Notes from the President
What’s Happening This Month
Thank you to Karen and Lowell Rothenberger for
chairing our annual Christmas
Brunch. The Columns Banquet Facility was a
great venue, the food was awesome, and we had
record attendance of 100 members and guests. I
would also like to thank the membership for their
generosity in donating Toys for Tots. It was also
nice to see a few Corvettes in the parking
lot. Maybe next year I won't be so anxious to put
my car in storage.
Looking ahead to 2016 several members have
expressed a desire to participate in a few out of
town trips. For instance: Bloomington Gold, June
23-25, Indianapolis, IN; NCCC Convention, July
17-22, Omaha, NE; Mecum Auction, July 21-23,
Harrisburg, PA; Vettes at the Beach, July 30-31,
Syracuse, NY and of course Corvettes of Carlisle,
August 25-28, Carlisle, PA. So mark your new
calendars for some of these events.
Of course planning is in the early stages for our
annual car show at Salvatore's chaired by John
Biggie. The 12th Annual Corvette Caravan is
looking for new chairpersons but Skip and Pete
have volunteered to help out a new team. Of
course we all look forward to our late winter Club
Anniversary Dinner ( aka Installation Dinner),
chaired by Bob Kaczmarek, our winter pizza and
wings party, ice cream socials, big summer picnic,
along with local cruises and car shows around
Western NY.
If you have any ideas for some new event or
activity you feel the members would enjoy, please
bring it to the attention of Lynda Graham our
Activity Chairperson.
Have a Happy and Prosperous New Year!
Save the Wave!

Greetings of Holiday Cheer from your friends at the
National Corvette Museum!
T’was the night before Christmas and in the garage.
Santa stared at his calendar, it was no mirage.
"The 24th of December, it got here so quick.
I need to be going soon, lickity split!"
"It’s 80 degrees so the sleigh just won’t do.
Let’s start up the Vette and the GPS, too."
So he fires up the engine, gives the reindeer the night off, and peels out of the
driveway faster than saying Hasselhoff.
"First let's make a pit stop at Zora’s place, to check out his rides and challenge him to a
Motorsports Park race."
The guys had fun racing, trading Vette stories and tips, “But I must be going,” Santa
said, “Christmas is coming quick.”
And as he departed, you could hear Zora shout, “Burn rubber, my friend, and spread
Corvettes about!”
Season's Greetings and Happy Holidays!

Corvette Cloth Seats – More (or less) than meets the eye
The 2015 Corvette has a variety of configurations – engine/transmission, performance exhaust,
sound system upgrades, and much more, but classic Corvette restoration projects have a variation
that you won’t see any longer in modern Corvette culture. Some might consider that a blessing in
disguise, but to purists, especially where interior authenticity is sought after, it cannot be overlooked.
No, we’re not talking about dashboards, or lighting systems, but rather Cloth seats. Whether you
realize it or not, cloth seats were in fact an option ‘once upon a time’, so there is no mistaking the fact
that Corvette restoration projects can, and sometimes do include restoring to factory specs, where
some might not consider the factory specifications to be truly “Corvette worthy”. To the new
enthusiast or a brand new Corvette owner, the idea of cloth might seem like a step down or
backwards in the styling they seek, but cloth seating as original components have been around for
almost as long as the original Corvette itself.
First introduced in in 1977, factory cloth seats were considered a good baseline model for which, yes,
leather would certainly be considered an upgrade, but when restoring a Corvette to its original
configuration, a cloth C3 configuration is incredibly valuable. Original cloth seat covers were actually
leather seats with cloth inserts, which came in 6 optional colors. From 1978-80, Corvette seats were
still being made with cloth inserts, but color options were decreased. Towards the end of the C3 era,
the seats were made entirely out of cloth, again, having as many as 6 different colors to choose from
– charcoal, medium red, camel, dark blue, silver and finally, medium cinnabar.
Following the end of the C3 era, the C4 Corvettes held on to the tradition of having cloth seats as a
baseline, standard option, with leather seats being an upgrade. Of course, many Corvette owners,
then and now, consider the idea of cloth as less than desirable, but this had a more positive impact
on the Corvette’s value with a cloth configuration than could have been foreseen in the early 1980s.
Primarily, the standard was to opt for the more expensive leather seats, this meant less numbers of
original Corvettes with cloth seats, thereby increasing the rarity of those configurations and
subsequently, increasing both their intrinsic and historical values. Take for example, the 1990 C4
Corvette, there were only 540 original cloth seat configurations made for that model year, compared
with the overall 26,412 models made in production that year. That represents a little over 2% of the
entire model run for 1990.
CORVETTES of BUFFALO
4
The reasoning behind including cloth seats at the time made sense to many shoppers, it lowered the
entry price during a time when gas prices were making owning a high performance vehicle less
palatable for some, plus there was much discussion about the heat from the vinyl leather seats, and
sliding around on the leather seats, which was not a problem with cloth seating. All arguments, pro
and con, regarding cloth seating seemed to fade in the face of both a lack of interest and need and
finally the cloth seating standard was removed finally from the Corvette line in 1994. Since cloth seats
have been completely absent from the Corvette lexicon for over 20 years now, it makes the original
restoration of these classics even more important and valuable today.
Depending on what you have for your C3/C4 restoration project, you may see a cloth seat restoration
as beneath you, but in reality, the scarcity of these models makes them even more potentially
valuable, not less. We like leather seats in Corvettes as much as the next enthusiast, but in the end,
what makes a restoration project special isn’t necessarily just what we want to do with it, but rather
keeping the project true to the original time period, the configurations of that era and finally to the
Corvette brand itself. Whichever way you choose cloth seats in Corvettes were around for a fairly
significant period of time and we can’t look forward without paying our respects to our past.

Pontiac Banshee: Killed by the Corvette
Before he founded the company that would bear his name and created the car that
would become an iconic part of cinema, John DeLorean was a madman in a lab at
Pontiac. He was responsible for the Pontiac GTO, and wanted to continue furthering the
brand’s performance stature. He had his sights set on an incredible car called the
Banshee. Too bad General Motors can be a hot mess at times.
GM has this very backwards, often schizophrenic approach to the Chevrolet Corvette.
No car among any of its brands can have performance greater than that of the vaunted
Corvette. It is an approach that has killed many cars through the years. And the Banshee
is one of them.
In March of 1964, the Ford Mustang entered the market, and as it became a sales
success other automakers scrambled to build a competitor. DeLorean and his team at
Pontiac set about creating the XP-883 concept. It was a small two-seater with a long,
flowing hood and short rear deck. Among the group of concepts crafted, two drivable
prototypes emerged. One had a straight six while the other featured a V8. The sixcylinder model weighed only 2,200 pounds. It sounded like an ideal sports car.
Around the same time, the third-generation Corvette was under development
(the Corvette Mako Shark concept came out in 1961), and if DeLorean had his way, the
XP-883, which they called the Banshee, would have outperformed the Corvette. It would
have has just as much power with the V8, but weighed less. This did not sit well with GM
brass, which instructed DeLorean to cease all work on the car.

2015-2016 Corvette Stingray Offers Eight-Speed Automatic
Paddle-shift gearbox rivals dual-clutch performance, enhances efficiency
An eight-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission is offered in the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray for 20152016, enhancing the performance and efficiency of the 2014 North American Car of the Year. Designed and
built by GM, the new transmission delivers world-class shift times that rival the best dual-clutch designs.
The all-new, GM-designed 8L90 eight-speed is expected to contribute up to 5-percent greater efficiency,
when compared to the previous six-speed automatic. EPA fuel economy test results are pending and will be
announced later. It also makes the Corvette Stingray one of the few sports cars to offer the choice of a
conventional manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic.
“Corvette Stingray's new eight-speed automatic delivers the comfort and drivability of a true automatic
transmission, as well as lightning-fast shifts and the manual control that enhance the performance-driving
experience,” said Bill Goodrich, assistant chief engineer for eight-speed automatic transmissions. “It was
designed to enhance the Stingray's driving experience, with performance on par with dual-clutch designs, but
without sacrificing refinement.”
The available 8L90 transmission is based on the same eight-speed automatic that will be offered on the
supercharged 2015 Corvette Z06, but with unique clutch and torque converter specifications matched to the
torque capacity of the Stingray's LT1 6.2L naturally aspirated engine.
For performance driving, the transmission offers full manual control via steering wheel paddles. A new
transmission-control system and unique algorithms deliver shift performance that rivals the dual-clutch/semiautomatic transmissions found in many supercars - but with the smoothness and refinement that comes with
a conventional automatic fitted with a torque converter.
The transmission controller analyzes and executes commands 160 times per second. Wide-open throttle
upshifts are executed up to eight-hundredths of a second quicker than those of the dual-clutch transmission
offered in the Porsche 911.
Smaller steps between gears, compared to the previous six-speed automatic, keep the engine within the
sweet spot of the rpm band, making the most of its horsepower and torque to optimize performance and
efficiency. With four gearsets and five clutches, creative packaging enables the new eight-speed automatic to
fit the same space as the previous six-speed automatic. Extensive use of aluminum and magnesium make it
more than eight pounds, or 4 kg, lighter than the six-speed. Design features that reduce friction contribute to
the expected 5-percent greater efficiency. The 8L90 is built at GM's Toledo, Ohio, transmission facility.

Corvette Graveyard “A Ghastly Sight!”
We all know that everything that lives will eventually die. However, this is not a mantra of any
Corvette owner or enthusiast. On the contrary, any Corvette about to die receives the utmost
attention toward restoration and preservation – well, usually.
That is why our hearts dropped as we were browsing the Internet and came across a ghastly sight
that looked like a bunch of Corvette carcasses abandoned in a forest. How could this be? We
wondered.
Turns out that somewhere in the outskirts of Bridgewater in Nova Scotia, Canada, there is a Corvette
Cemetery. Rows and rows of decaying remnants of what once were enthusiasts’ dreams.
CORVETTES of BUFFALO
8
Many of the cars have been outgrown by the surrounding vegetation amid what has been described
as a Corvette graveyard, junkyard and salvage yard.
Some of the ‘Vettes in the cemetery are virtually complete while others are bare chassis.
The somber collection serves as a parts donor for still alive Corvettes. The graveyard is also
equipped with a workshop where ‘Vette bodies, panels, and parts sit on shelves until needed or
requested.
The good news is that some of these ‘Vettes are repaired and restored and kept on the warehouse
floor waiting for their next ride.
Enthusiasts here in the U.S., however, don’t need to look that far. Dino’s Corvette Salvage &
Sales in Picayune, MS, claims to be the world’s largest Corvette-Exclusive salvage yard.
CORVETTES of BUFFALO
9
They purchase wrecked Corvettes from major insurance companies on a weekly basis to supply their
customers with the best selection of used Corvette parts.
They have a large selection of hard to find NOS and OEM Corvette parts backed by a 30-day
warranty.
Recently, Dino’s Corvette Salvage expanded their operations to include a new 10,000 square foot
facility to serve their customers. The new facility boasts an indoor showroom and over four acres of
fenced land for all the damaged Corvettes. So if you are on the lookout for hard to find parts or are
planning to restore that old ‘Vette, these Corvette-Exclusive graveyards may the answer.

KELLEY BLUE BOOK NAMES
2016 CORVETTE A BEST BUY
November 13, 2015
Kelley Blue Book has announced their 2016 Best Buy Award Winners, and taking the
top spot in the Performance Car category for the 2nd year in a row is the 2016
Chevrolet Corvette. Contenders for the recognition this year included the 2016
Chevrolet Camaro V6, 2016 Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang, 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata
and 2016 Scion FR-S.
“It was last year’s winner, the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, that carried the day on
the strength of overall performance that compares favorably with sports cars costing
tens of thousands of dollars more,” KBB.com editors wrote. “But beyond stellar
performance, the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray offers the kind of comfort and
drivability that takes it from a weekend- or special occasion-only fun car to a truly
engaging vehicle perfectly suited as a daily driver.”

Vets ‘n Vettes 2015 – Bowling Green, KY
Halyna & myself attended Vets n’ Vettes sponsored by Exxon Mobil November 5 – 7,
2015 at the National Corvette Museum. Weather was in the high 70’s all three days. Over
120 corvettes showed up from various states for this event.
Thursday kicked off with registration at 8am. Fort Campbell & Fort Knox sent wounded
vets to enjoy rides in participant’s corvettes at the MSP track as well as lunch and tours of
the museum and assembly plant. This year the event was open to all veteran’s, not just the
wounded vets.
Staging of participant’s corvette’s at MSP track was at 9:00am. About 9:30 the
wounded soldier’s arrived. Driver’s meeting was held to explain procedure’s and safety
precautions. About twenty corvettes were in each group, with myself being in group 7 of 8.
First few groups contained the wounded vets and following groups contained other vets and
passenger’s whom just wanted a ride. Participants gave an excited soldier a ride around the
track five times before coming back in for another staging. Participates could take as many
different soldiers as many times as you wanted in the allotted time frame.
First time I took a World War Two veteran around five times. Second time I took a
Vietnam Veteran around five times. Third time Halyna rode with me. Fourth and final time
I was by myself. Each lap consisted of 3 miles and 23 curves. I was able to exceed speeds in
excess of 85mph and some curves at 87 g’s. Everyone enjoyed it except Halyna. I don’t need
to worry about her going around the track with me again. AWESOME time for a total of 20
laps. Last year 2014 we were only allowed 1 lap each time for safety, being the track had
just opened for a total of 4 laps. About noon we returned to the museum for the
Presentation of Colors and a Welcome Luncheon. After the luncheon we toured the
Assembly Plant to view the 2016 corvettes being built at 180 per day.
Day two consisted of a cruise/tour of the South Union Shaker Village and a family
style lunch at Federal Grove, 475 East Main St, Auburn, KY 42206. Excellent food -tasting
the Kentucky South food. Restaurant was about 35 miles from the museum and well worth
the trip. Returned to the Museum to attend seminar’s available to all participant’s. I
attended Charles B. Wade’s role in JFK’s funeral. Very informative. Then toured the
National Corvette Museum.
Third day consisted of Event Group picture at the NCM Logo Circle. Over 80 corvettes
participated in the Bowling Green Veteran’s Day Parade. Finally, a buffet lunch at the
American Legion Post 23. We had a fantastic time all three days. Next year the event is
scheduled for Nov 3 – 5, 2016. Registration opens about July time frame. Rooms can be
booked in January 2016 at about $50.00 day versus $150.00 closer to the event.

Corvettes of Buffalo Christmas Brunch 2015
On Sunday, December 6, 2015, nearly 100 members, prospective members
and guests gathered at The Columns Banquets for our annual Christmas Brunch.
Our guests were two Marines, Jose Rubalcava and Daniel Heider. After brunch,
they loaded up “tons” of unwrapped Toys for Tots. Thank you to all who
donated the toys.
The Columns Banquets served us in an elegant new banquet room with a
lovely view of their back patio area. The food was as delicious as the view was
spectacular. We were treated to cheese and crackers and three types of juices.
Brunch consisted of salad, various relishes, mixed vegetables, chicken Marsala,
roast beef and rolls, mashed potatoes and gravy, pasta and condiments. From
all accounts everything was great!
Once again, we had the traditional centerpiece, a miniature Christmas tree,
to be enjoyed by all and taken home by the guest who had the closest birthday
to December 6th. Our Corvettes of Buffalo pocket calendars and candy canes
were favors for everyone. If you were unable to attend the Brunch, we will have
your calendars at the January meeting. (See Barb Lipome)
COB sponsored a raffle from which 10 lucky people received $50.00 each.
T-shirts from our caravan and goody bags were also raffled off. It was great to
get together and see everyone in their holiday best. A special thank you for all
the great toys. (Look for our Marines in future Basil Toys for Tots
commercials.)
We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and wish you all a Happy
New Year.

My name is Ed Ehbauer. I live in Barker, NY. I have a 2007 Corvette. This is
my second one. The first one was a 1965 back in 1965. It only took almost fifty
years to get the second one. I have been thinking about it for the last five or six
years. Last year I found one I liked. I enjoyed the Caravan this year and hope to
be on the next one. I’ll see everyone at the next meeting.

1964 Corvette Convertible Restoration---Update #1
This article will be on what I found with the electrical system and when I tried to operate
the heater system. I could hear the motor running but no air came out of the vents, so I
knew something was living in it at some time. To get the heater unit out I had to remove
the glove box, radio, clock, and all the duct work. I found a nest on both sides of the heater
core that I had to clean out. This was a good time to test the core for leaks and it held water
pressure. I cleaned all the parts and reassembled the heater unit.
The clock didn't work so I took it apart and cleaned, lubed and painted hands. I worked
on the motor and got lucky to get it working even if it was 51 years old. When I tested the
radio it was dead so it will either be sent out for repairs or replaced with a newer style radio
that fits in the old radio holes.
The wiper motor didn't work so while the heater assembly was out I could get at the bolts
to get it out. The wire harness that was connected to this motor looked burned up, so the
dash main wire harness will need to be replaced. I had a spare wiper motor for my 65 Vette
that I tested good 25 years ago. It was never used and must have seized over the years.
When I benched tested it now it didn't work so it was taken apart cleaned freed the
armature and it tested good again.
To get the main wire harness out the dash board had to come out. The steering column
was disconnected and removed. At this point I could pull the dash out a few inches to
disconnect the wire harness from it. Next article I will put the new wire harness and recheck
everything.
