Welcome to Bornholm Folk High School
Welcome to Bornholm
Folk High School
At Bornholm Folk High School, emphasis is placed on art, literature and music.
All applicants must be at least 17½ years of age.
The art subjects prepare students for further work in design and at art institutions. The Art Academy’s
Design School on Bornholm is located in Nexø.
Half of the weekly teaching at the school consists of basic general subjects.
Your high school stay is completed in April with a study tour to the ancient university city of Torun in
Poland. Participation in the study tour is of course mandatory with no extra charge.
There is space for displaying skills and peace for absorption and development. Our teachers are well
trained in their subjects, and there is a possibility to receive study and existential guidance.
We have a close and intensive school life, with emphasis on freedom of expression and respect for others.
The workshops are open the entire day.

Glass
Glass is a material, which can be used for artistic expression.
You are introduced to how one blows and forms the warm glass, and how one works with color and different
decoration techniques.
Cold work with glass
Decoration, engraving and sandblasting are some of the cold glass techniques used to decorate
glass. You will learn to saw, cut, polish and sandblast glass in cold conditions and use possibilities
in a sandblaster to give your work finish and a personal expression.
Furnace formed glass (fusing and slumping)
are techniques in which you learn to melt glass together (fusing) and bend glass over forms or melt
glass in forms (slumping) These techniques can be used to produce bowls, platters, jewelry, glass
pictures etc.
Warm glass – Glassblowing and sandblasting
In both the fall and spring, the glass furnace is switched on, and you can try your skill with working
with warm glass. This is a unique chance to get an impression of an old handiwork by experiencing
the intense and warm working conditions, which are so special for glass workshops. You learn how
warm glass is blown and formed and how to work with colors and different decorative techniques.

Ceramics
Fragile and translucent porcelain, so fine and delicate that you can only whisper in its presence.
Rough yellow, red, brown, black bricks that can build huge houses that endure hundreds of years and
hammer an opera toward the sky.
It is amazing what clay can do!
In the ceramic workshop, you will be introduced to the basic techniques of handbuilding, throwing,
working with plastermoulds and slipcasting.
We will work with different types of clay and mix our own glazes. The school has got both an electric
ceramic kiln, a kiln for firing rakuglazes and a wood kiln in which we fire both stoneware and porcelain.
Firing a wood kiln is a very good way of learning about the process from clay to the finished ceramic
object.
The course varies from theory and practical work to regular discussions about aesthetics, design, tradition,
and renewal.
If you find one theme interesting –such as the Japanese tea ceremony or ancient American pottery, etc. or if
for instance, you want to work with clay and a glazes from the island, then it is possible to do this.
The most important thing though, is to have a great time with clay and good company in the workshop.

Art
Are you interested in pictures and visual culture, and want to challenge yourself, your skills and your
performances? If so, the art course of Bornholm Folk High School is for you.
In the subject arts you will be introduced to both traditional techniques, such as drawing, collage and
painting and challenged with modern techniques, such as transferring images via projector, and working
with digital image editing.
You will learn about composition, theory of color and perspective, and much else that will sharpen your
powers of observation and craftsmanship.
We will analyze and discuss the image content, opinion and expression, concept and art appreciation.
We are going to see lots of art, especially modern, and we will challenge our perception of what art is.
Some of the tasks are traditional such. portrait painting and landscape studies. Other tasks are more free,
like. making art installation inside or land art in the surroundings of the school. Photographing known
objects from new angles or themes related to current projects at school or on the current art scene will
inspire your image expression.
It is not a condition of entry that you previously worked with pictures.
The only prerequisite is curiosity and a desire to learn.

Rhythmical ensemble
You will be presented with various styles of song lyrics in both Danish and English. Here you can
participate no matter how much or how little musical knowledge you possess. The work is focused primarily
on playing and practicing different numbers until they swing and sound good. Some music theory can be
studied, and there may be a possibility to listen to and discuss different types of music The school has a
music room with instruments and a public address PA-system in order to satisfactorily cover the needs of the
students to play in groups, both in teaching situations and in their spare time. The school also has the
equipment necessary to make digital recordings with Macbook and Cubase.
Chorus
If there is interest, we will create a chorus. Here the focus is upon experiencing a joy with singing together.
Notice the excitement you get by singing both at the top of your voice or with controlled sentiment, so that
you get goose pimples on your arms. We sing both in unison and in parts.
Music theory and ear training
Here you will get the possibility to work with basic music theory – notes, rhythms, and harmony. If you plan
on applying to a university, conservatory or music school, we will help you improve you possibilities for
