We are a non-alumni philanthropic support group for Brandeis University, America’s only Jewish-sponsored nonsectarian university. With the chapter’s fund-raising and educational activities throughout the year, we enable our members to connect with each other, the university, and the community as we support this fine school. Funds raised this year may be designated for an endowed scholarship with preference for a student from the Tucson area who has been accepted to Brandeis University and qualifies for financial assistance or another Brandeis project. Your participation will help us reach our goals. Many thanks to Study Group Team members who put together an exciting array of Study Group courses to spark your interest. They have worked hard to enrich your selection. Courses were created by our members or community guest educators. We hope you will find many opportunities within this booklet for your personal growth and a chance to make new friends and interact with others. You will have many opportunities this year to enjoy your relationship with Tucson chapter of Brandeis. Please consider joining us at our open board meetings, working with us in collecting and selling used books, contributing to our community service program, and attending entertaining functions designed for your enjoyment. It is named for Louis Dembitz Brandeis (1856–1941), the distinguished Supreme Court Associate Justice. The university, nonsectarian and sponsored by the American Jewish community, has about 4,400 undergraduate and graduate students. Brandeis has been ranked sixth in the nation in the biological sciences and has the most comprehensive program of Judaic studies outside the State of Israel and America’s first Israel Studies program. Brandeis today enrolls a diverse student body drawn from 47 states and 103 countries. The student to faculty ratio is 8:1. The Brandeis National Committee was founded to provide philanthropic support and growth for the university and its libraries. Since 1948, its members have contributed over one hundred million dollars to build and sustain four libraries on the Brandeis campus. In 1998, the millionth book was placed on the shelves and two and one-half million dollars was raised to establish an endowed Brandeis University Librarian’s Chair. Membership in the BNC offers opportunities for intellectual pursuit, continuing education, local community service, social interaction, personal enrichment, and leadership development. Today, the committee has reaffirmed its commitment to the libraries and added its support to other facets of the university through activities that reflect the values on which the university was founded, our four pillars: academic excellence, social justice, nonsectarianism, and service to the community. 3 ARE YOUR BOOKSHELVES FULL? In addition, many people think about their commitment to their favorite charities and want to continue to support causes they care about, even when forced to live on a fixed income. Many individuals have used gift annuities to accomplish both income and philanthropic goals. A charitable gift annuity is part investment and part gift. It can be an excellent option for donors who want to secure their own financial stability while ensuring some level of support for charities of their choice. An annuity can be particularly attractive to the donor who wants to receive income from assets that have risen sharply in value, such as stocks. A charitable gift annuity can provide: ♦ supplemental income payments for your lifetime (and the lifetime of your spouse); ♦ significant tax breaks at the time of the gift and every year thereafter; ♦ support for Brandeis University for generations to come. In basic terms, a charitable gift annuity is a legal contract under which an individual, in exchange for his or her gift to a qualified charity, will receive fixed payments for life. The charity, or “payor,” uses the interest and part of the principal to make the payments to the individual, or “annuitant.” For further information on how you can help yourself while helping Brandeis University, contact Michael Swartz ’71, Associate Vice-president for Gift Planning, Development and Alumni Relations, Mailstop 012, Waltham, MA 02454-9110, phone 1-781-736-4057, e-mail Swartz@ brandeis.edu. 39 JEWISH HOLIDAYS 5771 2010 Rosh Hashanah September 9 & 10 Kol Nidre September 17 Yom Kippur September 18 First Two Days Sukkot September 23 & 24 Shemini Atzeret September 30 Simchat Torah October 1 Hanukkah December 2 to 9 2011 Tu B’Shevat Purim First Two Days Passover Last Two Days Passover Yom HaShoah Yom HaZikaron Yom HaAtzma’ut Lag B’Omer Yom Yerushalayim Shavuot Tisha B’Av Rosh Hashanah Kol Nidre Yom Kippur First Two Days Sukkot Shemini Atzeret Simchat Torah Hanukkah January 20 March 20 April 19 & 20 April 25 & 26 May 1 May 8 May 9 May 22 June 1 June 8 & 9 August 9 September 29 & 30 October 7 October 8 October 13 & 14 October 20 October 21 December 21 – 28 (Except for Kol Nidre, Jewish holidays start the evening before the date given.) 40 lifelong learning, lifelong friendships Study Groups Because you are a BNC member, you are privileged to study with the best.
