THE 13TH ANNUAL XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP . . . .
The XTERRA World Championship is the final stop on the
XTERRA Global Tour - a national and international series of
100+ qualifying events held in Australia, Austria, Brazil,
Czech Republic, France, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Saipan,
South Africa, United Kingdom, and United States.
The course, considered XTERRA’s toughest, consists of a
1.5-kilometer rough water swim, a grueling 32km mountain
bike on the lower slopes of Haleakala, and a 12km trail run.
The field is limited to 550 competitors, including 80 pros,
who represent the best off-road multisport athletes on the
planet. They come from more than 20 countries & compete
for one of the richest purses in multisport at $130,000.
The award-winning TEAM TV crew will be on location to televise all the action for a one-hour sports special that will air
across the U.S. via national syndication starting in January of
2009.

race, the pros competing in it, and XTERRA in general. Below are additional items of interest:
- The XTERRA pressroom is located in the Ilima Room (#113) on the lobby level of the Maui Prince Hotel.
- For credentials contact Trey Garman at 808-216-8606 or stop by the Ilima Room.
- TEAM Unlimited will record full race results and distribute after the event.
- During the championship race TEAM Unlimited will escort interested press members to key strategic
locations throughout the course to track leaders and course happenings, and to get the best possible
photos. You must reserve your seat in the press van in advance.
- A press pass is required on race day for admittance to finish area.
- Seating is limited for the “Night of Champions” dinner Saturday and the XTERRA Awards Dinner on Sunday.

How to Cover XTERRA: Please note that XTERRA is produced with the cooperation of landowners and we
respect their privacy. The following outlines the access policy for this year’s race:
- There is no pre-riding of the bike course by competitors or media, it is ridden blind on race day
- Access to the bike course on race day is provided by chauffeured press van/SUV ONLY.
- Space is limited so you must reserve your seat in advance .
- Photographers will be advised of any restrictions on inclusion of specific landmarks.
- Press may ride the three-mile loop bike practice course on their own bikes by presenting your press
badge to registration and paying the $10 one-day USA Tri License Insurance fee.
- All riders must display a practice plate on their bike and wear a helmet.

SPECTATORS GUIDE ON HOW TO WATCH THE RACE
Maui’s World Championship XTERRA course is a classic Point-to-Point, covering 27 miles of unyielding terrain. The
experience is a sensory riot – crystal clear Pacific waters, fragrant breezes, bright sun, fine volcanic dust, needle-like
kiawe thorns, soft white sand, cool green lawns, and lava rock of every shape, color, and size.
Start and Swim: Located at Maluaka “Prince” Beach fronting the Maui Prince Hotel, there are plenty of great vantage
points to watch the mass start from the lawn above. Pros are easy to spot with their identifying swim caps - men in blue
and women in pink. A short beach sprint mid-race between two 750-meter laps of a triangular course gives spectators a
chance to pick out their friends and family from the field.
T1 and T2 - Bike and Run Transition: Located a few yards from the swim start in a big grassy area at the lobby level
of the Maui Prince Hotel. The transition area is for competitors only, however, spectators may view the change-over from
any position around the boundary.
Bike: The bike course is not open to the public and cannot be pre-ridden by competitors.
Run: Most of the run course is also on private lands and closed to the public with the exception of a long, leg-burning
section of sand at Makena Beach, aka “Big Beach”.
Finish: The Maui Prince Hotel at Makena Resort is the place to be for both transitions, the finish, live race reports, and
big screen TV action with a continuously updated leader board. There’s food booths, XTERRA Gear shop, the Kona
Brewing Liquid Aloha Lounge, and a front row seat to one of the greatest spectacles in all of sport - the spontaneous,
ecstatic, and sometimes tear-jerking displays of emotion at the finish line. You can even get a professional haircut in
exchange for a donation to the Challenged Athletes Foundation at the Paul Mitchell Cut-a-thon.
Friends, Family and fans that are not able to attend the race can watch the
action unfold in real time on the internet at www.XTERRA.tv. The race
coverage, with live streaming video and text updates, will begin just before 9am Hawaii time (12 noon PST, 3pm EST,
9pm in Europe, 5am in Sydney, Australia, 8am in New Zealand, 4pm in Brazil).
The Maui Prince Hotel (808-874-1111)
Secluded at Makena Resort on a perfect smile of a beach
at the foot of Haleakala, The Maui Prince Hotel is a
sanctuary. The serenity can be felt from the first moment a
lei of seashells is draped over your shoulders and you are
welcomed with the genuine smiles and warm attention of the
staff. The resort has no immediate neighbors and is built
around an Asian meditation garden with stone paths, quiet
corners for contemplation, waterfalls, and streams swarming
with brilliant red and gold carp. The roof is the sky. The door
of every room opens to this atrium, while the windows and
lanai (balcony) look out upon the ocean.
Most people settle into the immediate serenity and find
themselves sitting beside the pool or in a cabana on the
beach, watching all the little white boats streaming to
Molokini. And if the sea is calm, they may hear the great
humpback whales singing in the deep.

QUICK FACTS ON THE XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
WHAT IS XTERRA: An off-road multisport event that combines open-water swimming with mountain biking and trail
running. XTERRA, the world’s premier off-road multisport race, is designed to have
top pros finish in roughly two-and-a-half hours. Generally the swim comprises
approximately 10% of the total time it takes to finish the race, the mountain
bike 65%, and the run 25%.
WHO RACES IN MAUI: Roughly 550 of the best professional (75) and
amateur (450+) off-road athletes on the planet representing more than
20 countries & 40 U.S. states. Ages 14 (Shayna Powless from
California) to 71 (Manfred Klittich from Germany).
WHEN: Activities all weekend long (Free clinics start Friday morning, trail runs on Saturday) – the main event, the XTERRA World
Championship, starts at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 26.
WHERE: At the Maui Prince Hotel in Makena on Maui’s South Shore.
The 1.5-kilometer (1-mile) swim starts in front of the Prince Beach
32-kilometer (20-miles) mountain bike climbs 3,000 feet up and down the
slopes of Haleakala, and the 12-kilometer (7.5-miles) trail run traverses lava
rock, forest trails, and beach sand.
WHY: The XTERRA World Championship race is the last in a series of 100+ events held in 17 countries and 32 U.S.
States. The concept is to provide a bona-fide off-road world championship for the age group and pro athlete.
For professionals, there is $125,000 in cash up for grabs.
THE COURSE: Arguably the toughest and most scenic on the entire circuit, the Maui XTERRA course is a classic.
From the crystal clear waters of the Pacific, to the sharp lava rocks and kiawe thorns of the bike and run - Hawaii’s
natural obstacles are unlike anywhere else on earth.
HOW THEY QUALIFIED: Amateurs enter the World Championship through one of two means:
1. Earn a slot by qualifying as one of the top finishers in their age group at one of 17 XTERRA Championship races; in
Australia, Austria, Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Saipan, South Africa, United Kingdom, and
Nevada, Utah, Alabama, California, and Virginia in the United States. There is also a special Hawaii resident qualifier,
the MountainMan, held on Oahu each year, or...
2. Enter through the at large drawing - a limited number of slots are offered on a first-come first-serve basis.
XTERRA BACKGROUND: The first XTERRA race was held in Maui on November 3, 1996, with just 123 participants.
The demand for the sport of XTERRA exploded thereafter and there are now more than 30,000 competitors from all 50
states and more than 40 countries worldwide.

The off-road adventurous spirit of XTERRA reaches out
to the community with the XTERRA Makena Beach Trail
Runs. Both races are open for registration to one-and-all,
and a benefit for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui
County. In an effort to get more participants involved, the
5km is open for walkers too! Awards go to the top three
in each age group and the 10km women’s amateur winner earns roundtrip airfare between the mainland and
Hawaii on Hawaiian Airlines.

Hawaiian’s way of saying, “run fast young lady!”
The race begins with an ascent up the south slope of
Haleakala into a desert-like environment. After a pass
though "Cactus Alley", competitors are treated to a run on
the white sands of Makena Beach, famed as one of the
most beautiful beaches in the world. The course
continues through the "spooky" forest adorned with kiawe
trees and leads to a striking black sand beach. The final
leg is a balancing act of speed and skill, as runners cross
over jagged lava rocks, infamous for grabbing and
twisting unsuspecting ankles.
Entry is $25 and all competitors receive a collectable
t-shirt, plus refreshments.

XTERRA BY NIGHT
Maui is a reward for a great season, and as such
competitors are treated to a pair of "ono" dinners with the
Night of Champions carbo-loading affair on Saturday and
the awards celebration on Sunday - complete with highlight
videos and special presentations. A celebration of country
pride highlights the start of Saturday’s dinner as athletes will
walk into the luau festival grounds together waving their
country flags. Both are held under the stars at the magnificent Maui Prince.
On Sunday, it gets scary! The XTERRA Halloween
costume party is legendary...Despite the typical post-race
banter and antics by delirious athletes, the best-costumed
competitor wins Hawaiian Airlines roundtrip tickets for two
from the U.S. mainland to Hawaii.

XTERRA sponsor GU Energy Gel and the XTERRA Eco Team have teamed together
to demonstrate the importance of keeping XTERRA’s trails clean.
All competitors are asked to sign the XTERRA Green Pledge at registration... and on
race day will receive a raffle ticket from GU for each GU wrapper they turn in to the GU
booth. At the awards dinner, the winner of the raffle will receive the autographed pledge
banner and a great swag package from GU, ad five runners-up will also get GU swag.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Maui’s XTERRA course is legendary, and conditions change radically from year-to-year, diminishing the advantage to
repeat competitors and perpetuating the course's stature as the most intimidating in the series. Hawaii’s natural
obstacles are unlike anywhere else on earth and for the 500+ athletes racing in Maui – the XTERRA World
Championship is a truly unique experience. The victor will traverse this rugged terrain in roughly two and half hours
(although Conrad Stoltz broke the record by almost two minutes when he crossed in 2:22:55 in 2002), with the lead
woman 30-minutes behind. Age groupers must reach the bike/run transition by 1:00pm (race starts at 9am), or their
quest for the finish will be cut short.

Competitors are not permitted to pre-ride the XTERRA World
Championship course. For newcomers, it is read and react.
For veterans, the experience might allow them to remember
portions but more often than not it instills a solid feeling of
respect for the Old Lady of XTERRA.
Every year competitors say, “XYZ course is tougher than
Maui”. Every year around noon on Championship Sunday,
the look – the eyes pointing down and the head shaking side
to side – tells you that there is nothing like Haleakala.
Climbing from sea level to 1,200 feet then down and back up to 1,400 feet with a final portion called “the plunge” of 8kilometers back to sea level, this track has everything. Full of rock strewn paths, gnarly golf ball sized gravel, short
steep and long go forever climbs, hard packed lava, and sometimes, depending on conditions, deep, dusty silt.

Out on the run athletes will find all sorts of sand - white, gold, black, salt and
pepper, green or garnet. There’s a lot more climbing involved, a spooky forest to
navigate, a dozen different surfaces to cross, and just before the finish line some of
Hawaii’s most stunning oceanfront scenery.
There is no accounting for the heat generated by gnarly lava fields, making otherwise simple obstacles extremely difficult to conquer. The "Makena Beach Mile" is
a grueling slog along soft sand, but a beautiful end run along the ocean-front golf
course helps racers forget it all at the finish...

managing director of the XTERRA Global Tour - "Kahuna
Dave" Nicholas. Having been
to every World Championship
race in Maui since
creating
the sport back in 1996, and
having been onsite to see this
years races unfold in New
Zealand, all over Europe and
the U.S. - the Kahuna is more than qualified to speculate on
who might win it all this year. That doesn't mean he'll get it
right, in fact, he's hardly ever right (just 2 for 12 in picking
winners over the last six years).
So, with a grain of salt, but some tasty insight nonetheless,
here are the Kahuna's '08 Maui prognostications:
As the years go on and the quality and size of the field
grows it becomes more and more difficult to try and figure
out who the favorites are. But then again, I have the
benefit of having been at every Maui and most of the World
Tour races so if anyone can make a guess – I guess that
would be me.
So we must look at those three as the obvious choices.
Swiss Sibylle Matter concentrated on long distance races
this year and only did one XTERRA; which she won. Carina
Wasle has been a winner on the Euro Tour but has not fared
well in the heat of Hawaii. So she is training in San Diego
to prepare and Maui with its long climbs is this Austrian gals
kind of course. So, you say, where are the Yanks? Shonny
Vanlandigham is the top US woman and was 4th last year
after being 9th in 2006. With that kind of improvement and
a win under her belt this year (Alabama) she must be
considered. The real dark horse is a new gal living in the US
but a Scotsman err ... Scotswoman? Lesley Patterson is a
tiny, little thing a la Renata or Carina and while her
technical skills aren’t yet developed, she can climb and she
can run. Starting with a 6th in Temecula she improved to a
2nd in Alabama and finished the season with 4th in Tahoe.
Still, with all the possibilities, I think it will come down to the
same scenario as last year. Julie leads big out of the water.
Sibylle is close to her. The rest of the women have to pace
themselves and ride their race to catch her. If they think
she’s slow, keep in mind that her bike split was the 3rd
fastest last year, so they will have to push, but without

Series and three-time World Champ Melanie McQuaid does
not want to see that happen. The worry for both needs to be
a resurgent Renata Bucher who placed 2nd at Tahoe, won
the European Tour and has been training in the US for the
past few weeks to avoid any problems with big-time jet lag.

breaking the bank. Shonny has to swim faster and ride a bit
quicker; Mel is swimming fine but has to put in a better run;
Renata has to overcome her Maui luck.
The men’s race is really open to speculation. Nico Lebrun
has been unstoppable in Europe this year. Conrad could
not beat him overseas. Conrad has been dominant in the
US – until a lackluster performance at Tahoe.

“Michi” Weiss simply devastated a good field in Austria and
must be feared. But the French come with more ammunition. Always a threat but not yet a winner at Maui is Olivier
Marceau. His epic battles with Eneko Llanos, Conrad, and
Hamish Carter are legendary. Franky Batelier and Sylvain
Dodet make it a strong French presence. Batelier had a
series of seconds this year in Europe and has won in
Denmark. Dodet is coming back after a few years of being
injured, but looks very fit and says he is ready to resume his

So now I’ve written too many words and said nothing. And I
am not even running for President!
place at the sharp end of the field. South African champion
Dan Hugo nearly pulled off an upset of Conrad in the US
series, but had a horrible European season. Bad luck
plagued him all over the Continent and then Tahoe was not
his best. Two time world champ Eneko Llanos is back after
an almost win but solid second in Kona. Does that mean he
is tired or ready to rumble with a two week rest on the
beach?
From this side, Mike Vine is looking very potent. Big win in
Colorado in August, 15 seconds behind in Utah and dominance at Tahoe. Best everyone be aware the Canadian is
going to be a contender. Seth Wealing is back training,
Josiah Middaugh is always tough and Brian Smith was 3rd
in 2007.
What I’ve seen Nico do this year is pretty amazing. He
comes out of the water with a seemingly insurmountable
gap to the leaders. Yet coming off the bike he is never worse
than 2nd and usually first. Marceau is always up for Maui
and is super fit from competing in his 3rd Olympics. Mike
Vine has shown he is peaking at the right time.
I have to look at Nico Lebrun and Mike Vine. They swim
almost identical times and they will start carving up the bike
field immediately. Batelier, Marceau, Llanos and Conrad
should get the lead quickly and it will be up to Lebrun and
Vine to catch and pass them. But they know how to do that
and have done so a couple times this year. How far back
will Michi Weiss be? From what we saw in Austria he’ll be
at least 4 minutes back from the leaders and a few back
from Vine and Lebrun.
Maui is a very different animal. It is not technical, yet it is
technical. It requires great power, yet it also requires skills
and then there is The Plunge – which deserves being
capitalized – and separates the men from the boys.
All this worry and wear and then you have to run in the heat
and dust and rocks for another 40+ minutes. The winner
really is the champion.
Conrad and Hamish won their first time at Maui, but I don’t
think that will happen in 2008. I see it as Olivier, Conrad
and Nico Lebrun with Mike Vine and Seth, Brian Smith or
Josiah in the top 5. Melanie has had a chance to see Julie
and should improve her game this year and for the women
it could come down to the run on the black sand beach
headed home.
But one thing you can bet on. As it has been for so
long, it will be one hell of a race.

RACING ACCOMPLISHMENTS: A five-time XTERRA U.S.
Pro Series Champion (2001, ‘02, ‘03, ‘05 & ‘07), and the
only three-time men’s pro XTERRA World Champion.
2002: Won in Keystone, California, Tahoe, and Maui.
2003: Won first race at Big Bear, placed 2d in Richmond, 3d
in Keystone, won in Tahoe, and won Pro Points Series.
2004: Placed second in Richmond, 6th in Keystone, second

A pre-ride crash at the XTERRA USA Championship kept
him out of nationals and worlds.
LAST YEAR: Won XTERRA South Africa for fourth straight
year, then the XTERRA West Champs. Won Southeast and
East Champs on back-to-back weekends in June. DNF’d at
in Utah because of a mechanical.
Won USA
Championship, Pro Series title, then World Champs for third
time. Named the Off-Road triathlete of the year at
Endurance Sports Awards.
THIS YEAR: Placed 4th at XTERRA South Africa, won the
West Champs for 6th time in his career, won the Southeast

8th in Athens, and 19th in Beijing racing for Switzerland;
2000 ITU Long Distance World Champion.
2004: Won in Saipan, Austria, and Germany, was 7th at
XTERRA Czech, and third at XTERRA Italy. Put together
the best three races in Europe to claim the XTERRA
European Tour Championship. Placed 2nd at XTERRA
World Championship.
2005: Won XTERRA Saipan for third straight year, finished
third in Temecula, won XTERRA Czech and XTERRA Italy,
placed 3rd in Richmond, then won XTERRA Spain which
earned him his second straight XTERRA European Tour
title. Did not race in Keystone. Placed 6th in Tahoe and
finished third in the XTERRA U.S. Pro Points Series. Was
7th in Maui.
2006: Won XTERRA Saipan for fourth straight time and
was third at XTERRA France, which he helped organize.

MAUI PASTS: Three runner-ups, a 5th, and a 7th in five
attempts. Last year he headed out onto the run stride for
stride with Stoltz until the first big climb when the Caveman
pulled away but he held on for 2nd. In 2006 he was winning
the race until the last mile of the run when Hamish Carter
passed him, and he held on for second just 19 seconds
behind Carter - the closest runner-up finish in race history.
In 2005 he had the 4th best swim time and 8th best bike
split to finish 7th overall. Was the runner-up in 2004 when
he was the race leader until a mile out of run transition, didn’t race in 2003, and placed 5th in 2002.

2006: Finished 10th in California while posting the fastest
bike split, 5th in Alabama, his best XTERRA finish ever at
the time, 9th in Richmond, and won the Midwest
Championship in Milwaukee (which was a duathlon format
as swim was cancelled) on August 6. Placed 12th at the
USA Championship and 17th at XTERRA Worlds.
LAST YEAR: Finished 5th in Temecula, 7th in Bama, DNF
in Richmond, was 3rd at Mountain Champs, 8th at XTERRA
USA Champs and was 6th in the Pro Series. Finished 3rd
overall and top American at the XTERRA World Champs.
THIS YEAR: Won the inaugural XTERRA Winter World
Championship (bike, snowshoe, run, randonee) at
Snowbasin Resort in Utah and the Fire and Ice award for
having the fastest combined times at the XTERRA World
Championship and Winter Worlds. Placed 3rd (top
American) at West Champs, sixth at Southeast Champs,
third at XTERRA Brazil, and third at Mountain Champs.
Placed 6th at XTERRA USA Championship and 4th in the
Pro Series.
MAUI PASTS: Last year Smith was 113th out of the water,
and moved up to 3rd place overall (top American) by virtue
of the fastest bike split – a blazing 1:30:51. Placed 17th in
first attempt in 2006.

- October 2000. Over 70 worldwide professional race wins,
and 10 top 5 Ironman finishes.
2005: Placed 7th at the XTERRA USA Championship
where he posted the fastest run, and was 5th at the
XTERRA World Championship in Maui.
2006: Finished 3rd at the XTERRA USA Championship
and had the fastest run there for second straight year.

Championship and posted the fastest run.

finish in Maui. It’s the second time Legh has had the fastest
run of the day in Maui (also in 2003). Did not finish in 2006,
placed 5th and had the second fastest run time in 2005, was
15th overall in 2004, and set the run course record in 2003
with a 36:32 11k. Finished 15th in 1999, and 12th in 1998.

Jacques Chirac and was recognized as the off-road triathlete of the year at Competitor's Endurance Sports Awards.
2003: Third at Big Bear, won Richmond, won in Czech
Republic, placed 4th in Keystone, won XTERRA Germany,

The Hawaiian Airlines “Double” Purse is awarded to the pro man and woman with the fastest combined
2008 XTERRA World Championship and Ironman Hawaii Championship time, a feat reserved for the
world’s leading endurance athletes as the two events are held just two weeks apart (in year’s past it’s
only been a week in-between races). “The Double” has become a sought-after title by both pro and amateur competitors.
Hawaiian Airlines pays $2,500 to both the top man and woman professionals with the fastest times and in addition, will
present the amateur winners with round trip tickets for two from the mainland to Maui.
Last year Spain’s Eneko Llanos was seventh at the Ironman World Championship with a time of 8:26:00 and placed 13th
in Maui (2:51:17) for a combined 11:17:17. It was his second straight Double crown, and having just finished 2nd in Kona
he’s poised to make it three-in-a-row this year. In the women’s pro field Erika Csomor from Hungary was 10th at Ironman
in 9:39:47 and 16th in Maui (3:33:03) for a combined 13:12:50. Graham Wadsworth from the UK and Beate Kleindienst
from Germany won the amateur double titles.

2008 XTERRA U.S. PRO SERIES RESULTS
The XTERRA USA Championship on October 5 was the last of five races for professionals competing in the XTERRA
U.S. Pro Points Series. Melanie McQuaid won both the USA Championship race and the Pro Series, while on the men’s
side Mike Vine won the race, but Conrad Stoltz (despite finishing 8th) won his 6th U.S. Pro Series Championship.
Pros were awarded points for their finish at each of the five events and could "drop" one of their scores from the first four
events, but not the finale. Thus, they counted their best four scores in addition to their finish in Nevada. The Series dished
out $70,000 to the top scorers, and in addition $20,000 was given away at Richmond, Utah, Temecula, and Alabama, and
$40,000 in Nevada.

2008 XTERRA EUROPEAN TOUR RESULTS
2005 XTERRA World Champion Nicolas Lebrun won his third straight XTERRA European Tour title by winning races in
the UK, Czech, France-Auron and France-Mondelieu for a perfect 400 points. On the women’s side Renata Bucher won
her third XTERRA European Tour Championship in four years. Bucher won the last race of the season, the inaugural
XTERRA France in Mandelieu la Napoule, to catapult past Anna Baylis-Scheiderbauer in points.
The XTERRA European Tour's top finishers shared 20,000 Euros ($27,000 U.S.) and the prize purse at each
championship race was 15,000 Euros with the European Championship at XTERRA Italy awarding 25,000 Euros. Racers
counted their best four scores out of the six events.

THE XTERRA HALL OF FAME
When XTERRA celebrated its 10th year in October of 2005,
the founders created the XTERRA HALL OF FAME. This year,
on the eve of the XTERRA World Championship on the luau
grounds of the Maui Prince, another XTERRA legend will be
honored in front of their peers at the night of champions dinner.
NED OVEREND (2005)
After retiring from mountain biking in 1996 at the age of 40 (he won six national titles and
became mountain bikings first world champion in 1990), Overend competed in the firstever XTERRA in 1996, finishing third. In ‘97 he was second, and in ‘98 and ‘99 he won
consecutive World Championships at the ripe young age of 42 & 43. He was also the
XTERRA USA Series Champion in 2002. At the 2004 World Championship, at age 50,
Overend posted the 9th fastest bike split and placed 21st overall. Midway through the
bike course Peter Reid was overheard saying “There’s a 50-year-old in front of me!”
As an XTERRA pro, Ned regularly beat the spandex off guys 10 and 15 years his junior. He was so devastating on the mountain bike that he earned the nicknames of
“Deadly Nedly” and “The Lung.” At the end of his XTERRA career, race commentators
respectfully called him “The Old Man of the Mountain.”
SCOTT TINLEY (2006)
Scott Tinley was named the second inductee into the XTERRA Hall of Fame. In 1996,
Scott competed in XTERRA's inaugural event, known as Aquaterra at the time. That day,
he finished in 4th place and went on to finish in the top 10 in both 1997 and '98. But more
than just an athlete, Scott was one of the early ambassadors for the sport. Tinley was at
the sharp end of getting athletes to Maui. When you look at the high level pro's that came
10 years ago, it is far more impressive than what one, solitary, unusual race with a
$5,000 prize list should have attracted. Jimmy Riccitello, Mike Pigg, Wes Hobson, Ray
Browning, Pat Brown, Scott Molina, Emilio Desoto, Jeff Devlin, Kenny Glah, Paul
Huddle, Michellie Jones, Paula Newby, Sian Welch, Karen Smeyers and more I probably can't remember. A lot of that participation is because of ST. Tinley also campaigned
in the Hawaiian Mountain Tour bike race in Hawaii to promote XTERRA and near the end
of his career, he helped found and develop the sport of off-road triathlon.
KERSTIN WEULE (2007)
Kerstin Weule, using equally deadly swim, mountain bike and run speed, won more
XTERRA races than anyone (until Jamie Whitmore took on the challenge). She won 19
XTERRA titles, including the US. Pro Series in 1999 and 2000, and the 2000 World
Championship. Born in Braunlage, Germany in 1966, Weule’s name was synonymous
with XTERRA for years. She was 5th at Maui in 1997 after a second in Kirkwood and a
third at Big Bear. The winning started in 1998 in Louisiana and she won the next two big
races. In her career, Kerstin won at almost every U.S. venue where XTERRA traveled
too, including races in the UK and Canada. Her early battles in 97-98 and 99 with
Lorraine Barrow and Jody Purcell were wonderful to watch. Weule brought much to
XTERRA – an open disposition, the ability to share all that she knew at XTERRA
University clinics, a great laugh, her cartwheel at the finish line, & blue painted toenails
on raceday. Kerstin retired from XTERRA in 2003 while still able to podium anywhere.

“competing to help kids”. His fundraising efforts assist children in Mozambique
with housing and education.
2005 - Dr. John Mills – Dr. John has spearheaded the medical support team on

hours in preperation for the event
2004 - Willie Stewart – Willie lost his arm in a construction accident but has not
let that stop him from pursuing his favorite sports. A high tech prosthetic with
shocks and quick release mechanism has allowed him to ride a mountain bike and
rip up XTERRA courses all over the U.S.
2003 - Bryan Medrano – Bryan lives life to the fullest while raising awareness
and funds for Huntington’s Disease, a neurological disorder that effects him and
other family members.

XTERRA WINTER WORLDS /// FIRE & ICE AWARD
Flashback to March 8, 2008Brian Smith jolts past Josiah Middaugh less than 20 meters from the finish line to win the
inaugural XTERRA Winter World Championship in dramatic fashion at Snowbasin Resort. After nearly two hours of
grueling racing action that included mountain biking, snowshoeing, running and ski mountaineering in snow flurries at
6,000+ feet elevation, Smith pulled off a jaw-dropping come-from-behind victory by a little more than one-second in
1:58:29.92 (with Middaugh right behind in 1:58:31.21).
Spectators at the finish line remarked that it was the most unbelievable 13 seconds of racing – in any sport – they had
ever seen. “I had goose bumps, it was unreal,” said Mike Caldwell of Ogden, UT. “That’s about as pure and epic a
sporting moment as I’ve ever witnessed.”
It went something like this – 200 yards of downhill skiing through eight gates – all viewable from the main plaza at
Snowbasin. Middaugh comes into sight of the spectators and falls rounding the first gate. At this point all he needs to
do is stay upright and the race is his. He picks himself up and slowly rounds the next two gates only to fall on his back
again, this time sliding down the hill. As Middaugh gets up and going again Smith, fueled by years of alpine racing and
a natural competitive fire, emerges from the tree line like a man possessed. Seconds later and with just two gates to go
Smith zooms past Middaugh on the inside and speeds across the finish line arms raised high.
In doing so Smith not only won XTERRA’s Winter Worlds, but captured the first-ever Fire and Ice award for having the
fastest combined times at the 2007 XTERRA World Championship in Maui (where he was third overall – top American)
and XTERRA Winter Worlds in Utah.
Several other XTERRA standouts – including host of current and former national champions – made it clear that their
athletic endeavors don’t end with the summer season. In the women’s race adventure racing phenom Sari Anderson
won the Winter World Championship, but former XTERRA amateur national champion and mother of two Lisa Isom –
who was third at Winter Worlds – won the Fire and Ice duel. Isom edged Emma Garrard, the reigning XTERRA amateur National Champ who was racing as a pro for the first time in the snow, by less than two minutes in the combined
times event.
In the amateur Fire and Ice battle Ross McMahan and Caroline Colonna, who each won their XTERRA age group
national championship (Ross in ’06 in the 35-39 age group and Caroline last year in the 40-44 division) posting the
fastest combined times.
On October 26 the FIRE part of the 2008/09 double will be contested on the south shore of Maui, and on March 8 the
ICE returns to Utah. Put them together and you’ve got the hottest & coolest multisport event combination on the planet.

THE XTERRA TRAIL RUNNING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP DEBUTS DEC. 7, 2008
In 2008 XTERRA took trail running to the extreme with the halfmarathon distance "Xduro". More than a dozen endurance
runs across the U.S. and several more around the globe have
prepared runners for the ultimate Hawaiian experience - the
XTERRA Trail Running World Championship at Kualoa Ranch
(pictured here) on the island of Oahu.
The inaugural XTERRA Trail Running World Championship is
scheduled for December 7, 2008, a week before the Honolulu Marathon.
"After 12 years of producing trail runs alongside our XTERRA off-road triathlons we've learned that our audience wants
a bigger challenge than a 10k," said TEAM Unlimited CEO Tom Kiely. "What the market told us was to create a series of
half-marathons that have a physical challenge parallel to that of a road marathon, but with Mother Nature along for the
ride."
The XTERRA Trail Run World Champs will be held in conjunction with the XTERRA Trail Running Series, a collection of
50 trail runs of various distances twisting on crooked, dirty, and rocky paths from Malibu to Japan. Global Tour stops for
the 21k "Xduro" included New Zealand, Japan, France, Italy, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
The final stop in the Series will certainly satisfy even the most adventurous runner. Kualoa Ranch, located on the northeastern side of Oahu less than an hour from Honolulu, is a 4000-acre working cattle ranch spread from the steep
mountain cliffs to the sparkling sea. The ranch terrain varies from dense rainforest to broad open valleys and from
beautiful white sand beaches to awesome verdant cliff faces. Kualoa Ranch has been the site of television shows and
Hollywood films such as Jurassic Park, Windtalkers, Pearl Harbor, Godzilla, Tears of the Sun, 50 First Dates, and LOST.
In addition to the epic location, the World Champs will immerse participants in a festival atmosphere with live music, great
food, and family entertainment. Shorter distance trail runs, races for kids, a walk-a-thon for charity, and relay team
competitions will also be offered.
"XTERRA is thrilled with the growth of its Trail Running Series launched two years ago, and we think the longer distance
focus will push it to whole new extreme in terms of participation and challenge," said Janet Clark, President of TEAM
Unlimited/XTERRA. "XTERRA Trail Runs give runners an opportunity to explore some wildly natural environments and
challenge Mother Nature's diverse and unique offerings from roots and rocks, to stream crossings and unexpected scenic
vistas."

THE BREEDER’S CHOICE XTERRA K9 CHALLENGE
Central Garden & Pet Company's ultra premium dog food and
treat brand, Breeder's Choice, was the lead sponsor of a brand
new competitive race series featuring teams comprised of dogs
and their owners this year.
The Breeder's Choice XTERRA K9 Challenge was an integral
part of the 2008 XTERRA America Tour, with events at each of
the stops on the Tour and the XTERRA Trail Running National
Championship.
Several hundred dogs and their owners competed in the events,
which are races against the clock in a spectator-friendly
combined trail run and obstacle course format that featured a
tunnels dogs had to crawl through, box jumps, serpentine
maneuvers, speed step-overs, quick sprints, and teeter-totter
crossings.
"Dogs have always had a special relationship with their care
takers and more and more people are including their dogs in
their everyday family activities," said Jim Heim, President of the
Pet Division of Central Garden & Pet. "This is a totally unique
event that encourages people and their dogs to be active, interact with one another and have fun. The beauty of the K9
Challenge is that anyone can participate. It's not breed specific
or limited to highly trained or specialized dogs."
The inaugural year of the Breeder's Choice XTERRA K9
Challenge was a huge success and will continue to be part of the
XTERRA festivities in 2009.
In addition to the competition, The Breeder's Choice XTERRA
K9 Challenge events featured free product sampling,
professional tips and advice on dog care, coupons and special
offers at retail.
"The K9 Challenge is a perfect extension for the XTERRA
series," said Tom Kiely, CEO of TEAM Unlimited. "Central

XTERRA ECO TEAM
The Eco Team is an athlete initiated program to engage the XTERRA
community in environmental initiatives to help protect and preserve the areas
we race in, and give back to the communities that host us.
The program started in 2007 by organizing ecological restoration work
parties at our race venues and initiating a gear recycling program for donation
to local bicycle advocacy programs.
Highlights include:
- At the XTERRA World Championship in Maui nearly 20 volunteers gathered
for a three-mile trash sweep that extended from the far side of Makena “Big”
Beach along the coast back to the host hotel at the Maui Prince.
- At the XTERRA USA Championship in Nevada the XTERRA Eco Team, with
more than a dozen volunteers, planted 10 trees, mixed and poured over 30
bags of concrete for the foundation of bear-proof recycling boxes, installed 7
stream and natural habitat protection signs, and filled several trash bags with
litter picked up along 5 miles of trail and a stream in Incline Village.
- In North Bend, WA the XTERRA Eco Team joined forces with Seattle's Back
Country Bicycle Trails Club (BBTC) to restore a section of a popular mountain
bike trail in the North Cascades. More than a dozen volunteers worked 15ft
of trail "turnpike" that had been damaged by winter storms. The crew
scrounged for rock and mineral soil to make the section suitable for horses
and mountain bikes.
- For the XTERRA Vashon Island race XTERRA athletes cleaned out their
garages
for
the
Eco
Team’s
first
"bike-cycling"
event.
At the race they collected bicycle parts, clothing, and any bike related components for donation to Seattle's BikeWorks: a bicycle advocacy non-profit
that teaches bicycle maintenance skills to children of low-income families.
BikeWorks uses
donated equipment to teach teens how to build or repair
bikes and teens are allowed to keep the bikes they build. Younger children
receive free bikes from Bikeworks and earn prizes for the number of miles
they ride. BikeWorks also donates recycled bicycles to The Village Project in
Africa. Gear donations were already piled up at the registration table one hour
before the race, and the two boxes the ECO TEAM brought were at capacity
as soon as they were set down. Donations included tires and tubes, new bike
clothing and socks, seats, pedals, cables, chains, cranks, wheel sets, bike
shoes, lights, water bottles, stickers, a steel roadbike frame, and a wonderful
kids' BMX bike!
In 2009 and beyond the XTERRA Eco Team will continue to make a difference
ecologically by offering a few hours of time to local environmental initiatives
near our race courses. This could be anything from trail maintenance to park
clean-up, ecological restoration, or tree planting work parties.

Lightweight XTERRA Shoes Designed to Help Athletes
Stalk Their On-Course Prey
TJ Gray and Ashley Brown — designers of XTERRA’s new
line of footwear and apparel — stood at the finish line of the
XTERRA World Championship in Maui last October. While
many of the competitors lay in bed the night before counting
sheep in anticipation of the race, that afternoon Gray and
Brown were counting shoes.
Road shoe, road shoe, road shoe. As athletes poured
down from the lower slopes of Mount Haleakala from their
nearly seven-mile trail run over roots, rocks and ravines,
Gray and Brown couldn’t believe their eyes.
“Maybe one in 100 was a trail runner,” said Brown, who
along with partner Gray have also developed shoes for
Nike, adidas and Salomon. “They were all sacrificing stability for less weight.”
They returned to the drawing board, determined to make
XTERRA the lightest — but still, most stable — trail running
shoe on the market. With four months until the launch of the
shoes at the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City,
designs were tweaked, materials tested — including a
unique combination of lighter blown rubber in the forefoot
and a heavier high-abrasion carbon rubber in the heel.
But their biggest scientific sport discovery was yet to come.
After much trial and error in their New Hampshire lab, a
molding model never before seen in the category was
created. Gone was a traditional glued-together midsole,
replaced by a dual-injected, dual-density EVA made of two
layers — the top soft, the bottom harder — giving comfort
and stability while taking away weight.
The result: an eco-friendly design that’s one of the lightest
trail runner ever, weighing in at less than 10.5 ounces for
men, 9.5 for women.
With the weight issue solved, multi-sport competitors Gray
and Brown began to research every movement taken on a
trail — the footplant and lateral pushoff around a 90-degree
directional path change, the flexed-footed jump over water,
the balanced gripped-toe run across a log.
As they were going for a timed run in the woods near their
studios — furiously passing each other, taking turns as the
lead — the big-picture design inspiration for XTERRA’s new
footwear line came: a big-cat predator’s paw.
“Chasing its prey, a big cat grips into the earth — digging
into loose gravel, dirt, gaining time and distance on every
step, every leap,” said Gray, a former collegiate decathlete
at Syracuse.
“The outer part of their foot acts like a traction pad,” he
continued. “It’s from there that we came up with XTERRA’s
unique outsole lug concept.”
The concept’s name: WILDTred. According to Gray and
Brown, its carved claw-like perimeter lug design forms
independent touch pads from forefoot to heel with deep flex
zones for controlled, wrap-around grip. They also noted the
lugs are higher than the shoe bottom’s concave center,
helping it act as its front and rear suspension while creating
a larger surface area.
“With the cat’s paw, we liked the symbolism of man’s
co-existence with all things found in the environment, said
Brown. “We adapt to our surroundings, whether it be
animal, plant or any of nature’s elements.
Continued Brown: “The thought behind XTERRA’s new line
is that the outdoors are no longer to be conquered; they’re
to be connected with.”
XTERRA’s 2008 footwear launch includes five styles: trail
runner, trail trainer (each $115), ultra trainer ($95),
performance sandal ($75) and performance slide ($55).

XTERRA BEGINNINGS
IT REALLY STARTED in the late '80's. That's when Tom
Kiely (CEO of TEAM Unlimited - owners and producers of
XTERRA) was tasked with creating more publicity for the
Waikiki Oahu Visitors Association. His idea was sports TV.
"First, sports is part of our life blood in Hawaii, and second,
what looks good on TV? The beaches and the ocean,"
explained Kiely.
The concept was pretty simple. TV sports and
entertainment is one of the biggest industries in the world.
The travel industry is THE BIGGEST industry in the world.
Bring those two together in programming, and you've got
something big.
So he came up with the idea for the Hawaiian International
Ocean Challenge - a lifeguard skills competition that
attracted water safety specialists from Australia, New
Zealand,
California,
and
of
course,
Hawaii.
Then, he forged a relationship with ESPN - the worldwide
leader in sports.
In 1990 the Ocean Challenge was broadcast on ESPN,
and millions of viewers were exposed to the beauty of
Waikiki - the sun, sand, and crystal clear blue water of the
Pacific Ocean. Subsequently, this is where David "Kahuna"
Nicholas enters the picture - as "race director."
"So we get into producing the Ocean Challenge," says
Kiely. "And now I'm thinking I've got all these athletes and
TV crews and if it costs me this much to produce one show,
it'll cost less for another, and even less for a third."
ESPN approves two more shows (Waikiki King's Race and
Diamond Head Wahine Windsurfing Classic) and in 1991
TEAM Unlimited produces three events and three TV
shows. The concept is working, and Hawaii is reaping the
benefits of the outdoor exposure the shows are generating.
"So the next year (1992) we produced seven Hawaiian
Sports Adventure Showsmultiple segments, different
stories, great scenics, and 30-minutes of entertaining, good
fun stuff," said Kiely.
Those seven shows were in addition to the Ocean
Challenge and a few others televised events, including the
inaugural Tour O' Hawaii.
"Now that was a great event," said Nicholas - now the
managing director of the XTERRA Global Tour. "The Tour
O' Hawaii happened before professional cyclists were
allowed to compete in the Olympics so the top riders from
every country kept their amateur status so they could race
in the Olympics. We just missed Lance because he signed
with Motorola, but we had George Hincapie, Jan Ulrich,
Tyler Hamilton, and dozens of others. Looking back, the
field was a who's who of international cycling."
A few years later the Olympics allowed pros to compete,
road cycling in the U.S. was on the decline, and the Tour O'
Hawaii was no more. At the same time, however, mountain
biking was taking off. So in 1995, in addition to 12 other TV
shows and several events, TEAM Unlimited produced the
Hawaiian Mountain Tour.
In doing so Nicholas and mountain bike Hall-of-Famer
Dean Crandall established the rules and held the first-ever
mountain bike stage race. This is also where many of the
XTERRA greats first appeared. The likes of Ned Overend,
Shari Kain, Melanie McQuaid, Steve Larsen, Mike Kloser,
Leslie Tomlinson, and host of others were taking part in the
Hawaiian Mountain Tour. Now these races took place at
Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, where the Koolau mountain range
meets the ocean, and the story goes that after their races
the mountain bikers would ride down to the beach and jump
in the water. It sparked a thoughtwhy not have a
mountain bike triathlon?
By 1996 TEAM Unlimited had produced more than 50
shows and sporting events, and while the idea of an off-road
triathlon was enticing - who'd pay for it?
Almost simultaneously, the Aston Hotel in Maui (now the
Wailea Marriott Resort) was shopping for a good idea for
their grand opening and the Maui Visitors Bureau was
looking for a new event that could tell a different story about
Maui's south shore because all the exposure up to that point
was golf. Well, what better way to show off the hotel and
south shore than 1) starting the race at this beautiful beach
in front of the sponsor hotel, 2) follow a race that covers 21
miles of terrain with two dozen camera's, and 3) put it on TV
for the whole world to see?
Add a phone call to Kiely from a friendly competitor in the
marketplace (to remain unnamed) inquiring on the very
subject of producing an off-road triathlon and you have all
the main ingredients for XTERRA's birth.
Kiely likes to define luck as the "intersection of opportunity and activity." He recalls bringing Nicholas and VP of
Marketing Janet Clark into his office.
"Look, I said, so-and-so called me and said that they were
thinking about doing an off-road tri and if they do, then we're
forever second, so we have to be the first ones to do it. I
immediately called Aston and the MVB and said O.K., I've
got the idea, here's the thing, bing, bang, boom," said Kiely.
"And that's what got us started in XTERRA."

At the finish line of the very first XTERRA race in 1996 it was clear that
XTERRA was going to be more than just a one-off event. There was
passion in the eyes of the competitors and an unwavering feeling that
XTERRA was destined to become a lifestylea movement.

- The first piece of expansion started with more races, a lot more. From
one to 100+ in 17 countries in an 11-year span including a 60-stop America Tour for amateurs and a full-blown
European Tour. XTERRA races can now be found on every continent in the World (including Antarctica in 2009).
- We initiated a series of XTERRA Camps across the U.S. to help prepare athletes to race and get them started
towards an active lifestyle. To that end, we offer up half-distance races for newcomers at our major events, plus the
chance to race as part of a relay team. We also offer free XTERRA University clinics taught by our top pros.
- We dish out a half-million dollars in prize money to attract some of the world's leading multisport athletes and garner
the attention of national and international media.
- We make champions. In the U.S. off-road triathlon series alone we recognize 184 amateur regional champions and
22 amateur national champions, plus relay team and collegiate national champs, XTERRA Trail Run Series, National
and World Champs, and now XTERRA Winter World Champions.
- We get kids involved wherever we go with the XTERRA Kids Zone. It's a free schedule of events with running and
bike races, obstacle courses, and other fun games. The notion is to get kids outdoors and active.
- We put the lifestyle on display for millions to see with XTERRA TV. A dozen shows reaching into homes all over the

there were more than 50 5k, 10k, and 21k runs reaching into 15 U.S. States and seven countries - providing more
chances to participate in the healthy, active, outdoors lifestyle. We’ll host the inaugural XTERRA Trail Running World
Championship - a 21k Xduro - on Dec. 7, 2008 on the island of Oahu.
- We took the XTERRA format into the snow with the creation of the XTERRA Winter World Championship.

TEAM UNLIMITED
TEAM Unlimited is a Hawaii-based television events and marketing company,
founded in 1988. It owns and produces XTERRA, and in 2008 there will be more than
100 off-road triathlon events held in 16 countries. It all started with 123 competitors
one afternoon in Maui, and has since evolved into the most prestigious off-road
multisport race in the world. There are 20,000+ competitors, ages 13-71, from all 50
states and more than 40 countries competing in XTERRA events.
