Minnesota Ironman Bicycle
Ride, Sunday April 24
Hello TCBC friends! We are well into
our plans for the 2016 Minnesota
Ironman Bicycle Ride. As usual, it’s the
last Sunday in April…so mark your
calendar for 4/24/16. This is truly a
monumental year, our 50th
anniversary.
Over 100,000 riders have experienced
the thrills, spills and chills of this
grand event. We hope you will
consider joining us for 2016.
We opened registration on February
1st. Washington County and the communities of Scandia, Stillwater, Afton,
Lake Elmo, Marine on the St Croix,
and Oak Park Heights are home for
this annual adventure. Loops of 60,
30, and 15 miles are mapped and may
be combined for longer distances.
TCBC knows these roads well.

EFFECTIVE BICYCLING
AND RECREATIONAL
BICYCLE RIDES
I think everyone knows that weather
plays a huge role in this early season
event. The past few years have given
us the “best of” and the “worst of”
for riding conditions. We simply
appreciate the support from TCBC
riders who make this ride a yearly
tradition, in spite of the weather.
We welcome you as either a rider or
a volunteer. Our partnership with
TCBC goes back to the club’s
beginning when TCBC was part of
Hostelling International. We need
200 volunteers to pull this ride off.
Many volunteer on Saturday and ride
with us on Sunday as well. Sign up
with a friend and join in the
experience.

PRESIDENT'S COLUMN
THIS MONTH WE RECOGNIZE:
A big thank you to the
Awards Banquet Committee:
Ann Harris, Linda Johnson, Kasey Kramer,
Mike Kubes, Mary Miller, Fran Rabe,
Donna Sanders, Evie Walters, Diane Ziemer,
Steve Scott, Patt Seleen, and Doug Nelson
It was a new place for us and turned out to be a great venue for it.
There is quite a bit of work that goes into putting this on and the
committee deserves a big hand.
2015 Volunteers of the Year Award:
Pete Hawkins
Pete skillfully handled the American Insurance Specialty Claims
that the club was faced with for the tragic events of both Rick
Shoebottom and Bob Prudhomme. Pete handled these tasks with
sensitivity and skill, relieving the pressure of these duties from the
Club President and Board. In addition to handling our club’s
insurance, Pete continue to put in many volunteer hours relating to
New Ride Leader Training each year. He developed a new training
model; train the trainer, which allows multiple sessions to be held,
thus allowing more leaders the option of participating in the
training. His expertise on handling various situations as a Ride
Leader Liaison is always handled with tact and thoughtfulness.
Pete attends most board meetings and his experience helps the
board with tough decisions when necessary. (Pete has won this
award previously and has volunteered in many other ways,
including serving as President and Vice-President.)
Roger Fickbohm
Roger has nicely handled the treasurer duties since 2011. During
this time he has improved and modernized our overall accounting
processes, club financial record retention, and has simplified the
budgeting process for the club. These improvements have allowed
the club to continue to operate as financially prudently as possible.
In addition, he has established and implemented a process
whereby an independent individual serves as a financial auditor of
the club’s finances. Roger provides an in- depth current status of
finances at each board meeting. Finally, Roger has also served as a
ride leader for numerous years.
There are many of you out there that deserve some recognition.
So if you know of someone that you would like to recognize, please
send an e-mail to [email protected]. Please tell us who
and why you think they deserve recognition.

FRAN RABE
For those of you who were able to
attend the January 30th Awards
Banquet, I hope you enjoyed the new
venue. This location, the Crystal Lake
Golf and Banquet Center, provided a
nice banquet room at considerable
financial savings to the club over
previous locations. We had a fine
turnout with 136 registered
attendees and four sponsors with
display tables. The traditional
awards for ride leaders and key
volunteers were dispersed and many
attendees won raffle gifts provided
by our sponsors and proprietors. Did
you win one?
In March, the Board of Directors will
convene for a strategic planning
meeting. We plan to review
membership statistics and club
associated data/information and
establish short-term and long-term
goals for the club. While the club
remains strong and financially
healthy, we want to ensure that this
remains true in 2016 and for years to
come. We also want to ensure we
provide enjoyable and safe rides for
all levels of our riders.
Last year 144 of our 197 trained ride
leaders led 4 rides or more. Twenty
of our most active leaders led 41% of
the total rides. That is an astounding
number. Just think how many more
rides we could have available for our
membership if a larger portion of our
ride leaders led additional rides! If
you are not yet a ride leader, at the
printing of this newsletter, there
remain openings for the two
remaining ride leader sessions.
Please consider contributing to your
fellow TCBC members by becoming a
ride leader.
Several of our most hardy ride
leaders have been leading rides
during our winter months, while the
rest of us sip our coffee by the
fireplace. Other leaders are visiting
Texas, Arizona, and California and are
leading TCBC rides for those willing to
travel to those locations. I plan on
checking on 3-4 Arizona rides this
spring to see what that is all about. I
can’t wait! Will you be there as well?

Getting Ready for Spring Cycling
During this winter, I know that many
of us have not been on our bikes
since this past October or November,
and we probably won’t think about
riding outside until April. In order to
get ready for spring riding, it would
be a good idea to start getting into
shape now. The best way to do that is
to get on a bike trainer and set a
riding schedule where you are on the
bike for at least an hour several times
a week until April. If you do not have
a trainer or cannot stand riding at
home, go to a fitness center, a YMCA,
YWCA, or a small fitness studio that
has spinning machines. The following
is a partial list of these businesses.
YMCA, EDINA, 7355 York Ave, 952835-2567, ymcatwincities.org
YMCA, MINNEAPOLIS, 30 S. 9th
St., 612-371-8746, ymcatwincities.org

thefirmmpls.com
BALANCE FITNESS STUDIO,
MINNEAPOLIS, 2902 Garfield Ave.,
South, 612-720-2121, balancempls.
com This studio does not have
spinning machines but you can bring
your own bike and ride on
computrainer equipment.
These businesses charge differently.
Some require a membership, some
charge by the class, and some charge
by the hour. If you are looking for
something closer to your home,
Google “spinning” or “ymca” or “ywca”.
A rider who is physically prepared to
begin riding in April will be a better
rider and a safer rider.

2016 RECOGNITION BANQUET RECAP
WE ALL LIKED THE NEW VENUE AT CRYSTAL LAKE GOLF CLUB IN LAKEVILLE - COZY WITH A BAR! THANKS TO EVIE WALTERS
Recognition Banquet Recap
Didn't you come to the “awards banquet”? You missed it! The Crystal
Lake Golf Club in Lakeville was an
awesome venue. Two walls facing the
golf course were solid windows so the
view was exquisite. Early birds definitely got the worm. Additionally, the
dining room was carpeted with a
soundproofing substance ceiling, allowing lots of exchange of bike tales. After not seeing one another for a few
months, we are a deafening crowd. The food was marvelous as well. We
had a salad, a mixed medley of crisp,
tender vegetables, some mashed
potatoes that I'm not sure how they
spiced – maybe horseradish and
garlic? Finally, we had pork roast
and/or chicken breasts, breaded and

doused with cheese sauce. It was a
bit fattening for my diet, but it was
delicious.
Fran Rabe kept the awards flowing so
it wasn't a time-consuming process. Doug Nelson emceed and showered
us with statistics. Many sponsors and
proprietors blessed us with very
generous gifts that each attending
registrant had the option to win
during the numerous raffle drawings. I'm not going to include all of the
mileage winners, but the 1st place
trophy winners were first-time
champ Catherine Fox for the women
and Richard Miller (as usual) for the
men. Many ride leaders and
volunteers were thanked during the
program. After all, that was the
theme of the event!
great review of the highlights of rides
throughout the year. The theme of “THANK YOU” to all of
our sponsors, significant volunteers,
and ride leaders was really swell and
much appreciated by all. Most of all,
we enjoyed seeing one another and
had a great time. Our only regret was
that some of our friends weren't
there and we didn't get to talk to
each of the people we wanted to who
did make it. We sure are a goodlooking bunch when we get all
dressed up and smile our cheeks to
cramping. “Blessed be the tie that
binds [our bikes] our hearts in
kindred love.” by Mary C Miller
(The very deserving two Volunteer of
the Year winners are profiled in the
Recognition Corner.) We had our usual Powerpoint series
of pictures that Gina McCrone and
Diane Ziemer put together. They ran

IRONMAN VOLUNTEERS
We are excited to announce that the
50th Minnesota IRONMAN Bike Ride
is Sunday, April 24, in the Scenic St.
Croix River Valley! The IRONMAN
postcards have hit the mail and we’re
preparing for another great ride.
Soon the snow and cold will be a
distant memory and cyclists will be
gearing up for the unofficial
beginning of spring – The Minnesota
IRONMAN Bike Ride!
The IRONMAN Committee is working
hard to bring the 50th IRONMAN ride
to the Stillwater area, but they can’t
do it without you! Whether you’re a
LEAH FOGELBERG

IRONMAN #50
cyclist yourself or someone who
wants to see this great ride in action,
volunteering is an incredible way to
experience this unique event. If you
are a returning volunteer, share the
fun by recruiting friends, family, and
coworkers. If you are new to the
IRONMAN, welcome aboard!
Volunteering for the IRONMAN also
makes a great service project for
church groups, scout troops, clubs,
offices, and families! We know life is
busy, so we have shifts that range
from all day to a few hours in a
variety of areas -- registration, rest
stops, railroad track safety, first aid,
ride marshal, ham radio operator and
merchandise sales. Are you an
experienced sag van driver? We need
your help with van pick up, driving
during the ride, and drop off after.
Visit Ironmanbikeride.org for a full
list of volunteer opportunities. Some
volunteer opportunities are before
the ride so you can help and ride the
IRONMAN too!
You can register to volunteer at www.
ironmanbikeride.org or please
contact me with any questions at
[email protected] and
I’ll find a good spot for you. Thanks
for joining us!

INCENTIVES TO PEDAL FASTER
and started singing - it was bound to
scare any living thing away. On my
way home, still singing, I encountered a fellow biker and warned him
about the alligator. He informed me
that he had a bell to scare them
away. That sounded a lot cheaper
than voice lessons!
LAST JUNE, I was out enjoying
another hot and humid Florida day on
my new Motobecane road bike. I like
to ride the Cape Haze Pioneer Trail,
just a couple miles from our home in
the Rotonda West area. Bike-friendly
streets lead up to the trail, which goes
out to the Boca Grande Causeway.
Being that it was summer, the trail
was pretty quiet, with all the winter
Floridians back home for the season. I was about five miles into my 14-mile
ride, cruising along, sun on my face,
wind in my hair. All of a sudden,
about 50 feet ahead, there was a 7-8
foot alligator covering half the trail!

YUMM - BIKERS - CRUNCHY ON THE OUTSIDE SOFT IN THE MIDDLE
Gator Encounter on a Bike
See, one of the beautiful parts of this
path is that it is right between two
freshwater sources - two alligatorinfested water sources, apparently.
Of course, in Florida, this can't
surprise you. Well, it surprised the
heck out of me! My new scaly friend and I both
stopped in our tracks; it seems I
surprised him as well. We locked
eyes, both of us pondering our next
move. My heart was pounding, and
MAR/APR 2016 TC BC N EWS
my mind was reeling, coming up with
possible solutions. I reasoned that
the activity of the winter months and
all the noise surrounding the trail had
kept them away, hence why this
hadn't happened to me before.
Before I could make a move, the
alligator turned and headed back to
the water on the side of the trail. Once the coast was clear, I decided
to go with my noise theory, and
make some! I got back in the saddle,
When I got home, I googled how fast
an alligator can be. I learned that an
alligator could move at 7-8 mph in
spurts. I was averaging 14 mph on
my bike, so I was happy to know I
could outsprint him if motivated and I was! I also learned through
talking to a neighbor that it was
mating season, so these guys were
moving around a bit more.
And finally, the bell. I was in
Anchorage, Alaska, a couple of weeks
later. While I was shopping, I came
across a bell you attach to your
backpack to scare moose and bears
away while hiking. Ah ha. I now have
that bell attached to my bike in
Florida. It is my Bear/Moose/Alligator
Bell. I always have a little ringing
going on while riding my bike in
Florida now.

TCBC SPONSOR SERIES
NEW SHOP ON QUEEN AVE SO IN RICHFIELD
Positive Pedals
Interview with
Rich Meredyk: owner of
Positive Pedals Bike Shop
Positive Pedals Bike Shop became a
Steel level annual sponsor in
November 2015, five months after it
opened its doors at 6603 Queen Ave
S., Richfield, 55423, in May, 2015.
Owner Rich Meredyk says his desire
to support group riding was a big
reason he was drawn to become a
sponsor of TCBC. Since becoming a
sponsor, he subsequently teamed up
with Randall Huskamp, a well-known
TCBC bike leader, to lead TCBC rides
from his shop, in addition to
supporting a racing team named
Midtown Cycling. (The phone is 612806-1113, and the website is
positivepedalsbikes.com.)
Rich says his mom would say he
started riding as he was growing up in
Bloomington at the age of 2 ½, when
he got on a bike way too big for him
and managed to ride off into the
sunset on his own. The biking fever hit
him hard in 1995, when he got a
mountain bike and took a bike trip to
Moab, Utah. Over the years he
started working at bike shops to get
the discounts, and got into road
biking to become a better mountain
biker. When he quit working at bike
shops to sell cars for Westside
Volkswagon, he built bicycle wheels
for friends out of his home basement,
which grew into a steady part-time
income. Then in late fall 2014, he was
installing a light bulb in his garage/
bike maintenance shop, and fell off
the ladder onto the back of a bike
wheel. While he was convalescing at
home on short-term disability, he says
he felt directed to opening up a bike
shop -- and never went back to selling
cars, but instead opened Positive
Pedals on a wing and a prayer.
Though Rich’s first love is mountain
biking, that is now taking a back seat
RICHARD MEREDYK
to road biking. He likes hills and loves
to climb and challenge himself. One
of his recent favorite bike rides was
out of Grand Marais, north of the
Canadian border. He found it by
asking the owner of a bike shop in
Grand Marais to suggest a great ride,
and that turned out to be a 77-mile
route, which was all paved,
sometimes mountainous, and had no
traffic. Rich says the scenery and the
people he met on the ride made him
feel like he was biking in Europe. Rich convinced me during the
interview to clean my bike after every
ride, pump up my tires before every
ride, and bring my bike in from my
garage to my home this winter, out of
the dust and changing temperatures
that can be harsh on metal. This may
seem rather extreme to some of you
(it did to me), but Rich says it’s
imperative if you want to keep your
bike in good working order, keep
maintenance costs lower, and extend
the life of your bike.
The name Positive Pedals says it all
for Rich. He wants to continue to
transmit to people his love of biking,
hoping every customer leaves the
shop excited to ride. He wants to
make sure customers will not feel
intimidated about asking questions
since no question is a dumb question.
There is no time limit put on time
spent with customers or working on
their bike to make it right. When
asked at the end of the interview
whether there was anything else he’d
like TCBC members to know about
him or Positive Pedals, Rich said
without his strong faith in God,
Positive Pedals would not exist -- and
as important as Positive Pedals and
its customers have become to him,
his faith and how that directs his life
continues to be his number one
priority as he works hard to be a
successful bike shop entrepreneur.
One might say, especially us cyclists,
that could be a match made in
heaven. by Ginny Halloran

TCBC NEW RIDE LEADER TRAINING
within the moderate constraints of
our rules and guidelines, lead the
kind of rides that you want, to locations and at times you would like to
have them. You will then have a hand
in shaping the character of TCBC.
For 2016, we will continue using the
new format for TCBC New Ride Leader Training that was adopted last
year. We will have a total of up to
four small groups, with approximately four-hour classes offered throughout the winter and there will no longer be any cost to participants. The
dates and registration details are
posted on the TCBC Website and will
be updated as needed. The next class
is scheduled for Sunday, February
28th and there is one after that on
Saturday, March 11th. At least one
more class will be offered in late
March or early April depending on
the demand. New leaders will also
be required to attend the TCBC Ride
Leader Forum scheduled for Monday
evening, April 11.

New Leader
Training
It has often been said that our ride
leaders are the lifeblood of our club.
Although it takes many dedicated
volunteers to operate the internal
structure of TCBC, it is truly the ride
leaders who make TCBC successful.
They are its public face and the ones
who determine to a great extent
what kind of bike club it is. So by
becoming a TCBC ride leader you can,

-DAVID ARTHUR

To qualify, we ask that you have been
an active TCBC member for at least
one year, that you agree to follow the
rules and guidelines of our club, and
that you are fully accessible through
email, telephone, and the U.S. Postal
Service. Also, that you have a true
desire to help make TCBC a
welcoming organization that’s
focused on sharing the joys of
bicycling with others and promoting
safe and responsible riding. Our
leader training is specifically designed
for TCBC and is not in any way a
general leadership course.
Participants will learn about the
structure of TCBC, its communication
systems, its rules and guidelines, and
how to schedule and lead a TCBC ride.
I think that most of our present and
past ride leaders would agree that
assuming the role of TCBC ride leader
has been a rewarding experience for
them. It’s a role that offers
opportunity for growth in many
ways. I hope you will give becoming
one of our ride leaders your
thoughtful consideration.

it was defeated by a strong majority
of the local advisory group, for safety

The paths will continue to be more

TRAIL COUNTS: The Parks and Trails
Council had 82 volunteers count state
trail users at 25 different locations
during last September and October.
Using the data, they extrapolated to
estimate that each of the 25 locations
is used roughly 67,000 times per
summer. The busiest sampled, of
course, was the Gateway Trail near
the Browns’ Creek junction -- over
200,000! The majority of state trail
are bicyclists -- 61%, with 25% being
walkers and 11% joggers. And 88% of
the users were over 18 years old.

BIKE U UPCOMING EVENT
For Thinkers Only
Bike U Recap
January Event Major Taylor
(Required reading for Bike U)
It is not unique to TCBC that our
average age is increasing. Our form
of riding seems to be a Baby Boomer
thing, and the days when we were
Boomer Babies are becoming more
long-ago than they once were. I think
we try, but we are not attracting as
many younger riders into our club as
would be good for the continued
vitality of our club. In this regard, I
believe the “our club” approach
might be part of the problem.
We have a fantastic club for people in
our age range who like to do what we
like to do, but as to younger riders,
they are probably looking for
something more of their own, just like
we once were. I have not forgotten
my younger days or the ulterior
motives with which I rode. Neither
have I forgotten chasing the 26-yearold beauty who became my wife.
It occurs to me that we should be
trying to find out what younger riders
want and looking into whether we
could facilitate that, rather than trying
to show them how much fun we can
be for them when we do what we like
to do, in our own way, while proving
that some of us can drop them.
So where and how can younger riders
be contacted for input? I am going to
look into that. Ideas are welcome.
