Inspired by the Seattle rock scene and
Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit, it was a
heady mix of street and high fashion, the
likes of which had never before been seen
on the runway. Shalom Harlow and Christy
Turlington modeled floral dresses, silk plaid
shirts and Converse sneakers made from
duchesse satin – the press went wild.

“His Grunge collection flipped the script.”
Music has always been central to Jacobs’
world, and his rise to the top has played out
to a soundtrack of musical greats. The video
for Sonic Youth’s hit single Sugar Kane was
shot in the Perry Ellis showroom during the
creation of the Grunge collection (Jacobs
and Chloë Sevigny
both made cameos),
while his first runway

to Amadeus and Purple

Bitter Sweet Symphony is the song everyone
associates with Marc and, as fashion moments
go, it was a powerful statement,” says Virginia
Smith, US Vogue’s fashion market & accessories
director, of Jacobs’ SS99 show. Then there was
the FW08 collection where models stepped out
to the beat of Jams Run Free played live by Sonic
Youth on the runway. In SS09, it was all about
Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue while the FW10
collection was brought to life by Juliette Gréco’s

What role does music play in
the studio? Four designers reveal
the tunes that inspire them
Richard Nicoll
“I want the
show to feel
the way the
music sounds”
What played in your studio
as you designed for fall?
A lot of music by the London-based
composer Daniel Lea, who created
my bespoke show music.
How important is music to
your creative process?
It can inspire the overall mood of my
collections. It acts as creative research
for me as much as visuals do.
What was the link between
the music and the clothes?
The collection was about freedom,
ease and comfort, and I used moths and
cocoons as a motif for that. The music
reflected the sounds of a moth breaking
free of a chrysalis and taking flight.
SHOP richard nicoll4
Alice Temperley
What were you listening to
as you designed for fall?
We had a mix of Leonard Cohen, Ray
LaMontagne, Warpaint, Bon Iver, the
Rolling Stones and some reggae. I love
playing a good song loud and just zoning
in on my work. It gives me focus.
How did the music complement
the collection?
You can see some rock’n’roll in there, as
well as softer, more romantic references.
What was the show soundtrack?
Adele, the Ting Tings, Parov Stelar and
The Knife. My husband Lars and I choose
the songs and our DJ mixes it into
something beautiful that suits the mood.

“I’m as magpie
with my music as
my clothes”
music to make clothes by
Roberto Cavalli
What music inspired the
new collection?
My fall ’11 collection felt very modern in
design and I created it with a confident,
fearless woman in mind. Strong women
inspire me. Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez and
Rihanna are all friends of mine whose music
focused my creativity for this new season.
Does music help you in
the creative process?
Music is in my blood and I find it
awe-inspiring how artists can transform
into alter egos on stage. This is a part
of fashion too – you can be whoever
you want to be.
Why did you use electro pioneers
Kraftwerk in your runway show?
It was a change in genre for me. The
collection was focused and futuristic,
which was encapsulated by Kraftwerk. It
reflected the clothes and atmosphere well.
SHOP roberto cavalli4
“Each look is fearless,
which relates to
the musicians I very
much admire”
How does music help your
creative process?
I listen to different genres depending
on my mood – lounge music to relax,
classical music to think and rock music
to recharge.
Did a particular song influence
your fall collection?
Adele’s Rolling in the Deep produced an
incredible energy within me and played
in my mind continually. The strength of
the music emulates the type of woman
I was bringing to the runway: feminine
but mostly self-confident.
What was the runway music?
Adele, and Hercules and Love Affair’s
Painted Eyes.

How to dress like a
Rock
Star
Debbie Harry is as famed for her wardrobe as her rock star
credentials. Stephanie Forrester meets the New York legend
D
ebbie Harry’s platinum locks,
sculpted cheekbones, seductive
pout and deconstructed disco
look defined the 1970s. Immortalized by
Andy Warhol and idolized by millions,
she had it all – sex appeal, charisma,
individuality. 40 years on, her image is
every bit as striking. Here, the Blondie
singer talks about her life in style.
The whole deconstructed look
is something I really like a lot.
New York in the ’70s taught me a lot
of things, I learned by osmosis – it was
like going to school. Initially it was about
experimentation and then it evolved when
I started working with Steve Sprouse.
Back in the early days we were
different to everyone else. Nobody
else was wearing ripped up stuff with
lots of paint smears. We were just the
opposite of what was going on in the
magazines. Nobody was wearing narrow
lapels or tight pants – we did it first.
Extreme style gets you noticed.
You can’t be afraid to make a statement.
Most people in my world are pretty clear
about what makes them who they are.

‘‘Extreme style gets you

to make a statement’’
debbie harry
It’s fundamental to be an
individual. You’re either highly criticized
or applauded – either way, it makes you
stand out.
My style says something about
my powerful nature. I’m conscious
of my appearance because I’m in the
entertainment industry. In the 1970s,
I would borrow clothes from friends,
make things and shop in thrift stores.
Now I shop all over the place. I love
designers but I love all sorts of clothes.
I keep an open mind.
Blonde combines innocence
with sensuality. Because my look was
the group’s identity – it sort of became
commercial for me too.
Girls with a strong look inspire
me like Tina Weymouth from
Talking Heads and Patti Smith.
Like me, they were involved with all male
bands – there weren’t so many all girl
bands at the time. Although thinking back
the British girls The Slits had a lot of fun
with clothes – they were extreme.
The first time I felt cool was
probably about the 5th grade. I
was always dressing up, even as a little girl.
Beyonce and Lady Gaga aren’t
afraid to push things to the limits
Rock Debbie
Harry’s look in
torn denim and
a sexy tee.
– they obviously get a kick out of
it. They are both super-big stars with a
real sense of who they are.
I wear things that make me look
good and feel comfortable. My
signature look was a black mini dress with
black boots and a beret. Recently I bought
a black leather skirt I love. It’s timeless and
cool and you can wear it with anything.
I’ve always enjoyed clothes. I like to
put something on that’s fabulous and then
not have to think about it.

usic has
always played
an important
role in my life, from a very
early age, affecting the way
I think and the way I express myself. The
first gig I ever went to was Bob Dylan
supported by Tom Petty, but my passion
is for British musicians: the Rolling Stones,
the Beautiful South, the Sex Pistols, The
Kooks. Fashion and music have always
been connected. Whatever you’re trying
to create, there’s a sound or a lyric that
just communicates it perfectly. I am
lucky to be in an environment where I
discover new musicians. When I meet a
young musician, it has nothing to do with
campaigns. It’s more like, ‘let’s work on
something together – who knows what
it’s going to be’. Then things develop
organically. It’s great to have a reputation
for finding and promoting British talent.
A bit Rolling Stones, a little Nick Cave
and a touch The Smiths, London fourpiece Life In Film came to Bailey’s
attention after posting a track online.
