In TABLOID, Academy Award-winner Errol Morris concocts another jaw-dropping
portrayal, this time of a phenomenally driven woman, Joyce McKinney, whose
romantic obsessions and delusions catapulted her over the edge into scandal-sheet
notoriety and an unimaginable life as a tabloid sensation in the late 1970’s. Long
before the days of Lindsay, Britney and the 24-hour news cycle, Joyce McKinney
reigned as the ensnaring Femme Fatale accused of sexual defiance. In TABLOID, she is
back, and Morris offers up his best guilty treasure.

Errol Morris Proves Master
of Timing with Tabloid

“I don‟t generally like anything I do…films, I mean,” director Errol Morris said at a Peggy
Siegal Co.-hosted screening of his latest documentary, “Tabloid,” on Monday night.
“But, I have to say, I really like this movie. Maybe that means that my faculties are
failing me, but I like it. It may lack the gravitas of the Cuban Missile Crisis, but I liked
this.”
The film focuses on the story of Joyce McKinney, a former pageant queen accused of
traveling to England in the Seventies to kidnap and brainwash a Mormon missionary
who was her romantic interest at the time. More accurately it focuses on how the story,
dubbed “The Mormon Sex in Chains Case,” played out in the British gossip rags. It‟s a
tale that features more than one seedy reporter of questionable morals, and is almost
too timely, as if Morris had anticipated last week‟s meltdown at News of the World,
where reporters allegedly hacked into the phone messages and e-mails of crime
victims, police and politicians, among other charges.
The fortuitous timing might have had something to do with the enthusiastic audience
that packed into the West Village‟s IFC Center for the film and subsequent questionand-answer session. Guests included Kirsten Dunst, Spike Jonze, Horatio Sanz, Chiara
Clemente, Maggie Betts, a black-tie-ready Courtney Love and nightlife impresarios Matt
Kliegman and Carlos Quirarte, who hosted the after party at the Westway.
“It‟s the baby in the bathwater argument,” Morris explained to WWD. “I‟m sympathetic.
We love tabloids. There‟s something very deep and essential to tabloid stories. And
what happened in that scenario.…It‟s not about good or bad, it‟s about journalistic
excess — and unscrupulous methods where anything goes and anything‟s OK.”
The director continued to riff on the primal allure of tabloids.
“Why are we attracted to these stories?” he asked. “I think there‟s a double edge to
them. The appeal to be really glad that it was something that we didn‟t do. Some stories
touch us, we can see ourselves in them, as them. Stories which are about everybody
and about nobody. The ordinary and the excessive rolled into one nice package.”
Like much of Morris‟ past fare, “Tabloid” makes use of unreliable narrators — a term he
approves of.
“We‟re all unreliable narrators,” he said. “I don‟t think there‟s any other kind.”
Tabloid Scandal

The final Harry Potter movie conjured a heck of a red carpet last night, but in a way, the
more sensational cinematic experience was downtown, where documentary filmmaker
Errol Morris screened his latest, Tabloid, at the IFC Center for a crowd that included
Spike Jonze and Kirsten Dunst.
Through interviews and animations, the film relates the bizarre tale of Joyce McKinney,
a former beauty queen who followed the Mormon man she loved to England. Allegedly,
she then abducted him, strapped him to a bed, and had her way with the object of her
unrestrained affection for three days. McKinney's arrest and court hearing generated
some of the juiciest headlines of the seventies and ignited a war between the British
tabloids, with the Daily Express portraying her as the embodiment of love unleashed,
and the Daily Mirror and The Sun caricaturing her as a seasoned bondage pro.
Throughout the screening, choice phrases like "Manacled Mormon" had Courtney Love
guffawing in her seat. But the film dances irresistibly between the relatable and the
absurd. "There's something deep and essential about tabloid stories," Morris said,
before making his way to the after-party at Carlos Quirarte and Matt Kliegman's new
joint, The Westway (which, in a reversal of plans, turns out not to be a strip club).
Continued Morris, "They're stories that are about everybody and nobody, the ordinary
and the excessive." Morris may have gotten more than he bargained for with this one:
McKinney showed up at a recent L.A. screening in a sequin jumpsuit and harangued
him, and has threatened a lawsuit. But Dunst, who was seeing Tabloid for the second
time in a week, said she considers the whole saga actor‟s gold: “I want to play her in a
movie!”

Courtney Love seemed to identify with Joyce McKinney -- the ex-beauty queen who
became a UK tabloid sensation in the '70s -- at the premiere of Errol Morris'
documentary, "Tabloid."
Love told fellow viewers at the IFC Center this week that she was recently "sold out" by
a friend for a tabloid story. Meanwhile, Kirsten Dunst, who was seeing the film for the
second time, was overheard saying she wants to play McKinney in a Hollywood
production. Nick Denton hosted a separate party for the movie at his loft.

Mark Lipson, Errol Morris and IFC's Jonathan Sehring bring back the 1970s.
"This is my homage to human normalcy," Errol Morris joked Monday night after the IFC
Center screening of his latest doc, "Tabloid."
Sundance Selects' pic follows the lurid tale of former Miss Wyoming Joyce McKinney,
whose romantic obsessions and delusions made her a tabloid sensation in the late
1970s.
McKinney sometimes publicly debates aspects of the film with Morris, usually during
Q&A sessions following screenings.
McKinney decided not to attend the intimate but star-studded Gotham event.
"She's got other plans," producer Mark Lipson explained.
At the Westway afterparty, Morris said that McKinney had an actress in mind to play her
in a Hollywood movie version: Katherine Heigl. "But Kirsten Dunst was here tonight and
told me that she wanted to play Joyce. So we will see who wins out."
Dunst sat next to Spike Jonze and across the aisle from a decked-out Courtney Love.
What Do You Think OfthTennessee Thomas' Frilly, Girly Look?
By: Kristian Laliberte/ Sunday, July 17 2011
There's no doubt about it, Tabloid , the new film from Academy Award-winning director
Errol Morris, is making headlines for all the right reasons. Chronicling the notorious
sexual scandal of Joyce McKinney in the '70s—that generations version of Lindsay
Lohan—the flick was called "marvelously bizarre" by The New York Times' A.O. Scott.
Equally marvelous (and perhaps a bit bizarre) was Tennessee Thomas' outfit at
Tabloid's New York premiere, put on by Peggy Siegal. Sporting a vintage Marc by Marc
Jacobs crocheted dress, white tights, and black-and-white oxfords from Legacy, The
Like drummer reminded us of a grown-up Madeleine gone girly alternative, with
Cleopatra style eye makeup and a pair of geek glasses nonchalantly tucked in to her
frilly collar.

„Tabloid‟ war: Actresses itching to play whacked-out star of
documentary
By: Richard Johnson/Wednesday, July 13, 2011
Joyce McKinney, the fascinating subject of Errol Morris‟ new documentary “Tabloid,”
could be the role of a lifetime for one lucky actress if her bizarre story ever gets adapted
into a Hollywood movie.
Maybe that‟s why Kirsten Dunst and Courtney Love came to Monday night‟s New
York premiere of the doc — the latest by the acclaimed director of “The Thin Blue Line”
and “The Fog of War” — about McKinney and what was dubbed “The Case of the
Manacled Mormon.”
McKinney, a former Wyoming beauty queen, became a tabloid sensation in the late
1970s when she was charged with kidnapping Mormon missionary Kirk Anderson,
chaining her unrequited crush to a bed in an English country cottage, and forcing him to
have sex with her for three days.
After jumping bail and fleeing from Britain while disguised as a mime (yes, you read that
right), McKinney made headlines again in 2008 when she resurfaced as Bernann
McKinney — a North Carolina woman who had five puppies cloned in Korea from her
dead pit bull, Booger.
Who wouldn‟t want to play such a kooky character? Dunst, who won best actress at the
Cannes Film Festival in May for Lars Von Trier‟s “Melancholia,” stayed late after the
premiere with Spike Jonze and Horatio Sanz at the after-party at Westway in New
York City.
Morris told Forbes.com‟s Bill McCuddy that he‟d love to see a big-screen adaptation of
the story, and that either Dunst or Love would make a great McKinney.
Meanwhile, the real McKinney has waged a loud battle with Morris over what she calls
the many factual discrepancies in the well-documented film. Morris told McCuddy he
has no idea where this woman gets all the money to fly to screenings of the film at
festivals in Austin, L.A. and New York where she ultimately heckles the movie and
jumps on stage to challenge him. “But I love it and encourage her to keep doing it,”
Morris said.
And if a movie version does get made, who should play the eccentric Morris in the final
reel?
“I‟d love to be in it,” he admitted with a smile.

THE AUDIENCE at Monday night‟s screening of director Errol Morris„ “Tabloid”
documentary didn‟t know quite how to react to the real life tale of Joyce McKinney, the
Southern beauty queen who became obsessed with a Mormon missionary, followed him
to Britain, kidnapped him and became, for a time, one of the most notorious women in
the UK, a darling of Fleet Street scandal sheets.
Joyce is clearly “barking mad” as one of the tabloid editors describes her, but she is
also extremely intelligent and quite appealing, even so many decades after her 1970‟s
heyday. (In later years she became infamous all over again, when she cloned a litter of
puppies.)
“Tabloid” is 88 minutes of crazy. Depending on your taste for that sort of thing, it is very
funny or quite unsettling. (Think “Grey Gardens.”) And while Joyce herself is no bed of
roses, the men who made a living pursuing her come off even worse — smirking and
laughing and unashamed about prying into every aspect of her life.
I will say this: “Tabloid” is mighty convincing anti-Mormon propaganda. When Joyce
gets started on how Mormonism is really a cult, well … let‟s just say this will not be a
fave at Mitt Romney‟s house.
The screening was at the IFC Center, way downtown. There was an after-party at a
place called The Westway, near the Westside Highway. It used to be a gentlemen‟s
club.
Courtney Love, Kirsten Dunst, Spike Jonze and others wandered about. Parker
Posey and Joan Rivers were promised, but seemed to be missing. (Actually, Joan was
just an honorary co-host and was not really expected.) I will say the food was
impressive. Pizza. Big boxes and big slices of excellent pizza. None of the usual teeny
burgers and crab cakes and crackers enlivened a dab of something scary-looking.
As Village Voice scribe Michael Musto said, “Screw Parker Posey. I‟m having pizza.
I‟m happy.”

Kirsten Dunst dropped by the party for Errol Morris‟ “Tabloid” (apparently she‟s quite
fascinated with the doc‟s subject, Joyce McKinney). Directed by the Oscar-winner, the
film is a portrait of McKinney whose romantic obsessions and delusions catapulted her
over the edge into scandal-sheet notoriety and an unimaginable life as a tabloid
sensation in the late 1970s. The official guest list at the Westside Manhattan party

As the News of the World heads to the afterlife, at least Tabloid is opening.
That's Oscar winner Errol Morris's zingy documentary about Joyce McKinney
(above), the former Miss Wyoming who tracked down the love of her life, found out he'd
succumbed to Mormonism, and abducted him for love's sake.
At last night's premiere, Morris talked about why we adore this stuff.
"There's something very deep and essential about tabloid stories," he said.
"It's something we're glad we didn't do.
"There's a line in a William Wyler movie: 'Love has to stop somewhere short of insanity.'
"I don't think that principle applies to Joyce!"
But Morris said such stories also touch us because "we can see ourselves in them.
"They're about everybody and nobody.
"The ordinary and the excessive rolled into one nice package."
They're so appealing that some people will hack into voice mail and pay off police to get
the story.
But that's that other tabloid.

She regularly shocks on the red-carpet with her revealing and sometimes wacky attire.
But while Courtney Love slipped into a refreshingly sophisticated black gown for the

some odd purple patchy elbows.
The discolouration appeared to be a nasty bruise or perhaps some dry patchy skin.

And it certainly seemed to be bothering Courtney as she was well aware of her injury.
The singer was later seen clutching her limb as she continued to pose on the New York

Despite the discolouration, the Hole singer looked glamorous in her slinky gown, which
clung to her slim figure in all the right places and had an intricate and sexy back with it's
tiny straps.
Courtney accessorised with a plethora of diamonds in the form of some bracelets,
hoops earrings and rings.
She wore her blonde hair in a tousled bob and had minimal make-up on her
complexion, letting her lips stand-out with some rose red lipstick.
Tabloid is an American documentary that 'tells the story of a former Miss Wyoming,
Joyce McKinney, whose quest for one true love led her across the globe and onto the
pages of tabloid newspapers'.
Courtney meanwhile, has once again been unlucky in love, recently splitting from
boyfriend Henry Allsopp.
Last month, the Hole singer moved out of her former flame's London mansion after
agreeing to separate just nine months into their relationship.
Their whirlwind romance began last October, when the 46-year-old moved in with the
British aristocrat one month after meeting him.
A source told the Daily Express: 'She had moved in within a month of meeting Henry
last November and made herself quite at home.
'Most of the family were alarmed by how besotted he was and feared she had delusions
of landing herself a title.
Ouch! The singer was later seen clutching her limb as she continued to pose on the New York City
pavement
'She used to joke about becoming Lady Love.'
Allsopp, 37, is an art dealer who is also the godson of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and
brother of TV presenter Kirsty Allsopp.
Despite their short-lived romance, Courtney even credited Henry with 'saving' her after
she moved in with him to 'detox' from prescription drugs.

The serial dater has already indulged in several flings following husband Kurt Cobain's
death in 1994.
Courtney has shared her bed with Smashing Pumpkins star Billy Corgan, Fight Club
actor Edward Norton and Nine Inch Nails singer Trent Reznor.
The mum-of-one also seems to have a taste for British comedians, having enjoyed brief
spells with Russell Brand, Noel Fielding and Steve Coogan.
