two when you can travel, indulge in your hobbies, reconnect with your spouse and relatives. If you hit the snooze button, perhaps you’re on the way to making the mental adjustments needed to make the most of your new status. If, however briefly, you wonder what you can do now that your work is over, you may need some time to adjust to your new status. Suddenly, your time is yours to control, but your lifestyle has changed, too. Yes, regular paychecks disappear, but, more than that, your friends and colleagues are still in their working routines, making business decisions, attending meetings, going to conferences, interacting with others in myriad ways. Finally, you’re free of all that. And you miss it. One study reports 13% of preretirees think social connection loss will be a problem, but 22% of actual retirees say it really is. DON’T MISS THE MOMENT However, this is your time – time to realize all those retirement dreams you’ve been investing for over the years. An AARP study says the prime period for healthy retirees is between 65 and 74. Vigorous, mentally alert, physically capable men and women can climb the 422 steps to the top of Notre Dame in Paris to inspect the flying buttresses and the gargoyles, trek to Uluru/Ayers Rock in Australia or hike among the mountain peaks in the higher elevations of the Rockies. The happiest retirees report developing a new sense of self by learning, working at something they particularly enjoy and checking off places on their “must-visit” travel list. The key is the advanced planning and mental preparation they made to reorient their lives into a fulfilling retirement mode. PLANNING AHEAD If you have made the mental and social revisions necessary to live life to the fullest in your early retirement years, you may find this the ideal time to make adjustments to your financial plan as well. It could be time to consider changes that would create more of an income stream and preserve your wealth rather than trying to grow it. Gary L. We also took a cruise on the Rhine River, and went for a gondola ride in Venice. The sites to see in that rich historic area go on and on. Our heads were spinning the entire time we were there. Wish list domestic vacation destination: If I could visit anywhere in the U.S., I would take Highway 1 up the West Coast. Wish list international vacation destination: If I could go anywhere in the world for a special vacation, I would visit either Tahiti/Fiji or take an African safari. Definition of a great vacation: To me, a great vacation starts with nice weather, fun traveling companions and minimal travel hassles. Someplace by the water is always a plus.
