Summer Edition June 06, 2016 Principal's Message Dear CLIP Community, It is hard to believe the school year is almost over. As I reflect back on the 2015 – 2016 school year, I have many wonderful memories. Although I consider this year to be a monumental success, it is my sincere belief that the best is yet to come. I have many reasons for this optimistic outlook. First, we had an unprecedented fundraising season in which we had a 100% participation rate. This bodes well for our ability to continue to support the progression of CLIP. Second, we had a successful year of collaborative voice among CLIPCo and the Meyerholz/Miller CLIP Advisory Committee (CAC). In building on the success of this voice, we will be seeking to strengthen MCAC to include at least one representative from each grade level to help steer the academic direction of CLIP. Lastly, we took a large step in shifting our instructional approach to teaching Mandarin writing to a more targeted and personal learning experience for every child with the support of Units of Study, “Writers Workshop.” Next year, we look to apply this approach to teaching Mandarin reading in some grades. As you can see, the success we have had this year is only the beginning of the process in the advancement of CLIP. Words cannot express how thankful I am for your contribution in supporting the CLIP student experience. Your dedication, passion, and drive to support bi-literate and bi-cultural children is the best gift anyone could ever ask for. I am truly blessed to be able to serve your children on a daily basis and am looking forward with excitement to the 2016 – 2017 school year. I 庫比蒂諾中文沉浸教學 Cupertino Language Immersion Program Community Organization 20151016 Newsletter, Summer Issue wish you all a safe, restful, and joyous summer. Life is a gift, make the best of every moment! Joyfully, Mr. Coleman ASEP Showcase The ASEP Spring Showcase was held on June 3, 2016 at Meyerholz Elementary School. Over 120 students participated in ASEP this year, and the Spring Showcase was a wonderful time to see all they have learned in one year. Performances included Wushu, Lion Dance, Erhu, Chinese Flute, Percussion, and Chinese Dance. Our Digital Animation students also debuted their short films. We want to thank our many parent volunteers and our class coordinators who do so much for the ASEP program. We also want to acknowledge our out-going co-directors, Cathy Lu and Sylvia Leong for their service to the program. We are pleased to introduce Nikki Tan and Rachel Turkal, next year's ASEP co-directors. Please join us in thanking them for taking on this great responsibility! Graduation Celebration CLIPCO celebrated its 17th graduating class on Friday, May 27, 2016. Over 500 people attended this year's Graduation Celebration, held at Miller Middle School. Our 5th grade graduates performed three songs and a ribbon dance. Our 8th grade graduates sang a song, showed off their swing dance skills, and video-making abilities. Speeches were given in 庫比蒂諾中文沉浸教學 Cupertino Language Immersion Program Community Organization 20151016 Newsletter, Summer Issue English and Chinese by representatives from both grades. The performances were followed by a diploma ceremony for both grades, and slideshow retrospectives celebrating special moments in the students' time at CLIP. The evening was capped by a light reception, held in the Miller Quad, where a Lion Dance team made up of CLIP alumni performed, and a rock band made up of 7th grade CLIP students provided music. Graduates enjoyed a wonderful time to mill with family, friends, and teachers. Many thanks to the over 70 volunteers from the CLIP community who came together to execute this new event. The new tradition is off to a great start and we look forward to seeing it grow and evolve in coming years! The theme is 'when we're together' 當我們同在一起。A keepsake for their time spent together of 1st year at CLIP. Some kids started the school year not able to write their Chinese names so it is wonderful to see the finished art work! (Contributed by Kathleen Ko.) These beautiful scarves were created in the last 8th grade CLIP Art lesson, where the students learned about a an international art movement in the early 20th century known as Art Nouveau - "New Art". With the advent of industrialization and the invention of 庫比蒂諾中文沉浸教學 Cupertino Language Immersion Program Community Organization 20151016 Newsletter, Summer Issue photography, art did not need to be realistic anymore. Many artists went for bold, sweeping designs, and they were seen on everything, including fabric, architecture and graphic artwork, etc. Organic shapes and decorative patterns were especially favored. Students were encouraged to create something they like on these silk scarves by using bold, sweeping brushstrokes and colors. We used the French serti technique, which involved enclosing an area on the silk using a resist (gutta/outliner) before filling in with brilliant silk dyes. The Bridge Cup Contest is organized jointly by the Confucius Institute of San Francisco State University and the San Francisco Unified School District, and it is sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters of the Education Office of the Chinese Consulate General of San Francisco. The purpose of the contest is to provide more opportunities for students to demonstrate their linguistic and cultural talents, and showcase their interest and achievements in learning Chinese language and culture with help from their teachers and parents. It is $332 434, up from $220 340 last year. There are 3 main reasons for this jump in spending. The largest increase is to pay for more Instructional Aide time in the classrooms. We will have 19.5 hours of IA time per day distributed between grades K-6, up from 12 hours per day last year. This will provide our teachers with more resources to meet the needs of the kids. The additional cost of this is $57 000. The second major change next year will be to introduce a new leveled-Chinese reading curriculum in Grades 2-3. The students will read from a new set of books, specially chosen at 22 different levels of difficulty. Each child will read at his or her own level, stepping up when ready. A major component of the new curriculum is online assessment. Students will take their tests online, and teachers will be able to use the data from these assessments to see which points each student has grasped and which still need work. The addition cost here is $22 860. The final budget increase is actually not an increase and all but simply a change in accounting practices. CLIPCO Administration Costs have never been included in the budget 庫比蒂諾中文沉浸教學 Cupertino Language Immersion Program Community Organization 20151016 Newsletter, Summer Issue before; now we will be able to track those. CLIPCO spent $13 055 in administrative costs lasts year. The Budget will be posted on the CLIPCO website at the end of our fiscal year, July 31. FUHSD Citizen's Advisory Committee The Fremont Union High School District has formed a Citizen’s Advisory Committee (CAC) to look at the issue of declining enrollment at Lynbrook High School. The Board will make a decision on how to resolve the problem based largely on the recommendations of this CAC. Whether the temporary policy to allow all Miller grads to attend LHS is made permanent will depend a lot on this group’s report. Two CLIP parents are members of the CAC: Terri Shieh-Newton and Mo Fong. They have committed a lot of time and effort to this CAC, and CLIP is lucky to have them representing us. Mo and Terri have asked the CLIP community for thoughts and recommendations on the subject, so that they can present a solid CLIP position to the CAC. The first CAC meeting was May 17 and they will run twice a month through October. More information about the CAC can be found at: http://fuhsd.ca.schoolloop.com/CitizensAdvisoryCommittee 庫比蒂諾中文沉浸教學 Cupertino Language Immersion Program Community Organization 20151016 Newsletter, Summer Issue Brooke Berrios Speaks in Front of FUHSD Board CLIP 5th Grader, Brooke Berrios spoke in from the Fremont Union High School District Board on May 17th. She asked the board to consider making permanent their one-year policy to allow all Miller grads to matriculate into Lynbrook High School. Brooke did a great job and represented CLIP well to the outside world. She was articulate and confident and respectful. A copy of her speech follows: "Good evening, my name is Brooke Berrios. I would like to thank you for allowing me to speak tonight. I am very grateful to be in this amazing Cupertino school district. For the last 6 years, I have been attending Meyerholz Elementary where I have met many wonderful friends. Now I am excited to move on to Miller for another 3 years with my friends and classmates. We will be together for 9 years by the time we get to high school. I am happy to know that this year you are allowing Miller students to attend Lynbrook High School, and I hoping that you can make it permanent. 庫比蒂諾中文沉浸教學 Cupertino Language Immersion Program Community Organization 20151016 Newsletter, Summer Issue Without this policy, we would be split up into different high schools, and we wouldn't be able to be together and support each other. If my friends are at different schools, and not be able to support each other, it would be harder for us to transition to high school. Again, thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to speak tonight.” If any other CLIP students would like to express their opinions on the subject before the Board, please contact Jon Campbell at [email protected]. The FUHSD Board is eager to include student voices, and is warm and receptive. CLIPCO Board Positions Still Open We have reached the end of the school year and there are still openings on the CLIPCO Board. Most importantly, we are looking for a Vice-President. The main role of the VP is to run the annual Direct Give Campaign. This is a hugely important role because it’s so important that we continue to have successful fundraising drives. It’s not necessary to have prior experience here. The structure of the DGC has been well-established from years past, and there will be lots of parents to help out and answer questions. The leadership that the DGC Chair provides though, is invaluable to guiding the Campaign and making sure it runs smoothly. Our participation numbers have improved every year for the past 5 or 6 years and we want to keep that momentum going. There are also 3 positions for grade reps that are not filled. The following parents have completed their two-year terms but we haven’t yet been able to find them replacements: ●

Chinese New Year Parade Chair Still Open We still need a replacement for Eileen Voon as Chair of the Chinese New Year Parade. If you think you might be the right person for the job, please contact Jon Campbell at [email protected]. 庫比蒂諾中文沉浸教學 Cupertino Language Immersion Program Community Organization 20151016 Newsletter, Summer Issue
