The No Ice or Snow SPRING TOUR.
April 27th 2014. Please join us for an exciting tour.
We will tour the Harbor City of Port Washington with stops at the light house
and living quarters built in 1860, and Coal Park originally used for stocking
coal for the WE Energy plant. Today it is a Veterans park, with a pillar that
is a copy of the WWII Memorial in D.C. located on the harbor. The harbor
should be busy with the hustle and bustle of all kinds of boats being put in
the water.
Joe Demler will be our special VIP guest to greet as we tour Coal Dock Park. He is a friend, fellow
Veteran, WWII POW, and was featured in the Stars & Stripes Honor Flight DVD. He will autograph
the Honor Flight Book published by Stars & Stripes Honor Flight. The Model A member that knows
the right answers to the questions, will receive this beautiful book donated by us.
Depart from McDonalds at Brown Port Center, Hwy 100 & North Port Washington Rd.

Sharon Model "A" Day - Sunday 1 June 2014
Every year on the first Sunday in June, the spirit of
the 1920’s and 1930’s is brought to life in the small
town of Sharon, WI (pop. 1600) as Model A’s line the
main street, and people dressed as gangsters and
flappers from the period promenade in front of the
well preserved facades of local businesses, displaying architecture of a different time. With these historic buildings, The Model A’s and people in period attire
look quite at home. Model A Day is one of several
events put forth by the Historic Downtown Sharon Association to boost awareness of the history that
surrounds us and to get in touch with our past. The illusion of stepping back in time is aided by costumed residents of the town, time-period entertainments, and of course, those delicious foods we
have been eating for as long as we can remember.
We look forward to seeing you on June 1st, 2014 for the “annual run to
Sharon”. Watch for the tour details in next month's WHEELING THE 'A'.

Saturday, June 14th Flag Day Tour
WI Chapter members, military, patriots, and friends, deck your “A” with American flags
as we parade at the birth place of National Flag Day.
The theme for this year is the birth of the United States army on June 14th,1775.
Waubeka is small town that comes alive on Flag Day. We will be one of over 100 floats,
bands, American Legion Posts, and VFW Posts to make up this festive parade.

Things you auto know….
1. Waukesha Preservation Alliance will be having their annual event which focuses on Waukesha’s colorful past. They are looking for period cars from 1900 to early 1950s which will help participants understand the role the automobile played in our past. The gathering will be held May 17th, close to the
famous five points in downtown Waukesha. Meeting at 9:00 a.m. and the event continues until 3:00
p.m. As usual there will be donuts and orange juice to start the day and snacks throughout the afternoon. If you can attend you will not be expected to stay the entire day. There will be several tours
and other events.
2. The Harry Miller Club will be holding the Vintage Indy Car event on July 11-12 at the famed Milwaukee Mile racetrack. The Miller event is one of the most impressive U.S. gatherings of Pre-W.W. II
and Post- W.W. II Indy cars, Indy roadsters and laydowns. Gates open at 8:00 a.m. on Friday and
Saturday with cars running the oval track from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
3. 1st Congregational Church 3rd Annual Car Show. Saturday, August 9th, 2014. 10:30 a.m. to 4:00
p.m., 1st Congregational Church of Genesee, W306 S5075 Church St., Genesee, WI. $8 donation
per car, huge raffle @ 3:30 p.m. Live music, brats, hot dogs, sweet corn, and beverages, Dash
plaques to the first 100 cars."

President’s Notes
Hello everyone,
I hope by the time you are reading this spring will be making its appearance. I would like
to give a big thank you to all the members that have once again stepped forward to fill in
our club’s events calendar. It looks like another great year of fun Model A events. Join us
for the spring tour on April 27th when the Larsons take us on a tour to Port Washington to see some interesting things. In May the Olsens and Gapkos will be taking us touring on some Walworth and Racine County
roads. That tour will end at Camp MacLean in Burlington.
I have started the yearly check up on our cars to make sure they are ready for the season, so far no surprises. I hope we are in for a relatively trouble free season. Saturday, April 26th our technical volunteers will
have a seminar on getting your cars ready for touring. So if you need to get your car ready join in on the seminar.
Thank you to all club members who worked the 2014 swap meet. It was a great success! Door sales
reached 2,044 people and the club profited well. Without the help of club members we would not be able to
carry out this successful event.
This is just a reminder for all members that all indoor meets/events during our winter months are at St. Aloysius church on 92nd and Greenfield in West Allis. I know all us old timers know that but I want to let our newer
members know because sometimes we forget to put it in the newsletter and it can be confusing if you are
new to the club. As for the spring through fall outdoor events please see the newsletter as the starting place
changes with each event.

‘A’ Trip Back to April 1966

The first tour of the season for 1996 took place in April and included a tour of the Brooks Stevens Museum on
North Port Washington road. It was a cold, damp, overcast day as we met in the parking lot of Capitol Court
shopping center (remember Capitol Court and the Kookie Cookie House? It was all torn down in 2001 and
now the Midtown Center stands in its place). The museum was enjoyed by all and it was pouring out by the
time we left. The day ended with a stop at Howard Johnson’s (another memory of the past with their bright orange roof) for food and fellowship.
April 23rd, another cold gloomy day saw 9 members of the club and their ‘A’s as well as 8 members from the ‘T’
club and various other Fords in a parade for the grand opening of Northwestern Ford (another bygone
memory). The grand opening was a big event in Milwaukee. The parade started with Mr. Snetcamp’s (owner of
Northwestern Ford) 1910 Model T and Miss Wisconsin riding alongside him. There were eight T’s followed by
Larry Koser - ’31 roadster, Don Ramstack - ’31 Fordor, Jack Graham - ’31 Woody, Art Sternhagen - ’32 V8,
Francis Drake - ’29 Fordor, Don Ackermann - ’28 Fordor, Fred Fischer - ’31 Cabriolet, Chuck Hickling in a
roadster, and the daughter of Mel Degner in a ’29 Tudor. The parade wound its way thru Whitefish Bay before
returning to the dealership. The dealership treated everyone to food at Howard Johnson’s.
New members who joined the club – William D’Agostino of Chicago, Brian Adam of West Allis (Brian manages
a Dutchland Dairy – they’re long gone too, but had great malts and the waitresses all wore ‘dutch’ uniforms
with the little white dutch hats), Robert & Shirley Henke of Beaver Dam, Ron & Lois Knies of Milwaukee, and
Carroll & Wyona Lindsey of Milwaukee.
Demo Staver and Art Sternhagen are to meet with Clark Oil officials to see if arrangements can be made for
free gas and oil for the trip to Albuerqueque. (note spelling is theirs, not mine) Grace Koser and Betty Campbell have mapped out the route and stops for the trip. Larry Koser and Wes have compiled a list of parts
(courtesy of B.S. Wisniewski – also a relic of the past) to be taken on the trip. A Ford Econoline van (courtesy
of the Ford Motor Company) will carry the parts. Thus far 25 cars have shown an interest in making the trip.
Some members and their cars will be on television on the ‘Men’s Club’, WTMJ on May 22.
Also May 22 our chapter will host an all Ford car show. This meet is for all years, from ‘T’s to ‘A’s to ‘B’s to
V8’s. Trophies, plaques and ribbons will be awarded. Volunteers to help with the event are needed.
Lastly, Carl Olsen had announced his retirement from bachelorhood and on May 21st will bravely take the leap
of faith with Kathy Lorenzini.

MAFCA Wisconsin Chapter General Meeting Minutes
March 9, 2014
Board Members Present: Mike Quam, Steve Lewis, Dave Boucher, Dave
Huenink, Paul Piotrowski, Neil Besougloff
Mike Quam called the meeting to order at 1:32 p.m.
President –Mike Q. – Mike thanked everyone for coming and asked if there were any new members present.
We received the reciprocating newsletters. We also received a thank you note from MAFFI for our pledged
donation of $500.00 as well as a thank you from the Model A Youth Restoration Award group for our donation
of $200.00. We received an invitation to attend the national meet in Washington and the annual Model A
Day’s in Sharon WI. The board of directors also decided to contribute $100.00 towards the National Model A
event to be used as a door prize.
Vice President – Steve L. – We received 2 applications for new members. One from Glenn Becker and Dan
Miller.
Secretary – Dave H. – There were no corrections or changes to the minutes from the February 9th, 2014
general meeting. A motion was made by Stan Larson and seconded by Bob Schmiechen to accept the
minutes as written. The motion was put to a vote and it carried. Two hundred and forty five members have
renewed their membership.
Treasurer – Paul P. – A report of the revenue and expenses from last month were given. No revenue or expenses were turned in. The swap meet was a great success, big thank you to all who made it a success. We
received a lot of positive feedback from those who attended and the vendors.
Outdoor – Neil B. – The outdoor events for 2014 were reviewed and it was mentioned all but one of the
events for this year has hosts. The Franklin 4th of July parade still is in need of a host.
Indoor – Dave B. – A martial arts demonstration will be held at today’s indoor meet which will be our last
until November 2014. Meyers Restaurant has been reserved for next year’s banquet on January 24th 2015.
A request went out to the membership for hosts for the 2015 banquet.
Old Business – A motion was made by Stan Larson to make the changes to our by-laws posted in “Wheeling
the A”. It was seconded by Roger Olsen. The motion was put to a vote by the membership and the motion
carried.
Dave Huenink made a motion to adjourn the meeting and it was seconded by Karen Schmiechen. The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 p.m.

Milwaukee Auto Show
Thanks to Ford Motor Co. our club was invited into the
Milwaukee auto show on Feb. 21st for an exclusive
sneak peek at the all-new 2015 Ford F-150. Though it
was a last minute invite and we tried to contact as
many members as we could via email, my son and I
were the only ones available to go. We saw a great new
vehicle with a lot of new and exciting features. It was a
fun filled morning with the opportunity to see the new
cars before the general public. Along with the new F150 I was excited to see the all-new 2015 Ford
Mustang another big hit coming from Ford. Thanks again
Ford and I hope we can do it again next year.

Technical Seminar
Thursday, February 20, 2014
More than a dozen and a half men came to our technical seminar at Mail Truck on a wickedly cold
and blustery Wisconsin winter evening.
We made the final adjustments on the brake system and made sure all the pins were tight and working together so the brakes will work 100%. A couple of pins were reamed for oversize pins so they
would have close tolerance and no free play. Now all four wheels are working and our vehicle will
stop on a dime.
We talked about the Nu-Rex Advance Timing System. You will not have to manually use the spark
advance lever on your steering wheel once you install the kit. The Nu-Rex will do the work automatically. The object of this system is easier operation and more efficiency as well as a smoother running Model A motor.
The head gasket was installed on the head and the torque was done in the correct sequence. The
side cover was removed from the motor. We then used a taper punch to widen the hole so the advance timing would move freely after we torque the head. The Nu-Rex Company recommended doing this so the shaft would not drag.
The engine was turned over to get the timing mark top dead center so we could set the timing. If all
continues to go well, we plan to start the engine at our March seminar.

49th Annual Swap Meet
With 116 vendors and 2,044 people coming thru the front door I would have to call this year’s swap meet a
success. I couldn’t be happier with our first year as a newly formed swap committee. I felt things went very
smoothly, only a few minor snafu’s, though we had big shoes to fill we did a great job. Thank you to; Dave &
Donna Boucher for all the advertising work and various other duties they did, to Bob & Kitty Schaefer for their
work getting volunteers signed up and in place, to Pat & Paul Piotrowski for taking care of all front door monetary/banking needs. Mike & I took care of reservations, assigning vendors and running each building the
morning of the show.
This year you may have noticed we had a sheriff deputy in the ticket booth area. The cashiers had expressed concern about the amount of money flowing thru there and asked for security. As luck would have
it, we needed the deputy’s prompt service when long time club member Bill Scaffidi stumbled on a raise in
the concrete outside the side door and fell. The deputy called EMS and they came to assess Bill. Two black
eyes and 5 stitches later Bill is doing well.
I must commend all our volunteers for a job well done! I witnessed the work of many and was impressed with

Martial Arts Sunday
After a short business meeting we were treated to a
demonstration of Kung Fu and Tai Chi. Our presenters
were Sifu Scott Muelling of Iron Dragon Kung Fu Academy of Waukesha and Grand Master Glen C. Wilson of
the White Dragon Society in Florida. Combined they
have over 70 years of experience in Kung Fu and Tai
Chi. Sifu Muelling has achieved his 3rd degree black
belt and Grand Master Wilson holds a 10th degree
black belt.
Together they gave us a demonstration of Kung Fu an ancient form of martial arts and Tai Chi practiced for both its defense training and health benefits. There were a lot of demonstrations and questions and answers. From the feedback I heard everyone enjoyed it.
This was our last indoor meet until November when we come back for our annual pizza party. If the
weather ever cooperates we can enjoy our outdoor season.

St Patrick’s Day Parade 2014
The luck of the Irish held out weather wise on Saturday March 15th. We had a bright sunny, cool dry
day.
We started as usual with breakfast at Miss Katie’s Diner then, onto the parade line up. After decorating the car, it was time to sit back and watch the other groups arrive. We were among dancers,
dogs and even a pedal bar.
The crowd this year was very large. The sides of the streets were lined with a multitude of adults
and lots of kids. As expected the bar areas were the most crowded.
All in all Donna and I had another nice day of Model A-ing. Thanks’ to the Wisconsin Chapter for
giving us this opportunity. We even got to see St. Patrick.

To receive the newsletter and the roster via the US Mail (first class)
the dues are $30.00 New member applications are approved at the
monthly Board of Directors meeting, which is the second
Saturday of the month. You will receive a welcome letter upon
approval. Dues include membership only in the
Wis. Chapter MAFCA until the end of the current calendar year.
