The Guardian By Tuesday 27 May 7.45 pm £18.00 (£16.00) £6.50 (£5.50) £6.50 (£5.50) Celebrating the incredible musical legacy of Karen Carpenter with well-loved tunes such as Yesterday Once More, Close to You, Top of the World, Jambalaya and perhaps The Carpenter’s most poignant songs on their last album, Voice of the Heart. With superb vocals from Carol Gordon and the outstanding talents of the Blue Jeans Band & Singers, this promises to be a sparkling night to remember. New York socialite, Jasmine (Cate Blanchett), arrives in San Francisco utterly ruined. As old pretensions and new deceits begin to emerge, she fouls up everyone’s lives, including her own. Blanchett’s multi-award-winning portrayal of Jasmine is mesmerising and Woody Allen’s screen drama has been billed as his best in two decades. Bafta nominated, Saving Mr Banks is inspired by the extraordinary untold backstory of how ‘Mary Poppins’ made it to the big screen. After a 20 year struggle to obtain the rights from the book’s author (Emma Thompson), Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) pulls out all the stops and together they set Mary Poppins free to make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.
