Meet the Artists - Monday August 1st 7 pm
Join us in the Painted Mountain Ballroom for an evening of fun
and laughter. She’s been traveling all over the world, making
presentations to conventions and conferences; The Crafty Chica,
Kathy Cano Murillo, will give us her take on: BRANDING 101:
How to Share Your Story in Order to Stand Out in a Busy Industry. Afterwards, enjoy chatting with the teaching artists and taking a look at
their project samples. You might see something that you just
have to learn about so come to our check-in tables and register!

Checking In and Workshops
Before your first workshop, check in at our welcome tables in our
lobby to receive your badge, tote bag, Shopping Extravaganza
ticket and any pre-ordered items (“Fair” ticket/apron/tshirt). Our
tables will open Tuesday, August 2nd at 8 am until 6:00 pm &
daily except Saturday. Saturday check in ( 10 - 4) and is available
only for those taking their first workshop on Saturday.
Classroom assignments will be available online within a few
days. It’s a good idea to become a member of our Yahoo group if
you aren’t already - this and other items of interest are announced
there before any other sites.
They will also be listed on a whiteboard in our check-in area. It’s
a good idea to check it before each workshop, just in case of
classroom reassignment. The white board is also the place to see
if you are a winner of a daily prize. Winners must personally pick
up their prize during the event.
2
Full day workshops begin at 9 am, lunch break is from 12:00 to
1:30, classes end at 4:30. Evening workshops begin at 6:30 pm
until 9:30 pm - please be punctual - Instructors don’t have time
to begin anew or bring latecomers up to speed. Cell phones
should be turned off or set to silent. As a courtesy to others, all
calls must be taken outside of the classrooms.
Supplies
Order in advance from our on-site vendor and your supplies will
be ready and waiting when you arrive. Tools and supplies are
available through The Occasional Artist: 623 - 847-2215 or email
[email protected]
Taking Supplies to the Classroom
Some classrooms do not have space for large rolling bags. By
limiting the space your supply containers require, you save space
for everyone to move around, see demos and create.
Lunches and Breaks
The hotel will have a special AU buffet Tuesday thru Friday.
During the remainder of the event, there will be a pre-order menu.
Just fill out your order before 10 am (forms will be at our check
in desk and at the hostess desk at breakfast) and your order will
be ready and waiting at lunch time. The Venue page has a link to
the buffet and pre-order menus.
Snacks and assorted drinks can be purchased at the gift shop or
from the vending machines near the elevators on each floor. Other food & drink items are available in the lounge between meal
times.
Oscar’s Coffee Bar
So sorry ladies, especially those of you who enjoyed the delivery
to your classrooms by Ted. Unfortunately for us and our coffee
needs, Ted recently moved to Michigan to join the family business. Good luck Ted, we’ll miss you.
3
Manager’s Reception
Complimentary drinks & snacks for registered hotel guests are
served daily at the Manager’s Reception in the lounge area from
5:30 ’til 7:30 pm - it’s a great time to get together with other AU
artists, have fun, make new friends.
Something New
This year, in addition to the complimentary snacks and drinks,
there will be a happy hour menu with a variety of offerings, all
priced at $5. This is a welcome addition, expanding not only the
happy hour options, but perhaps become dinner too!
Silent Auction
Art created by instructors plus others artists will be on display
Tuesday thru Monday. Enter by writing your name and bid
amount on the appropriate bid sheet. Winners will be announced
at 12:55 pm on Monday, August 8th. All of the money raised will
go to Youth Development Institute’s art program for the kids. Our
donations have funded a new computer (twice) plus tools and
supplies YDI would not otherwise have been able to purchase.

Saturday Evening
Come to the “AU County Fair”
Where you’ll be entertained, (although Criss Angel isn’t available, we found a great substitute) where you’ll eat and drink and
visit the booths. The “AU County Fair” is different than all other
county fairs. There will be no bake off contests, no pies and jellies to judge nor any farm animals. So, you must be wondering
“what in the heck will be in those booths if not food and animals?” Well, since this is an art retreat, those booths will be
manned by artists and vendors leading you in free make ’n takes.
You’ll have time to visit several make ’n take booths throughout
the evening AND have time to watch the entertainment - and perhaps have your fortune told. Registered attendees $20 and Guests
$25 gain your entrance to the event plus a snack and drink
(alcoholic or non-alcoholic). The cash bar will remain open all
evening for mixed drinks, beer or non-alcoholic beverages. Tickets available until Wednesday, August 3rd, 1:30 at our Check In
tables. Did I mention prize drawings? Must be present to win.

Won’t you remember our wonderful sponsors as you shop
throughout the year for your art supplies? Their generosity makes
the daily prize drawings and the Saturday night gifts possible.
Please let them know that you received their donation at Art Unraveled so that they’ll continue to sponsor us!
* Gift Certificates good for use at Art Unraveled 2017
** This is an unusual year at AU. Unfortunately, none of the sponsors agreed
to sponsor the tote bag fillers this year…. Maybe next year!

AU Tips
Hotel ballrooms and meeting rooms aren’t designed with artists in
mind, they’re designed for weddings and corporate functions
which don’t always meet our needs.
Lighting isn’t optimal! If you’re doing close work, you might
want to bring an Ott light - bring a long extension cord too.
There are lots of mini, portable lites available now in many
forms: headbands, hats, tiny lamps that are battery operated.
Room Temperatures - Layer your clothing so that you can be
comfortable should the temperature be too cold/too hot for you!
Wet wipes - Bring some. It’s much easier to clean hands and
items right at your table rather than run back and forth to the rest
room. The hotel will have a large bucket of water in the classrooms for your workshop use plus an empty bucket for the dirty
water. Please don’t use the bathrooms to empty any dirty water or other solutions.
Supplies to the classroom - Bring them in the smallest container
possible; some meeting rooms just don’t offer enough space
needed for rolling bags or large containers. Save the space for
moving around the room, standing at demo tables, working at
special stations. Please be considerate to your fellow students.
Cell phones and texting - Cell phones must be put on silent and/
or vibrate while in the classroom to avoid noise including any incoming text messages. All calls must be taken outside of the
classroom in an area where no students will be disturbed.
Forget a supply or tool? - No worries.
will be here throughout the event for your
and desires.
Our on-site store
shopping needs
Cleaning rags – Please don’t use the hotel’s towels for cleaning. Bring rags or paper towels. The hotel will assess a charge to
your room bill should towels be soiled by paints, chemicals, etc.

Supply Lists and Packing
Supply lists are included with each workshop description on the
web site. Print or cut and paste the lists for packing and shopping.
Check the TSA web site and your own airline’s regulations before
packing supplies/tools for your flight. TSA site at the time of
printing this booklet; http: TSA.gov; click on Traveler Information.
Using zip lock baggies for items that might leak is a good idea;
it’s not unusual for air pressure changes to cause a leak. I double
bag my items, each item individually.
You can ship your supplies in advance to the hotel but time it so
that the delivery is only a day or two before you arrive - the hotel
has limited storage space and will charge a $5 per box service fee.

Scholarships
Since the first AU, scholarships have silently been given to art-
10
ists who might not otherwise be able to attend. For the past few
years, the Saturday evening live auction has helped to increase the
number of scholarships available. If you know someone you feel
is worthy of receiving a scholarship, the guidelines to apply are
found via a link on the website home page. We don’t publicize
the recipients’ names to protect their privacy.
Art Supply Donations for the Kids
Donate your extra art supplies to a worthy cause.
We’ll have boxes at our check-in tables during the
week. The filled boxes will be donated to Youth
Development Institute, our non-profit charity. YDI
is a residential facility that works with at-risk,
homeless and abused children. Their school has an excellent art
program that we support through the Silent Auction proceeds and
by gathering any art tools/supplies that our attendees might wish
to donate. Through our $ donations, the school’s art department
has been able to purchase 2 Apple computers and has added to
their stash of tools/supplies annually. Check our Yahoo group,
Photos page for an album with pics of the purchases we made
possible.
Trades
Trades are traditional at art retreats. They’re casual, with no set
times or places to trade with one another. Simply create something to trade with other attendees. Trades can be anything that
you wish, most often handmade although items appropriate for
use in mixed media art can be traded as well. Put your trade with
your moo card, business card or small tag including your name
and email address so that recipients know whose creation it is.
Trades can be collected and kept as a remembrance of your time
at Art Unraveled and of the friends you made while here.
We’ll give you a blue star to put on your name tag so that you can
easily spot others who wish to trade. Please don’t be shy - ask
anyone wearing one of our name badges to trade - if they don't
have a trade, you might want to gift them anyway!

Shipping back Home
For convenience, Fed Ex will be on-site, in our check-in area to
assist you with shipping your items home. They will be with us
beginning on Thursday, August 5 th at 4:30 and then each day at
the same time through August 9th. They will have packing materials and boxes should you need them. You can either have them
pack your items or leave your already packed box(es) for them to
ship.
Kit Fees and Shopping
Please be prepared with cash for your kit fees when arriving at
your workshops. Most teachers cannot accept credit cards. Many
of the vendors at the Shopping Extravaganza also do not accept
credit cards; you’ll find an ATM in the hotel’s Business Center
located in the hallway adjacent to our check-in lobby. (room key
card required for entry).
Making the most of your visit to Phoenix
The hotel sits on the Stone Creek Golf Course with the cart path
adjacent to the hotel’s swimming pool. Each day you’ll see people who aren’t golfing using the cart path for walking, running,
bicycle riding, etc. Feel free to use the path if you
wish
although we would suggest that you plan your use
for early
morning to avoid the heat of the day.
During your stay, remember to keep hydrated - drink lots of water, use sunscreen and avoid the hottest parts of the day when going out. Use the complimentary hotel shuttle to explore the nearby areas, they will take you within a 1 mile radius. The eateries
and shopping listed on page 10 are within the shuttle radius.
If you wish to venture further than 1 mile from the hotel but don’t
have a car, there are many limousine services located in the valley. Get together a small group of artists to share the cost of exploring the area.

The Art Unraveled Chicken
By Marcy McKenzie
The Gala Mascot
Where oh where are you?
I am the rubber chicken
I always taken a lickin'
They toss me all around
Who knows where I'll be found?
They hang onto my neck
And throw me...what the heck?!
I fly right through the ballroom sky,
Hope I do not hit someone's eye.
They grab my feet and swing their arm
I wonder when I buy the farm,
Look out old bartender man.....
I may hit you ..or that high fan.
Oh it's so sad my story, my little tale
I've lost my color and look so pale.
Who will come help and rescue me?
Oh, do come soon, I beg of thee.
