“I’m Special!”
My Mom Said So!
By Matthew Bretz
B
rad Pitt, Bono, Gene Simmons, Hugh
Hefner, Megan Foxx, Miss January
1998, Wonder Woman, Darth Vader and
James Bond.
If your name appears on this list you
can feel free to stop reading this article, get
out a permanent marker and draw a silly
mustache on my picture in celebration of
how untouchable you are to the trials and
disappointments all us mere mortals have
to endure. For the rest of the 63 billion
people that call earth “home”, please
continue.
This month’s story time revolves
around a subject most of us don’t like to
discuss. If we did, we would have to admit
it happens, and what’s worse, we would
have to admit it happens to us.
I’m talking about the dreaded “brush
off”. You know - getting “diss-ed”, the
“run-around”, the “shrug-off”, the “back
burner”, being “shelved”, “passed up
for promotion” or my favorite - maybe
because I just made it up - “saving-it-forlater-just-incase-I-get-hungry”.
How many times have you met
someone and gotten really excited about
your new find only to be shut down and
disappointed because, all of a sudden, the
other person becomes too busy to hang
out, or return your calls? The signals
they are sending are obvious enough, but
because of your excitement, and maybe
a little threat to your ego, you just don’t
want to believe it. What happened? Where
did all that mutual enthusiasm disappear
to? The reasons for this anomaly are as
many as there are bad movies starring
Keanu Reeves. But that never seems to
matter, because regardless of what the real
reason is, it always feels like rejection.
It’s happened to all of us at one time
or another. And most of us have even been
the villain more times than we would like
to admit. Is it a show of cowardice? Maybe.
Is it not wasting time when you know it
won’t work? Also a maybe. Should Keanu
give up acting and pursue a music career
with his band Dog Star? Probably not. He
sucks at that too.
I honestly have no “good” answers
to why this ever happens to any of us. All
I can offer to you, my fellow everyman,
is a funny story about one such even that
recently happened to me. Hopefully this
will act two-fold. In one way you can see
once more that everybody goes through
this craziness. Secondly, I got a little flack
from a couple of you (you know who you
are) last month for not entertaining you
with an embarrassing story.
I was working my day job as a
bartender when a couple sat down and
ordered a round of beer. I didn’t see
anything very special about these two,
just customers at that point. But, as I
listened to their conversation (bartenders
hear everything), it became clear that they
were not actually a couple in the romantic
sense. The male half of the duo was house
hunting and his good friend Jamie was
helping him. They were going over points
they had discussed with his realtor and
being a former mortgage broker I couldn’t
stop myself from throwing a couple
pennies worth of opinion their way. Pretty
soon, I was a part of the conversation.
Jamie and Sean, it turned out,
actually had dated once upon a time, but
it didn’t work out. They have been friends
ever since though, and I understood that
completely being great friends with one of
my ex’s as well. They ended up staying
for the better part of my shift. And as the
afternoon wore on - and Jamie’s alcohol
blood level increased - she turned her
attentions more and more towards me.
Everything we talked about just
seemed to click and when the end of my
shift came I stayed on a little longer so
we could keep talking. She loved dogs,
I love dogs. She loved kayaking, I love
kayaking. The list of common grounds
was piling pretty fast.
Did I mention she was gorgeous, had
a great job and owned her own house?
The clincher was when she told me
her last name. I immediately flashed
back to first grade when a classmate with
the same last name told me a story about
her ancestry. It just so happens that both
these girls were, at least by name, related
to the first king of Ireland. Apparently
they decided to hold a boat race to
determine who would be king. Makes
perfect sense…can’t run a country if you
don’t know how to tie a square knot!
As the story goes, Jamie’s ancestor
was about to come in second. Knowing
that the first to touch shore would be the
winner, captain shamrock cut off his own
hand and threw it to land and won the
race, the day and his own country.
I hadn’t thought of that story in
tweny years. When I was finished, the
girl was flipping out. She said her family
had been telling this story as long as
she could remember. Her parents even
have the family crest, complete with a
depiction of the severed hand, hanging
on their living room wall.
I think it’s amazing that a story
someone told to me when I was a kid
sealed the deal in getting me a number. I
owed that little girl from first grade a big
thank you. So the next day I found her on
facebook, living in Germany, and I told
her so.
By the time she left, Jamie had given
me her cell number, her office number
and her email address. I played it semi
cool, but inside I was stoked to have met
someone with potential.
Did I mention this one was even my
age?
After work I met up with my brother
and some close friends for a 2 or 7 postwork beers. I relayed the days events in
detail to my audience and proudly stood
on my barstool to toast the entire bar
with my news. I know it may seem sad
to you, dear reader, but as of late I have
found myself dating women slightly
younger than I would hope for. So, this
was indeed a time to celebrate.
I even decided to break guy code
and text her that same night. It worked,
she was still into it and we talked about
going out soon.
That was Friday.
Saturday I woke up still warm and
fuzzy thinking about what was to come
in the near future. I had a gig at a private
party that afternoon, so
I packed up and went.
The gig was fun and the
weather was beautiful.
After a while I took a break
and decided to make “the
call”. You know the one.
Don’t pretend like you
don’t. After meeting a
girl who gets drunk while
you’re talking, it’s always
a throw of the dice to see
if they will remember
how much they liked you
the night before. It’s a
gamble for sure, but you
never know the outcome
until you make “the call”.
“Hi, this is Jamie.”
“Hi, this is Matt.”
“Matt? Oh yeah,
from yesterday. Hi, how
are you?”
“I’m good. Just
going on break…thought
I’d call and say hello”
“On break?”
“Yeah, between sets. Playing a gig
today in St.Cloud, remember?”, crossing
my fingers.
“Umm…did you tell me you play an
instrument of some kind?”
The conversation went pretty much
like that. Me trying to spark some
recognition and her apologizing for
not remembering because she had been
drunk. We did, however, talk about
hanging out and she asked me to call
her the next day. We hung up and I went
back to work.
I waited a couple days this time
before I made my next call, and even
then I traded in my courage for texting.
It went…ok. Short, to the point answers
and long waits in between. All sure signs
of disinterest, but because I still believed
in the potential, I was ready to hang
on just a little longer just in case I was
falling prey to my own imagination and
not the dreaded “brush-off”.
The next day I decided to actually
call. Voicemail. Left a message which I
try never to do but did. And that was it. I
never heard from that girl again.
So what happened? I wish I could
say this is an isolated case, but it’s not.
When all I cared about was quantity, I did
very well for myself. But ever since I’ve
tried to grow up and be a “real” person, I
fail miserably. This is a good story to tell
you though, because even though I was
passed over it’s hard for me to believe I
did much of anything wrong. I never had
a chance to.
You can never be sure of what’s
going in someone else’s life. Keeping that
in mind, it’s never a good idea to jump to
conclusions about why things like this
happen. The best we can do is just accept
that it wasn’t meant to be and move on.
The reality of everything in the romantic
realm is that nothing ever works. Until it
does. Don’t lose heart. Don’t lose faith.
And above all, don’t stop believing that
you are a unique, amazing person and
somewhere out there is somebody that
knows it. A good friend gave me that
advice and I always keep it close. Sure
it sounds a bit self-helpish, but it works.
Give it a shot.
Cheers!

“Open Fire” Lead Singer Passed Away
Showcase And Benefit Concert
For Joey - He Was One Of US!
T
hey were having the best time of their lives when
tragedy struck. The band Open Fire, a rock band
from Palm Bay, had just been nominated as one of five
bands to win the Brevard Live Music Awards as the
“Entertainer of the Year 2009”. They were so exited
that bass-player John had called the BL-offices at the
end of May to find out exactly when the mags would hit
the street. The band-members, John, Mike, Joey, and
Eric, were hyped up and their fans were determined to
follow them around, vote for them and help them to
receive the highest regional music awards.
The news spread on Saturday, June 13th. Joey Vutano had passed away. Suddenly. Unexpected. Yes, he
has been a life-long diabetic and had been very ill a
few years back. A kidney transplant saved his life. But
everything seemed under control now.
Joey left his 8-year-old son behind, who also suffers from diabetes. A showcase and benefit concert will
be held August 8th at Siggy’s in Palm Bay.

A Story Of Lasting Friendship
“Open Fire was Joey’s band,” said guitarist Eric Hoton. “He was the one who brought the band back together in
2008.” The lineup consisted of original members Joey V. ,
Eric Hotton and Mike Cote and newcomer John Ragozino.
They played the music they loved - the best of classic and
modern rock from bands like Whitesnake, Led Zeppelin, Van
Halen, AC/DC, Journey, 3 Doors Down, ZZ Top, Lynyrd
Skynyrd, Buckcherry and more. Their hard pounding music
fronted by Joey’s amazing vocals soon made them a must
see band.
But this wasn’t their first time around. The story of
Open Fire is also a story of rock’n rollers and their lasting
friendship.
It was 1991 when Open Fire came together. The line-up
at that time was Joey V (vocals), John Ashley and Eric Hotton (guitars), Scott Ryder (bass), and Mike Cote (drums).
They found each other because John and Eric attended
high school together, John knew Mike, Mike knew Scott,
and Scott knew Joey. From the beginning, the band was
based more on friendship than just playing music. Yes, they
worked up sets of music and performed for audiences (and
they won the Power Station’s “Battle of the Bands” contest
that year), but they also had regular band cookout and gettogethers. After a year, John and Scott left the band, and
Open Fire morphed into Dirty Trix and performed over 100
shows in 1992. Then they called it quits. Joey decided to
dedicate more time to his family and the remaining musicians took other bands’ offers. One thing didn’t change, they
remained best of friends Though all but Joey were performing in different bands, the entire gang continued to hang out
regularly and celebrate all the holidays as a “family”.
But in 2003 Joey had a dramatic decline in his health,
and a benefit was held on April 27th to raise money for his
mounting medical expenses. The original Open Fire line-up
(Joey, John, Eric, Scott, and Mike) reunited for the event
and performed a full set. Joey would spend the next few
years receiving and recovering from a much-needed kidney transplant. After stints with Sleeping With Sybil, Never
Leaving, and Ryz, drummer Mike and guitarist Eric found
themselves without a band in 2008.
Joey’s health had improved and he felt strong enough
to suggest another formation of Open Fire. Mike and Eric
had performed with John Ragozino, a talented bassist, and
felt John would be fit perfectly. Open Fire hit the night club

scene and consistently set audiences
alight with their energetic and heartfelt performances. “People could tell
we were more than just a bunch of musicians thrown together to make money. We were best friends, family, and
there to celebrate our musical reunion
by performing the music we love,” said
Eric.
Open Fire will go on. “The Vutano
family, our fans, and many area musicians have expressed their desire for
Open Fire to continue on”, stated Eric,
Mike and John. The band has begun
auditions... not for the world’s greatest
singer, but for someone genuine to join
their “family of friends”.
As for their nomination as Enter-
tainer of the Year 2009: “We’re going
for it all the way”, said John. Some gigs
might be canceled this month, but Open
Fire is playing the BMA-Showcase
with the help of musician friends on
Saturday, August 8th, 9 pm at Siggy’s
in Palm Bay which also functions as
a benefit. The bar is putting together a
benefit bike run on Saturday afternoon
with stops at Mr Tony’s, Longdoggers,
Malabar Mo’s and Shady Oaks. Live
entertainment by Medusa, Modern Day
Giant, The Day After, Perfect Tuesday
then Open Fire. All proceeds go to the
Joseph Vutano Guardian Fund at Bank
of America to help Joey’s son with the
cost for his diabetes.
Showcases For Entertainer of the Year Nominees
W
hile the summer months are traditionally slow in Florida with
fewer shows and events, you might
want to find out more about the bands
that so many readers nominated to be
the “Entertainer of the Year 2009”. And
keep in mind that this is a popularity
contest. It’s about promoting the bands
and getting the fans exited. Brevard
Live Magazine will feature 4 showcases this year where you can pick up
an extra ballot to vote that night, show
your support for the band, and we will
have tickets for the BMAs available.

• Green Light will perform at Crickets
Sports Bar on Friday, July 31st.
• Switch will be (for the first time) at
Mister Tony’s on August 1st.
• Open Fire will perform at Siggy’s on
August 8th.
• Chain Reaction will be perform at
Lou’s Blues on August 15th.
(The fifth band decided to decline
the nomination and participation in the
Brevard Live Music Awards. Therefore there will be 4 nominations in 4
categories this year.)
The Brevard Music Aid, Inc.
hile the Brevard Live Music
Awards are an event that is produced by Brevard Live Magazine with
the help of our local music scene and
our sponsors, the proceeds of the event
go to the Brevard Music Aid Inc.,
a non-profit organization that helps
members in our local music community in catastrophic events. This fund
was created so the Brevard Live Music
Awards could become a way to “give
back.” In the past year the Music Aid
has been able to help three local musicians in very difficult times.
Funds are limited since the organization is fairly new and the Awards
Show has been the only fundraiser at
this time. More events are planed for
the future.
We want you to know that every
cent of the ticket sale for the Awards
Show will benefit the Music Aid along
with other proceeds. Therefore you
will support our music community in
more than one way.

Back in Black is the 6th studio album by Australian hard rock band AC/
DC, released on July 25th, 1980. Back
in Black was the first AC/DC album recorded without former lead singer Bon
Scott, who had died at the age of 33 on
February 19th, 1980. The band considered disbanding following Scott’s
death, but then decided to continue and
shortly thereafter hired Brian Johnson
as their new lead singer and lyricist.
Producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange,
who had previously worked with AC/
DC on Highway to Hell, was brought
in to produce. It sold an estimated 45
million copies to date, making it second only to Michael Jackson’s Thriller
as the best-selling album of all-time as
well as the best selling album ever released by a band.
Classic Albums Live Concert Series presents classic rock albums each
performed by a hand picked cast of
musicians & vocalists specific for each
performance. This is not a tribute band

rhythms, sultry sax, and seductive vocals.
In 2003, her CD, It Just Happens That Way debuted in the Top 5 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart and remained in the Top 10 for 19 consecutive
weeks. She was also named Best New Artist at the 2003 National Smooth Jazz
Awards.
Her 2004 release Come As You Are debuted at #5 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz charts. Her 2006 release Life Less Ordinary debuted #1 on the
Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart and remained in the top 20 for 45 weeks.

Stars broke the usual genre barriers, with her single “Stars” charting #29 Adult
Contemporary R&R simultaneously with her single “Smile” hitting top ten on
the R&R jazz airplay charts.
Mindi Abair has been around. You’ve seen her open for Josh Groban, also

in Cocoa Beach
18 - Brevard Live July 2009
O
nce upon a time, about two decades ago, Brevard County had a
vibrant alternative music scene. Our college station WFIT 89.5
FM broadcast music that was anything but mainstream, and traditional
tunes were played in specialty programs. Young bands like Dead Serios
and The Scoobeedoos were drawing huge crowds playing big stages all
over Florida. Then it was over. Clubs were looking for dance music and
classic rock, and WFIT went back to a format that was supported by
paying sponsors rather than young listeners. The alternative scene went
back to where it came from, the underground where it is flourishing
with eternal youth and fresh tunes in places that only “insiders” know.
The Chili Pepper in Cocoa Beach
is one of those places where sound
and light have priority over comfortable seating and attentive service. As
a matter of fact, during the big shows
it’s “standing room only” since the
room holds just 146 people. But the
bands that play at the Chili Pepper are
unique, and chances are you won’t find
them anywhere else in this county. Bop
Gun is one of them.
The fusion of soul, indie-rock,
jazz, funk, gospel and whatever else
Bop Gun conjures, gives light to a
sound they call Alternative Soul. In
less than a year, their unique expression has captivated Central Florida.
In the beginning of last year Peter
Zaccheus Baldwin (then only 19) appeared on the scene and attracted attention with his acoustic guitar, intriguing
lyrics and soulful voice. Bop Gun was
Brevard Live
born when Peter joined forces with George Ponce, one of
the youngest, most staunch bass players ripping the Orlando
underground. One month later keyboardist Jason “Jet Plane”
Jones joined the band along with drummer John “junblaze”
Rodriguez. Since then Bop Gun has managed to climb to the
forefront of Central Florida’s music scene headlining The
Social, opening up for U.K. soul/pop star Joss Stone at Hard
Rock Live, a debut at the Virgin Megastore Downtown Disney, rocking two stages at this year’s Florida Music Festival
and performing at Full Sail University (which they know
well from studying there).
“Currently the bulk of our shows have been in the O, but
we have showcased at St. Mary’s College of Maryland and
we have a show coming up at Smith’s Olde Bar in Atlanta,
July 22nd. Now that we have established a formidable fan
base, we are focused on booking out of town,” said band
manager James “Tru” Truitt.
Bop Gun will perform July 31st for the second time at
the Chili Pepper Club. Owner Robbie Deuterman is exited.
“I heard the band for the first time at The Social. Then I
booked them for my birthday party.”
We’re not selling alcohol.
We’re selling our music.
Algorithm is another alternative band that played last
month at the Chili Pepper and has a gig coming up at The
Hustler on July 3rd. They are not quite as young but just
as dedicated to original music. This Brevard “metal band”
(modern metal, not heavy metal) was formed last year and
is working hard of gathering a fan base. Lead guitarist Dan
Cannon has played in other alternative bands like Chokehold and Who Was I. He explained: “We’re not selling alcohol. We’re selling our music. It’s the younger crowd that
we want. They’re out looking for a new vibe. And we’re
into creating it.” Dan has been a “junkie” for original music
since he can remember. “I used to go to the old Powerstation at age 14 to see bands”, and he was wearing a wristband
because he was under age.
In case you wonder about the difference of heavy metal
and modern metal, Dan explained that too: “Heavy metal is
based on rock and blues, modern metal is based on classical
music. It’s the theory.” - Now you know.
Deuterman has become a fan as well. Once the owner
of Goombay’s in Satellite Beach where he served innovative
food along with island sounds, he now features professional
shows and alternative music. “It sells better”, he said, “but
it’s also a lot of hard work.” His work is the production of
shows with an average of three bands per night on Friday
and Saturday night, two locals and one touring band. Like
Her & Kings County who opened for Kid Rock and Charlie
Daniels.
Every band has a different deal and the admission has
to be carefully calculated to make it a successful business.
Tickets run from $7 to $25, and “that’s usually $5 cheaper
than in Orlando. Some shows are free.”
Promotion is Essential
Since these bands are known to the “underground” but
still trying to gather more audience, promotion is essential.
Bands and venues are getting “the word out” on the internet,
with posters, flyers etc. - all on a much smaller budget than
mainstream. Meaning, Deuterman and dedicated helpers
are running all over town and doing a lot of footwork every
week to advertise the upcoming shows. That’s one reason
that made The Chili Pepper a true “Hot Spot” for alternative
music in this county.
Admission is 18 and up, younger music fans have to be
accompanied by their parents. For more info call The Chili
Pepper at 321-783-8885 or go to myspace.com/thechilipepperclublive to see the line-up. For those musicians who
want to get some stage experience, The Chili Pepper Club
offers an open mic every Wednesday night starting at 9 pm.
And to all alternative musicians - this is how most of them
got started.

Wolf, Jimi Hendrix and Muddy Waters to name a few. Today those influences come through in Sean’s style of play
and stage performance both instrumentally and vocally.
In 1998 Chambers was asked to fill in as Hubert Sumlin’s guitarist at The “Bluesstock” Festival in Memphis,
TN. The two hit it off amazingly well and had a unique and
obvious chemistry together. Chambers would find himself
acting as Sumlin’s guitarist and band leader for the next
four years, performing at festivals and clubs in most of the
major markets around the U.S. as well as touring overseas
with Sumlin. After his time with Hubert, (“His school”
as he calls it) guitarist Sean Chambers headed out on his
own, releasing two critically acclaimed cd’s and garnering
recognition as one of the top blues rock guitar players in
the country. In 2001, Britain’s Guitarist Magazine named
Sean as one of the 50 Greatest Blues Guitarists of all time.
Pretty heady for someone still in his early thirties! If you
like your blues blazin hot, this trio will definitely light
your fire!

T
he Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is a four-day,
multi-stage camping festival held on a beautiful
700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee every June.
Bonnaroo brings together some of the best performers in rock and roll, along with dozens of artists in complementary styles such as jazz, Americana, hip-hop,
electronica, and just about any contemporary music.
In addition to dozens of epic performances, the festival’s 100-acre entertainment village buzzes around the
clock with attractions and activities including a classic arcade, on-site cinema, silent disco, comedy club,
theater performers, a beer festival, and a music technology village.
Sounds familiar? Matt and Tim Bretz were there!

DAY ONE

USA Live
I
By Matthew Bretz (Text) and Tim Bretz (Photos)
was lying in the back of my brother’s truck staring at the
doomsday style clouds over head. I remember wondering for half a second, if it was worth all the trouble. I had
been awake for nearly twenty-four hours and, by the time
I would sleep, that total would rise well above forty-eight.
Only half a second though. The other half was bludgeoned
by my brother booming my name, bringing me back in an
instant from the half-sleep, half-awake coma I was drifting
in and out of. “It’s time!”, I heard him say just before the
sound of my head jolting against the side of the truck bed.
We left Florida at five o’clock in the evening on a
Wednesday. We arrived in Manchester, Tennessee, around
three in the morning and parked outside Fantasy 101.5FM
to wait for media check in, collect our press credentials and
continue on to Bonnaroo, the biggest and best music festival of the year. It was now eight in the morning and we had
been there over five hours with no passes to behold.
By the time the passes were sent and we were processed
through we had waited nearly eight hours. Two more hours
and we were finally able to set up our camp site…in the
rain. Then it all got better.
This year, Bonnaroo is home, for an extended weekend, to over 90,000 people of all shapes and sizes. The line
up is so varied, the festival attracts representatives from a
slew of cultures, the most prominent of course being granola flavored, sandal wearing, tie-dying, herbalicious, jam
bander hippies. We’re talking the Beastie Boys, delta Spirit, Snoop Dogg, Ani Difranco, Elvis Costello…even Bruce
Springsteen…the list goes on and on and on.
Besides the music there is so much to do, it would be
impossible to do it all in the four short days you have to
play. There are art shows and film fests, karaoke halls and
- the most unique concept I’ve ever seen - the silent disco.
This is where a live DJ is spinning and cutting up the wax
and everyone is dancing…only you can’t hear any music
unless you are wearing special wireless headphones. From
the outside, it’s one of the funniest and weirdest things I’ve
ever seen, especially when people start singing along. But
once you put the headphones on, you get it and the groove
starts working on you. In the middle of…well…the middle
there is an enormous black and white mushroom that stands
about 40 feet high. Said mushroom is actually a huge fountain to cool off and play in. It also serves as the only shower
most of the temporary residents will get to have during the
course of the day.
Walking around, getting my feel for the place, I was
amazed and bewildered at the sheer size of the compound
(700 acres) and the vast array of shops and vendors. You
could buy virtually anything on this hippie black market.
Jewelry, tie-dyes, cowboy hats, any kind of pipe you can
imagine (for tobacco use only of course), puzzle boxes, incense, art… I myself bought a necklace made from an 18
million year old shark tooth. Anything!
Our camp site turned out to be about 2 miles from the
main event. The walk there was already taking its toll on
my sleep deprived body, but I had to push on. Once we got
ourselves to the middle of the event, known as Centeroo,
we had to find some live music. It didn’t take 5 seconds.
Eric Baker was taking one of the stages just as we arrived and began crooning out his bevy of romantic, poppy,
acoustic folk. It was good and his lovely voice ensured tons
of female presence, but I was way too tired to stay for the
whole show.
After some food, rest and a few well deserved beers,
I wandered into a White Rabbits show. Fan-flippin-tastic!
Those guys were great. If you haven’t heard of them, think
the Fray meets noisy guitars and huge high school drum
line style percussion. Half way through their third song the
power went out in the venue. Without missing a beat the
entire crowd, myself included, starting clapping out the
rhythm for them. They never stopped playing, even though
we couldn’t hear them, and when the power was restored,
the song was right in line where it should be. I leaned forward and whispered to one the 45,000 gorgeous girls on the
farm, how awesome I thought what just happened was. She
turned around and asked if I wanted to see Bruce Springsteen with her the next night. I love the White Rabbits!
Delta Spirit is one of my favorites when it comes to
new bands on the scene, and I really wanted to stay for
their show, but it was getting dark and I knew I needed to
be responsible and get my work done. I started the long trek
back to my campsite to collect my lap-top and take a baby
wipe shower. Everywhere around me the camp was getting
its second wind. Tired as I was, I could tell my night was far
from over.
Just before I sat down in the press tent to type this story
out, I went to the media dining hall to get a bite. I sat down
at an empty table and began to eat alone. Almost instantaneously I was joined, nearly by force, by five new dinner
mates…none of which I had ever met. Through conversation I learned that these gents were the managers of some
very high profile bands. Over dinner I used every last bit of
charm and wit I could muster to procure future interviews
and feature story rights with said bands. I’d tell you who
they were, but I don’t want to ruin the surprise.
It’s been a pretty great day here at Bonnaroo and the
night life is just starting to kick into gear. Later tonight I’m
going to catch the first of two two and a half hour sets by
the newly reunited Fish as well as a comedy set by the secretary of sarcasm, Jeneane Garafolo. Tomorrow I get to attend her press conference.
I’m doing a lot of things tomorrow actually…including watching performances by Bruce Springsteen (I’ll let
you know how the date goes), the Beastie Boys, Al Green
and Elvis Costello. But that’s all for you to read about next
month. It’s just gets better from here, so stay focused!

The Column
By Chuck Van Riper
The Charlie Brown Syndrome
(Is it time to kill Lucy?)
Recap: O.K., so we give the big banks a few hundred
billion dollars to bail them out of the mess THEY got
themselves into. This is done with supposed tax payer
dollars (I still don’t get that!), which were just printed up
out of thin air by the FED. More than 70% of the American
people were against this plan, but it was implemented
anyway. These billions of dollars were supposed to go
to help out people who got ripped off by the greedy-ass
mortgage companies and greedy- ass loan companies and
stock brokers and the like. It was also supposed to open
up the credit markets, which are essentially frozen. The
banks were told new regulations will be put in place so
this crap won’t happen again. That means more oversight
and transparency in dealing with insane investments and
credit swaps, etc. Then another trillion dollars or so was
put into the system because these institutions are “too big
to fail”. The banks threw parties and gave themselves
huge bonuses.
So every start of football season, Lucy holds the ball
and says to Charlie Brown; “Come on, Charlie Brown,
kick the football! I promise I won’t pull it away at the
last minute. I won’t do that this time.” Invariably, the
reluctant Charlie Brown goes to kick the ball and Lucy
pulls the ball away at the last minute. Charlie Brown lands
flat on his back and Lucy laughs hysterically.
Since the bailout, the banks have spent millions
lobbying Congress not to implement any of the restrictions
that they agreed to when they took the money. They do not
want transparency in their dealings with OUR money. They
are now actually coming out and saying that everything
is fine just the way it is. They do not need or want any
oversight or regulations. Everything is just hunky-dory
the way it is. As if to say, “We won’t pull the football away
this time! Really, just trust us!” Are you frigging kidding
me!!!!
Keep in mind that the ONLY motive of any corporation
is profit, profit and more profit. At all costs! These banks
don’t really care who they harm in the process, just as
long as the bottom line keeps expanding. These same
people, who ripped off trillions of dollars at the expense
of millions of American citizens, are at it again. They now
have new money in their coffers from the bailout, a large
sum of which is then used to line the pockets of CEO’s
24 - Brevard Live July 2009
and lobby congress not to do anything about it! Will
we be a nation of Charlie Browns? Will we once again
end up flat on our backs as we miss the ball yet another
time?
Meanwhile, Lucy’s twin sister, the “Health Care
Industry” is lobbying very hard right now to not get a
“single payer” plan enacted. You see, “single payer”
refers to a government backed system, kind of like
Medicare is. The industry is so afraid that so many people
would prefer this less expensive system, that it would
seriously cut into their profits and ability to legally extort
the big bucks from the people. Again, keep in mind
these “health care” lobbyists don’t give a crap about
your health. I think this is kind of obvious when you see
all the new drugs advertised and the “side effects may
include” are way worse than the symptoms! And why
can’t we get drugs from Canada anymore. Are they just
pharmaceutical morons who make bad products? A good
friend that I grew up with died a few months ago from
Hepatitis because the cure they use in Europe wasn’t
approved by the FDA here! And what good is insurance
with a deductible so high I can’t afford it anyway. We
really DO need change!
So once again, do we really trust the corporations,
or end up, literally, flat on our backs? Talk to you local
and state legislators. Start writing letters and making
phone calls. I want my money back and I want decent
health coverage for all! I want our representatives to
start representing and stop allying with lobbyists! I
want banks that screw up to fail! In order to alleviate the
abhorrent greed that has permeated the ruling factions of
OUR democracy, WE MUST KILL LUCY!
“The Pied Piper” At The Henegar Center

he Henegar Center for the Arts presents its annual
full scale summer children’s theatre production of
“The Pied Piper” of Hamelin from July 23rd through

Drag Me To Hell
Starring: Alison Lohman, Justin Long, Lorna Raver
Rated: PG13
Running Time: 100 Minutes
irector Sam Raimi, who made all 3 Spiderman films,
returns to the horror genre with this delirious little
freak show. This movie takes you on a thrill ride that has
no brakes. The sights and sounds that he has orchestrated
helps position this scare-fest highly on the Thrill-O-Meter.
Some of it is quite preposterous and cartoonish. This is no
surprise as the famed filmmaker has never been known
for his seriousness. Lohman (Matchstick Men) portrays a
cute blond lass named Christine. She is a loan officer who
refuses to renew the mortgage of an old one-eyed, rottentoothed gypsy woman named Ganush (Raver). The old
hag places a nasty curse on Christine for shaming her. The
curse torments the young woman and claims she will die
in 3 days, being dragged to hell as a result. The main factor
of this curse has to do with the Lahmia, the black goat of
evil, whose foul beastly spirit desires to bring about the
demise of Christine’s soul. Quick-edited actions, images
and thoughts ensue, but the one constant vision is the
old woman herself. Ganush dies and is buried, but keeps
popping up at inopportune times. She is a hideous creature
that just will not go away, or at least that’s what Christine
thinks. Raimi spreads on the supernatural pretty thick and
for all intents and purposes has crafted the wackiest terror
/ horror flick to come down the pike in many a moon. B+

Taking of Pelham 1 2 3
Starring: Denzel Washington, John Travolta,
John Tortura & James Gandolfini
Rated: R
Running Time: 105 minutes
n this entertaining and exciting film, director Tony
Scott has retooled the very cool 1974 original which
starred Walter Matthau & Robert Shaw. Once again Scott
has included all of his movie-making trademarks such
as constant camera action, high speed editing, slow mo
techniques and booming soundtrack. The man who made
Top Gun, Crimson Tide and Man on Fire has come up with
a top-notch energized crime thriller. Oscar-winning heavy
weight Washington plays Walter Garber, a veteran MTA
worker in the Big Apple. He is working as a dispatcher
one fateful day when a subway train and its passengers
get hijacked by a gang of gun-wielding evil doers led by a
ruthless and murderous wacko named Ryder. Both actors
thrive off of each other as good guy / bad guy. Ryder
demands 10 Million dollars or he will start shooting
hostages. Garber is a level-headed regular dude doing
I

his job trying to communicate with Ryder, his deranged
counterpart who executes several hostages when payment
is late. Tick Tock says the doomsday clock as the 10 mil
draws closer to the hands of the lawbreakers. Denzel
is his usual efficient and low key self while Travolta is
over-the-top with his lunacy and foul language. Great
character actor Tortura as the NYPD hostage negotiator
and Gandolfini (HBO’s Tony Soprano) as the mayor give
the big stars some damn good support. See if you can
spot a Sopranos moment in the film. C
The Hangover
Starring: Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach
Galififanakis, Justin Bartha & Heather Graham
Rated: R
Running Time: 99 Minutes
he movie is being hailed as the sleeper hit of the half
year. This highly outrageous Vegas movie tells the
story of a groom to be and his groomsmen that have a
bachelor party only to wake up to discover they have no
recollection of their night of debauchery. Four regular
guys from the City of Angels are reminded of the saying
“Whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” except
they can’t remember the whatever part. They find out
they have been drugged and their hotel room has been
trashed. There is a chicken wandering the kitchen, a live
tiger taking refuge in the bathroom and a screaming baby
in the closet. And Doug the groom is missing. One of
them Stu (Helms) has lost a tooth but gained a new wife
(Graham). The infant in question belongs to her and, get
this, the tiger belongs to Mike Tyson. Raucous comedy
ensues as they try to retrace last night’s steps, hoping to
attain closure as the big wedding approaches. The film
is peppered with laughable bits that are amusing, not
hilarious. The cast is credible, especially Helms who
puts on a good horrified face and Galififanakis who plays
the Jack Black carmudgeon-type to the hilt. Overall the
Hangover stands as one of the funnier flicks so far this
year. B

Falcon’s River Roost
Benefit Concert
For Dale Thomas
The bad news: Dale Thomas, a
local musician, was burned quite badly
in an accident early in June. He spent a
week in the burn center at ORMC and
is still under out-patient care.
You may remember Dale from such
notable area Jams and open Mikes such
as Falcon’s Roost Tuesday night fiasco
or Big Daddy Dave’s Thursday blues
Jam and River Roost’s “Strummin
Sundays” just to mention a few, many
musicians have sat in on or used Dale’s
forums for exposure to receive gigs
and get their starts in the area.
The good news: A full recovery
with minimal scarring is expected.
The bad news: No insurance. As
with many musicians and hospitality
workers there just isn’t affordable
health care while working from hand
to mouth and payday to payday and
the doctors, nurses hospitals etc. want
to be paid too
The good news: The River Roost
is throwing a fund raising benefit to try
and offset some of the costs. On July
12th, starting at 1 o’clock, there will
be a concert of local bands followed
by an all star jam at the River Roost. The admission is free but donations
will be gladly excepted. There will
also be a BBQ, where all funds go to
the project, as well as 50/50 drawings
auctions and other cool things to do.
More 4th Of July Parties
You can stay in your backyard and
clean up afterwards. Or you can join
several BBQ parties around town.
• Siggy’s in Palm Bay is making a day
of it, starting the party at noon with car
& bike show, live music, party inside
and out, BBQ - and the best place to
watch the fireworks in Palm Bay.
• Off The Traxx in Downtown Melbourne has its first annual Pig Roast
and the music starts at 3 pm with Over
The Void, 7 pm Joe Oliver, 9 pm Vintage. There will be all the fixings you
ever want to have at a BBQ.
• The Cove in Satellite Beach has
a deck party with live bands, BBQ
chicken, dogs & burgers.
• Falcon’s River Roost in Merritt Island has an all day BBQ party with
fireworks and cornhole tournament.
• The Sandbar in Cocoa Beach starts
the party at 4 pm with the Mammoth
Band, and at 9 pm One. Good spot to
watch the fireworks.

What’s Hot (And New) In Historic Downtown Melbourne?
SUMMERY - Gauze cotton clothing is stylish AND keeps you cool.
The all natural cloth is completely machine washable, will not shrink and the
pieces keep you cool and dry. You can
find the comfortable, popular “Oh My
Gauze” line and other apparel at The
Gauzeway. Be sure to look for some
great new summer styles that fit right
in with the trends - and as always, they
come in petite, misses and plus sizes.
SIZZLING - Giftique is always updating their inventory of hot new items
like the “2006 Toy of the year” Ugly
Dolls. Popular with the Obama girls,
these dolls are soft and cuddly, cute and
ugly. Every doll comes complete with
an odd name like Turny Burny, Puglee,
Hidden Poe or Uglyworm and appeal to
boys and girls of any age. You can also
find Trollbeads, Spacepens, Tracksters

and Willow Tree sculptures.
STEAMY - Among the many services that Spa 902 is known for, they
have added a wonderful bamboo massage. Bamboo contains natural silica,
which makes up quartz, evoking the
energy of crystals during the treatment
(hot or cold) drawing up toxins in the
body. Also, they now offer acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, manual
therapy, food therapy, exercise therapy
and more by appointment. It is considered all natural healthcare for acute
and chronic illness or injury of adults
and children.
RED HOT - Artwork and clothing
do go hand in hand and the owners of
the brand new Slow Gallery & Fashion appreciate both. On the cutting
edge of fashion and art, Slow offers
unique and hard to find brands for men
and women at a portion of the price as
well as a display of unique works by
talented artists.
SMOKIN’ - is the new lounge in
town and it’s proving to be a refreshing
hot spot. Vapor Social Club is finely
decorated and equipped with lots of
comfy sitting areas and couches. They
serve wine, beer and champagne and,
of course, a wide selection of hookah
flavors. It can’t get more relaxing than
that.
FIREY - Downtown Melbourne’s
own steakhouse, The Firehouse Restaurant and Lounge serves a fantastic
lunch and dinner with inside or outside
seating. Succulent grilled specialties
grace the menu and the hand-crafted
decor is magnificent. Be sure to catch
their happy hour with some great drink
specials and good times for all.

Getting “Crowned”
On The Beach
Y
ou don’t have to be a Rockefeller. Neither
do you have to pretend to be one. Despite
the fact that the Crowne Plaza in Indialantic is a
4 star hotel, you find people dressed in shorts and
flipflops. “That’s because we’re on the beach,” is
the simple explanation from Tom Poehailos, GM
at the “Crowne” as the locals fondly call it. The
atmosphere is “classical relaxed” with the most
gorgeous ocean deck that has become once again a
hot spot in Brevard County. So, besides the chances
of running into a Rockefeller, you might be seeing your friends, neighbors and colleagues having
a good time with music and other fantastic shows
like the Island Luau, a Hula & Fire Dancing Show
and Hawaiian Feast. To understand the role the
Crowne Plaza plays in our community, you have to
take a walk on Memory Lane:
It was the first big hotel on the beach in South Brevard,
then a Holiday Inn, built in 1979, and the next hotel up the
road was in Cocoa Beach. The Space Coast was still young,
and other businesses besides the Space Center had started
to move in. The management and staff of this brand-new
hotel were challenged to do the pioneer-work in a rather
laid-back community. In order to make it work they catered to all people, the tourists and locals, the corporations
and professionals. And it was the mix of people that made
the Holiday Inn a unique venue.
There’s Scott Sigman, now bell-captain, who’s been
there for 25 years. He started at the Holiday Inn Melbourne
Beach as bell-boy and just the other day he received the
“Associates of the Year Awards” from the TDC (Tourist
Development Council). Other employees have been here
“forever.” They remember the night club “Mister T’s,” the
old Tiki bar with a pool that let you swim into the lobby,
the Sunday Classics, and bikini contests. The locals embraced the venue and partied at the Holiday Inn Oceanfront on weekends. Then Jamakin Me Crazy came to the
ocean deck every Wednesday at 5 pm featuring great reggae bands. For years it was THE place to be, and the party
kept on going.
Then came the “quiet years” in the late 90’s: More
business and family attire, less party animals. “It was the
trend of the time,” says Jim Dexheimer.
Everything changed in 2004 with the hurricanes.

You know you
live in paradise
when you spend
time on the
ocean deck at the
Crowne Plaza.
It took 2 years until the hotel re-opened its doors as the
Crowne Plaza. But if you expected any aloofness, that was
far from the truth. Once again the remodeled ocean deck
became a hot spot for locals, along with guests that want to
feel like locals. And the prices are more than compatible.
There’s a Splash Deck Party every Tuesday with a
$5 happy hour buffet. Amazing smooth jazz concerts on
Wednesdays presented by The Groove radio - no admission.
A deck-party with dj and WA1A-radio personality Timmy
Vee every Thurday, and on Fridays the weekend starts at 5
pm. Saturday afternoon you can sit by the ocean and listen to Island music. Sunday afternoons are very local. Even
original bands are taking the stage - imagine that! - as long
as they fit into the relaxed deck atmosphere.
Over the past months the Crowne has offered an incredible “Bounce Back” program with a dinner menu starting at
just $9.95, happy hour specials, and a Staycation Package
that offers 2 nights at regular rate with 3rd night free. Or
you can stay 1 night at regular rate and get the second night
50 percent off.
Even large groups are not a problem. Just recently, the
Crowne hosted the annual DRS-picnic serving beer and hot
dogs. 1,200 people were accommodated between beach and
oceandeck. (And my friend Virginia who was one of the attendants told me they had the best time!)
Photos (2) by Mike Smyth
After another successful Luau the Crowne decided to add
another show on July 24th.
I am sitting with GM Tom and his assistant Jim (well,
it’s James - but we’re on the beach) in the restaurant reminiscing. Both have lots of experience in the hospitality business. “I started out as busboy, ”says Jim. “And I started as
dishwasher before I was promoted to busboy,” laughs Tom.

Florida CD Reviews
By Matt Bretz
A
few months back
I ran into Adam,
lead singer of local
groms the Twenty
Three Trees. I love
those guys! They play the chillest
vibe on the beach, throw great parties
and hang out with the hottest girls.
So when he asked me to review his
band’s CD I accepted with gracious
honor.
Then, earlier this month while I
was running a route for the magazine
making deliveries, I was passed a CD
by a hip-hop group doing something
a little more meaningful and positive
than a lot of what you hear these
days.
I have to say, doing reviews this
month was a treat. Thanks for sending
me great music to listen to. Keep it
coming!
Upon the Shore Line
Twenty Three Trees
Track one is actually titled
“Intro”, and it’s exactly what it says
it is…an intro. A ukulele is heard
over some lapping surf ‘upon the
shore line’ and two guys with salty
accents deliver a couple cheesy lines
about playing music because the
surf is down. Listen to it once and
then program your player to skip
ahead to track two. The vibe on this
entire album is what gets me. It’s so
rhythmic and relaxed I literally had
to kick off my shoes while I was
driving around listening. To be fair,
the guitar tone doesn’t change much
from song to song, but this is reggae
for sure and the best in this genre is
usually simple and free flowing. On
a couple tracks I got lost sometimes
trying to understand what Adam
was talking about in his lyrics, but
the rhythm and rhyme scheme more
than make up for it. Adam’s voice is
perfectly suited for this style and he
shows clear vocal strength when he
successfully attempts runs on songs
like “Reality” and “Wrecking Ball”.
Aaron Azar, Adam’s brother and the
Trees’ bassist, handles the low end
with an easy feel. His lines are simple,
but not corny and he stays tight with
drummer Mike Longman. Longman,
like his band mates, also takes a very
relaxed approach to his trade. There
isn’t a lot of diversity on this album,
but I honestly don’t think that’s what
they were going for. It’s hard to find
a band as completely in sync as these
guys. They share a single vision for
their music and that’s enabled them
to produce a very well presented
product.
My favorites were “Wrecking
Ball”, “2 for 1” and “Slippin Away”.
Da Tribe
Da Tribe
When I first started listened to
this CD, I was delightfully impressed.
The very track takes you to a new place
rhythmically and that’s not something
that happens very often in this genre.
Formula is the key to success. At
least, that seems to be what hip-hop
producers think. Keeping that in mind,
I loved the freshness and positivity
of most of the album. The beats are
tight, the melodies are crisp and the
swagger being spit by Da Tribe flows
with a familiar quality not unlike old
school Easy or new guy on the scene
FR. I even caught some Twisted in
there somewhere. But then, two third
of the way through this very long CD,
it turned on me. THEY turned on me.
The last third of CD is filled with songs
that talk about and promote violence
and gangsta rep campaigning. My
joy in finding rappers that didn’t feel
the need to talk about hurting people,
making money and using women was
completely destroyed. The guys are
actually great at what they do and the
recording is phenomenal. The content
is a matter of taste, so you will have to
make up your own mind about that.

Sun On The Beach:
Lazy Sunday With
The Grill Masters
By Charlene Hemmle
I
t’s that time of year to call your friends
and family, grab your beach chairs and
head over to Satellite Beach because on
Sunday afternoons Sun on the Beach
turns into a huge, backyard beach BBQ
complete with all the fixins. The family
owners Gil, Seth and Kent put on a great
party with lots of good food, drinks and
entertainment.
From 1 pm to 5 pm you can cozy up
under a shaded table with a refreshing beach view while listening to live music from popular local musicians. Then, order an
ice cold beer and chow down on some of their delicious down
home cookin’ - these guys are grill masters! Each week they will
serve up a different array such as BBQ, seafood boils, chicken
and other specialties.
Upon my last visit I sampled the ever-popular crawfish boil
complete with corn, potatoes, sausage and shrimp. The portion
was huge, and the crawfish and shrimp were large, juicy and
served with butter and a seafood “au jus” which really put them
over the top in succulence. They also offer other grilled options
like the biggest hot dog I have ever seen, easily shared by two.
I had a couple of beers and sat to listen to the original tunes
of 23 Treez. The weather was breezy, everybody was in a great
mood and the whole place had this laid back vibe. I talked to a
couple of people who visit each week to see what they are cooking up and who is performing. They mentioned how much they
enjoyed the casual atmosphere, tasty food and friendly people,
not to mention the view.
I’m always looking for somewhere
to take the entire
family and this is a
great Sunday spot.

Matt’s Casbah in Downtown Melbourne
A
New Fancy Building
Same Delicious Cuisine
mong the chefs, Matt is a rock-star! He has a
following in this county that some musicians
wish they had. And no matter where he goes, his
hungry fans go with him.
Matt was the chef of the legendary Wine Gallery on
the beach back in the days, before he opened his own place,
Matt’s Tropical Grill. His restaurant was well known for its
creative fusion cuisine. His flavors are unique and artistic,
just like his presentation. It’s “Original Food Art” and his
patrons understand that. But would they follow him over
the bridge, away from the beach, to downtown Melbourne?
The answer is YES!
When the 2004 hurricanes destroyed his restaurant,
Matt acquired the rather run-down building in downtown
Melbourne that once housed Pop’s Casbah known for its
simple blue-plate food. After years of tearing down the
walls and building a fancy restaurant in its place, nothing
reminds of Pop’s Casbah - but the name. Now it’s Matt’s
Casbah! (Looks as if Matt has a sentimental side.)
We came for lunch - and stayed to indulge. I did the
“Study in Tuna” which included the spicy tuna roll, tuna
nigiri and pepper seared tuna sashimi. My friend ordered a
salad with three different fish fillets. Every bite became an
experience, and that’s just what has made Matt’s famous for
decades. We even ordered dessert.
If you’re new to this county, discover one of Brevard’s
culinary treasures. If you haven’t been to Matt’s in downtown Melbourne, you’re missing out. His new place is just
as fancy and tastefull as the food.
W
Matt’s Got Night Life!
hen the sun sets, Matt’s patio cranks up. For once,
it’s the best light show in Brevard County (not counting the lasershows at the BCC Planetarium!). The changing
colors, the high and wavy ceiling, the outside bar and the
live entertainment set the mood for a south-beachy atmosphere. Honestly, if anyone would have told me 15 years
ago that we’re going to have a place like that in downtown
Melbourne, I would have said: Keep on dreaming!
Matt made his dream a reality - and it still looks like
a dream. You find all kinds of people there: Professionals
that want to relax, young people that want to go out in style,
couples, dates, and singles that are hoping to find a date.
Last time I went, I ran into Mayor Harry Goode. We started
talking, then decided to order a beverage and hang out for a
while. - It’s a Wonderful Life!

hen Linda Peters and Linda Schiegner took over The Cove
in September 08, they had some great new ideas for this
landmark restaurant. Or at least, they thought so. The remodeling
took about a month and during this time the phone kept on ringing. Concerned patrons called: “You’re not changing the Cove,
are you?”, was a frequent question accompanied with a light
threat: “You’re gonna lose all your customers!” - By the time the
Lindas opened the restaurant in October, they had learned one
thing: They don’t own the Cove - the Cove owns THEM!
While having plenty of experience running their own enterprises, the
restaurant business was new territory to both ladies. No problem, they were
ready to learn, and they learned quickly:
The bridge-ladies are coming at 9:30 am, and it doesn’t matter if the
restaurant opens at 11 am. They need “their” place and were here way
before the Lindas even thought about buying the Cove. Next rule: Don’t
change the music. It’s dance bands on weekends or bust! Liquid NRG was
put together by Joe Caluti many years ago for the sole purpose of playing
at the Cove - customized. Bobby Kelley, Ana & Gary - they are “musical
inventory” at the Cove.
The list of must-be’s and must-have’s goes on and on, and both Lindas
want to accommodate their customers. So they listened carefully, didn’t fix
what wasn’t broken, and made most of their improvements in the kitchen
and by remodeling walls and ceilings.
We visited the Cove on “Thursday Seafood Night” and ordered some
of their specials. The tuna sashimi appetizer was enough for two and simply delicious. For dinner we ordered a “surf and turf” special, a filet steak
and snow crab cluster, and a pasta dish with jumbo shrimp, sea scallops and
a grouper fillet - all so delicious you do want to write home about it. The
prices are amazingly reasonable - appetizers are under $10 and entrees cost
between $10 and $20.
Afterwards, we sat on the Cove’s lovely deck on SR A1A where it had
cooled down after a rain shower and listened to John Quinlivan who hosted
a jam with some of the area’s finest musicians. Lucky us - Jamie Rickett,
guitarist extraordinaire, showed up and took the stage with JQ. Awesome!

Italian Food and Live Music in Palm Bay
M
Who Is Mister Tony?
ister Tony, that is Anthony
Gugino. Italian, friendly,
likeable - he’s the big guy in the
photo above with his son Buddy
(left) and chef Mario (right). All
three men are working together to
make this restaurant a good place
to eat Italian food and a cool place
to hang out and listen to live entertainment. - That’s Mister Tony’s!
Tony comes from Buffalo, NY,
and has been working in the pizzeria
business since he was 12 years old..
In 1982 he opened up his own restaurant called “Carla’s Place” (after
his daughter). It was a success and
his wings were voted “Best in Buffalo”. In 1997, however, he acquired
another successful sales-business.
His plan was to open up another
small office in Brevard County, so
he could come here and play golf.
All that changed when Tony
decided to switch headquarters and
take over a restaurant on the.corner
of Palm Bay Road and Babcock
Street back in September 08. “I’ve
played golf exactly three times in
the past nine months”, he said.
In the kitchen you find Tony’s
son Buddy, who grew up in the busi-
ness and is the official owner of this
place, along with chef Mario, who
previously worked at the Malabar
Country Club, Samperton’s and The
Shack among others.
My friend tried a breast of
chicken with mushrooms and onions smothered in a brandied cream
sauce and mozzarella rice. Delicious! I ordered a veggie pizza very tasty. The menu includes subs,
lunch specials, entrees, wings, even
a fish-fry on Fridays.
The entertainment is just as diversified as the food - and Mr. Tony
is in charge of that. He built a nice
stage with sound and made some
friends in the music business featuring everything from jazz, blues,
bluegrass, and rock’n’roll. A lot of
fun are the cruise-in street parties
starting at 6 pm every Friday with
DJ Doc Holiday.
This month, on July 25th, there
will be a “Christmas in July” bike
run. All proceeds benefit “Kids without Christmas”. The bike run starts
at Wal-Mart in Viera going down

Out & About
Picking Up
The Bike
By Eroica Fedder
Over a year ago I cringed at the
thought of any major physical activity.
A
lot of things began to change in my life once I became active. For one, I was getting in shape, which
was great; but I also started eating better and toying with
the idea of quitting smoking. There were also other benefits
to this new way of living. I had a new circle of friends who
encouraged me to do more and I ended up having quite a
bit in common with one new friend in particular named
Sam. We started dating and that began a whole new avalanche of ideas and activities, as he is a fairly active person. I began to think seriously about quitting smoking,
which was a feat in itself. I’d been smoking for quite a
few years already and had never really wanted to quite
before. It’s been several months and I think I am doing
okay. My main weakness is when we go out and have a few
drinks and I might have one then, but for the most part, I
am smoke-free. It’s really improved every aspect of my life
- my health (of course) and my ability to breathe among
other things.
As I biked more, I became increasingly irritated with
my bike. Eventually Sam started to help me look at bikes
and figure out what kind was right for me. I went to bike
shops and tested out bikes: Specialized, Trek, Giants...all
of which were a Bentley to my current Nova. After much
debate, I became the proud owner of a Trek Fuel 8. Full
suspension makes a huge difference when you are riding
trail and I was ecstatic to have my new bike. I was soon
advised that if I was graduating in the bike world, I might
as well upgrade my gear. Clips have been the bain of my trail riding existence
for some time now. They have caused me great pain on
many rides...but I hear they are beneficial? My first mistake
was listening to a certain someone and going on an off road
ride through the palmetto ridden portion of the Wickham
Park trails to test out my new clips. Bad idea. If I told you
I crashed a couple of times it would be a major understatement. I obliterated myself. I’d hop on my bike, go
a few feet, hit a palmetto root and go flying off trail, bike
an all. For those of you who are not familiar with what
clips are, I will explain. Basically, you have shoes with
metal plates attached to the bottom and these metal plates
lock into the corresponding pedals. The benefits are never
slipping off of your pedals and getting more out of each
time you pedal. The downfall is that you have to get used
to being attached to your bike and train yourself to turn
your foot in the proper direction to release yourself before
you crash and burn. The latter part is proving quite difficult
for me to date. I’ve gotten some pretty stellar bruises and
scars and from what I hear, it’s not the end. For now I save
the clips for road rides, where I can better anticipate the
need for releasing, and wear tennis shoes off road. Eventually I will wear clips full time, but I want to make sure I
am completely comfortable with them first. Despite their
downfalls, they really do make quite a difference in the
way you ride.
As if biking weren’t enough in this new and strange
world of physical activity, I also started jogging. I never
really liked running, but Sam asked me to give it a try, so I
thought, sure...I’ve come this far, right? I honestly didn’t
think I would like it. At first, I hated it. It was torture. I’d
run a half a block and have to stop, panting and doubled
over in pain. I couldn’t breathe, my side ached and I had
no stamina, but once I stopped smoking, I found I was able
to breathe so much easier, so I ran farther and finally decided it was time to do my first 5k.
The Melbourne Art Festival 5k was the next run on the
calendar so I signed up and started training. I wanted to
run it without stopping and make a decent time. I’d never
continued page 53

Out & About
run the causeways before, so I went there a
couple of times and ran them to better prepare
myself. Before I knew it, it was race day. For a newcomer, the race atmosphere
is slightly euphoric. There are hundreds of
people there all ready to go. I quickly found
out that running with a crowd is completely
different than running solo. When you run by
yourself, you don’t have to worry about inadvertently plowing down the person in front of
you when they suddenly stop running. Fortunately for me and the others around me, I did
not experience that myself, but I did weave
through the crowd and pass people, which
was quite invigorating I might add.
So there I was, on the other side of the
causeway, totally pumped. I was halfway finished and going strong. My excitement gave
me more energy, so I think I ran up a tad faster
than I probably should have because by the
time I was halfway down the other side all I wanted to do
was stop running. I kept having to tell myself: just a little
further, don’t stop now, keep going. When the time clock
and finish line were finally in sight I saw the seconds fluttering toward 32 minutes. Everything in my head screamed
“NOOO!” I had a personal goal of 30 minutes, but 32
would have been okay too. But now that I had the power
to make it under that I sped up and ran over the finish line
in just under 32 minutes. I was a tad disappointed, but still
happy with it - it was still a 10 minute mile after all. Now
all of my attention was focused on the fact that I was light
headed and felt as if I could projectively vomit right that
very moment. I know I overexerted myself, but I had a great time
doing it. I never vomited, thank God, but I did make my
way to where all of the refreshments were and down some
water and a few orange slices, which made me feel like a
new woman. I also found out that the time on the clock did
not reflect my true time and it was probably about a minute
less, which I didn’t realize. For those who haven’t run a race
before, I will explain: you get chips to put on your shoes and
these chips are numbered and assigned to your name. When
you step over the start and finish line the chip goes off and
records your time and you get an exact, to the second time
for your run. Mine was 30:44. Woot!
Finishing that race was so exhilarating I’ve decided that
I want to do a half marathon within the next year. It will
definitely be a challenge, but I think it will be very rewarding as well. I will be sure to let you know how that goes.
There’s still more to the adventures of sporty me. Next
month I’ll be telling you about an amazing trek I went on
with Sam and a few friends through the Andes of Peru to
Machu Picchu. Until then I’ll be running, riding and trying
not to crash.

Bonefish Willy’s Customer Appreciation
H
as it been 10 years already? It seems like yesterday
when Terry Holt and Tina Quinn took over Bonefish
Willy’s, one of Brevard’s traditional river restaurants. That
was in 1999. On July 17, 18, and 19 they celebrate this anniversary by having a customer appreciation weekend with
give aways, live music, and lots of food and drink specials.
The food is consistantly good with popular seafood and
fish entrees along with chicken, steak, pork, and a raw bar.
And never leave without a piece of that Key Lime Pie.
Bonefish Willy’s has a beautiful deck over the Indian
River, a great view, and old Florida charme.

FedEx Lost Your Motivation Package?
by Lisa Cavallaro, MA
I
’m planning on doing that as soon as
I get motivated! Yup, as soon as that
motivation gets here, I’m doing that.
My announcement sounds really good
and usually I even have a plan to kick
into place once the FedEx guy drops
off my motivation package.
Well, I don’t know about your
FedEx guy, but mine keeps losing
that motivation package… and I’m
beginning to think it will never arrive.
Actually, that’s a good thing! As
I’ve recently learned, motivation really
isn’t something that happens to us. It’s
something we find ways to create for
ourselves.
Sure… it would be much easier
if suddenly we felt motivated. But
for those times when it’s just not
happening and we wish it were, I do
not recommend waiting.
The best way I know to feel
motivated is to think motivated
thoughts. “Yeah… Yeah… Yeah”,
you’re saying. You’ve heard this
before and tried it a few times, but it
never worked for you. Right?
If this process sounds familiar,
then my hunch is that your motivated
thoughts didn’t cause a motivated
feeling for one big reason… you say
you can’t find any proof for your new,
motivated thought. It would make
sense that we would think this. After
all, we know what our reality is and we
want to be truthful and call it like we
see it. But if we don’t have something
that we want, is talking over and over
again about its absence actually going
to bring it to us?
The answer, of course, is no… and
we can both think of things in our lives
that prove it. So why not try thinking
motivating thoughts again? What goal
would you like to reach in your life?
What thoughts could you think about
this goal that would cause you to feel
motivated?
If losing weight is your goal,
thinking that you can’t find the
motivation is not only going to cause
feelings of hopelessness and despair,
but it’s also going to create a result
of not losing the weight. On the other
hand, thinking that you have all that
you need and that you can learn how
to use it is going to cause you a more
hopeful feeling and will also cause you
to take actions that are more in line
with losing the weight.
So what if this method of attaining
our goals goes against what we’ve
been lead to believe since childhood?
As always, we do have an option
here. We can continue thinking and
believing what we know to be our
reality and keep getting ourselves
more of that same reality. Or we can
start thinking thoughts that will bring
us to our goals.
For me, the choice is a simple
one. I want to reach my goals and I’m
absolutely fascinated with my new
understanding of how to achieve them.
While action is a necessary component
to reaching my goals, I know that the
actions will come easier and count
for more if they’re preceded by goodfeeling thoughts.
I love how motivation feels. I love
feeling it run through my veins. I’m
happy to create intentional thoughts
that allow me this feeling. And I’m
also happy to let Mr. FedEx know that
he can keep the package. I know that
I can create motivation on my very
own… and no shipping charges!

Brett
Pigon
By Lou Belcher
I’ve always felt that it’s
a misconception that
engineers deal only in
black and white. Brett
Pigon is proof of my
theory. He not only
contemplates all the
possible grays, but he
brings the full color
spectrum to life in his
paintings.
56 - Brevard Live July 2009
P
igon grew up in Ohio. He says
that he always knew how to draw.
In school, when drawing was needed,
he would do it; but he didn’t sketch as
many artists do when they are young,
he didn’t pursue art, and he didn’t take
art classes.
Pigon’s start as an artist was an
unusual one. He attended Ohio State
University where he studied to become an engineer. While at home after his freshman year, he woke up one
morning and thought, “I think I’ll try
painting today.” He pulled out an old,
unused paint set his brother had given
him and started painting. He admits
that his first painting was not all that
great, but it was the start. Soon after
that, he painted a picture of the USS
Constitution. And then he painted
a mountain scene from a picture in
the National Geographic. Those two
paintings were good. In fact, he was
surprised by them and by the fact that
he seemed to have a natural talent for
mixing colors.
After college, Pigon was hired
by Harris and moved to Palm Bay.
He concentrated mostly on his career
and his family, but he taught himself
painting over the years by studying
the paintings of the old masters in his
spare time. Specifically, he studied the
works of Vermeer and Bierstadt. You
can see their influence in the rich colors and the use of light in his paintings.
Through studying the painters, critiquing paintings of the National Gallery
of Art, and through painting he has
developed his own style of painting.
By combining all these methods and
by using the engineer’s penchant for
detail, he has created beautiful works
of art.
Pigon admits that he is a contemplative person and he feels that this
has been an advantage when studying a scene for a painting. The natural
beauty in his own back yard inspires
him, as well as family, friends, pets,
and wildlife. He enjoys studying how
light reflects on a potential subject. He
looks at everything as an artist.
Pigon said, “I enjoy making paintings
Florida Art
for friends and family who I know will
treasure them.” He has painted cats
and dogs for friends. He even created
a painting of his brother in the full garb
of an English lord with the title, “Lord
Robert, Mighty Hunter.” First, he painted his brother, and then he painted the
hunting scene around him. It surprised
and delighted his brother.
Pigon has completed a large body
of work for someone who works full
time in the corporate world. One way
his work has helped his art is that he
has participated in the Harris Art Exhibit for years. This is a yearly event
where employees submit artwork and
compete for ribbons. Pigon’s painting
of Turkey Creek won Best of Show and
the People’s Choice awards in the Harris Art Exhibit.
The Turkey Creek painting also
won Best of Show in the Palm Bay
Millennium Art Show. The painting
is large at 80” by 29” and depicts portions of Turkey Creek in Palm Bay.
Within the painting, Pigon has inserted
at least 26 creatures, such as manatee,
woodpecker, heron, alligator, turtle,
etc., into the painting. He challenges
viewers to find all of them. The painting is a beautiful piece. It draws the
viewer into the lush colors of Turkey
Creek. This award labeled Pigon as the
“Artist of the Millennium” for the city
of Palm Bay. That’s quite a title to live
up to, and PIgon is doing just fine in
that regard.
Pigon is a member of the Strawbridge Art League and has entered his
work in the juried exhibits sponsored
by that organization. He had a piece in
the 2008 PaperWorks exhibit. He won
the John VanDyck Award for Oils in
their 2009 Vision juried exhibit for a
painting of his wife. Also, he won merit awards at the Titusville Art League
2009 Spring Art Show and at the Faces
of Brevard exhibit at the Strawbridge
Art League. The Titusville award was
his first award for watercolor. The winning painting is titled, “Morning Water
Lilies.”
Besides oil and watercolor, Pigon
Brevard Live July 2009 - 57
Florida Art
is busy perfecting his skills in other mediums. For this year’s Harris
show, he intends to submit an entry
in each of the following categories:
pastel, watercolor, photography,
oil, and acrylic.
When talking about the unusual way he discovered his artistic ability he said that most people
know the engineer, but he has
learned through his own experience
that there’s always more to people
than what is first apparent. He said
that people often say to him that
they wish they could draw. His response is, “How do you know you
can’t?” His theory is that everyone
has their own talent, but it doesn’t
come overnight. It takes time to develop it. Pigon has put in the time
and he continues to do so. Be sure
to watch for his future works.

One For The Road
Happy 4th of July!
By Joey Simao
T
his month we celebrate Independence Day known to
many of us as the fourth of July where we adopted the
Declaration of Independence declaring our independence
from Great Britain. I think we need a new Independence
Day declaring our independence from Obama and our
government. Most people will be celebrating the day
having picnics with families and friends, eating some great
food and tossing back a few cold ones. Obama, on the other
side, will be spending his day like he always does, trying
to take our independence and making us dependent on the
government.
The other day I was looking around on Youtube and
I came across a video of Obama at a golf course driving
range. He was looking as though he was a professional
golfer with the high dollar golf shirt and matching short set.
He had a designer golf hat on and he was swinging custom
fitted golf clubs. You can tell, he was getting ready to tear
up the course.
He confidently walked up and placed a ball on the
golf tee to begin his warm up before he went on to play his
scheduled eighteen holes. Obama being a left handed golfer
took his stance and got ready to send that little white ball
flying. He pulled the club back and then began his down
swing and smacked the ball a whopping three feet. The ball
barely came off the tee. The person video-taping this from
a distance said, “Damn he sucks.” However, Obama acted
as though that was exactly what he wanted the ball to do.
He then bent down and placed another ball on the tee and
confidently drew the club back and again the down swing
came. This time the ball went about eight feet, however, the
cell phone on his belt flew twelve feet. How the hell he did
that, I couldn’t tell but I was laughing my ass off. He then
walked over, picked up his cell phone as if he planned that
to happen. Obama believes if he can make the impression
that he knows what he is doing, then people just might
take him seriously. In this case he wanted people to think
that he is an accomplished golfer by acting as if he was.
He went through all the motions looking as if Tiger Woods
himself better watch out for Obama, then when he actually
completed the follow through, there was nothing. He was
left holding the club and looking like a dumbass.
The club he is now holding represents the United States
of America, and we all are looking like dumbasses. Every
new program or bill that he wants to sign in is only his
attempt to try to convince us he knows what he is doing.
Even Bill Maher, a known Obama supporter, Bush hater,
said during his HBO show that basically Obama is trying to
be a celebrity and that he needs to stop acting like president
and start being one. He said he needs to be a little more like
George Bush. You can hear it all http://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=HWulnfog20c.
I, for the life of me, cannot understand why he wants
to put America down while he visits foreign countries. Sure
we might not always have done the right thing but damn if
you are the leader of this country, please don’t talk us down
as though we are a red headed step child or worse his own
step brother that lives in a hut and likes to smoke a little pot
every now and then.
I am now thinking Obama has done us all a favor with
taking over GM and Chrysler. Does anyone need a new car?
With the tax payers now reportedly owning most of GM and
Chrysler does this mean we can go into any GM or Chrysler
dealership and demand to see the original invoice and buy
the new vehicle for exactly what the dealership paid for
vehicle? Why should we pay a dime more? It was our money
that is allowing them to stay open. We should all be allowed
to receive zero percent financing on all new vehicle and no
ones credit history should be brought in to play. Especially
now that we know GM and Chrysler’s credit is shot. How
dare they look at our credit history and tell anyone that they
will not finance them. They stiffed many creditors and there
will be more to come. I wonder how Obama will handle this
one.
If, for some reason, Government Motors fails, and
let’s face it, we all know there is a real good chance of
that happening, how does the government plan on paying
us back? You don’t think Obama would just take our
money without a plan to make sure we get it all back with
interest?
If I were you, I would begin going around to all the
GM and Chrysler dealerships in the country and introduce
yourself as their new owner because you and I are.
Obama please take a look at Playboy. Rumor has it they
are having financial troubles and I sure would like to get a
piece of that action.
